One of the most interesting exhibits was about Chihuahita (the Mexican part of town) and the Dudley School in Chihuahita (a segregated school for blacks and Mexicans). Their prize possession is the (unofficial) 47-star US flag created in 1912 when New Mexico was admitted as a state. The gift shop has a vast array of local history books along with some more traditional tourist items. The building is a historic adobe (it previously held the Plaza Pub) and there are some spots inside where you can view the original adobe walls.

They also have a large selection of stories and pictures from locals, as they try to flesh out the history of their immediate town and surroundings. Alot of love went into the museum. It's currently $3 a ticket, and I'd say you definitely get your $3 worth!

I enjoyed the pistachio delight that I bought the bottle there. All bottles there are $18 but they do have it online for $20. They do offer tours there. They have a pistachio tasting section so you could try the different flavors before purchasing them. We loved the sour cream and onion and lemon lime options. I bought those as well as the regular pistachios. They had pistachio fudge and tons of themed merchandise. Great place!

And then, 15 minutes before you're ready to take the tour, McGinn's notifies you that the tour has been cancelled because tour guide Garret is unavailable. Really? This is allowed? If you live down the street from PistachioLand, this isn't a big deal. Take the tour some other day. But if you've driven all the way across the country for this, only to receive news of a cancellation with 15 minutes notice, I cannot imagine that the risk of visiting PistachioLand is worth it. Their farm store is neat. Pictures next to the gimmicky giant pistachio are cool. But the highlight of your visit would certainly be a tour of the actual pistachio groves. And when they're allowed to unabashedly cancel on you with essentially no notice after spending a great deal of money and effort to get there, this particular point of interest is just not worth visiting.

The theater can also be rented out for special events. Alamogordo Music Theatre performs musicals here twice a year. The building was originally a movie theater, that has been converted and gradually improved over the years. The technical equipment (sound, lighting, stage) is somewhat bare-bones but adequate. All the seats are good, but the center orchestra seats toward the front are the best. The theater also puts on a series of tailgate concerts every summer at the New Mexico Museum of Space History. Ticket prices are reasonable ($10-$40), in part because the theater is a non-profit and is subsidized by generous local financial support.

As a traveler from out of state accompanied by two trained service dogs, I was shocked by the…read moretreatment we received at Winary Bistro. The manager incorrectly stated that service dogs must wear a vest to be recognized as service animals and demanded that we provide a "service animal certificate." We were then told that such certificates were not valid and that service animals must be registered in New Mexico before being allowed into the restaurant. None of these statements are consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Service dogs are not required to wear vests, carry certificates, or be registered with any state in order to access public accommodations. It is deeply concerning that a manager responsible for serving the public appears to have such a poor understanding of federal disability law. The experience was embarrassing, discriminatory, and completely unnecessary. I have traveled extensively throughout the United States with my service dogs and have never been treated this way. I strongly encourage management to educate staff on ADA requirements before another customer is subjected to the same treatment. Until then, I cannot recommend this establishment to anyone who relies on a service animal.
