Umi is a great spot in an unassuming location! The inside is bright, nice and new with some cool artwork lining the walls. Its bright on the inside. We were greeted by the friendly staff and taken to our table quickly. While we were looking over the menu that had a large sushi selection, hibachi options, and poke we were given complimentary wonton chips to munch on. We ended up going with the summer special (order 2 sushi rolls, get one free!). The rolls came out fast on a platter. All were equally delicious. We got the Mini Godzilla, Crazy Friday, and the Amazing Roll. My favorite was the Mini Godzilla. The fish was fresh and each roll was unique. You could tase all the combinations in the roll without one thing being overpowering. It's an amazing value for what you get, and high quality. I am looking forward to frequenting here!

Great service and location. I may have just ordered the wrong items, but overall the food was pretty underwhelming. The gyoza, spicy tuna sushi, and hibachi were all just okay. The hibachi noodles had good flavor, but the steak and chicken were SO bland, and everything - including the veggies - was packed together in one container, which wasn't ideal. The clear soup was actually pretty solid though. I just moved from Miami, so I might be a tougher critic.... But realistically, I'd only come back for the clear soup and the free "Labubu" keychain haha.

Umi is a hidden gem in Hoover. Located in the trace crossings shopping center you'll find the perfect spot for a quick lunch or sushi date night. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I really liked the murals on the walls too as they were a unique addition you don't see at many restaurants in the area. The staff was helpful with the menu and gave us plenty of time to decide on what we wanted to order. Umi will usually have amazing deals going on (think buy 1 roll get 1 free!) so it's a great place for when you're super hungry. We ended ordering the amazing roll, crazy Friday roll, and the mini Godzilla. Each roll was fresh and every bite was full of flavor!

Best sushi spot in Birmingham that I've found so far. Ordered the Spicy 2 in 1, the Volcano roll, and the Crazy Friday roll. All rolls were fresh and beautifully crafted. I think my favorite was the Crazy Friday roll. Best of all - the summer special - buy two rolls (signature or chef) and get one free! That's three specialty rolls (not a basic roll with just salmon and cream cheese) for about $11/roll. I think you would be hard-pressed to find better quality and quantity for sushi in Birmingham. I look forward to returning to see what their poke bowls and hibachi are like. Bonus: free fried wanton chips for appetizer! You'd also be hard-pressed to find an Asian restaurant giving out free appetizers of any kind.

Always have a good experience eating here! Lots of selections on the menu and they will add or remove anything on the sushi roll that you ask for! The all you can eat is worth the money!!

This place opened recently and it's delicious! They gave us wonton crisps to start which I have always loved. I've never had them as an appetizer before, but more places should do this. They have a great lunch deals with combos where you can pick out 2-4 rolls of sushi or get a bento box. I'm a sushi lover so I got 3 different rolls to try. It was good but it didn't seem like they were wrapped right because they kept falling apart as I picked them up. The inside of the restaurant was spacious with lots of different booths and tables to pick from.

My poke bowl was delicious; I'd definitely order it again! My husband really enjoyed the hibachi. The portions were good sizes. Two meals, 2 drinks, no appetizers ran about $45, pre-tax. They were not stingy with the wasabi or the yum yum sauce. The facility is not a 'beauty queen' but it's clean and updated from the previous restaurant. They had lots of sushi options. Definitely worth a visit.

Solid sushi spot! Fish tastes fresh and they have a lot of specials. Ended up eating way more than I needed to but it was all tasty. Very clean and bright inside. Server was very nice as well. I think I just found my new go to spot.

This is a great little sushi restaurant. Service was excellent and food was fresh and delicious. I love a good tuna poky salad and this one did not disappoint. The tuna was fresh and rice was perfect. I also ordered a ginger saline that was perfect. They serve sweet wanton ships that I typically don't eat but these were decadently delicious.mThe decor is fresh and new. I will certainly return.

Happy child with the Cali roll and shrimp tempura roll.

First time eating here. The hubby wanted to give it a try and so glad we did. Delicious food and super friendly and attentive service. Our 9-y.o. really enjoyed his Cali roll and Shrimp Tempura roll and even tried a piece of our Sushi Village roll and Sushi Monster roll. He also tried miso soup for the first time and liked it. Both declared this to be their new favorite sushi place in town.

    So many sushi options!

Such amazing service and food! Affordable, delicious and great atmosphere- highly recommend.

It was our first time here, and we absolutely loved the crispies they gave us after being seated. The atmosphere was very nice--bright and spacious. They had a special (buy 2 rolls, get 1 free), so of course we had to partake. The Lion Roll ended up being our favorite. We were also recommended the steak fried rice--yum! The steak was thinly sliced, and we were worried it might not be good, but it did not disappoint. We would definitely come again.

We had an amazing meal here. The rolls are amazing and the side noodles are just insane!! The Special roll (I forget the name) will make you cry so good. Definitely recommend. We will be back.

I'm wondering if it was my fault for not ordering hibachi from the demonstration grill, but I was thinking since the restaurant was empty I was going it a service ordering from a table, but my soup and salad came out after my hibachi meal. I think the waiter forgot about it because I had to so if it was still coming. When it did come, the soup looked like mostly water (see photos) and the salad was over drenched in dressing. I've never seen that much dressing in a salad my entire life. The meat wasn't hot but the fried rice really saved the day. It was salty, but I prefer mine that way. I like the location of this place so I'm hoping that next visit will be different.

Where do I begin? I…read morehave lived in the Birmingham Metro area the majority of my life and love trying new places, so when my son spotted this place on a shopping trip to Publix and asked if we could go try it out I said yes (if he was a well-behaved boy at school lol). Luckily for us, he was today. It's location being over the parking deck is probably why I didn't notice it and I was nervous about how accessible it would be however there were two solid ways to get there either from the street or parking deck so that proved to be no issue at all. It has both indoor and outdoor seating with cute decor all over the inside. I've never been to Japan but one could imagine this gave its all to emulate the feel of a cool Japanese city restaurant. There's a cocktail bar on the right, sushi bar to the left, and good seating in the middle. Maybe large parties would be hard to seat upon reflection but I'm sure it's doable. The menus we received were EXTENSIVE. So many sushi and nigiri options were available it was almost overwhelming but they also gave us a paper selection for sushi that went into detail of the chef specials. But don't worry, they had other options including various soups, salads, appetizers (we got the spring rolls, YUM. My son devoured them), and hibachi style dishes. We decided to get the Udon with shrimp and veggies, Osaka roll, and Vestavia roll. Genuinely, you can taste the love and care. My son actually closed his eyes and sighed when he dived into the noodles dish and was enamored with the Vestavia roll (did I mention he's six?? Seriously, that reaction from a six year old means they're doing something right!). I also was beyond impressed with the flavors of it all. I wish I was more hungry so I could get more. Lastly, I want to touch on service. I, myself, am a bartender so service is a big thing for me. I have high expectations because I know how the job should be done. When I tell you these lovely people know how to make you feel at home, goodness. Every customer that came in was warmly greeted and if they were a regular it was like they were coming home. The lovely lady at the front (I want to say was maybe the manager?) was all smiles and running around helping and talking with staff and guests alike. She stopped by our table and chatted with my son and told us she was happy they had "new family members" (LOVE). Our server was phenomenal, even seeing my son was struggling with his chopsticks so he rigged up a pair to be more kid friendly which was great. We were sat facing the sushi bar so we were watching how much care and effort they were putting into each plate. It was a sight to see. This place clearly cares about its patrons from the moment they come in til the moment they leave. The love they put into every dish and interaction should be something you get everywhere. They've set a high bar and I'm happy we got to experience it. I cannot wait to go back. I'm already plotting what I'll try next!

The restaurant wasn't crowded at all, which made for a quiet and easygoing meal. The sushi itself was just okay... nothing particularly memorable, but it satisfied the craving. Service was smooth and timely, likely helped by the lighter crowd. Overall, a decent spot if you're looking for a low-key lunch without the wait, but the food didn't quite stand out compared to other sushi spots in the area
