This place is literally in the middle of nowhere but we saw it on the way back to our hotel from a wedding and decided to stop and get some to go plates before they closed. The lady who helped us was the sweetest! She helped us look through the menu and take our order and when our food was ready, she brought it out to us while we waited in the car because it was cold ! And she told my bf that she didn't know where we went (because we were still dressed in our wedding guest attire lol) but she said we looked so good together. lol she was so sweet. I got the dark meet bbq chicken and it tasted very lemon peppery which wasn't bad. The chicken was moist and cooked perfectly. I also got green beans, sweet potato soufflé and fried corn. Everything was cooked well, the sweet potatoes had like brown sugar cinnamon something on it and made it really sweet but it was toasty at top so gave it a nice crunch. Had the opportunity to talk with the owner and was immediately attracted to the restaurant from the outside...it just looks like a good BBQ restaurant. The staff was very friendly, the service was good...I had takeout but the restaurant is a buffet inside. It clearly is a place the locals enjoy and it is an easy stop if you are on the way to the beach. All in all, my favorite was actually the hot dog. The chili was excellent and the slaw had just a touch of sweetness. The BBQ was well prepared, just not my favorite style or taste profile...a bit too much twang. Shuler's is located off I-95, Exit 181A heading towards Marion and Myrtle Beach. You have to drive a mile or so from the exit but it's easy to spot. The place is a large wooden building that resembles something that would have been built in the 1870's. There are a few bench's and chairs on the front porch to relax in after eating or if you need to wait for a table. They have a general store with some interesting items as well. Schuler's is a buffet style barbecue and all you can eat. Their pulled pork is their best meat. I wasn't really impressed with their ribs though. Don't get me wrong, the were pretty good but I certainly wasn't blown away. Their fried chicken is good but again not much different from most buffets in South Carolina. Their collards are nice and they do offer hash. If you're thinking corn beef hash, it's not that. It's a BBQ or liver hash and it's definitely an acquired taste. I usually put it over rice if I get it. Hash was highly popular in South Carolina for many years. It can't hurt to try it as Schuler's is actually pretty good. We stopped here on the way to north Myrtle beach. You can tell this place used to be full of life. The restaurant had a decent amount of people. We all got the lunch buffet. It was what you would expect for a southern buffet. Food was seasoned well and good. Dessert included and very good. I love peach cobbler. I walked into the general store and you can tell they are barely hanging on. Sad to see nice places closing. This new generation doesn't like what we grew up doing. We always stopped at all of the antique flea market places and general stores on trips. The lady working the store told me they were going to be downsizing and changing some things. We wanted to kill some time on a busy summer Saturday on our way to Myrtle Beach so we looked for a lunch location where you could sit down, that wasn't fast food. We definitely made the right choice. First of all, the prices are very reasonable. Yes, it's $13.50 and it used to be $10, but the portions and quality merit the price. The pork had terrific flavor (vinegar) and the fried chicken was both crisp and moist. Every side had balanced flavors. We also had great service and people were so friendly. We found it a little hard to navigate the seating and other system, but everyone was very accommodating. My picky daughter ate chicken and plain rice. Finally, the outdoor area was really fun and fascinated my daughter. She counted 26 turtles minimum. General Store was scares of items and no bakery! Buffet had salty pulled pork, dry flavorless Mac n Cheese, hash brown cassorole didn't know what it was, fried chicken was salty, the so called famous biscuits was dry as get out! Shulers has some of the best barbecue and southern cookin' in all of America. I almost want to uproot my life and move to little Latta, SC, so I can eat here every weekend. Even after recent inflation, you can't beat the price for the all-you-can-eat-option. The Ribs: I've never had better ribs than at Shulers. I dream about these ribs. They only have one sauce, and it's not my favorite, but fortunately the sauce doesn't come on the ribs--it's table side, so you can take it or leave it. The rub is so good on its own, you will not need the sauce. Come to think of it, the sauce may not be intended for the ribs at all. It may actually just be there for the other meats. I think I've had so many bad ribs at other places where they try to mask the poor ribs with sauce that I've come to associate ribs with sauce. I do love a good sauce, though. That's enough about sauce. Something worth noting is that the ribs are only available from 4pm Friday through Saturday. The Fried Chicken: One time, we were not able to get there during rib hours, so I decided I'd try the fried chicken. I kid you not, it's the best fried chicken I've ever had. My mouth is watering just remembering the whole experience. The seasoning is amazing, the skin is crispy, and the meat is so juicy. The Fixins: All the sides I've tried are equally delicious. The only exception is the cornbread. To be fair, I think they went the traditional cornbread route, so it's not sweet and is on the dry side. Some people like that; I do not. It might be good at soppin' up some of the juices from the meats, but there are so many other delicious sides (and desserts) that this is a non issue for me. They have these little biscuits that they're famous for and those are much better than the cornbread. The smoked corn on the cob is another favorite of mine. Desserts: They usually have a few desserts available as well, but you can't go wrong with the banana pudding. Atmosphere: The first time we visited, they had just finished the renovation of the restaurant after being on the reality show, so everything was nice and new, but now that some years have gone by, the outdoor spaces are in need of some TLC. Staff: These are good ol' guys and gals who know hospitality. Everyone is kind and loves God and country. Last time we were there, Mr. Shuler came by the tables to check on the diners. I was on a 2 week vacation back to the Carolinas in September and made a few BBQ stops , 5 to be exact . I grew up in Bennettsville , S.C. , but now live in Las Vegas , Nevada . I have also lived in Texas so I an well versed in regional BBQ . For Pulled Pork it's got to be Carolina style . Las Vegas has exploded with BBQ places and I have tried most of them . They tend to be more Texas style which is great for Brisket and Hot Links . I was driving back to Charlotte for my plane that night , so I only had time to get a quick Pulled Pork Sandwich and Sweet Tea . I would have loved to do the buffet , but I had to hit the road . I have had friends post pictures on Facebook about this place that live in the Bennettsville / Marlboro County area , so I had to give it a try . The sandwich was good and the slaw on it made it perfect . I really liked the atmosphere and the general store . Great outdoor setting with rockers . The service was good and friendly . Now I have to do my ratings . I ate at 5 BBQ places on my 2 week trip home to the Carolinas in September and I have to give Number #1 to Smithfield's in Laurinburg , N.C, , but only by a small margin . Number #2 Scott's in Hemmingway was so tender and sauce with just the right kick Number #3 would be Shuler's which has a very nice facility and spot on sandwich . Number #4 would be Stanton's Fly In Barbecue and Fish Camp , which is in my hometown of Bennettsville , S.C. and has a runway for small planes and helicopters to land there , which is pretty cool . Another good vacation on the road lunch. Your Yelp reviews were plentiful and star-filled so we took another chance and it was all (mostly) good! The best bet is to go for the buffet and I did not see anyone not get it. Very reasonable at $9.50 a person which includes your drink and dessert. I'll start with dessert - banana pudding. Period. There are a few other choices but don't bother. So good. The buffet has about 20-30 items including rice, fried okra, corn on the cob, Mac and cheese, mild and regular pulled pork, fried chicken, green beans, coleslaw, and a bunch of other good things. The staff was quick in replacing and adding to the items that ran out. One thing that my wife did not realize in reading some reviews that that this is a vinegar-based bbq joint. When she tried her serving, it was a big no bueno. Kid and I liked it, though, but I do prefer the non-vinegar base better. As someone else mentioned, if vinegar is not your thing, don't come here. My wife says, "I've finally found a food I won't eat; vinegar based pulled pork." What was even better than the bbq was the fried chicken. Light batter and crunchy, and quickly devoured. Even got seconds of it. Green beans were awesome. Like a Cracker Barrel, this place makes you exit out a different door right into a 10' walkway to the "General Store." We detoured into the parking lot to continue our trip but a look through the door revealed a take-home bakery in addition to the tchotchkes. $32 for three buffets. Shuler's was just awesome when we first discovered them around 2016-2017. The place was pristine and packed full of people for the buffet. Heading to Myrtle beach we would place a order with a scheduled pick up time. The food was piping hot and delicious. In 2021 we arrived to find the place is disarray and the food was lacking in freshness and favor. Not sure what happened but the business has never recovered which is very unfortunate. I stopped in SC hoping to try a nice local BBQ spot, but this place was a miss-- both food and service. The pulled pork sandwiches and bbq chicken were terribly bland and tasted of plain vinegar. I've had great BBQ in Atlanta and Virginia that used vinegar in their BBQ but this was just sour and flavorless. I ordered a $10.50 bbq chicken plate and the breast I received was more bone than meat. Mac and cheese was bland, cold pasta, and beans and cornbread were subpar. The coleslaw was the only decent thing. Worst than the food, the cashier Renee was rude and acted like it was an inconvenience to answer any questions. Taking that dreaded drive down I-95 from jersey to Florida the only thing keeping me from driving to the closest airport is my love for finding something other then the fast food joints. I found this place and we ordered the following for take out... 1 combination...ribs, fried chicken, sweet potato soufflé, Mac and cheese, and fried corn. Then another combo, slightly similar but with bog rice, and pulled pork. Ribs were out of this world, fried chicken, a little greasy but delicious, Mac and cheese was....meh, sweet potato soufflé and fried corn, I wanted to marry. The pulled pork was everything I wanted it to be except I don't have a huge love for the vinegar type bbq sauce but if you do this is true Carolina taste. I was really hoping for big things out of this place. I'd passed it several times, going in and out of Myrtle Beach through the years. I love barbecue, especially wood cooked barbecue chopped pork vinegar based, slow cooked over a wood pit. However, this place seemed to have machine cooked and didn't taste any wood whatsoever. I did like the fact they added a little mustard to the vinegar based barbecue, which made it a little tastier to the palate. I didn't like the fact that I really want you to go with the buffet. I think they need to do more with their menu selections and have combo meals at reasonable prices. A lot of us baby boomers are shrinking our waist lines and eating less due to diet restrictions. This place can kill you with all the fat back and butter they use in their vegetables. I love deep Southern cooking more than anybody, but you couldn't eat here, but maybe once a month, or you're going to be dead of a heart explosion. The fried corn is off the chain, but it's cooked in grease. About every vegetable had fat back and real butter on them in the cooking process. Came at a prime time, which was 5:45 pm on a Saturday night. I was really taken back by the fact they didn't stock the buffet bar very fast. I think it was already cooked in the back in a steamer, but nobody was watching the line too much for a Saturday night. I think what really blows you away is that this place has got a really nice setting on a black marsh pond area with a wrap around porch. I also like the general store, but it was a little too pricey for real country people. I think we buffet was reasonably priced, but I would like to see some specials with combo plates with chicken and dumplings , with barbecue or barbecue and ribs and maybe fried chicken ,and barbecue. I also would like just to come in and get a barbecue sandwich with fries. Waitresses were very hospitable. I enjoyed the nostalgia all around the porch. I had a lot of old antiques if you looked around the porch at the front. I heard a lot about the barbecue but wasn't impressed. I was so afraid when I saw that their smoker outside had burnt down. I was afraid they had gone to straight machine cooked barbecue because it was safer and quicker. From the taste of their BBQ, I was right. You will not find much wood smoke in the flavor of the barbecue. I would have liked to try this place when they were using the wood smoker outside that burnt down. Oh and the HUGE flag flying out front... the wind was blowing pretty hard that day yet the flag was so big it was waving in slow motion! Pretty awesome place with a lot of thought going into the design....great job! The service is attentive, everyone is very friendly and seem to really like working there. They keep the buffet stocked, your drinks filled and your plates taken away. The chicken is melt off the bone tender, the ribs are meaty and taste great and the red sauce at the beginning of the buffet line is great on both! I'm not a big fan of my home town's (NC) eastern "BBQ" with the vinegar-based stuff, but this red sauce definitely had the vinegar but also seemed to mix in tomato rather well.... regardless of whether you like western or eastern BBQ sauce, give it a try! And, try the corn on the cob... very good! All the rest of the food was good as well, but those stuck out the most. The biscuits they had were a bit on the small side as I'm used to big made from scratch biscuits... these were about an inch or 2 in diameter and kind of flat. Not quite on 95 so you are going to drive several minutes to get here but overall I would say it is worth the trip. Food is served buffet style and drinks are brought to your table by waiters. The first time I was here the large store next door was not open yet as it was just being built. The place is huge -- so big I wonder what time of year it attracts a crowd that fills it as the three or so times I have been here it has been empty. (The most recent time the store was there but by the time I finished dinner it was locked up already) So, forget the time off 95, forget the store because I do not even know what is in it -- go here for the food. The buffet is not huge but it has some great items that I will come back for again in the future. The fried chicken is quite good and they always seem to have the usual BBQ staples like pulled pork. Someone I was with was excited to see the cheesy pineapple available they have only seen homemade before. The food was really good- it tasted homemade, not processed. The baby green Lima's and fried okra were delish! Something that Really surprised us were the biscuits .... Marcus raved about them... hmmm.. First off they were more like a roll- not a biscuit! And they had no flavor.. at all... so we are still trying to figure out what he was raving about..? But! The Pineapple casserole was fabulous! The service was really friendly and helpful. Something that caught our attention were the food trays that you use to go thru the buffet line- many places forget to clean them so they are kinda grimy... but the trays here were nice and clean and weren't greasy at all! Nice touch that shows the care they take in even the small things. It seems like the same people own the place because we saw them walking around checking on things. The General Store was a big disappointment- the merchandise was lacking... they had some nice jams and jellies but they were stacked on a back shelf instead of out nicely displayed. Thee rest of the merchandise didn't make any sense-there was no connection to the Shular brand. Not homey and southern, kinda cheesy- we expected more especially since Marcus seemed to focus on making it nice and big.
