Aha, I remembered, we'd be passing that new street food police box that Blythe reviewed earlier today, let's stop by and try it. Cue, the best decision I made all weekend. Having had a busy day, what with the Tram Stop Market, the lovely chap who runs B&B had run out of slaw, so gave us a discount on our meals. Totally unnecessary, but very welcome nonetheless. As we were going to be walking and eating (no mean feat) we both opted for rolls - mine with beef, Kip's with crab. The beef was slow-cooked short rib in a sherry gravy, umm, amazing! Tender and delicious, the roll (from Manna House) soaked up the juices wonderfully providing an entirely enjoyable experience with every bite. The crab comes in a home-made lemon mayonnaise, and Kip declared it better than the beef (I wouldn't agree, they were both excellent and I preferred the warm temperature of the beef to the cold crab). B&B had proved to be so good we stopped by again on Sunday - this time I had crab on 'tarragon salted chips' and Kip had crab with quinoa salad. Again, he was certain his meal was better (it was very nice) but I'm a sucker for chips and these were perfect, yellow, crispy chips made in their little deep-fat fryer to order. Mr B&B told us he's got the lease for 12 months, so please do pop by and try! There's a couple of great sounding brunch options which I'm keen to try. In fact I want to go back again today, but I suspect 3 days in a row might be a bit excessive. Oh, and of course now I've made myself really hungry. Mmmm crab and chips...

After some extreme bargain hunting at the Omni car boot sale I needed some quick grub!…read more I had passed Barnacles & Bones a couple of times on my way home from work and going on the recent reviews I decided to give it a go. I was also interested to see what food you can make in a tiny police box! A friendly hello came from within as I studied the menu. The options are simple - crab dressed with lemon mayonnaise or slow cooked rib of beef. Pretty gourmet for a phone box! This can be served on tarragon fries, quinoa salad or on a roll. We decided to go for one of each on chips. The food is fresh and made to order so be patient, remember there is only room for one chef! Our food arrives in cardboard boxes and we happily take our wooden forks and dig in. Delicious! The chips are wonderfully crispy and the tarragon salt is unusual but the aromatic flavour works. The main attractions of the beef and the crab are lovely and soft in contrast to the crunchy potato. The flavours are delicate and tasty. I felt the beef was more of a success as it was hot. Although the crab was delicious it was cold and didn't work as well on the chips. At £6 a box it's not the cheapest but a nice treat. There is one small table and a couple of chairs, and a small wall nearby you could sit at - otherwise there isn't much seating nearby. I had the vegetarian haggis burrito with rice, black beans, salsa, and their homemade (suitable for vegans) guacamole. The city is really busy right now even just at the very start of the Fringe and it was a nice location just that bit away from the masses; it was convenient for me at that point in the evening for a quick dinner between shows at Chambers Street and the Cowgate. For the meat eaters they also have haggis, chicken, and Irn Bru pulled pork, and they have a selection of sauces you can add to create even more flavour additions. I gave 5 because although not exactly a full, relaxing dining experience, judged for what it is - a quick snack on the go - the food was good, the service was great, and the price was reasonable.

Their "one feeds two" commitment means that for every purchase you make, they feed a hungry person in need, working with feeding partners around the world. Much like Social Bite, their story is inspirational. Their soup, as well as their morning porridge, is excellent, with a constantly changing menu of options. Go soon and go often! Overall, we said: "Elephant Juice made me very happy. Their soup was spectacularly good and the service extremely welcoming, with the wonderful "Dumbo" providing a quirky serving station. I can't recommend the place highly enough to you. In the coming weeks and months, I think the intention is to take the van on the road, and offer their excellent fare in a range of venues across Edinburgh. Overall, it was good for what we needed to have on the go. It took a few minutes for my rolls to get done. The bacon roll was good, which worked well with the thickness of the roll. The haggis roll didn't feel as voluminous enough where you tasted more of the bread than the haggis. The millionaire bar was very good and held up well on the train ride back to London.

I've been twice and its and event that looks to be gaining momentum. There are no shortage of markets in Edinburgh. Stockbridge, Waverley, Farmers markets. Many of them have good food served from their stalls, some of which can be found here. However there's quite a unique atmosphere about the event. Off the beaten track a bit in essentially an industrial estate, it's not your typical venue. I think that works in its favour. There are large fire pits that burn throughout the day but looks particularly impressive at night. There are around 10-15 different food trucks and stalls which look to be changing each month. Hot food, beer and alcoholic drinks, coffee and baked goods were available. There was buzz there; it feels more like being at the Fringe festival than normal market where people grab some food and hang out with friends. There were some long queues though and I although I was that in middle afternoon it seemed food was in short supply and would run out by the evening. Hopefully this situation improves as the event progresses. I'd say grab some friends, grab a beer, bring an empty stomach, come early and hope it's sunny. I will definitely be back when it is next on.
