Dr Chan delivered my first son in 2009 and will be delivering my second son in July of this year. I will never see another OB! I had to change insurance companies since my last pregnancy and I made sure she took my new potential insurance before applying for it. She is incredibly respectful of your wishes (natural or not) and isn't "quick to cut" unless it's an emergency or medically required. Her bedside & office visit manners are great, not to mention she's absolutely adorable! Her nurses and office staff are all very sweet and helpful. I was referred to Dr Chan from a friend and I was SO happy to hear good reviews of her over yelp and my friend. She took me in when I was 7 months pregnant (or more) bc we switched health care providers, and when I was calling around some places and they wouldn't accept me bc i was more than 6 mths preggos. Anyways, I stepped into her office and she was so kind and sweet! Although one of her nurses (or med assistant) wasn't very sociable, but still respectable. I was induced bc I was so big and it looked like I was gonna go over my due date. She gave me the choice and the consequences of either and i choose to. They called her once I was ready and my water broke (a whole day after!). They called Dr. Chan up but she came on time and was ready to rock and roll. There's an on going joke that she delivers big babies bc she is so small (my darling baby girl was 9.8Ibs!) but she did a great job and I was satisfied with everything. Dr Chan has helped us to deliver two baby girls. Through both pregnancies she always answered all my questions and addressed every concern I had. Her staff is wonderful as well, especially Patty! My first daughter had to be born by emergency c-section after a long time in labor, my high blood pressure, and the fact that she had merconium (among other things). Dr Chan did such a wonderful job, my incision looks great, and I always felt that I was in excellent hands. If we ever have another she will be my only choice. One word of warning, if you want to see her for an annual well woman visit realize that you will have to schedule a few months in advance, and pregnant woman come first. Dr Shirley Chan is 5 stars OB GYN, there is no question about that. That 1 star is for the way whoever needs to answer the phone. All day today, I tried calling the office to clarify my appointment time but everytime when my phone automatic redial, it's the same busy signal. It finally rang at 1130am which was connected to the answering message that may direct you to answering service because they are out to lunch. I swear, the phone was just left off the hook all morning. I patiently keep calling and same busy signal all the time. They should do a better job about that answering a phone call duty. I am so sure Dr Chan is not aware of what the front office or back office people do to the phone. This was not the first time it happened. This rating is for them to improve in that area. My husband and I had to switch health care plans half way through our pregnancy (yikes!), and Dr. Chan was thankfully willing to accept us as patients. We had an easy pregnancy, so we didn't have to discuss too many interventions, and I can't speak to what would have happened if we had - but we wanted a natural childbirth and she was supportive. Unfortunately for us, she was out of town when our son chose to be born, so we didn't get to deliver with her, but we appreciated her prenatal care very much. She spent plenty of time with us during each visit and answered all of our questions - and we had plenty. The wait time CAN be pretty long...I've waited for over an hour on one occasion. The office staff is friendly and competent and prompt to return phone calls and call with test results. I'd recommend Dr. Chan to my friends for sure. read more

This is a long overdue review! Dr. Chan delivered both my daughters, both with extreme complications and so for those looking for a High-Risk doctor, I urge you to consider Dr. Chan and to read my story. It is not often, especially in a large city that one can find a Doctor who cares so deeply, is so communicative and so dedicated to continuing care. Dr. Chan has always been a great OB/GYN, she was on my first pregnancy which had a scary and complicated labor. When I had complications with my second pregnancy she called me from her vacation to talk through what could be happening and ultimately when I lost that pregnancy she couldn't have been more kind, sympathetic and supportive. But it was for her care with my third pregnancy (second daughter), that I will have a lifelong sense of overwhelming gratitude for Dr. Chan. My pregnancy started off normal, but in my 20 week exam it was discovered that my cervix was shortening and I was going in to pre-term labor. The perinatologist said some awful things, gave me an ultimatum of immediately getting a cerclage and was an all around jerk. I had to go back for weekly checks, consulting with Dr. Chan the whole time. She also called in her colleague Dr. Wu (the 80 something legend) to work together to help me make a decision. Ultimately we decided to do the cerclage which Wu did the operation since he is truly the best at it and even though Dr. Chan didn't need to be there, and wasn't being paid to be there. She was with me the whole time in the operating room, holding my hand, staying with me in my hospital room after and following up for several days. She found me a new, less rude perinatologist that I loved and things were looking stable. Several weeks later, in the middle of the night, my water bag ruptured at 24 weeks, just over the mark of viability. I drove myself to the hospital, they called Dr. Chan and within 15 minutes she was there, in the middle of the night. She comforted me and immediately began measures to speed up lung development, protect the baby from brain bleeds. It was a scary few days but I stabilized and I ended up holding on in there (thanks to my cerclage) for over a month. Long term hospitalization and bed rest is no joke. But, Dr. Chan was there every step of the way. She came in to see me every day. EVERY DAMN DAY. On the weekends in her regular clothes, on the way out with her husband to see the LA Phil, assuring me she has her beeper and she was driving separately. Sometimes we'd just sit and talk about our daughters, or food or nothing at all, but her humor (she's extremely funny), her kindness and her dedication honestly, made it bearable. Perhaps the most remarkable example of her skill was towards the end of my stay. Some things had changed, I had a little bleeding and some contractions and she made the call to do the second round of steroids to help the baby. This was a tough call, because you need 48 hours for these things to take hold and benefit the baby but she had an instinct about it and pulled the trigger. Sure enough, just under two days later, things were really changing, I could tell my baby was barely moving. All of a sudden, she came busting in and told me she had been watching the fetal monitor all day and saw the head of USC neonatology in the building, she basically accosted him and demanded he come in to give an expert opinion. And sure enough, the baby needed to come out. Because of Dr. Chan's interventions, my 2 pounder came out breathing on her own, with no brain bleeds and no major complications. We had a long NICU stay with which Dr. Chan continued to visit and track with me and I completely credit her with saving our daughter Georgia's life. I could tell you a million other stories about the ways in which she has been a beacon in my life and throughout my pregnancies. I could write a book on how amazing and funny and smart she is. But above all else, and what sets her apart from others, is the way that she executed an extremely high risk pregnancy and surgery to deliver a healthy, albeit premature baby. read more

Dr chan is the best obgyn anyone can go too. Yes getting a first appointment takes a while since it seems she has a lot of patients but once you're not a first time patient it's easier to get an appointment (non pregnant appointment). And if you have any personal questions that are embarrassing to ask she answers them and sets your mind at ease. I've seen other doctors and she is by far the best of the best. I absolutely love Dr.Chan and trust her professional opinion. I delivered my firstborn with Dr.Chan and currently expecting my 2nd one. My experience with my 1st pregnancy was as easy and assuring as it gets. Dr. Chan is really easy to connect to, due to her manner and caring attitude. She explains every detail and makes sure you understand it. I've never felt rushed during my appointments and Dr.Chan always takes her time patiently to answer every question I have. You feel like you are her only priority when you are with her and she makes you feel confident and comfortable in every step of decision making. I have had two babies with doctor Chan. After having kids i have tried making appointments to see her and she has referred me out always. If you're not pregnant, she wont see you. If she agrees on seeing you. It will probably be in six months. Her front desk staff is rude and has no compassion. I have referred so many people there. Dr. Chan delivered my baby last summer, and I can't believe I forgot to write a review until now! Dr. Chan (and her staff of wonderful nurses) consistently made me feel well cared for. As a high risk patient, I had many questions, concerns and special care needs to insure a safe, healthy pregnancy and delivery. Dr. Chan communicated with other care providers and was readily available throughout my labor. Even with a complicated delivery, Dr. Chan was able to help me feel safe and confident. I chose Dr. Chan to be my OB because of her positive yelp reviews. I had a new insurance and wanted to find someone friendly towards natural birth. Well, I really regret going with Dr. Chan. She is NOT a good match for those who want as few interventions as possible. I want to repeat that. She really is NOT a good match for those who want as natural a birth as possible. I feel like I should have known better and I should have switched OBs, even if at the last minute. It is up to the patient to choose an OB they are comfortable with and share beliefs with. That being said, she still only gets 2 stars. Positives: Dr. Chan is upbeat and cheerful. She is like a little energizer bunny. She greets each patient in a very friendly manner. Negatives: - She does not take her time with the patients (probably because she is so busy). - In order to get questions answered, you have to be a bit assertive. She answers in a quick, curt and textbook answer. She has never asked if I have any questions for her. - She really stresses weight issues. ex: I am a slim, healthy, athletic woman and Dr. Chan made a huge deal about my weight gain during pregnancy. I figured as long as I was eating healthy, if I gained weight my body needed it and it would be fine. I got quite a lecture from Dr. Chan several times during the pregnancy despite me telling her I was comfortable with my size. She says they recommend gaining 25lb (it's actually 25-35lb and dependent on how big you were before hand). I gained 43lb. At the 6 week checkup, I had lost 27 pounds. I felt fine with where I was and I know that I will continue to lose weight in a healthy and gradual way. I assume I will be back to pre-pregnancy weight in a couple months. Dr. Chan saw that I lost 27lb and said, "See, I told you you shouldn't have gained so much weight." - she is intervention heavy. ex: at my 38 week appt., She told me that my amniotic fluid was low and it needed to be monitored. It was at a 9 and she said if it was at an 8 when I came back in 3 days, we had "to get the baby out." I had just seen my specialist a few days earlier and so called and asked if my fluid was low then. He told me that anything above 5 was fine, that it is often lower in the Summer. My fluid went up a great amount just with me drinking water, but if it had gone down just a tiny bit, I would have been induced when I didn't HAVE to be. - she referred to my pregnancy as high risk repeatedly, when it barely was. In my prenatal tests my Inhibin A was up one number above normal. This qualified me to see a specialist (whom I loved). Every single visit except my 38 week one went great with low blood pressure, baby measuring perfectly, etc. Even the specialist said a few years ago, my score would have been within normal, yet Dr. Chan repeatedly said I had a "high risk" pregnancy and that could get in the way of having less interventions. Not Supporting Natural: Dr. Chan told me she only had two requirements for birth...1) continuous fetal monitoring 2) a heplock. I already needed continuous monitoring because I was gbs +, so I thought this wasn't a problem at all. Well, I had a wonderful birthing experience at Glendale Adventist. My husband and I were relaxed and in love and worked as a team to get my baby girl out in a calm environment. Luckily, nothing went wrong (I was not against interventions if they did, AT ALL). Dr. Chan came in when baby girl was already in sight and the nurses were telling me to wait for the doctor, maybe 3-5 minutes before she came out. Up till then we had a calm, happy birth. Dr. Chan had told me we could push in different positions, but I doubt she EVER does this unless there is someone there arguing with her. I asked her and my nurse asked her and she just started talking quickly about the reasons why she liked stirrups. Ok - I wasn't going to argue. I change my position get in the stirrups (against gravity) and Dr. Chan yells out when to push. She actually yelled, like it was a high pressure situation. There was no high pressure, everything was happening exactly how it should have up to that point and without her help the little girl was almost out. I had told her I also wanted to push when I needed to, but no, Dr. Chan wanted me to push when she wanted me to, she counted down in a loud voice from ten and then yelled push. A kind nurse whispered in my ear to push when I felt the urge (which I was planning to do anyways). I did push my last two pushes when I didn't feel the urge against my best judgement. I had a small tear and I believe that is when it happened. After the baby girl was delivered, Dr. Chan wasn't happy with the the amount of bleeding, so I told her we could use pitocin to deliver the placenta. She then started lecturing me saying something like, "I told you you should have used.........." I honestly didn't want to listen, I wanted to bond with my gir read more

Went to see her because I had one large fibroid that needed to be taken out. After waiting for over an hour in a tiny uncomfortable room, had a quick exam, after which she sent me for unnecessary blood tests. Dr Chan said she does perform fibroid removal surgeries but that she does them only through C-section!!!! Whaaaat!!! I mean, my fibroid was right at the v opening, she touched it - that's so close it was... why not remove it vaginally, but subject me to a huge unnecessary (again) surgery.. why?? naturally i went and found a normal gynecologist who gives a damn and took out the fibroid vaginally within a week of our first appt. this is my ratiing for dr shirley chan. i would not suggest you going to her with fibroid problems. period. read more

Honestly the best experience from start to finish. Dr. Chan is amazing and came recommended from more than 10 clients at the dental office in La Canada where my wife works. So grateful and truly blessed we were able to have Dr. Chan deliver our baby. Her staff is amazing. Patty feels like family. They made my wife comfortable. She is soothing and a great person to have while you're in labor, she's a great coach. Loved the no surprise dr in the L&D ward. Would love to go back to her if I could move back to Glendale. Don't give it a second thought, if you can get in to see her do it! It's rare she takes in new patients but if you have the chance do it! Also cancellations may be something you want to avoid.. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Chan. had two beautiful twin girls delivered via cesarean. her staff is so sweet and exceptionally professional. I had great care, and she took every precaution necessary to assure we where as well informed about the state of my girls since day one. it got to the point where I was seeing a perinatalogist and Dr. chan twice a month, but I delivered what is considered full term for twins, no complications, no nicu, I was out of the hospital in two and a half days. when she counsels you, she is non judgmental and down to earth, no doctor jargon and make eye contact. you are wise to choose her to Deliver your loved one. she is high in demand so getting an appointment is the hard part... because she's that good. read more
