During our most recent visit, the service was terrible. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon. Plenty of available seats. We didn't have a reservation, but they sat us immediately. We waited for over 15 minutes and finally asked someone passing by if we could get a waiter/waitress. She apologized and brought us waters. The waitress finally arrived, took our order and left a plate of relish. Another waiter brought our food out and we never saw our server again. I asked the hostess for a refill on my water and for the check at the end of the meal. The food was delicious, but with this service, we won't be back for a while. It's unfortunate. read more

Our group of five family members had had a lovely lunch here on a recent Tuesday. The only negative was that service was very slow between the time we received our appetizers and when the main courses arrived. We gave The Southerner a try when we had an overnight stay in Cape Girardeau. Overall everything was good. The kids menu options were extensive and had very good sized portions. The catfish, salad, and grits were all delicious. My only complaint on the food was that my tacos were a bit on the dry side. I think if I had gotten the fish option they would have been better. My shrimp and grits was...okay. It did have this delicious tangy relish on it that made the whole dish come together-wish it had more relish. Overall a good meal and drinks were good too. I appreciated the option of a smaller sized entree of shrimp and grits. Husband's burger had to be eaten with a knife and fork as the bottom bun was too soggy from the (very tasty) sauce to pick up. Dress as classy or as casual as you want. Great intimate restaurant. It was pretty dark inside so reading the menu without a light can be a challenge. I only got a picture of the relish tray because I didn't want to annoy my neighboring diners with my camera flash. I was in town for an expo and ate the Southerner Cobb salad two days in a row. Had the poke bowl last night, it was good! Fish was fresh, lots of edamame and greens, and the ginger soy glaze was delicious. I don't think it needs the cilantro dressing with it, unless you want a Latin twist on an Asian cuisine. The rice texture was more al dente than I prefer. I ordered takeout from my room at the hotel connected to the restaurant. The staff was courteous over the phone as well as in the restaurant. The hostess wasn't at the front area when I arrived, so I had to check in with the bartender instead. It was fine. I paid for my order and the hostess asked if I would like some bread to go with it. The restaurant was much smaller than I had assumed it would be. A few tables in the bar area as well as a regular dining area that could seat 30 or so people. For a large hotel attached, I was expecting a larger dining room. My business partner got the meatloaf, which came with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. He said it was lovely, but he was confused with the addition of cheese in the meatloaf. All and all a solid spot to eat when you're a long way from home and are in need of a comforting meal. UPDATE: Ordered To-Go for the 10th or so time since I've been here. I always tip and have courteous service upon arrival. Today I was handled by the Manager. The guy had no smile and weird vibes. After I pay he proceeds to simply hand me my poke bowl container - NO BAG, NO UTENSILS, NO NAPKINS. So I ask him for a bag, and he gets it, however he seems put out by my request. I leave thinking maybe I can get by without utensils...but that's nonsense. I went back and requested some from the bartender. I have NEVER gotten takeout without being given the proper accoutrements. Annnnnd this will be my last meal here for the duration of my stay. read more

Next came my salad, a bagged salad that wasn't very good. You would think for the price, I was going to get a fresh salad. Then came the grits! They were actually more sweet than savory. Never had sweet grits (even at breakfast). Way too much butter, oil, grease pooling around the grits. Worst I have ever had. Got an ooey gooey butter cake to go (dry and not very good). When me and my daughter walked in, my daughter says "Ooo this place looks fancy :)" and it did. A nice place with pretty good food. Our server was really nice and kind to my daughter. I had such a great experience at Southern by Tractor again. I decided to try something else, and Jack our waiter recommended the blackened redfish. It was absolutely delicious, it had a spicy kick like he started. He also recommended the dessert for the day. The category 5 soco hurrican was strong and tasty, i was feeling a little tipsy after one drink. I just have to say all of Jack recommendations were on point! The whole dinning experience was great. Service and food were just bad. If you get Sara as your waitress just leave. She will forget half of your food in the kitchen and does not like to refill empty water. First and last visit here. Also the fan used to dry the place out from a leak makes some seats an ice box to sit at. Health department should take a look at how filthy the wall is above the picture across where we were sitting. Management also does not care. Asked us to come back and give them another chance when we had to flag down another waitress to get the bill after waiting for about 20 min to see her to ask for the bill. Sorry we just spent $40 on dinner and left hungry. Time to grab food from somewhere before the hour drive home. I had the lunch portion chicken tenders, and they were so big I couldn't finish. Again, delicious. It came with a side and I tried the soup of the day-- potato soup-- which was delightful. My meal was also 5 stars. My fiancé had the pulled pork Mac n cheese. The pork, BBQ sauce, and Mac n cheese were all delicious. The sweet potato chips, however, were very soggy to the point of being inedible, so he said his was more like four stars. Our waitress was fantastic and polite. Thanks to Yelp for clueing me in to this place. We grabbed carry out from here while e route to Memphis. We ordered Gouda stuffed meatloaf and catfish nuggets. Meatloaf came with green beans and smashed garlic potatoes. Potatoes still had skin on them - which I take to mean house made. I picked sweet potato chips and fresh broccoli. All the sides were great although the chips were not at their best after being trapped in go container with hot fish and hush puppies. The puppies had jalapeño but not too spicy. All in all we were very happy with our choices! I hate meatloaf but had to agree that theirs was good. This place looked to have a nice atmosphere. Seems to be fairly new. read more

This place is one of those rare off the beaten path jewels for great Southern foods, Always enjoy coming here always something different every time I come that makes it unique. No fast food here they have a chef. I decided to have the shrimp scampi- with a nice garden salad and asked for the bacon vinaigrette dressing as I had not had that dressing in ages it was wonderful. Only thing missing was bacon on top of the salad as it was one of the better salads I had in Cape in a long time. The ice tea was great as well. I would highly suggest this place for special occasions or events but for me I would put it on a must to do places to check out and eat their regularity. I like to go around 3pm when there is no crowds so I can enjoy my meal without a bunch of noise. Got the nashville hot chicken tenders as our starter and it was delicious! The batter had an airy crisp, and the chicken was so juicy. The white bbq sauce paired well with the seasoning on the chicken. The dish came with 5 decent sized tenders, enough to share between 3-5 people. I ordered the meatloaf and subbed the green beans for gouda mac n cheese. The meatloaf was delicous! It was super smoky and flavorful. The sides were also good: smashed potatoes were buttery and garlicky, and the mac n cheese was creamy and subtly smoky from the gouda. The interior is beautiful and staff are extremely friendly.
