I was very disappointed in the food when visiting the restaurant. Salmon and steak were all OVERCOOKED. And the meals came out for our group in staggered times. One was almost done eating before meals arrived for others. And then was missing a side dish. Waiter was attentive when we arrived, but then disappeared after food was finally delivered. Really food sushi! We're from California, Orange County, and this sushi is really good, it's similar to sushi we used to get back home. Its the best we've had in this area. Jaka was such a good server! He was friendly and really nice. We both liked how they had hibachi style food, plus a full service/bar area for sushi. I got the Sashimi platter and it was super good! Environment gets a 2/5. Food gets a 4/5. Value 5/5. I recommend coming for lunch or happy hour. You will be able to get the most bang for your buck during these times. They also offer takeout, but I don't think you can get any deals on that. I'm a regular, I make the trip from St. Peter once about every two weeks, sometimes more. If you're debating between Tokyo sushi and Shogun, go to shogun. Huge portion for each roll and a lovely selection of their specialty rolls, my fave is the ninja, which on happy hour is only $6. They have hibachi as well, and I've gotten it for a lunch deal before and it was pretty good! Sushi is delicious in general. The ambiance plain sucks. Like it's hard to not be distracted by the neon colors behind the bar, the disco balls on the other side and the annoying birthday song. If it weren't for that, it could be a nice place! The obnoxiously loud and annoying birthday song has got to stop. That alone makes me never want to come back or recommend this place. It's embarrassing. read more

My wife's favorite place in town for sushi while I prefer Tokyo Sushi and Hibachi. On this occasion we were here for her birthday and got this crazy platter that looked like a dragon. It was probably my favorite visit here. I wish I could leave a zero star review! I am absolutely baffled... my family has a reservation at 6:30, we weren't sat for 30 minutes which sucks but whatever. We put in our drink and food orders. An hour and a half after our reservation time no one has come over to check on us or start our food. Other people have shown up and their food was started within 10 minutes. We love this place. The food is consistently delicious and the service is excellent. We particularly like the hibachi dinner (not the show, although that is fun too), the one served at the regular tables. My wife loves the huge, perfectly seared scallops. I prefer the filet, cooked the way you want it. We usually eat half the meal there and bring the rest home. The portions are very generous. We eat here every couple of weeks and find the staff delightful and attentive. We always bring out of town guests here for a real treat. Don't be put off by the strip mall location, it's nice and welcoming inside. read more

So I went in just after five o'clock and asked the server which rolls are 50% off. He told me that they have a happy hour menu but the rolls are not 50% off. They looked almost full price, I told him that his sign says rolls are 50% off. He said only they are not. So I walked out and went to Tokyo which has 50% off all of their rolls during happy hour. Went here with my parents (from LA but always go to MN for Xmas) in December. My parents and sister went for Hibachi. I'm a veggiehead so I ordered the veggie plate. Imagine my disappointment when the cook started using the same utensil to mix the veggies as the 3 kinds of meat. Not just once. Over and over and over. When my plate was given to me I ate the rice and that's it (since it was the only thing not mixed with meat). When we left my mom, unbeknownst to me, went to the owner and advised her to not mix the meat and veggies for vegetarians. The owner asked if "I had told the cook I was vegetarian." I did not because they took the orders before the cook started doing his thing. And when you see "veggie" on the order I assume that automatically means "do not mix with meat". The owner fixed me a plate of rice and veggies and gave it to my mom. My family enjoyed themselves so I was happy enough but would have given this place a 3-star rating because I was only able to eat rice. The fact that they cooked me a meal after the fact means they are listening and apologetic and earned a 4-star. The owner said from now on their cooks will cook veggie plates separate from meat plates. Guess I'll find out if that's true during my visit this year. :) read more

Today we went in and had a server who was absolutely atrocious, his attitude was terrible and he told us it was his last day so he didn't care. Thank god he won't be working again, Andy the cook was a great ray of sunshine in the rudeness of our server and we made sure to tip him directly. Attempted to have dinner at shogun tonight, very friendly and cheerful waitress Shirley attempted to wait on us, however some young man (I believe his name was Kevin) came over and told her she was not our waitress and made her stop waiting on us, right in front of us. We sat there for five minutes waiting on whomever was supposed to be our waitress to show up, to no avail. So we got up and left and went elsewhere for dinner. Needless to stay extremely poor experience from a service perspective. I would suggest that Shirley apparently needs to be the manager of the place, because she is clearly the only one that knows how to speak to customers or employees. read more

Decent sushi. Not the best I've ever had but not the worst. Picked it up because of COVID-19 and they were wearing masks and gloves which is great! The simple sushi rolls fell apart often while using chopsticks. The fried rolls were okay but nothing special/ flavorful. The gyoza was super good! The decor is fresh and modern, which matched their food. The prices are reasonable and because of their great deals I have made it my new Friday night drinking spot. Amazing! Would definitely recommend as a must go to while in Mankato! Make sure you make reservations before you go if you have a big group. I went here with family after my sisters graduation and will definitely be back night time I'm in the area. The hibachi grill was amazing. The cook made the food right in front of us and definitely put on a great show. He was super funny and made sure everyone had a good time. Plus the drinks are amazing. I had a mango mojito that was great. The only complaint is that we did have to wait a little while for the cook to come to the table to make our food, but the wait was worth it once we got our food. 3.5 stars for food, additional .5 for having Hamachi Kama (Yellowtail collar) on the menu and their courteous and friendly service. We went to Shogun at lunch time and had the Maki lunch specials (two or three rolls your choice with either miso soup or salad) and Hamachi Kama. The server was prompt and polite and we were served our soup and salad right away. The miso soup was a bit thin and the ginger dressing on the salad was a bit too sweet for my taste. You rarely find Hamachi Kama on the menu anywhere so I was happy when I saw it on theirs and got even happier when it came out seasoned and cooked perfectly. We devoured it! The rolls were pretty good too, though I'd prefer a bit more seasoning in the rice myself. The raw fish was fresh and sauces were tasty and subtle enough they didn't overpower the other ingredients. My companion loved the shrimp tempura roll. One big negative: the lady who was cleaning tables put dirty dishes from another table on our table while picking up our dishes... yikes! Server didn't notify us that they didn't have items that were part of our sushi so when we ordered it came basically as a California roll but we ordered a New Crunch. They didn't put attention to not wanting spicy Mayo (I have IBS and my daughter isn't about that spicy life). On top of it the Miso soup was VERY cold! I do have to say that the Udon soup was good, but the chicken tasted off. As well when a different server came up to us and we informed them that our sushi was missing items he said they had been out for awhile so we were even more so like why weren't we notified then. When the original server came we told him that he didn't inform us and he just said ok, we don't have it and we were like ooookk?? Why not say that in the beginning then? Especially when we did ask for ONE of the three orders to not have masago. Overall it took forever to get assistance, the sushi wasn't anything to talk about or suggest, and there just won't be a next time for us. We wish we had a delicious time as we all love sushi but sadly it wasn't meant. read more

With dread I write this update to my previously glowing 5 star recommendation. :( My husband and I have returned to Shogun about 4 times in the last 3 months and chose not to do hibachi but rather the seated restaurant. Our experiences have been less than stellar I am sad to report. Service: Table service leaves alot to be desired. Slow to fill drink orders, even slower refills. I also suspect due to lack of English skills sometimes the wrong drink/beer arrives. One time our soup and salad were forgotten so they were served after the entree - this is poor service and should have automatically resulted in a reduced price or free wine refill or SOMETHING but no, nothing, not even a sorry. Food: Now this I really hesitate to report but I am committed to telling the truth at all times - I am a scallop LOVER so I have ordered twice the teriyaki scallops. BOTH times they have skimped on the scallops and CUT THEM IN HALF across - so they are trying to deceive you into thinking you have 6 scallops but really what you have are three of them. I have NEVER seen this occur in another restaurant and quite frankly this is cheap, dishonest and betrays a serious problem. I am not ok with paying $17.95 for 3 scallops, a half a cup of veggies and a small scoop of rice. Anyone who loves scallops will know they are half thickness, then when you sear them halved like this they come out chewy. Our experiences at the Hibachi tables was always so positive. I don't know if this is a change to the restaurant or just a contrast but really should it make a difference where you sit? Atmosphere: still great - I see its getting busier and there are now waits on Fri and Sat nights but I never complain about waits. I don't mind waiting for good food and service but I do mind waiting for a table then getting crappy service and half a food order. BIGGEST PROBLEM: THE BILL - we ordered short pour beers, three tap Sapporo's to be exact and we were charged for four talls. WTF? Seriously this was a huge tick off factor and the last straw. We pointed out the error and they did fix it but that should never happen. I wonder, given the dishonest practices with food service if this was even an accident. I hope so. If anyone from Shogun ever reads this - here some advice: When YOU make a mistake like this it will irritate your customer, it is customary in the US to refund your mistake at least in part to demonstrate your good will and desire to maintain satisfaction with your business. Fixing your mistake will result in an even higher opinion of you then if you'd not made the mistake in the first place. I can no longer recommend this restaurant, which makes me sad. Do not make reservations because there's no point!! Made a reservation at 7:15 on Valentine's Day (yes it's expected to be busy hence the reservations) BUT we didn't get seated until an HOUR later . We tried to get drinks while we waited and that took almost a half hour. Almost 2 hours after our reservation and still no food, chef or drinks. There has yet to be ANY courtesy of an apology or any of the sort for the long wait. read more

I've worked at a restaurant for 3 years so I get how hard it is, but it was just ridiculous. First, the food took 40 minutes...and by the time it came she only remembered to ring in my hibachi order and not my sushi...so I had to go up to the sushi counter and asked them where it was myself (because I hadnt seen our server since she took our order) that was the other thing....after our server took our order we never saw her again.... Shogun's sushi is pretty reasonably priced to begin with... but when you go during happy hour they have rolls for as little as $2.50... my wife and I were able to order drinks and eat until we couldn't eat any more and the bill was less than 25. Going in with middling expectations, I was surprised. We went for the Hibachi dinner and were told to wait a few minutes. We looked at the menu while we waited, noticing the prices were a bit high. After a few minutes we were seated. Once again, we had to wait for our table top fill up and for a Hibachi chef to arrive. Once he fired up the grill - literally - we were treated to some excellent fried rice, veggies, chicken, and shrimp. There was plenty of it, too. When we asked about being seated at the grill, we found out that it wasn't available for lunch. Thankfully Shogun saved the day! We walked in and were quickly greeted and seated. Nice atmosphere. Would recommend putting in a reservation if you want to get into this place. For whatever reason, was packed on Tuesday afternoon. Great for a show in hibachi and the food is alright. I'd give the food itself a 6/10, the customer service and everything else was a good 7.5/10 not greatest hibachi I've ever had, but it's southern Minnesota. read more
