This place is a weekly go-to for my family. The menu is large and diverse, with sushi, hibachi, poke, and all kinds of tasty appetizers. I've never had anything I didn't like there, and I'm not afraid to experiment because you absolutely cannot beat all-you-can eat sushi for $30. My favorite things on the menu are the dragon ball and the yellowtail jalapeno. The coconut shrimp are unique and also delicious. My youngest isn't much of a sushi eater yet, but even he has plenty of options-- he usually goes for hibachi-- the hibachi meat is solid; the rice and noodles, not so much. Their clear soup is the best I've had in the city-- very flavorful and quite a large bowl. The ambiance is nice, but the place is small, so it can get crowded. My son and I stopped in for lunch because we were craving sushi and had never visited before. The décor was lively, colorful, and welcoming. Unfortunately, our table was very unsteady and wobbled every time we rested an arm or hand on it. We probably should have asked to move, but we did let the staff know before leaving. Thomas was our server. He was very pleasant, though he seemed fairly new. I asked twice for lemon for my water but never received it. He did check on us after our meals arrived to make sure everything tasted good. The food was fresh and delicious! I ordered the Fire Crunch Roll and the Alaska Roll. Both were good, but the Fire Crunch was definitely my favorite. My son ordered the salmon hibachi and received a very generous portion. After we finished eating and requested a small takeout container, we sat talking for several more minutes. When Thomas didn't return with our check, we eventually walked to the counter to pay. He then said he could take care of it at the table, but we were already standing there and ready to leave. It made the ending feel a little awkward, and in the confusion, I accidentally left my container of sushi on the bar. Such a bummer! You enroll in it. The roll selection is massive, creative, and honestly impressive. Unique combinations, bold flavors, and everything tastes fresh. Like actually fresh. They do not skimp on the fish. No "where's the tuna?" scavenger hunts here. It's generous, balanced, and legit high quality. Now let's talk about the pace. Slow is not the word. Leisurely. Meditative. Spiritual. I'm convinced some of the fish is still being chased down in the river before it hits the plate. Fresh? Absolutely. Efficient? Not even a little. At one point I considered aging in place at my table. I had time to reflect on my life choices, my retirement plan, and whether I should order dessert now for next Tuesday. But here's the thing. I'm going back. Because when the rolls finally arrive, they deliver. Big flavors. Fresh ingredients. Creative combinations that make you immediately forgive them and place another round that will arrive sometime during the next fiscal quarter. Four stars. The food is top tier. Umi is a great spot in an unassuming location! The inside is bright, nice and new with some cool artwork lining the walls. Its bright on the inside. We were greeted by the friendly staff and taken to our table quickly. While we were looking over the menu that had a large sushi selection, hibachi options, and poke we were given complimentary wonton chips to munch on. We ended up going with the summer special (order 2 sushi rolls, get one free!). The rolls came out fast on a platter. All were equally delicious. We got the Mini Godzilla, Crazy Friday, and the Amazing Roll. My favorite was the Mini Godzilla. The fish was fresh and each roll was unique. Great service and location. I may have just ordered the wrong items, but overall the food was pretty underwhelming. The gyoza, spicy tuna sushi, and hibachi were all just okay. The hibachi noodles had good flavor, but the steak and chicken were SO bland, and everything - including the veggies - was packed together in one container, which wasn't ideal. The clear soup was actually pretty solid though. I just moved from Miami, so I might be a tougher critic.... But realistically, I'd only come back for the clear soup and the free "Labubu" keychain haha. read more

Umi is a hidden gem in Hoover. Located in the trace crossings shopping center you'll find the perfect spot for a quick lunch or sushi date night. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I really liked the murals on the walls too as they were a unique addition you don't see at many restaurants in the area. The staff was helpful with the menu and gave us plenty of time to decide on what we wanted to order. Umi will usually have amazing deals going on (think buy 1 roll get 1 free!) so it's a great place for when you're super hungry. I think my favorite was the Crazy Friday roll. Best of all - the summer special - buy two rolls (signature or chef) and get one free! That's three specialty rolls (not a basic roll with just salmon and cream cheese) for about $11/roll. I think you would be hard-pressed to find better quality and quantity for sushi in Birmingham. This place opened recently and it's delicious! They gave us wonton crisps to start which I have always loved. I've never had them as an appetizer before, but more places should do this. They have a great lunch deals with combos where you can pick out 2-4 rolls of sushi or get a bento box. I'm a sushi lover so I got 3 different rolls to try. It was good but it didn't seem like they were wrapped right because they kept falling apart as I picked them up. I've eaten in this restaurant once, but we usually pick up to go food. The owners are kind and concerned about making their restaurant a service-driven location in the community. I tried to order delivery from one of the delivery apps. The originally quoted time for the delivery went from reasonable to over an hour later. The store called to let me know what had happened, and because we live really close, the owner personally drove our food over as an apology for the delivery service messing up. This is a brand new restaurant. We've been there twice and both times the service was fantastic. My husband has had the hibachi shrimp and also the hibachi chicken. Both were flavorful and full of fresh vegetables. My friends and I had several different selections of sushi each time we've been there. The sushi is fresh and so delicious. We've tried some of the special rolls and some more traditional rolls. The decor is very nice...well-decorated without being over the top.
