Decided on sushi for our Date Night and there is no place better than Tougen for us We went later in the evening (around 8:30) as we were doing yard work and wanted to miss the crowd. It was good timing as there were only a couple tables filled. Took a while for us to arrive at a decision as Tougen has soooooo many great choices. We ordered Miso Soup as a starter - some of the best we've had. We also ordered some Specialty Rolls: All In; 381; and Crazy Dragon. All In - Shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, spicy crab, mango, cream cheese, and avocado. Eel sauce, spicy mayo, crunch and fish roe. 381- Spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, and crunch. Topped with a layer of tuna and avocado. Eel sauce, spicy mayo and crunch. Crazy Dragon - Spicy crab, cream cheese, and avocado. Topped with spicy tuna and jalapeño and seared. This sushi place has been on my to try list for quite some time. I came here with a friend for dinner and was wowed with the happy hour specials. If you're there for the ambiance and decor, you might want to look somewhere else. This place gives a hole in the wall vibe. If your eyes are sensitive you might have issues as where we sat, all the lights were doing the slightest flickering causing me to have to wear sunglasses the whole meal. Shame on me I have passed this new Sylvania restaurant for months without checking them out. Found out this was a wonderful surprise. They offer a full line of sushi along with ramen noodles choices. We were seated and gave our drink order and after studying the menu we made our entree choices. The presentation and dishes were excellent with quality and quantity was fare for the price. The first time trying this place out and we were welcomed to n with a friendly smile. They have an extensive menu but I was told to try out the bento box. There are so many choices. The one I settled on was Chef Choice of nigiri with your choice of a roll and two apps. I made all the right choices apparently. The peppered tuna slices were so thin and covered in crushed black pepper, tasted like bacon of the sea. The tofu agadashi was also deliciously crispy and tasty. I have been here a couple times and I always order out. However this time I decided to eat in. I noticed it was a little busy so I always come with grace. However we ( My girlfriend and I) decided to eat at the bar. We sat there for 20-30 minutes the only people at the bar and watched as the bartender didn't even ask for our drinks. Other people came and sat at the bar and left before we did. I gave them as much grace as I possibly could because they were busy. But to not even acknowledge us and simply say one second is insanely rude. No drinks!! No food!! No introduction!! Will say me and my people will never again patron this place. read more

I must comment on their ramen. I was craving some ramen and sushi so my sister and I looked up some nearby restaurants, and this came up with high reviews. I was eager to see what the hype was about so we were happy that once we got to the restaurant, we were seated right away. We got the choose three sushi, and had spicy tuna, spicy crab, and Cajun calamari. Along with that I ordered char siu ramen with shoyu broth, which is a soy based broth. This was really good ramen, and the broth was very flavorful. I added some chili oil for some extra heat, and that raised the flavor profile of the dish. Overall, I enjoyed this greatly. As for the sushi, I didn't think the sushi was the best I've had, especially having eaten sushi in bigger cities. It didn't seem very fresh to me, and the only palatable one I enjoyed was the spicy crab. My sister also ordered char-siu ramen with tonkotsu broth, which is a pork bone based broth. She wasn't a fan of the broth and described it as tasting like water. After trying a bit of mine, she did like it. read more

I've never had hot sushi before but I was very impressed with it and would definitely come back as the prices are reasonable and I did love the food and service . You defiantly don't come here for the atmosphere so if your looking for something thsts more of a vibe I would go somewhere else . I don't know where to start. I really love this place. My family and I decided to try this place as a last minute birthday dinner 2 years ago. And we have been coming back almost every month since then. Their sushi is unmatched. I have never had sushi of such a stellar quality and freshness. Not only is their sushi amazing, but also their hibachi is the best in town, we order the steak hibachi with noodles and veggies (pictured below). The lamb and squid skewers are melt in your mouth delicious!!! Please try the Caddy Roll, the Crazy Dragon Roll, the Spicy Salmon roll... or anything! I have yet to have a roll I dislike from this establishment. Also the salmon nigiri is delicious and totally worth every penny!! The staff is extremely friendly. The owner is friendly and interactive and really helps his guests have a good time. The wait staff is attentive and does a great job while handling a full house and taking mobile orders all in the heat of a pandemic. (Which might I add this restaurant has done and continues to do a great job with cleanliness and sanitation throughout the past year and a half during COVID). Sitting in a strip mall with some of the best BBQ, Indian and Farm to Table in the area, Tougen has a lot of pressure to help solidify this strip mall into the foodie destination it's destined to be. And you know what, I think they're going to do it! On our first visit, we enjoyed two bento boxes and some wasabi pork shumai. I tried the bento box #3 which comes with 7 pieces of sashimi, along with 2 appetizers and a roll. I tried the agadashi tofu and the crab sunomono, along with a shrimp and avocado roll. Our meals of course also came with the classic iceberg salad and miso soup, which were both very good. First up, I have to say the only "disappointment" was the wasabi pork shumai. I used the word disappointment loosely because it wasn't bad. I just didn't expect it to be fried and crispy, and expected a stronger wasabi flavor. As for my box, it was AWESOME. The sashimi was surprisingly fresh and well-cut. Like I could have just eaten a giant plate of the fish and I would have been very happy. The crab sunomono (shredded seafood and veggie salad) was refreshing and sweet. The agadashi tofu was fantastic. I'm used to flat pieces floating in sauce, but not here. Instead it was cubed and nicely fried, covered in bento flakes with the sauce on the side. And the roll? It was good! Next time I will try some of the specialty rolls and do a deeper dive into the sashimi offerings. The staff is super friendly and the space is super clean. There is no question I will be back. Even if you're not in that part of town, it's worth a trip to try out what I will say... is some of the best sushi in NW Ohio for the price, if not some of the best sushi compared to places a bit more expensive. read more

This place has been open for a little over 2 months. It's small and quaint. The service was friendly and attentive. All 3 of us enjoyed our sushi (in total, we tried 6 special rolls and fried rice). They also gave us a taste of their special mushroom appetizer. Was extremely happy with my Crazy Dragon Roll. I probably wouldn't order they Playboy again because I'm not a huge fan of fried food and there was quite a bit with the fried shrimp and crab. Fresh, very good sushi with a large selection for all guests. Thir menu also includes several choices of hibachi and teriyaki entrees. They even went out of their way to put together a vegan roll (with tofu) for our friend. They recently expanded the dining area but the owner indicted that things didn't go as planned, so they are still working on finishing the work. Overlook the current "in progress" renovation, and you will enjoy the food for its quality and value. read more

We don't know our way around sushi very much at all, but we certainly know we like this place a lot! It's a small place, yet we've never had to wait for a table which is odd as the food is so good and they have such good reviews too. We've only been in for lunch, but the thing we get most of the time is a two roll lunch special. It's two rolls picked off a list of basic ones. I most of the time just get California rolls. But with those two rolls you get their soup and ginger salad. The soup is basic with not much seemingly in it, but it is quite good. And the salad is wonderful too. The whole meal all around is great. And this special is just ten bucks too. I've gotten my wife to go here somewhat recently and now she's hooked too. I just need a sushi for dummys class so we can get more out of this type of food. read more

This place is a neat little find and I can't wait to go back. We found this place when a place we go to a lot was closed. Our gain. It's small (cozy) with a few booths and tables and a small sushi bar. They have sushi/sashimi combos and all the standard Japanese cuisine dishes. I got a salmon teriyaki dish that was delicious. It came with soup and salad, both which were very good, too. My friend who doesn't eat sushi got the vegetable tempura combo, which came with soup and salad. She loved it and said the batter was the lightest and least oily she had ever had. One down side is they don't have a liquor license, but the server told me they don't have a problem with diners bringing in something of their own. Pretty cool. Tougen is one of my favorite sushi spots in Toledo. The service is top notch, and it is not super noisy or full of pretentious clientele. It's not very big, which I think is a plus, because you get a more intimate experience. I feel like I can eat my meal in peace and not have to yell in order to communicate with the person I came here with. Plus I can wear my casual outfit and still get an amazing meal for a very good price! My boyfriend and I come here once a week, and even though they have an amazing selection, we have found our favorites. The owner (Jung/John?) even remembers our order, which I think is a nice touch. I love their chirashi (sushi rice with raw fish on top). The fish is fresh, and every time I order it I get a different selection of fish, which is always fun. I also love the special furikake topping they put on the rice because it is seriously addictive, I dream about it at work all the time. Also, I think it is a great price for the quality and the amount of food that you get. My boyfriend usually gets the Jade roll and a couple of small rolls. All the rolls are delicious, and I do think the Jade roll is a must try (it's also pretty photogenic, if you care about this sort of thing). I do like that my chirashi and his sushi combo comes with miso soup and salad, since not all the sushi places in the area do this. As far as the quality of raw fish goes, Tougen is in my top 3 sushi restaurants in the Toledo area (Kengo and DOMO being the other 2). I avoid eating raw fish in other places because I feel iffy about their quality. YOU HAVE TO TRY THEIR TAMAGO! It's the best tamago (Japanese egg omelette) that I ever had, especially when it is still warm because a new batch was just prepared. Just thinking about it makes me drool!!! They are super friendly, kind, always make you feel welcome and make sure you are happy with your experience. Furthermore, you never have to wait for a table or for your sushi too long, which is a huge plus! From what I heard, they are going to be getting a soda machine soon, so that will only add to the experience. I can't wait to try the other items on their menu! I love this place! Very good, very reasonable prices! Went there on a Saturday and ordered the Alaska, 2 regular salmon maki rolls, and a shrimp tempura. 4 rolls were only $15! We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer which was quite good as well. Even the side salad was delicious. We had gotten there as soon as they opened for dinner and were served quickly. It seems like I totally misunderstood my experience, things were perfect and he actually is a nice guy who treated his customer really well. Excellent example how to do service recovery. This is the chef/manager for tougen. I'm just curious, why do you have to lie in your review. Are you afraid that the truth will make you look bad? So you have to lie to make me look bad? At what point did i tell you to leave? At what point did my server apologize to you profusely? My server is not embarrassed that he works here. And of course, you also forgot to mention that i did issue you the refund that you were demanding. And why didn't you bother to mention that my server offered to deliver the missing food to you to make up for a simple mistake. And believe it or not, i didn't even know you were yelling at me in the first place that's why you thought i was ignoring you. And my answer to you that day, regarding don't i think it should be free, for me. When i go out and eat. I will see what the situation is. I normally won't go in demanding for free food for just some simple mistakes especially since they offered to fix the problem.
