Sushi always come out fresh and correct. Friendly servers. I always get the Maki to roll lunch because it's exact amount of food I want to eat for lunch. If it's your first time to go, if you order the little salad, which is basically head lettuce, but very fresh, have the dressing put on the side. Although it's good, they put a lot on it. I'm pretty boring, but my favorite is the avocado roll. Second favorite: tuna and avocado roll. The only thing that is weird is it is kind of warm where you said but not unbearable. It seems as if the AC doesn't work right but I doubt that's so. I recommend Shogun. To be honest, I have not used the hibachi there in a long time so I cannot comment on that. read more

Decent Japanese spot offering lunch specials and hibachi. I stopped by on a weekday for a quick lunch. The interior is spacious with plenty of seating. Had the chicken katsu bento box and the shrimp tempura appetizer. The bento box was fine. It felt a bit rice-heavy since it comes with a sizable portion of white rice as well as a California roll. I suppose it's a good portion for the price. The tempura on the other hand was a bit greasy and the breading seemed a bit thick. May need to eat through the menu a bit more or try the hibachi until I can say more, but 3 stars for now. read more

That was seriously some of the worst Asian food I've ever had. The soups had zero flavor. The only thing good were the salads with the sesame ginger dressing. My seafood soup had no taste. My red bird sushi roll would have been good except my shrimp smelled and tasted like ammonia which means it's bad. My yakisoba had zero flavor. It was all really bad except the salad. Hadn't been here in a long time, now I remember why. They have a great business here in Cape. I'm not really sure why except for the hibachi style cooking where they make your high priced fried rice. We sat in the bar area because everything else was full. We got our green tea, Miso soup and ordered. One hour later our food arrived. Not sure how long our chicken and vegetables had set in the window but the chicken was hard and dry. We split that chicken and veggie then I proceeded to take on the sushi that we ordered. Not even worth mentioning the types of rolls that we chose because they were way below status quo. I have eaten a lot of sushi. This was on par with your run of the mill typical Americanized Chinese fare sushi that they serve at your local Chinese diner. They even have a Sushi Chef! Not really sure what was going on here. I bit in to the first piece and found the rice to be dry and grainy. Now to uninitiated, the rice may not seem like a big deal. Rice is Rice? Right? Not even close. This tasted like regular long grain rice from Walmart. Sushi rice should be moist, smooth and compliment the complex tastes that make up your Sushi roll. Most Sushi Rice is Japanese, not sure where this came from. I ate one piece and was done. I actually did complain about the Sushi, (I'm not a big complainer) but this was terrible. She expressed concern, took the ticket back to the register and brought it back. I figured she might take some of the price off. WRONG! Same price. I guess she figured white boy doesn't know his rice. Whatever, I'm not into making a scene. I just paid and left $50.00 lighter. Oh, well, lesson learned. Shogun Sushi is a surprisingly good find for sushi in Cape G! The restaurant is located in a strip mall, but the interior is welcoming and relaxing. When I crave sushi in Cape, this is where I go! Nice variety of original and specialty sushi rolls to choose from. Be sure to try the specialty rolls (i.e. The Jessie, The New Moon, and The Spider, etc.)--they are delicious and filling. Expect to spend around $40.00+ for two people for drinks, appetizers, and sushi at dinner time. Good lunch specials and speedy service. Just let the server know when you need to leave. Slow service, terrible sushi and a sushi chef who tried to make us feel very unwelcome. We arrived at 4 pm for a late lunch. We were the only two customers there. All we wanted were a few sushi rolls. We sat at the sushi bar. No hello or reaction from the sushi chef which was weird. He stood and stared at us until we chose a few rolls after the server gave us menus. They have a big sushi menu so it took 8-10 minutes to choose. When he finished the rolls they looked terrible. They were flattened, not enough rice and the tempura was oily and not even close to crispy. While we tried to eat, what that guy called sushi, he continued to stare at us. When I mean stare I mean stood there not moving and looked straight at us. When we tried to joke around with the sushi chef he never responded. Never again will I walk into that Shogun. read more

Stopped in for dinner here. Took about 15 minutes and nearly an hour from the time I ordered to get my soup/salad and sushi respectively. Miso soup was pretty good. House salad was as well but was swimming in dressing. I had mixed opinions about sushi. My nigiri had very generous slices of fish (tuna, salmon, red snapper). However, the rice itself was crumbling with each piece of sushi I picked up. For the California roll, same issue and it was a bit skimpy on the filling. When I lived in town, this was one of my favorite places. The soup and salad starters are SO good, the sushi specials are always reasonably priced, and the entrees are huge. The drinks were pretty good too, although the service on them was a little slow. Don't let the entrance or the questionable looking carpet fool you, this place has delicious food. I've had a hard time finding somewhere else that has as good of flavor in everything they make. I couldn't tell you my favorite sushi roll, because I never had a bad one. I would also suggest sitting in the dining area unless you're really interested in the hibachi show. Things move faster and the seating is way more comfortable in the regular dining. read more

Ate here once when they first opened at their new location (moved a few blocks away). Was not impressed. Decided to give them a second chance. Nope, never again. For starters no one speaks any English so it's extremely hard to communicate. Ordered the chicken, no veggies, extra rice. The rice was dry, hard and bland. The chicken was bland. I got no extra rice but somehow managed to get ALL of the vegetables. How is that possible?? The yum yum sauce had a mayonnaise taste. The food was just subpar. My partner wanted to find a place that he would enjoy and that might be diet-friendly for me; Japanese seemed to fit the bill and we hadn't tried Shogun. The time or two we've eaten Asian food in Cape, we've gone to Watami. We love trying new or off the beaten path establishments, however, so we opted for Shogun this hot Sunday afternoon. First impression - the decor was quite dated; I don't really rank based on atmosphere usually, but this place needed new flooring, new booths, new menus. The menu contained plenty of options; sushi, hibachi and traditional Asian fare. As I was not overly hungry, I choose the tuna roll from the sushi menu. My partner went with the teriyaki chicken with friend rice. The precursors to the meal - salad with yum yum sauce and a cup of soup - were lackluster. The yum yum sauce seemed grainy and the soup very weak and bland. The entrees were a little better. My partner enjoyed his chicken and rice - I thought the rice had an odd taste to it although the chicken was decent. The highlight of my meal was the sushi. It was pretty decent dipped in wasabi and soy sauce. I would have given three stars based on the sushi alone. Unfortunately the restaurant failed in service - we were only the third table being served, and it took forever to get drink refills. If you want good Japanese food and sushi in Cape - skip Shogun and go to Watami. read more

We didn't eat on the hibachi side so it very well may be much better however, the sushi was terrible! Smelled fishy, lackluster and poor texture. The service was even worse. Edamame came out cold as did the miso. Waited 20 minutes for drink refills and over an hour for food. read more

This is the first day they have been open in the new location on William. The new decor looks great. A much needed move from there old location. They were the Japanese steak house and sushi place in town and excited for them to get a facelift . Always have Ben particular to the sushi here over the other places but just outdated. I'm never coming here ever again. Not only were they EXTREMELY slow, when we were the only people in the entire resturaunt, but they also overcharged me $4. We were in a huge hurry because we had already been there for an hour before they even started making our food, so i didnt even have time to correct it. I enjoyed the food a great deal. I ordered 3 sushi rolls and they were very tasty but very small. I would say that the rolls were 30% smaller than any place that I have gone to and I go for sushi all of the time. If the portions were normal size, it would have been excellent. First I will start off by saying that I have never left a review before, but after our experience last night I just feel it is the right thing to do. We have been going to this restaurant since we moved here almost 7 years ago, and it has been one of our most favorite places to eat for special occasions. However, it seems the last few times we have been there it has gotten worse and worse until last night it hit rock bottom, and we will not be going there ever again as have given this restaurant several opportunities hoping each time it was worse it was just a bad night or a fluke, but now it is clear to us that this restaurant is clearly not worth going to and is a complete waste of hard-earned money. First, the service has been moderate at best being slow and not very friendly and with no concern to their customers' satisfaction. And considering the very, very high prices for the area you expect excellent service! Last night our waittress was obviously stressed and too busy to wait on us and explain menu items and clearly did not have the English skills to communicate with us properly and was totally unconcerned about anything other than getting our order and getting paid. She served appetizers without individual plates. The food was cold when it was served. She would not let my 12 year old daughter who was not feeling well order off of the children's menu, and made her buy a $19 meal that she could not eat. None of the food was good at all and was clearly not worth the $129 bill. The appetizers were cold and not fresh. We each had hibachi steak or shrimp. All of our meals were cold when served like they had either sat there for too long or had been warmed up in a microwave and did not retain their heat. My steak meal had a piece of chicken in it, which I found very odd. The fried rice was clearly NOT FRIED and tasted terrible! Honestly, how can you ruin rice? But this was the worst rice I had EVER EATEN at any restaurant! I was almost afraid I was going to get sick afterwards and did not eat it, because it had an OFF taste to it that did not taste like any ingredient that is usually in fried rice. Their prices have clearly gone up since the last time we went there. Our meals were all around $18 apiece. The amount of vegetables and food has gone down. The quality is terrible. And our bill I might add of $129 for 5 people only included two drinks like a soda and tea and the rest was water. It is just too pricey for this area to begin with, so if they are going to charge those kind of prices, they need to at least serve quality food and service with it. read more

The Sushi is fairly expensive but also one of the more acceptable sushi places in Missouri - outside of St. Louis that is. The staff is generally helpful, but the atmosphere in the restaurant is just intolerable. There is NO WHERE you can be free from the horrible noise that their showman-chefs cause. Other Japanese restaurants seem to be nearly identical to this one, so there's really nothing special about it. read more

Visiting the Cape this weekend from Kansas City for my daughters new student orientation at SEMO. Great surprise as to how good the shushi and sashimi is here. Huge roll menu with some surprising combinations. Definitely worth the visit. We will be back. read more

My wife and I love the sushi at Shogun more than the other places in Cape. We like to keep track of the rolls we've eaten, so we can make sure we try something new most every time we go. Nice place, pretty good food and service. My family has had very poor experiences at the other hibachi restaurant in Cape and we've been reluctant to try Shogun. See my two reviews of Watami. Yikes. Shogun is well-lit and clean and the staff is very friendly. My family and I had hibachi meals and they were good, but nothing to write home about. Our chef was nice, but all of us had steaks and they were totally over cooked. I also had scallops and they were only seared on one side and two were gritty. My husband also had shrimp and it was good. The veggies were undercooked. I would give this place another chance. read more

We have only had sushi here and at Watami, so I can't compare to Bistro Saffron. Sushi is excellent, prices are great. Husband orders hibachi style and loves it. The ambience isn't probably what you would find at Bistro but we have two young kids, so this suits us just fine! read more

Best sushi in town. The service is unfailingly fast and very attentive. We go often enough that the wait staff recognize us and remember our preferences. I can't say much about the hibachi offerings, as I've only had that a couple of times, though when I did that was good as well, and a pretty good show by the chef. First off the place was fairly clean but definitely older building. Let's look at the food. Shogun compared to Watami another hibachi in town, Shogun you can choose Miso soup or salad where Watami you get both. You can get both at Shogun but are charged extra. Miso soup was nasty compared to Watami's which is awesome. The crab Rangoon, fried dumplings and springs rolls were awesome and comparable to Watami. What I liked about Shogun over Watami is you can use combo meats and they cut the meat into smaller bite-sized pieces. As far as taste, both places are good though. Sauces are also good at both. Next, my mother in law saw a waitress drop a fork in the floor and put it back into the fork holder. Keep in mind, I said fairly clean not perfectly or nearly perfectly clean. And finally our waitress was MIA most of the hibachi time so most of us ran out of drinks and were impatiently waiting while dying of thirst. May go back not sure yet read more

One of my favorite lunch spots. I really like the Bento Boxes. You get a nice variety of items for a really good price. I always walk away feeling like I ate something clean from Shoguns. I've gone for dinner on multiple occasions but it's just not the same. I just want my lunch Bento Box for the lunch price. read more
