I came late in the day, and I was greeted by Wendy. She was super nice and helpful, and she helped me to pick out a good selection for my new-to-Houston fiancé to try. I cannot emphasize enough how sweet and nice Wendy was. She also makes REALLY cute chibi art, which makes it worth checking out this specific slot in general. This used to be our favorite donut shop. No more..we went different times of day and just a week apart; both times the donuts looked like a very inexperienced person made them. Icing was sloppy. Tasted like they were old donuts maybe fried in old oil. Their prices went up like just about anywhere, but the donuts got worse. The ladies that work there look miserable. The place didn't look clean. I should've walked out after seeing a bug in the glass case, but since it was our favorite spots, I wanted to give it a couple of chances. We will not be going back. Honestly just incredibly disappointed, we went 20 minutes before closing time and the donuts were old and quite literally stale. The service was disappointing as well, the lady made a face when I came in and the second I left at 7:42 she closed the store even though there was lady right outside, who wanted some donuts more than 15 minutes before closing time. used to be one of my favorite donut places but after that experience I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

I honestly don't understand how this location has such high reviews. Every time we have gotten donuts here, they were meh. This time, this donut tasted like it was cooked in grease that some kind of meat was cooked in. And this was literally the ONLY filling in the donut. I put it back in the box so you could see how much was left compared to a whole one. I kept tearing looking for the filling to see what kind it was and I finally got down to this part to find a tiny bit of apple. We love Shipley's. We moved here from MS and they were always amazing. SHIPLEY'S IN-CROWD This Shipley's location is actually not too packed in the mornings (around 7:15am) and major plus is that their donuts are always HOT HOT HOT :D I mean, maybe at a weird time like 2pm they aren't, but this (to me) is an awesome perk in the mornings. Saturday FYI - it's crowded but you kind of feel popular for being there. I noticed that in a single donut line, there stood a fancy business exec, high school's most popular, a handsome tan guy who looked lake-bound, and other socially active looking people. It is a Shipley's. The donuts are sweet, whether they are glazed or baked or cake or stuffed or a bearclaw. They are not amazing donuts that you will want to trade your children for, but they will make your children squeal with joy when you come home with a bag. The coffee isn't great (sometimes a little watery, sometimes a little burned), but it also is not terrible. Both you and your spouse will appreciate it, especially if your children are squealing. The donuts and coffee pair well. On weekdays, staff are attentive and speedy and will be patient with folks who are entirely too picky with what they want to put into their dozen donuts for the office meeting later that morning. They seem to be more relaxed on weekends, but hey: so am I. La verdad es que (as others have noted) es mas facil para hablar con los empleados en Español que en Ingles. It's a donut shop. Nothing else. There is no fancy lounge or gourmet coffee with whip cream. The fluorescent lighting dares you to stay for more than 5 minutes. But if your looking for one of the best glazed donuts west of the Mississippi, do yourself a favor and stop by and pick up 12. You will be disappointed in yourself if you only get two or three because later in the day the craving will hit you as your brain remembers that warm, flakey glaze from earlier in the day. I would have given this place 5 stars if it weren't for the damn fluorescent lighting. I find it unnecessarily bright, especially considering people usually stop by early in the morning. Being new to the area... I kept hearing "You haven't tried Shipley's yet?!" So Saturday morning, when I finally crawled from tmy slumber and woke up the roommates, I had them take me! So we got there around noon. Ordered a random dozen (about $8) and got in the car. OMG. Warm, gooey, fresh, amzing, mouth waters, just GO. Don't walk, don't think...GO! Chicago doesn't have anything this good. The only down fall I have was the creamed filled are a little sweet. But I will still buy them lol just have to cut them in half or share! The cherry glazed was my favorite! I only gave four starts because I need to try some coffee and other items to give a full 5. I feel that makes it fair lol read more

I was told that one of Texas's greatest products is donuts. So I was VERY excited on a recent trip to Houston to pop into Shipley's for some out-of-this world Lone Star donuts. I was less than impressed. It was the afternoon so maybe a warm, freshly-made batch is eyes roll in the back of my head good. But room temperature they're nothing special, much like Krispy Kreme. Since I discovered Rainbow Donuts in Phoenix, the donut bar has been set very high and Shipley fell short. read more

As others have noted, there is nothing cool or trendy about this place. Words like basic and old school come to mind. But the doughnuts are very good. Much better than most doughnut shops. Plus they're open later in the day than most places, which is a plus for me. Because I'm not typically up at the crack of dawn and when I do get up, I'm not in the mood for something to eat until I've been awake for a couple of hours.
