I typically HATE shopping and I get overwhelmed in antique and thrift stores so it took me a few months of hearing about this store to finally make it in. Now it is my GO TO store for my own personal shopping, gifts and housewares. probably 70% of my clothes come from Penny Royalty. I can't find anything at Nordstrom that feels like it fits but I'll walk out of Penny Royalty with 5 new staples that feel like they were made for me. & that's not all! I have lamps, beautiful wine glasses, art, incredible jewelry, vintage copper trays, vases, hand poured candles in antique glass etc that adorn my home and make my house feel magical. Penny Royalty feels welcoming and kind of enchanting. It has changed my perspective on shopping and supporting local businesses because I always feel like I belong here. Nessa, the owner, is an amazing woman and she has an incredible eye and will help dress you and find the perfect pieces or gifts. Every time I'm in the shop there is a stream of people coming in and out just to see her and say "hi." I can't recommend this store enough. I've traveled around the world and been to a lot of cool places but I've never been into a store that is as curated as Penny Royalty. This store popped up and we decided to stop by. FYI there is a coffee/soda shop next door (another review for that place also done). This store was in a plaza, plenty of parking spots. At first entrance once inside, it looks tiny and the way things are set up, I was thinking that prices were going to be expensive. Don't be fooled, it may look small but there are a lot of great finds. This particular store is focused on women clothing, accessories and some home knick knacks. There is also another FashionPact that is HUGE and has kids and mens clothing, books, home goods, etc... But back to this location...everything is organized by sizes, they are inclusive and also have a plus section. FashionPact has a section by the front door that features items that they have posted on their social media accounts. If you fell in love with the item, you can come into the store and purchase or also they can ship the item to you. Check out their accounts to get details. At first, you think this is like all other thrift stores but two cool things that make their store stand out. They have dynamic pricing. You see the price of the item listed at the top of the tag, then if the item is not sold by the date listed, the price is reduced. If the item is still not sold, then the third price listed is the final purchase price. Such a simple concept, but it made me realize that their purpose is to sell merchandise and leave space available for new donations. Plus, in selling then money could be donated which brings me to the second cool thing about this store. As a buyer, you can pick which local organization gets a percentage of your total purchase. If you donate clothes, you also get to choose. Shopping and choosing where to donate makes you feel good. They have a screen at the top of the register that shows the local organizations, but if you want to know more about the groups, they have an iPad next to the register so you can read more about the groups. They have the organizations divided by categories such as, animals, arts, education, etc. There are so many choices and all groups are local! How awesome is this! If you are not too busy shopping, all throughout the store, you can spot the thank you cards/letters/drawings from these organizations for the donations. I went twice, back to back to this location and got so many good deals. Scratch that, steals. Good clothing and accessories for under $10, but most were under $5. My brag from this store was a Columbia pink fleece zip up jacket with tags for $5, wow!!!!!! The other items that I also purchased were used but in excellent condition or with tags. The sales associate was sorting through donations and when I came back the next day, there was a lot of new items in my size section. SOOOOOOO sad that there is not a store like this in the Bay Area. I did tell them they should open one up and they said that they have friends in SF that have told them the same thing. Sadly, rent would be a killer around here. Staff was so nice. I know this place is not touristy but for sure this is a dream store for any thrift store lover. I joked that I could come to Anchorage with an empty luggage and challenge my self to only use clothes bought from any of the FashionPact locations. If you live in the area, lucky you. It's a nice boutique and everything is sorted by garment type and size. There is a fitting room for patrons to try on outfits and good music to keep you in a good mood. Pricing is very fair and there's two prices listed on each tag. After a certain date the price cuts to half. On my visit my mom and I were able to snag a couple of half priced items and two full priced ones, which was still a steal. My coat was $10, blouse $5, and I think my mom got two wrap dresses, and a blazer with everything being under $50. Now if that doesn't make you feel great the proceeds go towards a charity in Alaska and you can pick which one your purchases goes towards. We chose the zoo and hope everyone will go support this little shop when visiting Anchorage.

Once again, summertime is here and that means garage sales citywide for anyone looking for bargains at a fraction of the cost by regular retailers or treasure-hunting for a rare, hard-to-find item just sitting in someone's attic or storage room. I look forward to these events every weekend just to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and of course, the thrill of the hunt for that rare vinyl record hidden in a stack of milk crates or cardboard boxes. I find that the shopping experience is a lot more laid-back when meeting the people holding the garage sales despite the fact that you may not find what you need or want from time to time. Some are decent families who go out of their way to welcome visitors by having their kids make fresh lemonade or homemade cookies for only 25 cents making it that much more enjoyable personally. As far as items go, anything can be found that could be worth more than what the asking price is. Clothing, furniture, antiques, household goods, electronics, books, tools, sporting goods, and DVDs among others are some good finds that are still like new or never been used. When shopping for vinyl records, I save as much as $10 or $20 on a stack that can also be negotiable for a lower price as the weekend draws to a close. Certain garage sales will do this on every single item for as much as 50 to 75% off after 2PM on Sundays. In certain cases, you may be lucky to get that item for free rather than the sellers wanting to put it back in storage. Some good resources to find a garage sale close to you or one that carries a particular item you're looking for are the classifieds on the Anchorage Daily News's website, Craiglist, or Marketplace on Facebook. This is one of the more enjoyable weekend activities you can take advantage of outside instead of going to the mall or watching a movie in the theater during the middle of the day.

Rethink Home is a family-owned business located on W. Fireweed across from the VFW Post between Arctic and Spenard. The display floor is filled with an interesting mix of antique furniture, novelty items like 80's icon shirt button pins (Pac-Man, Mr. T, Galaga, Max Headroom, He-Man, and Q-Bert among others), a large detailed oil-style painting of Audrey Hepburn from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's displayed on the rear wall in the back room, Alaskan memorabilia, and crafts from local artists. Like all of my other reviews on antique stores, my main focus is the vinyl they have in wooden crates set up by the front register. The collection here is relatively small and like the secondhand thrift stores, they will arrive randomly without notice. There was an array of albums from the 40's and 50's up to the more modern artists from the 70's and 80's. I saw a few that caught my attention but unfortunately had to pass on because of the condition of some of the records. Some jazz albums I considered buying had visible surface scratches and split seams on either the top or bottom of the album covers. At $5 to $8 on some of these, these were priced relatively high by their condition alone. However, they did have a separate crate of records that were marked down to $2 or 50% from their original selling price, but again the condition was a concern. The nearby secondhand thrift stores had vinyl in better shape at only $1 apiece or .60 at the lowest with minimal surface scratches or fully intact album covers with the original inner sleeve available. However, the people running this store are very friendly and this place is a good option for anyone looking to purchase some paintings or a detailed wood-carved piece of vintage furniture.

I had been here years ago. It's basically a non profit thrift store with a twist as they have a workshop in the back that they make items and repurpose hence the name re:Made. Hollea, when I arrived showed me more minerals she had received from a donated estate and I took pics to show Judy and we researched and through texts we negotiated and I came back next day to purchase several more. They have glassware, paintings, posters, jewelry, books, lots of thrifty items. Everyone that works there is a volunteer and everyone is very friendly. Check them out.
