Sometimes you gotta listen to your gut (and not just your stomach)... I finally cured my curiosity by stopping in at Siam rice II in Newhall for some Thai food. I have driven past this place forever it seems with the same comments every time I pass by "I gotta try that place some time" well sometime was finally this time, I got there right at 11:00 on a Thursday and had the pick of the seating. The dining room is actually upstairs in a balcony of sorts, but once upstairs you are whisked into another land it seems, far from the traffic and trains outside. I nestled into a booth near the window and checked out the menu, looking for noodles. I found a pleasant surprise when I came across duck noodles (I absolutely love duck) after a quick check of my trusty Yelp App pictures, I decided to go with the noodles and some egg rolls for good measure. My egg rolls hit the table first and I let them sit for a few minutes to cool down. I found them a very standard egg roll that turned out to be very greasy. My duck noodles came next and it was love at first bite. I had a nice big heaping of pad-see-ewe noodles with lot's of bok choy, and under all of that was a very generous portion of delicious and perfectly cooked boneless duck. Every bite was absolute perfection, cooked perfectly with amazing spice and flavor. The noodles definitely made up for where the egg rolls fell short. Overall I fell in love with this noodle dish and I want to see what their duck and rice dish is all about as well. Prices were good for what you got and service was good, but I was there early before the lunch crowd. The noodles were very good and I look forward to exploring other Thai dishes from their menu. Met a friend for lunch. When we walked in, no one was at the counter to greet us, and when a staff member showed up, he didn't seem to know why we were there. Strange beginning. The dining room is upstairs from the entryway. Not a problem for us, but it's something to keep in mind if you're dining there with someone who has a problem with stairs. The décor is cluttered...filled with knick-knacks and strange colors (like a couple of walls painted mustard). The overall ambience was a bit dingy and slightly unkempt. I ordered chicken Pad Thai. It was edible, and I was hungry but, frankly, I've had better. The dish was overly sweet and seemed to be short on fresh ingredients. Where was the egg? The cilantro? The scallions? No lime on the side, no red pepper flakes that I could tell. My friend ordered a chicken curry dish from the special lunch menu, which came with rice (she ordered and received brown rice) and an egg roll. She gave me a bite. The sauce was flavorful, but we both agreed it didn't taste much like curry. Next time I'm in the mood for Thai, I'll likely try a different restaurant. read more

First time going here. Food was great! You get a lot for the price and it was delicious. I usually add extra spice for more flavor, but the chicken pad Thai was also fine on its own. Absolutely incredible food. I cook a lot of Thai food and am always a little disappointed when I go out, even to more upscale places and this place SLAAAPPPSSS!!!! They clearly have a chef who's creative since everything has a slightly unique touch to it. PLEASE READ! I called in an order and when I went to go pick it up, I accidentally left my keys and phone in my car. I locked myself out of my car and no one in my family was answering my call. A cook came out and DROVE ME HOME! I lived 5 miles away, and I was able to go get my spare key and a family member drove me back. But I am just extremely grateful to the kindness that was shown to me, and they definitely have secured my business whenever I have a craving for Thai. Siam Rice is so good and super cheap! When you go there is only one server usually and I think she also answers the phones and she busses all the tables. She's always super busy but so nice and gives great service. My personal faves are the shrimp patties and the pad see ew is toooooooo die for. I get it with tofu (not a vegetarian) and I personally like it more than I like it with the meat. If you ever ask for spicy, expect it to be SPICY. It's a super casual restaurant, kind of a hole but the food and service is great, large portions at affordable prices, also love supporting a local business as well. I'm not giving it 5 stars fine dining, but it totally deserves 5 stars for hole in the wall ethnic food in SCV. Let's face it, in any community that has voted Red Lobster as Best Seafood, you've got to be willing to give the little places with real flavors a star bump. Honestly, the first time I went, back in 2004, I was not impressed. The food was fine, but I asked for very spicy, and it wasn't very spicy AND the waiter never asked whether it had been spicy enough. I can accept that a place wants to ramp it up carefully with a new customer, but hate it when they don't inquire. I tried Thai restaurant after Thai restaurant in SCV and didn't find any that were good. I am picky about Thai food, since my family owns a Thai restaurant (but in a different state). After several people, including people from Thailand, encouraged me to give Siam Rice II another chance, I went back again in 2006. I'm so glad I gave them another chance. I've been a regular since the day of my second visit, and they definitely are good about the spice levels now, including adjusting it down if we are eating with other people who can't take it so spicy, but bringing me additional spice on the side. They offer some great very home cooking dishes that you rarely see in a Thai restaurant. The prices are totally reasonable. They stay open just a touch later than most the hole in the wall places nearby. read more

Long story short this place used to be good but sad that it no longer is. From the the service to the food I rate this place horrible. The owner should be more involved and fix the issues. Last several times I ate the chicken noodle it came looking like soup because they use so much oil. And also the whole employees from the cooks to the servers are loud and speaking there own language.
