This theater is a gem and I'm not sure if people realize what they offer here. I recently saw the play "Nine" I won't give it away but it was top notch performances. I am Deaf so two interpreters were available and they did an outstanding job. The play was 2 hours long with a15 minute intermission. Next door but connected to the theatre is Ethel's. They sell drinks with a few candy snacks. We had a great time and would recommend coming to the shows. We already have plans on returning read more

I have been coming to the Short North Stage for years now. My friends and I always come here every Halloween to see Rocky Horror Picture Show! It is a very nice and very professional local theater that everyone should support! They have a nice stage and great seating as well as a nice bar and snacks. The drinks are always goods and the snacks are things like bags or chips and popcorn but I always get a cocktail and popcorn when I go. They always have productions going and if you are looking for something new to do in town and you have never been here before. Come see a show and support the local arts in town! read more

My granddaughter & I went to see the "Wiz" and loved this theater! We still love the theater but we are totally disappointed in "Miss Saigon" which we went to the opening show tonight. I saw this play over 20 years ago. Let me tell you it was not a burlesque show! Tonight this show was a "Burlesque show. We did not make it 10 minutes before leaving. I truly felt they should have advertised it properly. In the folder for the play in small print they advertised sexual & violent nature. They did not advertise the string bikini's! Leaving nothing to the imagination. I was truly disappointed! The low rating is for this reason alone. Oh by the way it's rated PG13. I wouldn't take a child 13 to this show! read more

We came to see HAIR. Man, the 18 kids in The Tribe worked their collective butts off. Loved the look of the stage and that the cast roamed around the theatre. Super enjoyable. The bathroom situation is untenable. Small bathrooms and many users. They had to hold the restart after intermission because the lines are so long. Beware. read more

First time but not the last time! Stop in to see Ain't Misbehaving- really enjoyed the cast/band/singers. Encouraged Audience participation at the appropriate times. The theater is very intimate holds about 300 people, seats comfortable, there places to buy light snacks but there are also restaurants nearby to grab a meal before show. Bathrooms are clean. It's worth a visit. read more

Small and intimate, but a decent selection of shows to pick from. The stage is high, but I'm sure that's due to limited storage and production space, since this is right in the heart of Columbus. Of the few times I've been here, the sound system can sometimes be a hindrance to get into the groove of their productions. The women's restroom only has three stalls, so the line can be very long at intermission, so be aware. The side bar is a cute space with a few small tables and nice bar. They allow patrons to bring their take-out food here to eat before their shows, as long as you get a drink. Oh, and the last few times here, there's been a guy at the bar selling snacks and sweets, a great way to satiate your sweet tooth during the show. read more

We saw a great production of the musical 'Hair' this afternoon at the Garden Theater aka "Short North Stage " productions. The actors and actresses were outstanding! They all put their heart and soul in recreating this play. They only rehearsed for three and a half weeks and did a production like it was second nature in knowing all the songs and acting! The theatre was perfect and intimate for this recreation! This was our first time here and looking forward to going back for other plays! read more

All of the productions I've seen here (at the Garden Theatre) have been 5 star performances. Parking is rough, though. There's a small lot with meters close to the venue, but one of the times I tried to use it, there was a special even going on, so you had to pay a flat fee of $20 to park there, instead of just a couple of bucks. Needless to say, I skipped the lot and parked on a side street. Needless to say, I ended up with a parking ticket. I couldn't figure out which of the parking rules to follow since there was a multitude of signs posted. I took a chance and lost. Oh well. Other than the crappy parking situation, this is a delightful theatre. I particularly enjoy visiting the attached bar, as they usually have themed drinks, based on the show. For Rocky Horror, they served a Sweet Transvestite and it was colorful and fruity and wonderful. The Green Room is a small theatre space for the more intimate shows. The larger main hall has a traditional stage/seating area. Ticketing is online and easy. While outside during intermission, I appreciated one of the staff poking her head out and telling us the show was about to start. I would attend more shows here if I didn't hate the parking situation so much. read more

Hooray for something DIFFERENT in the Short North! I won't repeat everything Catherine J said, but her review is spot-on. The grittier, north end of the Short North is really becoming one of my favorite places in the city. Short North Stage (at the Garden Theater) is old and beautiful, and just like the neighborhood, a little gritty. And that's just how I like it. The theatre is a work in progress, but it's got loads and loads of charm and character. Everyone there is super friendly, and the plays are edgy and more adult. So, if you're looking for someplace to take the kiddos, you might want to pass up the Short North Stage. And when you're done watching a show, you should totally head over to Brothers Drake to get your drink on. read more

Six of us attended the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Green Room on the Thursday before Halloween. While the dialog, singing and acting were five-star worthy, the production quality was crap. We were seated in D1 through D6. I was in D1, which is shown on the theater layout as in front of the right stage curtain, it was in-fact behind the curtain, blocking about 25% of my view of the performance (we paid the same price for our tickets as those with great seats)... so I subtracted a star. The sound system was about as good as my view. The wireless microphones on the actors kept cutting out as they spoke. The actors tried to compensate by projecting, but the cutting in and out of the sound made the dialog almost incomprehensible... so I subtracted a second star. Finally, and this is my opinion, the Green Room was not an appropriate venue for this production. The room is like an over-crowded strip club runway. It seemed the production was choregraphed to stage front and stage left, making it impossible for us to see a lot of the play from our seats in the D row. As a result, much of the lighting was directly in our eyes, and thus subtracting one more star. If this production were to have been on the main stage, not only would this non-profit be able to accommodate more sales, but the better production equipment and lighting would have made this the best experience ever. Instead, the technology and overcrowded seating layout ruined our night. While I recommend the Short North Stage and commend their hard work to bring quality performance to Central Ohio, I suggest steering clear of any production in the Green Room until it is renovated into a conventional theater. read more

I probably would not have gone to a show at this theatre for a long time except I had a friend in town who spotted an ad for a ballet about zombies and got excited, so we went. It was a good experience: not an expensive show; the theatre has a fascinating interior--I love how unfinished it looks; they let us bring coffee in to the show. The ballet was pretty good: it definitely has a home-grown feel, but I like that. In fact, some of the music was composed and performed by local bands--brilliant! I'm not sure this place has quite figured itself out yet, but it is a fantastic addition to the Short North, and I hope that they continue to experiment with different kinds of shows and events and ways to get people in here. read more

I very much enjoyed my experience with the Short North Stage at the Garden Theater this past weekend. Although the space is still under renovation, I actually liked the charm of the unfinished space-- the open rafters, exposed brick, and a few rough edges enhanced the production of Cabaret, in my view. It had that old-building smell-- you definitely felt part of Columbus history while inside! I hope that feeling isn't lost with the completed renovation. Oh, and the location! Tons of options for pre-show dinner or post-show drinks. I echo Michael G (the first to review): it's a great addition to the Short North. I love having more options for entertainment in the ShoNo beyond daytime boutiquing and late-night drankin'. This space and company is everything you like about community theater, with none of the drawbacks. A professional acting company with huge talent, make no mistake. But, you get a more intimate, accessible show with a level of tender care by the attending staff you just won't get at any of the bigger spaces in town. There's a small bar inside serving beer, wine, and a couple of themed cocktails to go with the show. I also noticed a mingling cafe space on my way to the ladies' room-- perhaps a venue for some smaller performances, or just pre-show socializing? Seats were comfy. I will look into getting a subscription for upcoming shows! BTW- up to $30 of your ticket value can be put towards your membership subscription on the evening of the performance. read more

We recently had the opportunity to see Kyle Eastwood (yes Clint's son, but a very good jazz bassist in his own right) in the Green Room at Short North Stage in Columbus OH. Short North is an interesting neighborhood with art galleries, street musicians, shops, restaurants and clubs. It wasn't too busy early - before the 7:00 show. The area definitely came alive later with quite the diverse crowd. Parking would have been a problem had we not gotten there early, but we were lucky enough to find a spot in the lot across the street from the theater - $5.00 flat rate. Short North Stage was renovated and reopened in 2012. When you enter the lobby, you will see the main stage straight back which I understand is primarily used for musicals. The show we attended was held in the Green Room to the left of the main entrance. The Green Room is a small, intimate venue which seats about 65-70 I would guess. The set up is small round tables with folding plastic chairs throughout the room. A comfortable setting, although the chairs got a bit hard after an hour or so. Since we arrived early, we were able to get a table front center of the stage. We felt like we were getting our own private show. The acoustics were quite good and the sound crew did a great job. The price for the tickets was very reasonable. Wine, beer and cocktails were served in the lobby. This was a really nice experience and we would definitely see a show here again if the opportunity arose. read more

This dedicated group of performers is just what Columbus needs in the arts. Unfortunately this type of non corporate pure art is disappearing from our city. The building is old and not so pretty so don't go your first time expecting the Ohio Theater. The main theater is just the right size. There are no bad seats so buy any ticket you can get. There is also a smaller more intimate theater room for smaller productions. Parking is a challenge so consider Ubering. When you get there, pick up your tickets and get a drink in their bar. And guess what? The drinks are allowed in the theater. read more

Short North Stage is the quant, "high street version of Promo West" with a theatrical twist. Three venues in one. Events planners: Choose from a main, proscenium-style stage, a mid-sized green room, or an intimate, historic bar setting. If you're worried about costs, they're very fair. SNS is a non-profit organization run by appreciators who want to support up and coming talent, and just put on great shows. Its a very different experience renting space here. And SNS provides one of the best, central locations to engage community. read more

My wife and I purchased tickets to see A Little Night Music at the Short North Stage because we love the show and anything Stephen Sondheim has written. I was lucky enough to have seen the original production with Len Cariou, Glynis Johns, and Hermione Gingold. We had no idea what to expect because we were not familiar with the Short North Stage. We were absolutely blown away. This production was the best theater piece we have seen in a very long time. The leads far outshined the original cast members that I saw. There was not a weak link in the entire company. Every single character was vocally and theatrically superior to any Broadway, Chicago, or touring company we have seen. Plaudits to the orchestra also! What makes this so special is that it was produced with local talent from the Columbus area! We now are going to purchase season tickets for the rest of their season! The production closed last night and I am so sorry for Columbus theater goers who were not able to see it. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful theatrical company right here in the Short North. read more

I came a few weeks ago to catch "Cabaret". I enjoyed the show and had a lovely experience. The seats are comfy and there are is plenty of space between the rows so you don't have to step on strangers toes to get around them. The only issue was the audio system it was little shaky but I still enjoyed the show. read more
