Kenny, "The owner" response to Maggie G's review is false. She went in and saw a bike for sale that she was potentially interested in purchasing and sat on it only to get talked down to and yelled at. Nothing was broken, no bike was rolled away with, Kenny just needs to take a class or read a book or two on customer service. Shortly before she came in I was in the store looking to rent a bike. I came in with the intention of renting at 2:30 on a Tuesday and returning 10:00 am on Thursday around 44 hours. So I asked if he could give me a potential discount and he basically laughed in my face and said no, we only do calendar day rentals. So $72 a day, which is ridiculous because the other local bike store rentals for $45 a day for a similar bike. For 3 days, there is a 3 day discount of $24 off equalling $192, still ridiculous for 44 hours. They did have ten or so identical bikes outside so Kenny must be a trust fund baby or something just leaving business out there. Neither of us got a welcoming experience or any type of feeling of hospitality or simply want to have us in the store. I recommend Lopez kayaks and bicycle works just down the road, completely different experience. The only reason we didn't is they weren't open for the season yet. Great service at what I thought was a reasonable price (easily would have paid this on mainland)!They had initially thought I needed a new shifter but it turned out to be a wire issue. A less scrupulous place might have just replaced it. I also appreciate that they give you options, like this might be an issue for you in the future, but I think you are okay on it for a while. We were staying on Orcas Island for four days and decided to rent bikes on Lopez Island for a one day adventure. Reached out to Kenny at Village Cycles and he managed everything with one phone call. We were able to reserve the bicycles from Orcas Island with our credit card and for a small extra fee he had them waiting for us near the ferry terminal when we arrived on Lopez Island. Luckily we thought to ask him for paniers on each of our bikes which was great to have to take our rain gear (which luckily we did not need) and a few other essentials with us. We heard that Lopez Island was a relatively flat island and compared to San Juan Island and Orcas Island it is relatively flat. But please be advised there are lots of rolling hills and it's nowhere near flat. We were both very grateful that we rented e-bikes and we managed to do 45 miles on our adventure on Lopez Island. There's not much of a shoulder while riding your bicycle but the roads are good and there's very little vehicular traffic so we felt safe at all times. Also good to note is that there's not much else outside of Lopez Village as far as getting lunch or snacks other than the Southend Market (located obviously near the southern part of the island). This is where we encountered a very wonderful employee (named Tricia) who actually had her son Cameron ride over to the market from their home with his bicycle pump to air up one of our tires as we were low on air and there's no place around to get air! Now that's friendly island vibes for you! After our ride we stopped in at the Lopez Islander Resort's Tiki Lounge just outside of Lopez Village and had some refreshing drinks and appetizers before catching the ferry back to Orcas Island. This was a great stop and I would also highly recommend this business. We had an incredible day on Lopez Island and would certainly recommend Kenny and Village Cycles for future rentals! read more

We rented e-bikes from Village Cycles on Aug 1. Our Ferry was cancelled and the next one was an hour late. By the time we got to the Island we were left with only a few hours to ride. Village Cycles is not at all customer oriented when it comes to this as they will only do business between 10am and 4:30pm. No late pick up. Because of this, I would not recommend them for a day trip to the island. However, if you are staying on the island, this would probably be a good, affordable option. read more

We called a day ahead to confirm e-bike rentals. We were told it was best to do it online. So, we logged on after hanging up and reserved two bikes. The following day we left our boat at the marina, paid the $10 and walked about a mile to town. When we arrived in the shop, we were told there was no e-bikes to rent for the day. The two gentlemen turned and continued to work on bikes. We explained we called yesterday and reserved online. They said our reservation was probably canceled and they think they sent an email. No email. They said it probably went to spam. Nope. They again turned rudely, ignoring us. On a quick vacation to the San Juan's, this wasted a whole day. read more

Called ahead of our arrival to ensure we could drop our tandem for a much needed tune up. Owner was super friendly and remember me when we arrived. Dropped the bike on appointed day and he called to let us know all was ready just a short time afterwards. Shifting was much better and drag brake cable was set up properly. Suggested a wonderful route that allowed us time on a beach to explore in addition to the biking. Spent time we us after returning the bikes to suggest places to visit on Lopez Island. I'd definitely recommend Village Cycles for rentals. They offered mountain bikes for my niece and I on a recent three-day trip to the San Juan Islands. The bikes fit our needs, were sized to fit our heights and included helmets (which we didn't need since we brought our own), front and rear lights, back racks, bungee cords (very helpful since we had gear for bike camping), replacement tubes and a pump. The whole rental process was extremely convenient, arranged online and included drop off and pick up at the ferry terminal. The staff was very accommodating and answered all my questions in a fast and friendly manner. The rental price was very competitive and much cheaper than bikes I rented last year in Anacortes. If I could improve one thing, I'd wish the bikes were a little better quality. The derailers were a bit clunky. Not a big deal as we were able to bike all over Lopez and San Juan Island, but I wish gear change would have been smoother. Regardless, I was very pleased and would definitely look to village cycles for the future! read more

We had a great ride today with Village Cycles. There were 4 of us and we did a 4 hour tour with their electric assist bikes. Those bikes are awesome! I've never been on one before. My bike had 5 power settings. When on, when you pedal the electric assist kicks in. When you are coasting or breaking the electric assist is disabled. With these bikes the hills were a breeze and we could really enjoy the countryside without a strenuous (too hard) ride. I want one. The staff at the shop were friendly and helpful. Nice people. Our tour guide wasn't great at keeping the group together. We got separated and had to find our own way back, which was pretty easy. In 4 hours we saw a lot of the island, with hiking stops at the bay, at Shark Reef, and at the south end, and a visit to a goat cheese farm - great cheese. Nice touch. Three of our 4 bikes did not have a water bottle holder, so be prepared for that. - David read more

Long story short. I was up a creek without a paddle and Village Cycles on Lopez went way above and beyond to help save my island bike adventure. Thank you Heidi and Michael! Easily 6 out of 5 stars Full Story.. I took a bicycle trip out to the San Juan Islands and ended up camping on Lopez Isl. with my girlfriend. About two days in both tubes on my gf's bike went flat. No problem I thought, ill just replace the tubes with spares that I brought. After flipping the bike I noticed the issue. Both tires had worn completely through to the tube in spots. Crap. I did a quick search for bike shops on the island who might be open on the weekend. Only one. Village cycles. They would be closing in 30min...I ride like the wind and get there just in time...run up to the door. Locked. !@#$ A note on the door says owners are away. Hart sinking, feeling dejected..I figure, small town ill give em a call and just maybe.. I call the number on the door and the message says the family are away on vacation. Shoot. Hang up without leaving a message. My phone is about to die so I start biking back to camp. About 10 min later I get a text from the owner Heidi! She noticed I called and asked if I was trying to reach the shop. I explained my situation and she hung in there with me through spotty phone service and my phone dying, brainstorming ways to get me a tire. Eventually she recalled they had a few tires stacked in back for recycling and I could check for the right size. Fingers crossed I started looking through the pile... Success!
