Best strawberry ice cream imaginable. Chunks of their fresh grown strawberries and lots of cream in this stuff. It's heavy duty.
    Mike R.

Beautiful family owned and operated. Definitely a little hidden gem because I had no idea they existed and they've been in the area for generations. I happened to see a picture of the ice cream on Instagram earlier this week so I went to their website - got overwhelmed visually - and so here I went lol. They grow everything they sell and according to staff, raise their own livestock which is slaughtered in Baltimore for their assorted sausage and other meat products. We saw cows as we drove up. Lots of acreage and it sits at the end of a long dusty road - with a couple of decent sized potholes so watch your wheels! Lots of people there with their families picking berries. After strawberry season ends today, I'm told they have blackberry season where you can also go and pick your own berries. Staff also informed me that they catch a lot of overflow from other local farms since they're larger and can handle the added volume after most of the other farms have been picked through. I went there today to try the ice cream though and it certainly didn't disappoint. My two daughters had a cone and the strawberry shortcake respectively and I had a cone with a banana cream pie milkshake (for the road *winks*). The milkshake tasted like I'd bitten into a REAL banana cream pie and the strawberry ice cream is outta this world delicious with chunks of half strawberry folded in. This is a throwback to how good the strawberry ice cream cones used to be at Cherry Hill Farm before they closed years ago - only better. Much richer and denser. This stuff at Miller Farms is more like soft serve these and not very good. Only challenge is today was the last day for it because strawberry season is over - today, for them. *sheds a real tear* This farm has unusual hours (10a-2p). Additionally, the ice cream is only available on the weekends and it's not sold in pints or quarts to go - only as a cone or bowl... Both of which are kind of odd policies frankly but, hey... Small batch/homemade is what they're into it appears. The quality definitely shines through so I won't complain. It's sold from a trailer that sits outside the main barn building where all of the produce, meat products and sauces are sold. Since strawberry season is history now they said they make pumpkin during pumpkin season and apple pie during apple season, etc., so if you miss strawberry you can catch one of the other seasonal flavors. Chocolate and vanilla I think are staples. This farm is a winner. Two thumbs up. Makes for a great little family trip.

rows of strawberries in a field

Parking is right next to the strawberry field which makes it easier to get to/from with little kids. Big field of strawberries to pick from and properly social distance from other people. Some rows are muddier than others so rain boots are better choice of footwear. Price is fair. The market isn't big but has essentials. Food truck has delicious Cool drinks.

We had a great time strawberry picking here with friends! Staff was extremely friendly and the strawberries tasted great!! The only thing I wish the farm had are baked goods with strawberries and/or strawberry smoothies/milkshakes or something since I've learned afterwards that there are some nearby farms with those. But this farm had great strawberries and it's one of the closest strawberry picking farms around DC so definitely worth a visit!

It was supposed to rain all day today but we saw the sun peeking out and decided to try to get to a farm for some berry picking! I saw their info on KidFriendlyDc.com and saw they were the closest farm to us, so off we went! I know we're dealing with COVID so i can't say what a "normal" day would be, but we had a great time. Walked in and we were greeted warmly by the lady running the register and she told us all about the little field we could walk up and down to pick blackberries. We got there with only about 40 minutes to pick, but it was definitely enough time in the heat. There were two other groups there but we had plenty of picking fields to be able to stay distant. Got a bunch of berries and a cute picking basket to reuse next time!

Sweet family owned farm. They were very accommodating to us when we showed up past their closing hours since it was updated on fb but wasn't updated on google. We had a great time picking strawberries and they taste so sweet like candy! Will be back with our family again soon!

Strawberry picking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Check their Facebook page for picking conditions. Google maps took me to the wrong place ( a neighborhood/residential area) so make sure you double check your map directions. They have strawberry salsa cider preserves you name it. Go here and pick your own strawberries!!

My girls picking strawberries at Shlagel farms on a daddy and daughters day!

Literally go to this farm every Saturday morning to pick up fresh vegetable and fruits. Apryl Shlagel's customer service is second to none. When I have questions on a particular vegetable she's always prepared with a a clear and concise answer with a smile on top! My six year old asks to go sometimes just to go to their playground that isom the property next to cows at times and surrounded by fresh product. Not to mention that my girls can't get enough of their time spent in the fields whether it is pick fresh strawberries on the spring or huge green(they prefer this over orange ) pumpkins in the fall. I tell anyone whose listening about this farm whenever possible without being asked.

    Berry happy.

Ooohmygosh so many big, red, juicy berries today! I was so happy to be able to pick my own strawberries, and about 2 weeks before other local farms were ready. One fun-filled hour of picking yielded 2 full trays. I probably should have stopped picking, but the fruit was abundant and ripe, the fields were spacious, clean, and easy to navigate, so...here I am with 15 lbs of berries and an ear-to-ear smile. Thank you, Shlagel! I am indeed berry glad I came. Tip: PYO strawberries cost $3/lb, which doesn't sound pricey, but if you fill up one 18" x 12" tray, it will weigh about 8-10 lbs... Um, yes, I spent $45 on strawberries.

    Beautiful berries!

Shlagel Farms has been around almost a century, and is a small, family-run farm. In the spring and early summer, you can head out to Waldorf to pick-your-own strawberries. In the fall, pick your own pumpkin. It's also a working farm with livestock, as well as produce and plants growing in greenhouses, and hay and alfalfa being grown for livestock feed (which you can buy for your own horse...oh wait, I don't own a horse, either). They encourage families and classes to visit the farm in order to tour and learn about sustainable farming and how food gets from farm to table. There's hay rides and a petting zoo with farm animals as well. Shlagel Farms also makes the rounds of DC-area farm markets. We visit them at the Del Ray market on Saturday mornings where the very friendly workers are all-too-happy to answer questions and help you pick your wares. They feature strawberries, obviously, but also a wide range of other berries in the spring, asparagus, onions, squash, cherries, and all manner of flowers and plants. The selection is small but quality, and at really affordable and competitive prices. We've enjoyed just about everything we've bought from Shlagel, as well as supporting a sustainable, family-run farm.

So impressed with this cute farm! We were hankering to go strawberry picking this weekend, but all of our regular places (Homestead, Butlers, Wegmeyers) all were closed still and not ready for strawberry picking for at least several more days. After a quick search, we saw Shlagel, gave them a call, found out their berries were ready to pick, and decided to head out to Waldorf to see just how good this place is! One awesome thing about Shlagel Farms is its proximity to DC. It only took us about 35 minutes to drive out here, which is way less time than to get to other PYO farms we regularly visit. It's small, but has ample parking and the staff is SO incredibly friendly. Shlagel Farms is alllllll about the strawberries (well, and pumpkins in the fall, I think), but I love places that devote all their energy to one crop. The strawberries are awesome and you'll have no problem filling up your bin ($3/lb). We easily picked 10+ lbs in a very short amount of time. You can also buy their house-made ciders and jams and salsas inside the "market" where you pay, as well as a select few veggies, like Swiss chard, beets, leeks, and spring onions. If you are craving a little sweet something, get a snack from the milkshake truck (although be prepared to wait - they make everything to order, so it can take a while, but it is worth it!). All their strawberry desserts (like shortbread, milkshakes, ice cream) are made with their very own berries. The milkshakes are AWESOME. Definitely get the strawberry one. There is also a very small playground area - best suited for kids probably 3 or 4+....our 2 year old was a bit overwhelmed by all the "big kids"! But there are also animals to watch if that is more your kid's speed. We are really happy we found this place, and will definitely make this one of our regular stops for PYO berry season!

The woman who checked us out was an absolute delight, warm, funny, and exactly what you hope for at a local farm stand. Unfortunately my experience in the herb section was the opposite. When I asked about strawberry plants and was told they didn't have any, I mentioned I was a first time gardener and asked if she could recommend something beginner friendly. Her response was essentially "just pick something, all you have to do is water them." When I explained again that I was new and looking for guidance, she told me she couldn't help me. As a first time gardener trying to learn, that kind of dismissiveness was discouraging. If it weren't for the lovely woman at checkout, I likely wouldn't return. I ended up going to Ed's Plant World in Brandywine where the staff were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful to a beginner. The difference was night and day. That said, I'm giving 4 stars because the place is really awesome in terms of selection and variety. The woman in the herb section may have just been having a bad day. It's absolutely worth checking out.
