This place was large and able to accommodate our large group of about 40 or 50 people. The portions are huge, I don't know how anyone is able to finish. The coleslaw, yams, onion rings, and chicken were good. I did expect the pulled pork to be smothered in barbecue sauce, but they have their own special barbecue sauce that's not very saucy. The sauce was good, but just not what I was in the mood for. I took the pulled pork home and put the type of barbecue sauce I really wanted and it was delicious. This is a great place for some good old fashion, barbecue food. And service was great. I would come back if I were in town. read more

We only ordered takeout, but the employees were suuuuuper nice and accommodating, especially since we are staying at a hotel. The pulled pork is moist and tastes just like you'd expect for North Carolina! The hush puppies are fantastic, and loved the coleslaw! Got my usually Brunswick stew plate with bbq and slaw and hush puppies. Brunswick stew is garbage. No flavor at all. The bbq is basic. The hush puppies cold and bland. The slaw... oh the slaw. Still the same somehow. Delicious as always. The little blonde haired older waitress was super rude and the vinegar sauce they leave on the table, the bottle and lids need to be washed. Fantastic country buffet with THE BEST customer service I have encountered. Collards are great, and they have a pepper sauce on the table which serves better than vinegar. Rice and gravy, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, baked beans, baked apples...out of control selection. The establishment has been around for as long as I can even remember. They were originally located 701 buisness /south madison street. In the last several years, it's expanded and moved into it's current location( Hwy 130 South Whiteville/ Behind Lowes Home improvement). Joe's is well known for their NC style (vinegar based) BBQ. It is absolutly out of this world! Maybe I'm a bit biased, considering, I grew up eating Joes.Their Buffett is also excellent! You will find southern fried chicken, fried cat fish,fried shrimp,fat back,stew beef,ect.....And desserts! The Buffett is awesome!. The service is second to none in town.The waitresses are cheerful! Pick up order. 1/2 fried chicken, no flavor, they could have at least salted it after pulling it out of the fryer. Slaw, recipe, or "supplier" has changed. Rough cut cabbage with runny mayo, again, no flavor. Hushpuppies were fine. Best thing brought home were the baked beans and unfortunately, I think they were canned. I was less than pleased, probably from listening to the hype about this place, but for the money, you won't go hungry. The lunch buffet, once I ordered it, turned out to be really overcooked production line fare - burned up sausage, badly fried chicken, over-cooked vegetables, lots of it, though, but NO BARBECUE OF ANY KIND, so I ended up ordering some as a side, doubling the price of lunch, since I wasn't going to eat there without at least sampling this fabled barbecue. Not special, not at all, and in my fifty plus years of eating southern barbecue, I'd rate it average at best. Service? Service was absolutely STELLAR, abd I mean "waited on me hand and foot" quality, and I tipped accordingly, since service often makes an average meal better. Out of fifty or so diners, I was the only person there without gray hair, so the atmosphere was sedate, which doesn't bother me at all, but it does make me wonder why there weren't even just a few young folks in there. Yeah, I'm from the North, so according to the natives what I know about NC BBQ wouldn't fill a thimble. What I DO know is that I love the BBQ here. I can eat it until I can't manage one more forkful. I don't get to the area often, but this time we drove almost an hour to once again eat at Joe's after a 3-year hiatus. Ordered the large BBQ plate with pulled pork BBQ and BBQ ribs, coleslaw, and hushpuppies. It was monstrous! The 3 ribs could have been a dinner in and of themselves, but lurking beneath the giant ribs was a mountain of pulled pork BBQ that made my stomach cry "Uncle" even while my mouth was singing hymns of praise to the cooks. She had a pulled pork BBQ only plate and I could not believe she finished it. It may have been the most I ever saw her eat at one time. The servers were ever-present, cheerful and called me "Darlin' " every time they stopped at the table. My glass of half-and-half tea never got anywhere near empty. Couldn't have been treated any better. I know I must have eaten the coleslaw and a couple hushpuppies but my brain remembers only that mouth-watering, tangy BBQ. I suppose I should be glad I don't live near Whiteville or I'm afraid I would weigh 300 pounds. If my 6-day trip had me situated closer I surely would have been there more than once. On the hour-long drive back to where we were staying, she said we should figure out a way to get back to the area a lot sooner even while she was groaning from an overstuffed belly. Great BBQ. Coleslaw was finely chopped with excellent flavor - hard to find in Carolina. Many slaws are shredded around here but I prefer the finely chopped. Several BBQ sauces to choose from including a house sauce. Sweet Baby Ray's for the out of towners. :) "BBQ" is vernacular for "pulled chopped pork" here. Be specific if you want barbequed CHICKEN or such. You have to say it or you'll get pulled pork every time unless they realize you don't know what you're ordering then they'll help you figure it out. :) Ambience was southern hospitality and family friendly, quiet atmosphere. If you're wanting to be loud and swap tales, everyone will be able to hear you since there is no overhead music playing. Waiters were attentive and helpful! I can't wait to bring my family back here. I have been eating Joes Barbecue since Joe owned it and he just had car seats in his place. Every Friday night as a kid I knew we were going to a movie and going to Joe's and eat barbecue. Everyone looked forward to it all day as I still look forward to it as I am growing old. Went her with coworkers and I was pretty disappointed when I got the buffet and realized there was no barbecue on the buffet. My coworkers told me that you have to order it off the regular menu. I didn't really care for the fried pork chop I ate, it tasted like it wasn't seasoned at all. The sausages were over cooked. The only thing I liked were the veggies. A group of friends and I eat here once or twice a month, the staff are great they never let you glass get empty, and are right on top of everything when you ask for it. The food is good and there are lots of different kind of things on the bar so you have lots to pick from. Never in my life have I had the absolutely worst chicken barbecue sandwich than when my family and I stopped here last night on our way across North Carolina. It was around 8 pm when we finally stopped to eat dinner. We ordered our food to go, and got back on the road to keep driving. When I bit into my sandwich in the dark, driving down the road, I noticed the chicken was a little hard. I took a second bite, and the same thing! My daughter then inspected the sandwich and discovered they had put two bone-in pieces of chicken on a bun! I had eaten two bites of bones!!! What were they thinking? If it hadn't been so late and if we weren't in such a hurry to get down the road, I would have gone back and complained.
