Played a round of golf today. Hadn't played here in years and probably won't play here again. The staff were fine but many places around the coarse is Swiss cheese; not sure of the rodent species but gopher like holes EVERYWHERE as well as them. I was surprised we didn't run one over accidentally. Balls that shouldn't have disappeared did, and the holes made for a bumpy ride on the cart. The mosquitos became a problem as we got closer to the recreational sailing lake on the front and were terrible on the back nine. Bitten over 20 times. Otherwise, a well marked coarse with decent tees and nice challenging greens. Not worth being bitten by mosquitos though. read more

Just a note to talk about the round I played at Shoreline on Wednesday August 12th. I have never seen the course in such terrible shape and I had to apologize to my threesome for making the booking. Dirt lies in fairways, balls disappearing in plain site, ankle breaking squirrel holes everywhere, Canadian geese feces everywhere to the extent that I had to throw my towel away!!! I walked for $ 42 but my playing partners had to pay $57 to play an absolutely disgraceful course. Coyote Creek, a real golf course costs less than that!!! Cosmetically, the greens were the only reasonable feature of the course, but even they were painfully slow. I will not be back there until I see some reasonable reviews. read more

I have over 50 bites on me and I was killing them as fast as I could . And watch out for the gangs that run each hole ( squirrels ). They literally climb all over your bag digging for food . Had a bad day at the course ! Not my game but at the Pro Shop. My reservations from GolfNow got screwed up and I lost my best and range finder at the course ! Shoreline found my range finder and kept it in Lost and Found then straightened out my tee time woes. GM and his staff were all accommodating . Thanks ! read more

Breaks my heart to give Shoreline only 1 star, but the cold hard facts are inescapable. First, reasons why it deserves a BETTER rating: * Course design: Particularly the back 9, but the entire course offers a diversity of holes, water that comes into real play, plenty of strategic sand, doglegs left and right, subtle elevation changes, flow designed to take into account the often strong prevailing afternoon wind - a thinking person's course. In terms of design it beats probably every muni on the Peninsula, and was designed for walking. * Service: Front desk and starter were smiling, prompt, effective. * Price: $54 for walking midday on a Sunday, not crazy at all for these parts. * Driving range, practice areas, bar/food: They have them, leave it at that. Now for the bad news: * Course conditions: Tees and particularly fairways decimated - maybe it is the lost battle to all the goose turd, or poor drainage, or too much play, or all of the above, but just a disgusting mess. I am air-drying my trolley and golf shoes for a few days before I dare knock off the accumulation. Greens were not the worst I have seen, but an "average" rating might be generous. Sand traps lacked sand, bring your mud wedge. * Pace of play: 12 holes in 3:45, projects to a 5 hour 37 minute round. Couldn't take it, walked off. Rangers fly around on carts and do nothing, maybe they feel powerless. We watched in despair as one woman took 4 shots to try to clear a pond - with full warm-up sequence each time. Her 4some kept tossing her balls. We watched another 4some park their carts about 30 yards from the tee box, and then tee off one at a time, each walking to the tee box, then back to the cart... THEN the next one starting walking to the tee box. Waited on all but one non-putting/chipping shots. * Range: No grass option, maybe there is for the pros, but not for us regulars. The little fake grass mats have been beaten down to the end of their lives. Practice on those and you are fooling yourself. * Goose chasers: People on carts driving breakneck around the course with long, streaming, multicolored flags scaring the geese. This causes geese to fly through you, over you, even under you, often in the middle of your swing. This "service" (a) only moves the geese, the geese don't leave (b) disturbs play - whomever are driving these carts are not golfers. Northern courses battle with Canadian Geese. Only effective method is hiring flushing dogs (plural!) trained for the purpose - set 'em out on a course for few weeks and the geese eventually get tired of constant harassment and move on. And keep bringing the dogs back. The geese problem cannot be eliminated, but it can be controlled. The geese have won at Shoreline. Huge flocks of baby geese roam some fairways - cute? NO! Summary: What good is decent service, excellent design and a fair price if you can't enjoy your round and finish it in a reasonable amount of time. It is sad that this place, once such a wonderful muni, has fallen so far. And the well-meaning help seem clueless on how to deal with poor conditions and the slow pace. I hate to say it, but no mas. Would rather drive twice the distance and pay twice the price to play Cinnabar. read more

Great course for a mixed foursome of high and low handicappers. The forward tees are easy while the tips can get ugly. (The 10th and 12th being great examples.) Play early in the morning or be prepared to play in monsoon-like winds. The early-bird Back 9 special is a great way to start your day. Oh, there is goose poop everywhere. Fantastic food and beer in a very nice, modern club house setting. The pro shop is completely new and has a great selection for those people crazy enough to make major purchases at a golf course. Green fees are quite reasonable. Watch out for goose poop. They have great practice facilities including a grass/mat lit driving range, multiple putting greens, a pitching green and even a practice bunker. A great place to spend the day practicing with a rented sleeve of balls from the range attendant. BEWARE the course pro wearing the straw hat. He's a complete jerk. It probably has to do with all the goose poop on the course. Did I mention that there is a lot of goose poop? There is...a lot. read more

This is a pretty fun course when the conditions are good. Play in the mornings for an interesting layout and in the afternoon for more of a challenge with the wind kicking up significantly. The greens are nice and firm though the sand in the bunkers vary in quality, which can be quite frustrating. Try not to play on the weekends or late afternoon as you will get a 5 hour+ pace of play. When I first played here in May 2014, I had a great time so I continued till last Friday. As of Aug 8, 2014, the geese and squirrels have won. It's really over. There are tee boxes with massive squirrel burrows. Even bunkers have squirrel burrows. There is goose poop everywhere on the fairway. There is a fellow riding around in a cart with a makeshift lance like a ridiculous suburban Don Quixote, fighting the geese. It's all a bit too much so I am going to decamp to other courses till Shoreline gets its shit together. read more

I enjoyed Shoreline quite a bit. Outside of the goose turds everywhere, it's in good shape. There is a lot of water on the course, adding to the challenge - but most challenging feature there is the wind from the bay. Man, it can straight up blow out there. In fact, I'm certain that the course rating and slope is high because they take that into account... so play there when it's calm, and you'll kick its ass. I'll call Shoreline arguably the best of the economical "muni" courses in the area. read more

I took two sessions of golf lessons here with Roy Day & Joe DeBode this past spring. Roy & Joe are both excellent instructors. I had never golfed before in my life and that included minimal miniature golfing as well. I am proud to say that I am a pretty good beginning golfer. Shoreline golf has three nice practice areas for putting & chipping and a nice driving range. 18 hole course, cart rentals, pro shop, and course restaurant. Shoreline golfers are not very friendly or patient with beginning golfers. Come on people, how quickly you forget when you were a beginner. Actually the two times that I played there outside of lessons I experienced some very rude unfriendly impatient golfers. Aside from that watch out for all the geese poop. I've only been to the driving range. The course is in a nice and convenient location, just off of the 101. The course is beautiful with a lot of water features. However, the water attracts fowl of all types, whose collective poop can create an unpleasant stench. It's one of those smells that you have to think about a little before realizing what is causing it. The driving range itself is OK. The stalls are in good condition and the balls are relatively cheap. A medium bucket (55 balls) costs $6 and a large bucket (90 balls) costs $9. The hitting area is pretty run down. There is hardly any grass out there and there aren't any distance markers. Plus, there always seems to be a strong wind blowing at you. (Maybe that explains my slice -- or not...) read more

Played on Sunday April 28, 2013 First time playing here. Like previous reviews - the course conditions are what drags Shoreline down. I was expecting windy conditions and goose poop everywhere. But not so. The wind picked up in the afternoon but that was it and despite the geese being all over the place, I didn't think the droppings overwhelmed the course. My golf ball(s) made it through the round without being contaminated by the poop. The fairways do have a lot of dead spots. Greens I thought were decent. A tiny it bumpy on some. The sand on the bunkers not rock hard but somewhat packed. As for the course design itself - not muni like at all in IMHO. It definitely makes you think twice before hitting your shots. Somewhat challenging, especially if you've never played here and not familiar with the layout. There were some holes where I couldn't tell where I needed to hit my drive, etc. There are a couple of Par 3's that look identical - so much so that I had to do a double take on my scorecard to see if I was on the right hole. I was lucky and didn't experience any waiting at all. It didn't see too crowded during my round. The pro shop and restaurant are top notch. Would I play here again? Probably. read more

The course is as ordinary as it gets though for newbies, this could be an attraction. You can mishit your tee shot pretty badly and still find your ball and possibly recover. The greens might be the worst I've ever played. I've been on courses where the fairways were maintained and ran more true than these greens. For me, there is nothing worse than playing a couple good shots from tee to approach only to find that hitting or reading a true putt is not possible. You'll also come across geese/bird/fowl feces all over the grounds. Kind of annoying and not keeping to the rules of the game when you're forced to constantly pick and clean up your ball. Several times while my ball did not come to rest on bird crap, the follow through and my divot caused some crap particles to spray back into me. Annoying... I suppose it could be a good place to practice if there are some good deals for families to promote the sport in general and if your kids are young enough where condition of the greens would not change their attitude to the game. Probably wouldn't ever visit this course again if i was interested in competitve golf. read more

Came here for the first time a few months ago to play a round of golf for a friends bday and boy was it windy. I know they can't control the wind but the location of the course is really windy. Im no pro but when I get a good swing and its carried 50 yards away from where I intended it to go just sucks. I would definitely check the weather next time. As for the course itself, I think they were doing maintenance as there were a couple of holes that played closer than we would normally play. The greens were kept. The cart girl wasn't around much, I would say once throughout our round. The ladies at the restaurant and deli were super nice and even teased my buddy for getting older for his bday. I would try this place out again when it's not windy. read more

First off, this course is one of the very first courses I played since moving to bay area 5 years ago. The course condition is overall acceptable considering the price. I buy membership every year, this course has been my regular for quite a while. But, today I had horrible experience from the staff, I thought I had to write it down here to warn fellow golfers. I wasn't able to book a tee time online so just walked in today and asked to be put on wait list. In the past the staff members have been flexible and were able to squeeze me in a group after a short wait, most of courses can accommodate single drop-ins fairly easily. I was the only one on wait list then. I waited a while and saw a 3 some teed off, then I ask the guy (oldest dude in staff) why he didn't add me in the group, he said he didn't know the 4th player didn't show (what's your job?). I said ok I know you're busy, can I just pay and wait at 1st tee so I can join if there's a spot (I did that many times before). He refused, he said he'll call me. Then I waited, again I saw a 2-some teed off, I went in but received burst of anger from that old dude, he said I don't need you tell me how to do my job, these are paid players I can't give their spot to you... (so you let 3-some and 2-some play... what's the logic?) I gave up arguing as there're people behind me waiting to check in, I didn't want to play in this course anymore. If there is any chance the course's management looks at this forum, I'd suggest them to run the business with staff that understand business basics, if they don't, educate them. I run service business myself, I tried everything I can, to not say no to my customers, at minimum I don't turn customers away with anger, I make sure my door is open for them to come back anytime. I know what 'customer first' means to my business. Your business WON'T SUSTAIN with staff that doesn't care customers. That is why Amazon uses it as No1 leadership principle and made sure everyone in company really follows it. The upkeep of this course is pretty bad. Fairways need a lot of work. I like the layout, but it is just sad how the course is not being kept up. The green speed is good, but often there are bad spots on the greens and fairways. On the positive, the practice greens and such allow for great practice. There is also a good driving range. If you walk, expect a good workout. On the back 9, there is a hike between 12 and 13. Staff always seems friendly and pace of play is usually pretty fair. Lastly, if the city could do such a thing, they should use dogs or such to control the geese. Whatever method they try to employ, does not work. I have heard that dogs can be trained to do this. read more

There must be something wrong going on here. There I stood on the 18th tee box with only 73 strokes already accounted for. What? how is this possible? You mean if I birdie, par, bogey, or even double bogey I can Break 80 for first time ever??!! What!! So of course pushed my drive OB right, only OB by about 6 inches....son of a #$@&!! Now I am on the green lying 4 just need a 2 putt and get out of here with a 79....of course my first 3 putt of the day AARRRGGHHH!!!!! Anyway, what is even more incredible was the fact that there was not one piece of goose s@#t on the greens! I know, can you believe it? I once swore I would never play here again because it was so bad, but last weekend it was in great shape and the beverage cart was circling, the wind was non-existent, it was a little slice of heaven.. When you play from the blues, 6600 yards, and the wind is blowing, you are in for a tough round. On a Sunday it was $54 for walking. There are no signature holes but it's a pleasant and walkable golf course. My bitch with this place is they do no work on the sand traps. If you are going to have a links golf course with lots of sand, make the traps good. They seem to have an anti-maintenance program as they are dirt traps. Step yo' game up Shoreline! It's a fine muni. Nor worth a special drive to but if your are on the peninsula I would check it out. read more

Review based on playing @ Shoreline on 1/21/13 - Overall course was in VERY bad shape. Fairways were thin, and in some spots (50-70+ yards) were staked off as ground under repair. - Greens were in great shape. Rolled very true, and in my opinion are what saved the round for our group. - Used to playing other similar Bay Area courses (Oakland Metro, Harding Park, Poplar Creek), are in much better playing shape compared to Shoreline. - Warm up facilities are great: Range, putting/chipping green. read more

It had been a few years since I last played shoreline. I knew there was goose droppings but it has gotten out of control. I walked and carried. I literally could not put my bag down without getting fresh goose droppings on the bottom. My Adidas tour shoes were disgusting afterwards. The course used to be interesting but one cannot appreciate int when you are dodging goose bombs all day. I would have given one star but the pro shop was very kind in spirit. read more

Finished the work stuff I needed to get done and shockingly (snicker), had my clubs in the car. If you're interested, take a look at my other course reviews. I'm working towards playing every course in the Bay Area (and beyond) and giving an honest review based on bang for the buck. I like to play golf... a lot. I need deals to finance the obsession =). Shoreline was cool. I got paired up with a great group of really good golfers. Apparently, Shoreline has a deal that for around $120/month, it's all the mid-week afternoon golf you can play. I didn't get all of the specifics, but even in that range is a sick deal. There was some confusion coming into the place. New pipeline construction has their main entrance all blocked off, so I had to zig and zag a few times. No worries. Got to the clubhouse, walked on as a single, the guy gave me a deal on the rate ($25 at about noon?) and says they're starting on 10 today. Things got a little screwy. They hadn't been starting people on 10 that morning so there were 3 or 4 groups on the tee box - some that were waiting to start and some that were making the turn. There was no starter, and everyone thought they were up next. I didn't expect them to have a starter on a Wednesday afternoon, but a little more organization in the scheduling would've been solid. We worked it out. Game on. The course itself was fun, but nothing amazing. You could tell that the soil composition (high salt content?), being so close to the bay, was making it hard to grow grass in some areas. The bunkers were inconsistent sand-wise, but consistent with most of the courses in the bay area at this price-point. The greens were in better than average shape, which on a course like this, is really all that matters. You didn't show up here expecting manicured fairways. Give me a readable putt and a line that mostly holds and I can deal with a little roughness around the edges. One of the things that irked me about the layout was the par-3's. I played the blue tees and if I recall correctly, every par-3 was 160+/- to the pin. I was adjusting between a 6 and a 7 iron based on wind, but beyond that, it was the same shot every time. On the flip side, the par-5's varied... a few out of reach and a few that with good contact could be gotten to in 2. Long story short, I'm not going to go out of my way to make it back any time soon, but it was a fun course that I'd definitely play again if I'm in the area and the price is right. read more

I am by no means a golfer. I don't own a set up clubs, I don't sport the geeky shoes, or even have a fancy pantsy visor with a golf companies name scribbled across the front. Still, seeing as my Mom has found a new love for the sport, it's nice to meet up with her and whale some balls at the driving range. Wendy and I cruised by to meet her at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. There were plenty of spaces open on the range, and we were able to find 3 spots next to each other. The balls are decently priced, the range is properly marked and giving my mom a high five when she rockets one off is priceless. I'm gonna keep going back here because it's all I know, and the range is closest to her work.... even though my back feels like it's twisted like a pretzel the next day. Oh, almost forgot they have a chinese chicken salad in the clubhouse that's pretty awesome, and the pastrami sandwich isn't half bad either. read more

Wow Yelpers! Where's the love? I was unexpectedly surprised at how much I liked this course after reading all the negative reviews & am glad I decided to play yesterday. The setting of this course is great IMO! You're out near the Google & LinkedIn campuses, with mountain views to the east & west. Shoreline Lake was busy with sail boats, windsurfers, paddle boarders & music playing. The Rengstorff House, an 1867 Victorian is adjacent to one of the tee boxes on the back nine; there are tent top views of Shoreline Amphitheatre from several holes. Michael's restaurant is next to the pro shop. They have a large breakfast & lunch menu with indoor/outdoor seating which overlooks a nice pond with fountain & the golf course. Golf course restaurants in general aren't known for great food or ambiance. The restaurant was busy with both locals & golfers; the food was pretty good & the selection is bigger than what you'd normally get with typical muni course restaurants. The Pro Shop staff were nice & they have a great selection of golf push carts & bags for sale. The buildings appear to be newer & blend in nicely with the setting. Now on to the course itself. Yes there are areas that had small areas under water/soggy or were under repair but you just play over or around these obstacles or move your ball if you land in a wet spot. Tee boxes were decent & the greens rolled well, not bumpy like some are at Poplar. In spite of the drought, the course looked really good; there were some brown areas or areas on the fairway that had more dirt then grass but it didn't detract from the game. This course has some fun par 3's & hazards to work around. Yes, there are a lot of ground squirrels & holes but play focused, watch your ball & it shouldn't really be a big issue. I only lost one ball & assume it went down a hole. Yes, there are goose droppings; to be expected when you are surrounded by bodies of water. I didn't feel like that it was overly inconvenient & most of the putting greens are probably cleared of droppings every morning since droppings on the greens weren't really an issue. Pace of play was decent for the front 9 which took 2 hours; it did slow down on the back 9 taking 2.5 hours. On weekends, it's rare for a round to take less then 5 hours so I was happy on a holiday weekend with a 4.5 hour round. Restrooms on the course are well placed, clean & had running water, always a plus! It's so annoying to have to use outhouses especially at a pricier course like Harding. There are also several water fountains around the course dispensing chilled water which I've never seen on a course before. I always bring water so fountains aren't necessarily an essential but nice for wetting down towels. We play Palo Alto Muni a fair amount but Shoreline is definitely better all around. This is my new favorite go to course! read more

Pros: Decent rates, well-kept course, nice setting. I really want to like this golf course. Cons: We went on a Saturday afternoon and no one on the course was keeping pace. When we pulled up the 4th tee, there was a group finishing and then 3 more ahead of us waiting to tee off. It took us an hour and a half to get through 4 holes, at which point we decided to cut our losses and return to the clubhouse. I know everyone isn't a scratch golfer (I'm definitely not!), but that's unacceptable. Not sure if they booked too many groups or what, but it definitely wasn't how I wanted to spend my afternoon. Luckily they were nice enough to refund our green fees. I would consider coming back at a less busy time to actually enjoy my round of golf. read more

This course is similar to Palo Alto Muni, except it has an added feature, goose waste. The layout is average in my opinion. For the green fee, I would expect more, better conditions on the fairways and smoother greens. Maybe the Silicon Valley aura is overflowing on this course, it's on the expensive side compared to other Muni courses in the area. The practice chipping area and putting green is sized to accomodate quite a few golfers. You can practice a variety of shots there. The course is located close to the bay, so expect windy conditions. If you don't mind playing in a minefield of goose waste, you may give this place a try. read more

They have a shoreline Golf links APP thats for iOS and Android- it uses your GPS to find where on the course you are and how far to the hole! Pretty cool! It's an Ok spot, with a few challenging holes. One thing I will mention is that the courses are either flooded or too dry! So there are some landscaping issue here. A real cheap thrill, but not picturesque. Great to come for amateurs looking for a challenge, without the expense of a challenge. I will come again, but if I am golfing to impress a client, i may go elsewhere. PS- the restaurant at the course is great! So check that out some read more

This was my first time coming here and I was blown away by how pretty it was for an average golf course. It was good enough for me, especially since I haven't played in the past 5 years...I didn't do as bad as I thought I would but I guess I should have gone to the driving range first to warm up :). The first 9 holes was nice but the back 9 holes seems pretty run down. Beware of all the geese crap all over the course but no worries, they have an area by the golf cart returns where you can use an air hose to blow away all the crap off your golf shoes afterwards. The fees are $54 but twilight fees are $28. I'm not sure how much the golf carts cost but since my friend is a Mountain View resident, we got a discount on the fees and golf cart. And it wasn't that bad. I'd definitely be back now that I've got the golf bug in my system! :) read more

The Good: Affordable membership options. They are Improving the conditions of the putting greens and grounds as much as possible. Layout of the course is entertaining along with the often challenging winds. Has a large driving range. Staff nice and helpful. My favourite golf instructor The Bad: Slow pace of play allowed. Other golf courses have "Player Assistants" that help move the pace-of-play which should be 4.0 hours to complete. If you are there for a "social" or "junior" tournament, it often take 5 hours or more. That amount of time is boring, frustrating if not irritating. My foursome can complete the course in 3.5 hours. The Ugly: Canadian Honker Goose Poop...... it is not as bad as before but more to come because the new generation gosslings are waddling around. Ground squirrels occupy at least four areas of the golf course. They are getting tame, learning how to "beg" along with stealing food from your cart or chewing through your golf bag. They make some holes in the ground that can twist or break you ankle if stepped into. It is built on top of a "dump" so the land is toxic and is sinking. Legend has it that the grass could catch fire from the methane gas evaporing from the waste below. read more

One of the very few places in the bay area where you can hit off grass at the range. That alone makes me give it five stars. Not sure what their "grass" schedule is, but I went on a saturday afternoon, and was hitting off grass. Can't speak for the course though, as I haven't played it. read more

I haven't played golf in a while, but this place was close to work and I was strongarmed by some coworkers into playing. The course itself has lots of geese and hence geese poop. Besides that, it's maintained OK, nothing spectacular but you can do worse. The variety of holes was pretty good as well, lots of long holes, doglegs, and water. We played at twilight, 4:30pm, on a Tuesday. Wasn't busy, which is good. I hate playing in front of pushy, snobby golfers who always ask to play through, and there weren't any here. Not sure how it is on weekends or during the day. The driving range? Meh. They didn't have plastic tees at all for the mats! This is the first driving range I've been to where you had to supply your own plastic tee. Ghetto. I did shoot my first par ever here, so I guess I'll always have a fond memory of this place. read more

Closest golf course and driving range to where I live, so it's a regular on my list. The driving range is great because it has tons of mats so theres never a wait. Pretty big compared to most driving ranges I think and that seems to help my shot. Only problem is the wind here. And the smell. The actual golf course isn't the best maintained one I've seen, but it passes. I like how large the course feels and that they have golf carts =D If I was taking someone to impress to golf, this wouldn't be in my top choice... Props for location and restaurant and shop and size of the place, but downsides definately are wind, smell, and care of the grass. read more

I was eaten alive by the mosquitoes yesterday, 8/17/2019. The mosquitoes are humongous and left my legs with large, scarred red blotches everywhere.
