I came here with two clients for a business lunch and the one clients was raving about this place. He insisted that it was probably the best Japanese style Hibachi he found in the area. He also insisted that we all try an egg roll. He said that they were incredible. The egg rolls were indeed pretty spectacular, possibly the best egg roll that I have had in the southeastern United States. For my entree I had what they called Eddie's Special. I will say that this was also I genuinely excellence entree. The food came out very fast, possibly too fast. But they never rushed us as we sat and talked after we finished our meal. Shonos has been a long time favorite of mine and it has currently come under new management. There have been very few changes but the biggest change is they are now serving sushi and it is FABULOUS. I was lucky enough to be able to sample multiple different rolls and they were all really good. My favorite two were there the Vegas Summer roll and the Spicy Dream roll with the a super Crunch and Shonos Roll both coming in a close second. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant would probably land a spot in some of my favorite restaurants that I have been to. It's honestly hard to even notice this place, as it doesn't stand out whatsoever. The inside is rather basic too but the food speaks for itself. I always get the "Eddies Special" which is what I would recommend to anyone visiting here, it is by far the most popular dish. The meal itself is a plate of rice, veggies, and meat. It might seem basic but everything has an enormous amount of umami. I honestly have no clue how something so simple is so delicious. One of the biggest standouts here though is their homemade sauce...I will drench my food in the sauce and it doesn't overpower any flavors, it just adds even more flavor. If you have never been here, just go. I introduced a family member to here and they have gone back here 4 times within 2 weeks, which speaks for itself. read more

I ventured to Shonos for the first time in a while and enjoyed my meal just as much as always. They always do a great job and the service is excellent. You are going to have your food in less than 10 minutes after you order and it's a huge serving. I went with the Eddie special and shrimp combo. It was amazing and the meat was seasoned nicely. We discovered this little Japanese restaurant for lunch today. It is located in the Hoover Commons shopping center, and our waiter informed us they just opened in July. The restaurant layout is long and narrow. Tables are along the right wall all the way to the back of the restaurant. The cooking area and kitchen are along the left side. The chef's grill is placed in the open and diners can be seated along a bar facing it. The decor is simple, and gives the restaurant a crisp Japanese feel. The menu is limited, but offers selections of chicken, seafood, and steak. The wife ordered the Shrimp entree and I ordered the Eddie Special (steak and chicken). I also ordered a bowl of Miso soup. I thought the soup was very good. Each entree was preceded with an iceberg lettuce salad with ginger dressing. The entrees are served on a plate with rice (fried or white), and fresh vegetables. The meat is cooked in a lite teriyaki-like sauce that I found very tasty. We enjoyed our experience very much and would recommend dining here. I hope the restaurant will succeed because it offers a unique Japanese dining option. Quality "chop 'em up" food without the wait, show, and expense. It was very busy at lunch time and there were only three workers. They will need to hire more help to provide prompt service. read more

Quick turnaround on food, family owned, and the entree servings are large. I always have enough for a next day meal. I always order the chicken teriyaki entree and take it to go. In addition to the chicken teriyaki, the entree comes with grilled vegetables (zucchini, onions, cabbage, and carrots) and fried rice. Wanted to get away from the mall and found this on Yelp. Sign outside building said "best southern sweet tea around". It's good. As long as you like your sweet tea SWEET!!! We tried The Chicken Teriyaki bowls and Fast Eddie dinner (chicken and spicy steak) with fried rice. Both were very good and even better with the "white sauce" that was on the table (horseradish bases sauce). Compared very favorably with Otanis which we normally eat at. However this was much less expensive and a very good deal. It is buried in a shopping plaza so it's unlikely you will stumble across it unless you are specifically looking for it. If you are looking for stellar Japanese fare, you are better off looking elsewhere. But, frankly, if that's what you're seeking, you are better off looking "not in Birmingham." That said, this review is basically neutral. I don't have anything to say that will stop me from going back, but I didn't leave raving about it either. I stopped in for lunch after a former colleague had spoken highly of Shonos. It's close to home and work, so I wasn't out much to give it a shot. Imagine a hibachi restaurant where the entire restaurant is served by a single grill along one side of the restaurant and largely hidden from view. Think hibachi dinner without the show. Perfect for a quick office lunch. They also had a 99 Health Dept rating when I visited. As far as the food goes, it was a little bit hit and a little bit miss. The miso and the ginger salad were a great start. I considered the gyoza or egg roll, but those will have to come another day. The shrimp dinner had good sized portions. The shrimp were edible, the vegetables were actually pretty good, but the fried rice was very bland. Total price for their shrimp dinner, adding miso was under $12 (plus a tip). Which really is hard to beat. I'll go back for the price and convenience. I just wish the rice had a little more flavor. read more
