I first had Shrimps at a catered event so I already knew what to expect. I ordered the wingettes meal and it was just what I expected - excellent! The wings so so crispy, the Mac n cheese was so good and the yams are exceptional. The yams, the yams, incredible. The part of the experience that wasn't the best was the customer service. Everyone was kind which helped, but my husband and I asked for tartar sauce for his fish four times and never got it. From what I learned, it's homemade and like a staple for the fish, so that was very disappointing. While most of our needs were met, it didn't feel like it was a priority, so I would say maybe they need just a few more staffers on the team. Next time we might order takeout there instead. But, overall the food is incredible and that alone would make me order again. read more

Let's start with the good: The restaurant is exceptionally clean. It's small, but it gives that quaint, community-eatery feel that's really welcoming. The shrimp and fish were solid, and the gravy on my smothered turkey chop deserves every accolade. It's rare to find true homemade gravy in Richmond, so kudos for that. The yams were top-tier, and the cornbread, while flavorful tasted a bit dry rather than fresh. Now, the food overall was a mixed bag. The chicken lacked seasoning, and the turkey chop, although thick, was unfortunately dry to the point where I couldn't tell if I was eating turkey or chicken. My aunt ordered the grilled salmon cakes, which were a big miss, though she enjoyed her fried cabbage and fried potatoes. Now for the not-so-good: I attempted to call in my order and was placed on hold for so long that I arrived at the restaurant before anyone came back to the line. When I walked in, it wasn't busy at all, no ringing phone, no visible orders, and no customers picking up, which left me confused about why I had been left on hold. Customer service also fell flat. I still tipped 10% because I always do on takeout, but honestly, I regret it. The young lady seemed far more focused on her phone than on making new customers feel welcomed, and that's the kind of thing that determines whether people return. Called in an order, it was ready in 20minutes. Got the BP sampler which included 3 wingettes, 3 shrimpettes, and 3 fishettes. Everything was seasoned nicely, tasted great. I wish fish pieces and shrimp were bigger but it was only $11, so very fair i think. This is my first visit to Shrimps. I came in to place a to-go order. The restaurant itself was cute and clean inside. I was greeted at the door, so the staff was friendly as well, which I really appreciate. I placed my order and waited about 20 minutes for the food to come out. It was piping hot and freshly cooked, which is always amazing! I headed home to try out the goods. The mac & cheese was amazing! I highly recommend order ordering that as a side. They ran out of yams so I did not get to try that however, I tried the cabbage instead. Honestly, I was not a fan. It was too peppery and it tastes like the oil used had gone bad/rancid. I didn't finish it. The crabcakes were seasoned well, but I felt like they were a little overcooked. The cornbread was delicious. It was light, fluffy and moist. It was probably just an off day. Shrimps is one of my favorite places in Richmond! It's a cute restaurant nestled in the heart of Northside on Brookland Park. The service is always impeccable. The owners are very personable and they ensure that everything is cooked to perfection. My go to meal is the seafood platter with fish, crab balls and shrimp. I love the little burst of crab you get when biting into the crab balls. They aren't filled with bread crumb fillers. They also have very flavorful sides. The cabbage, greens, sweet potatoes and fried potatoes are well seasoned. The restaurant is pork free, so you don't have to worry about them seasoning your vegetables with ham hocks. read more

Let's be clear. Black own businesses want you to spend your hard earned money with them, however it's not a problem. The problem comes when the customer services is poor, and unethical. The price for the food is ridiculous for the community it is in. Now the food the wasn't bad. Their customer service sucks really bad. POOR, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I do believe whomever own this business might want to give your staff some customer service etiquette. Also when calling in the staff has no patiences. One of my favorite soul food restaurants in the area! Quick service, clean restaurant, good customer service. Parking is not too inconvenient. I had the crab cake with the collard greens, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese. I am very PICKY about my macaroni and this place passed the test! Collard greens were seasoned to perfection and not too sweet like other places. The crab cake was good just a little too salty. I'd probably try the catfish next! If you looking for alil southern style food shrimps is it. The ambiance is nice casual good for a date night, small group, or if you want to go solo. There will be alil bit of a wait cause the food is made fresh to order. Started with a rum punch is what they called it but it only consist of rum and lemonade want too bad but wasn't my typical rum punch. Followed by a Long Island iced tea it was ok but wasn't a typical Long Island. The wingettes were the start of the show for me fresh southern fried chicken seasoned to perfection definitely didn't disappoint down to the bone. Then I had the Cajun salmon Alfredo, was seasoned ok but a bit on the salty side if you ask me the pasta was made aldente and the Alfredo sauce was nice and creamy but just alil bit too much salt for me. Cajun salmon alfredo pasta was delicious. Portion size is not large enough to make it w servings. I tried to ordered shrimp, but they were out. I tried to order a salmon patty and they were out. Both items I ordered and thrn later was told they were out. I ordered sweet tea and was given a glass that was not full. I looked up at the bar area and realized there was only a little left. So I asked if they had more and was told no. So I had to switch my drink to the lemonade, which was good. We came close to 1 hour before closing so I guess they had nothing left, not even for tomorrow. Service was below average for dining in, but seems to be okay for carryout as I watched alot of traffic for pick up orders. The door is an issue. It gets stuck open if people don't pull it to close it. The floor is the reason. They should consider fixing it because the owner, other guests and I had to keep asking people to close the door. We stopped in around 4:30pm on Friday evening before a date at an establishment down the street. We never eat dinner that early but the timing wouldn't have worked out for us after our event. There was one semi large party dining in when we arrived and the establishment is smaller but there was space for us away from that party. All of our food was delicious! I probably could've ate it all in one sitting if I wanted to be gluttonous. The fried chicken Wingettes were seasoned and fried perfectly. As were the house potatoes. Normally I try to get vegetables when I go out to eat but what's a cheat meal without mac and cheese. Since we were there during happy hour all of the cocktails were half off (top shelf liquor not included). Both of my jolly ranchers were great. The only reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because my boyfriend's liquid marijuana was too sweet and his Long Island was slightly off. They also were out of Jack Daniels which is what I wanted at first. I could see one of the staff making the drinks diligently and tasting so I appreciated the detail but I don't think they have a bartender. I could also tell how popular they were based off the number of people ordering take out and grubhub orders. The staff were very nice and accommodating. I always love patronizing black owned businesses and this one was no exception. I felt welcome from the time we arrived until we were thanked when we left. My experience was totally Horrible. The woman taking my order over the phone acted like I was an inconvenience then I ordered salmon Alfredo with the up charge and rec'd shrimp instead; the dinner came with toast and a salad, no salad was included and lastly I ordered and paid for side or cornbread which was not included. I was awful disappointed as I paid $60+ and did not receive any type of good customer service or satisfaction. I would NOT recommend this place at all. Two thumbs down from me ... I don't even know where to begin. After hearing a friend rave about this place--let's just call it "Sea & Cluck"--I decided to give it a shot. Big mistake. Big. Huge. From the moment I walked in, it was clear I was about to experience something truly horrific. First of all, the atmosphere. The lighting? Terrible. It was like they bought every broken, mismatched bulb from a dollar store. Dim, flickering lights hung awkwardly from the ceiling, casting strange shadows that gave the whole place a depressing, haunted-house vibe. The floors were sticky--not just a little sticky, but like someone had spilled syrup, and no one bothered to clean it up for days. My shoes made an embarrassing splat sound with each step. I tried to shrug it off and focus on the menu, but that was a mistake in itself. It looked like it was printed on paper from the 90s, and it was stained with what I hope was just oil. The shrimp-and-chicken combo sounded promising, so I went with the "signature platter," which--based on the description--should have been a seafood and poultry masterpiece. Spoiler alert: it was not. The shrimp? Unbelievably awful. They were rubbery, overcooked, and smelled faintly of ammonia. The breading around them was so thick and greasy that it could've been used as a coat of armor. I'm pretty sure they were frozen for years before being deep-fried, as they tasted more like plastic than shrimp. I don't know how anyone could mess up shrimp this badly, but Sea & Cluck managed it with flying colors. Now, the chicken. Oh God, the chicken. I can't even call it chicken. It was a sad, sad excuse for poultry. First, it looked like it had been dredged in cement. The skin was dry and tough, like it was left under a heat lamp for hours. When I took a bite, I almost broke a tooth. I don't even know how it was possible, but it was like the chicken was somehow both undercooked and overcooked at the same time. The flavor? Bland doesn't even cover it. It tasted like they dipped it in a bucket of salt and then forgot to cook it with any seasoning. The texture was like chewing on cardboard. I tried to choke down a piece, but after one more bite, I gave up. The side dishes weren't much better. The coleslaw was drowning in a runny, soupy dressing that tasted like someone had mixed mayonnaise with pickle juice. The fries, if you can call them that, were limp and soggy--like they were soaked in oil and left in the fryer far too long. I'm convinced they were just pre-packaged frozen fries, poorly reheated. And don't even get me started on the service. The waiter was slow, disinterested, and had the vibe of someone who would rather be anywhere else--probably doing literally anything but working at shkimp. He couldn't remember the specials, dropped my drink twice, and when I asked about the shrimp's quality, he stared at me blankly as if I had asked him to explain quantum physics. To top it all off, the music they were playing was some weird mix of elevator jazz and a karaoke version of "I Will Survive." It was like being trapped in a nightmare where nothing could go right. I would've left after the first few bites, but I was too embarrassed to make a scene. But trust me, I won't be coming back. Ever. Final Verdict: A true disaster in every sense. Skip the shrimp. Skip the chicken. Skip the whole place. There are plenty of better options out there that won't make you question your very existence. read more

First timer, June 2020 Shrimps owed me nothing hands down food was delicious. Ordered and pick up, food was hot and ready on time. Second visit today....crab cakes with collards and fries. Also had a side of fried Shrimp. Tried something different to get the full taste of this restaurant. The crab cake appears as if the grease it was cooked in might be old or maybe the crab cake was over cooked. Some very hard peices on the edge of the cake. The Collard Greens.....huntay yasssssssss delicious and it encourages my return yet again. The french fries not my favorite I don't feel it's a good side item for the take on the go option. The side of fried shrimp were not my favorite either. I will say the grill shrimp from last visit in June 2020 were much better. Today they were rubbery and fried very hard; made it hard to eat. The cornbread in June 2020....hands down delicious! Today, I didn't eat it, the bottom was rather burnt (could smell the burned bottom more that it anything). Wasn't moist so I gave it away. I gave 3 stars because the lack of consistency in the food. Could it be a 2 star sure could but the collard greens were delicious reminds me of Sunday meals after service at church. This place is tiny. Do not show up in a group. Walked in and seated myself. The one waiter seemed extremely busy. It took him FOREVER to get to us. 30 minutes elapsed before even being able to order. Decent variety of food at fair prices. The drinks were okay but the food is the real story here. Everything I tried was good. Salmon cakes, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and cornbread... all very good. Crab balls were also delicious. You can order takeout from Shrimps which may be the wave. My daughters and I had dinner at Shrimps. The staff was welcoming when we entered and Hal prepared 3 cocktails to perfection. Our server was friendly and served us with a smile. The location is quaint and nice for a relaxing meal with friends or solo. The food was delicious. We ordered the signature basket with a variety of sides and the cajun salmon alfredo( added shrimp). Second time trying this spot off the strength that it's local and black owned. It's honestly missing something for my personal liking. Called in my order over the phone, whoever answered didn't come off pleasant. Upon entering the restaurant, my food wasn't ready yet which was no problem I didn't mind waiting but the cashier gave me cold vibes and the impression that I was bothering them when I asked for extra sauce/receipt etc. As for the food, it's not something I'd want to eat again. I thought since it was a new restaurant, when I initially tried, they were getting their kinks out but years later it's still not great. The crab cake isn't real lump crab meat, it's more of a breaded type patty which gives budget. The bread was burnt but I did enjoy the side of yams. Definitely sweet and savory. Nothing to brag about. I called in a pick up order at 3:11pm. I was taken aback that they require you to pay over the phone, but ok got it. I arrive at 4:20 to pick up my food and the lady asked me if I could wait 10-12 minutes while they fry the chicken. Apparently, they forgot my entire order although I prepaid and scrambled to get it together. Once I got home to eat it, the fries were soggy and the macaroni was dry. The shrimp was ok but nothing to give 5 stars about. The inside establishment is very small. Even without COVID the seating looks to be around 10 patrons. The hostess/waitress didn't seem to have any remorse for the tardiness of my meal. An offer for a lemonade or a slice of cake was offered but It would have been better if my order was ready. The two guest seated inside didn't get any sauces or condiments with their meal and then when they asked for some the lady said we out of Tatar sauce. How sway! I will not be driving 24 minutes to get this substandard customer service or food again. read more

Found this place a while back and always wanted to try it, my usual seafood place Sugar's Crab Shack was closed for some reason so I came to Shrimps which isn't very far. Ordered take out and got the shrimp basket with Mac and cheese, and listen... the food is sooooo good like everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The crab balls were filled with real crab meat not the fillers most people use and the shrimp weren't over cooked. Everything that came with the meal is amazing, including the Mac and cheese which I take very seriously since it's my favorite side dish to order whenever I eat out. AMAZING FOOD!!!! I'm here in Richmond Virginia on a film project and our production recently used this restaurant as one of our shooting locations. The scenic team put up a fake sign on the window calling it "Mary Leona's Cafe" instead it's real name "SHRIMPS". I happened to see one of the plates of food we were using as a prop in the restaurant for the show. I said to one of the other crew members "WOW! That prop food looks amazing! I wished I could get a taste of that! I'll bet it's delicious!". Well, one of the guys happed to get a taste because he snuck a piece! Well, guess what? I guess one of the chefs of the restaurant made a fresh batch of wings! He happened to walk up to me and offered me a wing! I took one bite and it was as I thought...AMAZING!!! Light yet crispy and moist and tenter inside and you can visibly see the herbs on the crust of the chicken!!! Look, I called the place to see if they delivered a woman answered and she said only through Grubhub. She said she was upset because a production company was here shooting and they've been loosing money because they're not open for business. I told her I was part of the production and she was about to light me up! But I said I'm only crew. I felt so bad. Happy Juneteenth! This place was popping tonight and worth the trip. The crab cakes with tartar sauce were delicious and so filling, and I'm not even a huge crab cake fan. I think Shrimp's turned me into a seafood fanatic. I can't wait to try some of their sandwiches if I return around lunch. The yams were TO DIE FOR and the cornbread too. My mother had the Salmon Beurre Blanc which tasted awesome. She was pleased with the Collard Greens as well Only downside- pretty long wait tonight, which was understandable!
