I feel evil doing this, but here it goes... My wedding planner recommended Shirley and didn't tell me about Pastry Pride. When I got to the tasting with my friend (fiance being unavailable), Shirley told me about it. She uses it for her filling and frosting, and swears by it. She said it was non-dairy, but when I asked to see the package, it had dairy. But the first ingredient is hydrogenated soybean oil. And you can tell. The cake part of each was moist and flavorful and delicious. I truly loved some of the cake parts, and considered just going for it...but I cannot stand the Pastry Pride. It tastes soooooooo wrong. It tastes artificial and plasticky and vile and I could not, I decided, stand it. I felt terrible and it was early on in the tasting that I felt a sinking feeling and didn't know how to extricate myself from the situation. She was very understanding and said that the cake needs to be a good fit and that if it wasn't, she understood and hoped I would find one I was happy with. She really loves her Pastry Pride and when she talked about the benefits (the cake would have held up beautifully even during our August outdoor wedding) I wanted to like it. She also had asked about details of the wedding I didn't know yet (the exact timing) and explained in great detail why it was important I knew and how hard it was to plan around, etc. Anyway...it was a little awkward after we said we weren't interested. Also, we had a dinner reservation and so we made moves to leave. We didn't get out till over an hour later somehow (during which time the awkwardness grew). She was very talkative and even when we said we had somewhere to be and should get going, she would start new stories and we just felt terrible trying to leave so we stayed. She packed up the cake for us and was extremely sweet, but we were a bit dismayed that we couldn't leave for over an hour after we told her we wouldn't be getting a cake. Shirley is very sweet and friendly and welcomes you into her home and hugs you goodbye, but it was very awkward and definitely not for me. Also, her home is a little hard to find in a trailer park that doesn't have very practical numbering. I had to call her for help. read more

Wedding date: 10-7-17 Miss Shirley's cake was amazing! She is so friendly and easy to work with. She listens to your needs but uses her years of experience to give you the best advice! We loved meeting her for the cake tasting and enjoyed getting to know her and hear so many wonderful stories. The day of the wedding she arrived on time and set up the cake just how we talked about. The cakes were beautiful! We had 200 people and the wedding was on a hot day, so she suggested we do three small cakes to display and have sheet cakes in the back to serve. Everyone loved the different flavors, we had chocolate-chocolate chip, raspberry (my fav) and strawberry shortcake. Not only were the cakes beautiful but they tasted fantastic too! I had Shirley wrap up our anniversary cake separate and I picked it up a few days after the wedding. I stuck it in the freezer for our one year anniversary. When we pulled it out to have the traditional piece of cake, I swear it tasted just as good as our wedding day! I wish I had more!!! During the process to select our wedding reception venue and service providers, initially we went with the typical shops in the area. After visiting a few and having great difficulty even arranging visits with others, I came across Shirley's name on a preferred vendor list at one of the venues. She was VERY quick to respond to our tasting request and we were surprised to be welcomed into her lovely home for a truly personalized experience. The love and care she instills into each and every masterpiece she bakes is just one of the reasons selecting her as our baker was an easy choice. Rather than four of five choices, we were given a huge list that made narrowing the choice to only five for the tasting difficult and picking what we wanted even trickier. Each one is carefully crafted with high quality ingredients, down to using lemons for her own tree for the AMAZING lemon poppy seed cake. The venue we chose was fairly new and had never heard of Shirley, but after running OUT of cake when people came back for seconds I'm sure she's been added to yet another preferred vendor list. Thank you, Shirley, for making us part of your fan club and I cannot wait to see you on Saturday to pick up the two cakes I ordered today for celebrations this weekend. My son and wife just ate the top cake for their 1st anniversary. Just looking at his picture made my mouth water remembering how good his cake was. It was hands down the best cake I've ever eaten and Im a good baker! I've asked my kids to have my 60th birthday cake made by her this January. Loved her personality... Such a sweet woman! Now, down to business. Her cakes are delicious, especially the marble cake. Hands down. The reason I gave her only 2 stars which really breaks my heart but I have to be honest are the two following reasons: she told me that I would have to pay a deposit for her cake stands and explained that I would get the deposit back when I returned the cake stands after the wedding. Well, I returned them and she NEVER gave me back my deposit. Normally I'd figure that she probably just ripped up the check to void it, however, to my surprise... She had already cashed it weeks earlier! I mean, we literally went out of my way to take the stand to her personal home PRIOR to even going on our honeymoon. I even spoke with her husband via phone at the time I dropped it off. Secondly, my husband and I went to eat our anniversary sheet cake a few weeks ago (on our 1 year anniversary) that we opted for to ensure that there would be plenty of cake for all of our guests at the time of the wedding... Well, the cake was NOT our cake! It was pink frosted with coconut inside and I'm allergic to coconut! We asked for the marble cake! Needless to say, the tradition was completely and utterly ruined and that's more heartbreaking to us than not getting the deposit back. Just be aware of these things, if you choose her to do your wedding cake. I wouldn't want anyone else to have a similar issue. Sweetest lady we met during our whole wedding process (No pun intended). After being recommended to Shirley by several different people, we called her and set up a tasting. We showed up and we were greeted by the warmest hugs and congratulations. Shirley really is so nice and genuine. We tasted maybe 8 different cakes, each one more delicious than the last. We settled on the chocolate with chocolate chips, a French white cake, and another chocolate cake with raspberries for our top tier. The cakes were amazing and the frosting....the frosting was out of this world. The cake was so good, we're seriously considering not freezing the top tier for our anniversary. As I write this, I am eating leftover wedding cake from The Cake Lady. Amazing. I found her from a friend and she made our wedding cake. It was simply amazing. It looked amazing on the table, and it tasted incredible. I got so many comments from guests saying it was the best wedding cake they ever had. Shirley was amazing! When I was planning my wedding I decided that the cake wasn't all that important to me and as long as it was edible, it would be fine with me. I was on a tight budget and decided the cake was something I could save some money on... Well, I made an appointment with Shirley because every single other vendor I met with gave me her as their #1 reference. I thought, well its worth getting some free cake out of it! We show up to our tasting and she had 5 flavors for us to taste (all which I was able to pick myself in email correspondence). It was about 9 in the morning and me, my mother and mother in law ate every last bite of those 5 samples! We just couldn't stop! Needless to say, I booked her that day! One of the coolest things I can say about Shirley and her cakes is this: My husband asked me before I went cake tasting to see if anyone would do a "fun-fettii" cake. It is his favorite and that is what he wanted at our wedding! I was on a mission to find someone to do that for him and surprise him on the day of our wedding! Shirley not only agreed to do it, but made her own home made funfetti recipe that was to die for and my husband was elated when we cut into that cake on our big day! Where do I even begin? My future mother in law loves her cakes and wanted my fiance and I to order the cake for our wedding from her. My fiance called her to make an appointment and she literally left him a ten minute message in response, going on and on about why he shouldn't call her back that night... sorry to inconvenience you by patronizing your business... So we finally get in touch with her and she says she is going out of town immediately prior to our wedding. Fine, we will order our cake from someone else. But no, she says she will do us a FAVOR because future mother in law is a previous client of hers. So we get to the tasting and she says she doesn't know if she will have enough room for us (there were SO many of us... me, my fiance and our mothers. rolling deep.) because there is another couple coming in to taste. ...okay... Sorry to inconvenience you by trying to order a cake and book a tasting... Let me interject here and describe her home. It is a very dark double wide trailer with various taxidermy projects, dream catchers and ceramic figurines everywhere. Just setting the mood for you. So she hugs and kisses the other couple when they come in, and proceeds to give us both a booklet of pictures of her cakes to peruse. After looking through it for a few minutes, she tells me that she will not make any of these cakes for me because my wedding is outside. So I ask her if she has any examples of the kind of cake I can have. She has one example of what she called satellite cakes, which are a bunch of small cakes. I said I was probably not interested in that, did she have any other options? Or even any other pictures of the satellite cakes? Nope. She can't be bothered to take photos of her own cakes. This is probably because she only does white cakes and puts the responsibility of decorating them on the florists. More on that later. She then proceeds to be all sweet with the other couple and tells them how beautiful their cake is going to be. Because they were not inconveniencing her! And not having an outdoor wedding! Heaven forbid! I want to leave at this point, but someone suggests we at least taste the cakes. None of them were even remotely good. I'm not just saying they were not amazing. They were not. good. Again, wanted to leave, but my mom asks her if maybe she could do a sheet cake, which certainly wouldn't fall over. She says no, because she is not willing to carry it. After fawning over the other couple for half an hour or so, somehow she agrees to do a sheet cake if we promise to have someone there to carry it for her. I wanted to leave and think about it (read: get a cake anywhere else) but my future mother in law writes her a check for the deposit without consulting me. I then inform her that the florist had told me the cake needed to be delivered by 12:30 p.m. on the day of the wedding. Shirley puts on this sugary sweet voice, and says, "Oh, just tell her I have another appointment in the morning and that I can't be there until one. I don't really, but just tell her that." O. M. G. I said I would ASK the florist if that was all right, but that I wasn't down to lie to her! Well, I did go home and think about it and decided I would rather have no cake than have an ugly one, and to have to work with this woman. Future mother in law is dead set on this woman and somehow convinces her to do a two-tiered cake. ...why could she not have just agreed to this in the beginning?????????????????????????????? This week, I emailed her. --- Hi Shirley, _____ and I have you scheduled to do our wedding cake _________, 2011. I spoke with ______ at ___________________ Flowers, and she says she will need the cake to be there, ready to decorate by 12:30. The caterers plan to move the cake to a cake stand, so I am wondering if it should be there a bit earlier, so they have time to do so. Please let me know if this is possible, at your convenience. We are working with _________, and I can ask them if there is any way they can keep the cake cool during the ceremony, because I know you were concerned about its stability in the event of warm weather. Also, I just wanted to confirm the shape, frosting, flavor and anniversary cake that were finally decided upon. Thanks, and I hope you had a great weekend! --- HER RESPONSE: --- No, we are coming at 1:00 PM, no sooner. We have other weddings scheduled that day and this is part of the original scheduling process as we indicated in the original contract. We do need sufficient delivery time for all of the weddings. I hope you understand. Shirley --- Allegedly, her husband sent this email...? Long story short, either the caterers or coordinator (or me, for heaven's sake) is/are going to have to decorate the cake, and I'm not even sure what flavor, shape or frosting it has, or what flavor the anniversary cake is.
