Let's be honest, the original Kengo in Downtown Toledo is all about the food and not the atmosphere. The same goes for Shobu by Kengo. The fish is fresh, the combinations of ingredients are expertly prepared, and the flavors shine. But the decor, sounds of the casino, and even the clientele make this an odd choice. Not to say I won't be back, because the next time a friend suggests it, I will absolutely go back to Shobu. In a heartbeat. But with the weird Hollywood Casino parking, chaotic atmosphere, and generally odd vibes, I can't say this will be a place I go out of my way to visit again. That said, shout out to Kengo and everything he's doing, because goddamn the sushi is good.

A fun and innovative place with a rotating menu. You might find udon one week and Yekatori the next.

Where should you go Thanksgiving evening with absolutely no wait and the most delicious sushi? SHOBU! Always the freshest of ingredients and top quality dishes. I really hope this place makes it here at the casino. The service was friendly, quick, and efficient. The inside is a mix of seating, but I wish they would darken up the walls in the alcove. It would really add to the intimacy and coziness. The cocktails are top notch. Tonight we tried this yellow fin collar that was not on the menu, but suggested by our server. So fresh and delicious. It's what I imagine eating fresh fish off the fire on Survivor. The three card stud roll was great and we also ordered scallops, and different veggies wrapped in bacon. Thank you for topping off an incredible holiday!

Had omakase for my birthday recently with my partner. Service was great except the bar that we sat at was right next to the entrance to the kitchen, so sometimes chef's explanation to the dish was overlapped by kitchen staff yelling that the dish was ready. The course overall was delicious. The ingredients were fresh, and the grilled avocado with wasabi topping was something new. The only thing that I will say for it is that the sequence of the menu seemed to be geared towards heavy instead of light. For example, I was served with deliciously grilled yellowtail for the second dish. It def fell on the heavy side, so I was expecting to have something light for the next dish. The next dish was served with tofu with egg custard topped with eel. The broth of the tofu was on the heavy side as well, which brought my appetite down quite a bit. We were served with three overly burnt yakitoris one after the other. We did not finish the yakitoris on purpose to enjoy the sushi afterwards. Overall, it was great, but things could be better. I hope the sequence of the menus will be adjusted so that the entire course is more enjoyable. Other than that, sakes were great and they were greatly priced. I would just go again for the individual menus/sushis instead of omakase.

Great food! Awful ambiance and service. We love the downtown location, this is easier to get a table but wouldn't go back

Expensive, tiny portions. Service was lack luster. Went home and ordered a pizza. Won't go back.

First time here and very surprised on the taste and simple presentation. Great for a snack after a nice win at the tables.

Insane gem in Toledo. I do have to say "no, SERIOUSLY" when I talk about this spot to friends and…read moream generally met with (understandable!) skepticism that sushi in the Midwest could be so phenomenal. 6/5 stars. The omakase is a must experience for any foodie and especially for anyone who loves sushi & yakitori! Came here for the first time 4 years ago, and again a few weeks ago. What struck me is that the same head sushi chef was there then and now and that they haven't really changed the menu too much. Yes absolutely there were new and creative twists, but there are tried and true staples which have been mastered. That feels like their vibe overall - friendly, neighborly, confidence in what they have and will keep doing what they're doing, seemingly resisting any pressure to expand or get bigger. It's perfection! The omakase menu has three phases: chef's kitchen, yakitori, sushi (gorgeous nigiri courses finished with the most insane cut roll I've ever had). Everything is delicious. No misses. My favorite phase is the sushi. We STARTED that off with the most melty buttery otoro. I thought that was bold, surely it could only go downhill from there. I was proved wrong bite after bite!! Seriously, imagine a series of nigiri bites that hold their own after the BEST. Of the yakitori, the chicken meatballs were my fave, so juicy never change. Highest quality, well crafted, expertly executed menu. Lowkey I also love that this omakase ends with the most delicious cut roll, and not dessert. As a savory girl through and through, this is perfect. The onlyyyy downside is that all the rich food gives me a bit of a stomachache afterwards :D. 10000% worth it.

The dining in area is limited but comfortable. Ordering to-go, you'll get the same fresh quality of food and the service is always friendly and process overall is quick and easy. For the summer, definitely try out their sushi or Blvd Bowls, but their ramen on a nice cold day/night (esp. in the winter) is my absolute favorite. It's also a great ramen for when you're feeling sick.

Tasted super fresh despite delivery service. I ordered the panko chicken curry as well. The first time, I ordered Med spicy, then the second time was extra spicy and it was perfect. I broke a sweat. The panko chicken was crunchy and crispy. I ordered the brown rice w it which I only took a few bites of trying to eat it low carb, but the brown rice was good too. There is plenty of parking in the back and you have to walk around to the front for the entrance. Owner looked Japanese and they look like they know what they're doing. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area.

I've been eating sushi/sashimi all over the world for fifty five years and rate them highly. I can't comment on the elaborate sushi rolls; an American invention. I had started telling my wife "I can't believe something can taste this good!" The only other place in Toledo I would have something about which I would say this about was Souk. But then sometime towards the end of last year, the roll changed. It was still pretty good, but not the superb thing I had come to love. So I stopped coming in so often, but still once in a while in the hopes that they would go back to how they used to make it. I'd given up, but today broke down and went in today as I missed it so much. But my hopes were dashed as the roll was just pretty good. So I'll have to start the search to find another place to get my fix for rolls. Another thing is that during this time frame is how most of the time the salad comes out with just a bare dribble of dressing on it. So I guess a plausible explanation for this places downfall may simply be from skimping due to food costs.
