This is definitely top 3 soul food restaurants in RVA. I don't care what anyone says. Located in Brookland Park, tucked away from all the hipsters lies this amazing restaurant. I normally go when I have a craving for seafood. So far, I've tried the fried and grilled trout, salmon cakes, crab balls, shrimp (duh) and the salmon buerre* bland (probably spelled that wrong) and it's all been delicious! The menu is very reasonable. Items ranging from $10-20 depending on how hungry you are but they give you ample food and it's all delicious. Some "soul food" restaurants really miss the mark when it comes to the sides but listen...the cabbage, greens, Mac and cheese and cornbread all get an A in my book. The only thing I don't like is the need to put parsley on everything but don't let that deter you from letting your life be changed forever. So delicious! read more

We visited for the first time on 8/4/20 around 7:30 pm & I am DISAPPOINTED to say the least. We already knew what we wanted because we did our research & my mouth was ready for some good ol' yams. My son & I settled for mashed potatoes as our side since they had no yams. The other person wanted their house fried potatoes. When my friend brought our food to the car, we ALL had the house fried potatoes. I was starving, so I didn't take them back inside. What a mistake. They were SALTY & had green peppers in it, which I don't like. Our wingettes were old & clearly were cooked in old, dark oil much earlier. Ughhhh!!! I gave them to the dog when I got home. A complete waste of money. The shrimp were good. The cornbread was cold but better than the old chicken and salty potatoes, so I won't complain there. The lemon cake was pretty good too. I will say this, I try to be fair when giving reviews & I know I'm giving more stars than our meal last night deserved. I wouldn't dare give anyone food cooked in old, dark oil. The counter lady was friendly and since this was my first time there she was helpful with the menu selection. It's a small "mom/pop shop" kind of atmosphere in the middle of the brookland Park neighborhood. The place looks clean- bathroom was tidy and overall appearance of the shrimp theme was consistent. They even have a quote on the wall from Forrest Gump by Bubba when he talked about shrimp in the movie. Although not grammatically correct "Shrimps" is a nice brand new place that I could recommend to someone looking for soul food. The prices are not exactly equitable for the portion of food, but overall the food was seasoned pretty well. I took my food to go and it was placed in typical styrofoam containers. I'm from out of town and was looking for a seafood place to sit down and eat. This place was awesome. Super clean and trendy. Great music and vibe and the food was amazing. To me, the prices were on point and very reasonable. The portion sizes were great. My only issue....I have an extreme unhealthy hate for flies and there were a few flies in the restaurant, but its still hit outside and my fly issue is a little nutty. She explained the menu and what items were not available (ie turkey cutlets). I must say this always puts me off when restaurants do not have items on the menu. Glad they were my second choice. This is a small restaurant with about 10 tables and a bar. Small but clean and cozy. I had the grilled fish 3 piece which was topped with onions and green peppers. I also had the cabbage and greens. These items were delicious. The corn bread was just ok. A little dry but still ok. The others enjoyed their meals of the fried fish and shrimp with Mac and cheese both of which they said tasted great. When I'm in the area i will return. I recommend you try this place. When you walk in the restaurant it's small and cozy. The food is GREAT! Channell was my waitress and she was very knowledgeable, personable, funny and helpful! I ordered the fried fish, Mac and Cheese with cabbage. The fried fish was crunchy and flavorful. Don't forget the specially made tarter sauce!! The Mac and cheese was cheeeeesy good. Hands down to the cook/cooks. This food just melts in your mouth. I thought I died and went to heaven. I went to Shrimps hoping to satisfy my hunger of fried fish, only to be seated and told that they were out. It really hurt my heart, especially when my mind and tastebuds were fixated on satisfying that craving. I settled for the fried shrimp, and while it was something I didn't want, I enjoyed it, my only critique was that it lacked a little seasoning. It could have been because we arrived at 7 and they close at 8, so I'm willing to give this little restaurant another try. I think there may have been an ownership change or a few new folks because there was confusion about what we could order. That's about the only "negative" thing as the staff was welcoming and friendly and the food was yummy. I had the crab balls appetizer and the fried shrimp entree. The vibe is pretty local. This is one of those "hole in the wall" spots that's puts out solid food. I met a friend there recently for lunch and we luckily were able to get a table because it's tiny in there. I'd say it's more of a carry-out spot. It took a while for the server to make his way to us to take our order. I ordered wings and crab ball combo and my friend got a wing basket. The wings were seasoned very well, but cooked a little too lightly for both of our tastes. The crab balls were full of crab and very flavorful. The fried potatoes tasted like they came out your mama's soul food kitchen. What ruined an otherwise decent eating experience was the fact that both of us immediately got bubble guts before we even left the restaurant. My friend used the bathroom there, only to find out that the toilet didn't flush (yuck.) I hate to be the person who had to fix that situation. We both had wings so they had to have been the culprit.
