You'll be whistling the theme to The Andy Griffith Show as you meander thru downtown Main Street! Main Street is home to some lovely restaurants, local grocers, a great coffee shop, the historic train station, shops, Randolph-Macon College, and some gorgeous Victorian homes. The toy train shop is must when visiting this homey town. Also in the "downtown" area, you'll find several antique shops, a fabulous bakery and even a small movie theater! Be sure to go by the Ashland Farmers Market where vendors offer local vegetables, herbs and plants, honey, fruits, baked goods, dairy products, crafts and more! Nearby, closer to Rt. 1, it's more commercial with the chain grocers, gas stations, diners, James River Winery, hotels, department stores and other businesses. Entertaining the family is not a problem here! Ashland has a beautiful park located behind the Police Station off England St. This small, quiet park has a neighborhood feel with picnic tables, playgrounds, benches and even a skate park for skateboarders! (The Skateland roller skating rink is on Rt. 1 and has been around for decades and King's Dominion is just a hop, skip and a jump away from town!) While exploring Ashland, the visitors center in the old train station is invaluable for finding the historic spots in nearby. Scotchtown, Patrick Henry's Home is just 10 miles outside of town. The Ashland Museum will provide you with an overview of the town's history. The local library hosts numerous community events throughout the year. And the townspeople flock to the streets for the annual festivals held in Ashland as well, one of the most notable being Ashland Train Day which celebrates Ashland's love for trains! All aboard! I'm there! No wonder this town is nicknamed "Center of the Universe"... it makes you feel right at home!

Unfortunately, not enough time to jump off while passengers disembarked and climbed aboard. Lined on both sides with beautifully kept properties with green lawns and occasional split rail fences. With Randolph Macon College keeping the Town young and lively, along with a variety of B&B's and cute little Main Street with rows of shops on both sides. The Town's website lists regular activities and events. Heading south we saw a Marathon and tables offering crafts & baked goods. Ashland seems to be a perfect weekend get away, especially by rail! It's on my agenda.

Here you'll find an amazing selection of herbs, vegetable/fruit plants, flowers, annuals, perennials and more! And of course, the gorgeous lavender! RVA residents shouldn't miss an opportunity to visit this small farm tucked away in a Glen Allen neighborhood. Off Greenwood Road, drive down the country lane and it will dead end at the farm. If you have out of town guests, a ride to this hidden treasure will make for a fun day trip! In the spring, plants and herbs from A-Z are available, starting at Anise Hyssop and down the line! Some of the perennial herbs I had purchased here years ago, still come back year after year! My Sweet Woodruff was planted many moons pasts and flourishes as a ground cover each season! They also carry some hard to find herb varieties too! I'm especially fond of the Cuban Oregano, Tuscan Blue Rosemary(that's for remembrance, quoting Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet) and the Rue (you must wear your rue with a difference, Ophelia says!) Winter, spring, summer or fall, there's always something to see at Lavender Fields. In addition to the wide selection of plants, LFHF also has other amenities; local raw honey, tours, classes, a gift shop, teas, garden supplies and tools, planters, beautiful landscaping that backs up the the Chickahominy River, and don't forget their famous lavender lemonade and ice cream. I'm happy to support this family owned, local business that is spreading seeds of joy in their path, beautifying Richmond one garden at a thyme! The parking lot was cleared but to get from the parking lot to the stores was dangerous from the thick ice. Hope no one fell on the ice. So dangerous.

Everyone who works here is very friendly, and, while the store is a bit pricey, there are some good sales throughout the year where you can score some bargains. They always have cute spring/summer dresses and skirts. It's nice that it has a small parking lot since street parking can get annoying along Libbie and Grove.
