I just returned from a weekend of fly-fishing lessons with David and I cannot say enough good things about him and the overall experience that we had. Fly-fishing was something I'd been wanting to do for decades and our weekend of lessons/guiding by David resulted in an amazing positive experience for us. David's passion for fly fishing and for the elements that compose the environment where we fished were greatly appreciated. David is not only extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of fly-fishing, but when he learned we have an appreciation of the local environment there too, he gladly shared lots of his knowledge with us. This included the environment and life cycle of the various species of trout where we fished and their food source, trout fishing up in the high country, the many various types of birds and other wildlife in the environment, some ranching history, etc. His local knowledge of where to fish in the Bishop area was on point. Both days we were at nearby locations that were easy to get to and extremely scenic, but with virtually no other fishermen or other people around. David's enthusiasm for fly-fishing was evident from the beginning. We got us geared up and on the water quickly, and his teaching was mostly hands-on with just a few minutes of coaching before we got our lines in the water, then further coaching from there as we progressed. Before long we were catching beautiful and healthy trout. When we'd hook up David was right there to guide us on how to keep the fish on and safely land and release it. As our skills and comfort on the water increased David would introduce new techniques to us and guide us to other close-by spots to wade into and fish. We caught numerous trout of various species both days. He provided all the fishing-related gear to us and everything worked flawlessly. We had minimal snags and lost flies, and when we did he was on it quickly to get us back fishing. Never knew anything about fly fishing, so I decided to book a Beginner's Guided Tour "on the fly" I called the place after business hours to leave a message, but you could also text the number according to their voicemail so I did. Within 7 mins, Dave responded. I asked him if they have a spot the following day, in less than 24 hours, and he was able to accommodate my impulsive, on the fly behind, if you know what I'm saying. He asked me if I have any gear and I don't really. I do salt water fishing, so my rods and reels plus tackle box ain't going to fly. Well guess what? He told me, by text, not to worry about a thing because his business provides it all from the waders, boots, and everything to get me started fly fishing. Did I have to buy it? Nope! Did I have to rent it? Nah! Everything is included. I find it an excellent value if you just want to try it instead of buying all the basic necessities just in case it's not the kind of fishing you want to do after. Come the day of, I showed up before my appointment time of 8:15 am. Dave told me to meet Steve at the shop. I knew how Steve looks like because he sent me a picture. Steve was already busy helping a woman and another couple. He was very helpful and attended to all their needs and questions. I introduced myself as the beginner for the booked session. He was baffled at first because he thought I was a guy because Dave told him that my name is "Ian." Haha! Sorry Dave. I forgot to mention that in our text convo. Now, Steve, my guide. As soon as he was done helping the customers, he fitted me with comfortable boots and a pair of waders. Is it called a pair? It was very light and fits me perfectly. Then off we go to the river in his Jeep. There's definitely off roading, but Steve was good at navigating the area. He knew exactly where the fishing holes are. Getting in the water, I thought would be challenging, but he literally held my hand for every step, every single step at ALL times. Some parts were muddy and some with gravel/pebbles. It was tricky. Confession time. I cannot swim. I told him. He listened and he didn't judge this island girl. Do you know how safe and comforting it is to have someone literally watch over your survival while walking, standing in water while the current is pushing through in sometimes knee/waist deep water, or when you're sinking a tad bit in mud? Priceless! Once we were settled in a spot, Steve taught me the fundamentals of fly fishing with different styles of casting, mending, untangling my line, what to look for, how to relax, how to reel in the fish, and more. He brought 2 fly rods for me to use. He would show me and guide my hand with grace how subtle or hard I have to cast. Steve was like my own hype me up cheerleader coaching me at all times. Did I catch any? Of course I did. I caught and release a lot. What kind of Asian would I be if I didn't listen to my teacher? Child trauma lives, I tell yah. Back to Steve. He's not the kind of guide who just stands there and fish with you. As a matter of fact, he didn't fly fish at all. He only held the fly rods to show me how to cast or when we were relocating. He also paid attention to my stance and showed adjustments to safely plant myself while casting so my non-swimming behind don't lose my balance or get carried away downstream. There were a couple of times when I was wobbling like a drunken Spring breaker and waiting on Steve to yell, "timber" and just let me face plant in the water, but nope! He literally would catch me if I fall. I'm telling you, he held my arm or hand, the back/shoulder straps of my waders in every step I made while in the water in the most respectful and utmost care. Did I mention I'm a female alone with a man I just met minutes ago? I never once felt uncomfortable nor unsafe. It felt like hanging out with an uncle or a close friend talking shop for almost 6 hours. Heck! I don't even remember hanging out that long with any of those fools. But with Steve, all day. Every day! Overall, Steve's patience, knowledge, helpfulness, guidance, and love for fly fishing was instilled in me. I loved every second of it. He made my 1st fly fishing experience memorable. And the bonus part, his dog, Cali, was my favorite deckhand. She's a sweetheart. We were alone in the vast wilderness and Cali kept us aware if there's any "danger" around. She'd alert us if there's other people or creature around. But really, I felt safe. Just cows and birds. My tip before getting to your scheduled trip? Don't get too excited and speed on Hwy 395. Stay excited, but don't speed. Why? CHP busted me for it and gave me a ticket. Did I forget to mention it was also my birthday? Haha! Truthfully, it didn't dampen my day. This last trip we were drifting in a small raft and catching fish while wading, nymphing, then hitting the hatch in the afternoon throwing some dry flys and catching fish as they rise to eat our dry flys. My buddies and I decided to make a weekends trip up to the Owens from the Riverside area. It was our first time out to this River. We went out Saturday and the bite was slow for us, we pulled out a total of 5 Browns and hooked into a few others. So we decided to call the fly shop and book a guided trip for the next morning! We were able to get on the water with Steve, funniest and nicest guide I have been with. He will sit there 1 on 1 and show you how to cast and coach you as you make the drifts into the river. First, I want to start off saying that I had a great time with David on the Lower Owens. He is a great teacher who knows how to keep things very simple for the beginner and is very optimistic every singlet cast. We caught more fish then I was expecting and will use him again for sure to discover some new water or get some flies and advice. What to expect from the store. When you walk in you will be greeted most likely by someone on a vice tying away. Don't mistake their focus on the fly tying as rude and just understand his job is to tie flies and support the store with inventory. As far as inventory expect a range of flies with minimal rods reels and accessories. This is a small outfitter with good gear, just don't expect to see isles of inventory and tons of cool things to browse, but the local knowledge is there. What to expect when getting guided. This was a much more casual and relaxing experience then I would have ever thought it was going to be. I booked the trip about a month out for October of 2021. I called and left a voicemail and got a call within the day to talk about the trip and schedule some dates. I booked two days with him. I called a few days before the trip to confirm some times for the fishing day. We met at 8am at the shop. I was about a half hour early due to being excited. David was there right at 8am and and outfitted me with everything I needed. I then followed him out to the spot we were going to fish for the day. Once on the river David showed me some pro tips like how to rig a rod, clip flies on the guides for transport and ran me through some knots. During the slow times he kept the conversation going talking about the incredible topography, history and flora and fauna. We started off with some indicator fishing with nymphs. He showed me what the fish were feeding on by turning over some rocks and pumping the stomach of the first fish we caught. My goal was to learn for this trip and that I did. He showed me how some tips for streamer fishing, as we casted some Wooley Buggers , caught some small rainbows on the dry fly and the last day we hooked up on some browns with an introduction to euro nymphing. If you are new to fly fishing and having doubts about using STM go for it. You will learn to fish and not just be given one. If you are experienced and just want to learn the area or fish with someone who knows what the fish are feeding on you won't regret it. Awesome experience. Took my boys and extended family on a flyfishing experience. 1st time flyfishing for all of us (6 in total). Dave, Luke, and Adam were great hosts and teachers. Extremely knowledgeable and patient. Would highly recommend it. For beginners, like us, being a little more prepared to get wet (knee-high) would have been ideal. If you have good water shoes like Keans or hiking boots that you don't mind getting wet along with a good pair of socks would have made all of the difference. Also, bring a towel and change of socks or sandals so that after you can change into. We had an amazing experience. We caught 16 smaller fish (catch and release) ranging from rainbow & brown trout, and Tui chub. Our youngest fishermen was 7 years old and caught 3 on his own! My family and I just finished our guided fly fishing trip with both David and Seth. The experience today was incredible and enjoyable. They took us to the Lower Owens and to the North Fork of Bishop Creek. No one in my family had ever fly fished before, so this was going to be a new experience for everyone. Fly fishing AND fishing the Owens River were two items on my bucket list. Because I had never fly fished before I really wanted guidance from a guide to learn the basics and pick up solid pointers. Some itemized reasons why I've given David and his crew 5 stars... 1. David and I had been communicating over text the last 2-3 weeks and made the trip planning on my end really easy. 2. Both David and Seth were well prepared and got us onto the water quickly so that we could start fishing right away. 3. David was patient and great with my twin boys who were apprehensive about wading into cold water. BOTH of them caught brown trout with one of my twins nabbing a 10-12 incher! 4. David is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable; he answered all of my questions with ease, and those pointers I was looking for? I ended up with a bag full of them...ESPECIALLY how to read water in a stream/creek/river. 5. David and Seth had different styles with totally suited our group. Both have incredible relational range: they both had the ability to adapt to and support my twin boys up to my mother-in-law. a. David is high energy, friendly, and very encouraging. b. Seth is friendly and had a slightly more technical approach. c. Our group did well having both approaches available to us! 6. Both David and Seth were on top of things, particularly when it came to tangles and when they needed to modify our fishing lines to increase our chances of catching a fish. When we were at Bishop Creek, the wind picked up, and Seth immediately asked for my line and slipped a split shot onto the line to help me cast. Within minutes, I started getting bites, and after failing to set the hook on 7 bites, bite #8 finally produced my first catch on a fly! I don't know when I'll be able to make it down to the Bishop area again, but when I'm down here to fish, I'll make sure to give these guys a call again to get a guided fishing trip going. read more

We took our Boy Scout troop on a camping trip at the Lower Owens to earn the fly fishing merit badge. STM Owner David and his guides, Steve and Adam, were amazing at teaching our large group of 11-17 year old boys the art of fly fishing. Their incredible patience, knowledge, and enthusiasm made the difficult task of teaching a group of first-time fly fisher youths appear easy. By the end of the session, many fish were caught, including a monster Brown! Everyone is still buzzing about how awesome the experience was and can't wait for their next fly fishing trip.
