It's been hot lately. Like, Africa hot. Paradise Hills Pool is a great option if you're on the westside. Reasonable admission fees, lifeguards on point paying attention, nice water slide, a few shady trees and covered table areas, it's a great spot to wear the kids out and catch a few rays. You can bring your own coolers, chairs and floatation devices!! They also serve free lunch in the summer lunch program inside the pool facility on the grass area during the week, and were even open 4th of July with a free popcorn and snow cone machine for the crowd. During the week it can get a little packed at times, try to get there by 12:30 or once they hit max capacity, you'll have to wait in line a bit until someone leaves.

After being a member for a few years, cancelling my membership and moving out of state, I've finally decided to review this club and my entire experience with it. Cost: This gym is definitely one of, if not the most expensive gym/club in the city. It was a bit over $100/month for me and my girl. Expensive, but looking back, I believe it was worth it. Why? Continue reading. Peak hours: Coming to the gym after work, weekdays between 5-7pm was manageable. I would usually be able to get what I wanted, when I wanted it. If something was being used, I would do something else, and a few minutes later, come back and it would be available. Defined Fitness was a nightmare. Yeah, Defined cost less, but during peak hours, the lines were 3 deep, and it got to the point that I cancelled my membership (probably in 2013-2014). Cleanliness: I've NEVER seen this gym dirty. A cleaning crew is always cleaning the gym. Any time there's ever been an issue with a machine due to normal wear and tear, it's fixed. I believe the company cares about the quality of the product they sell because of the way they keep the place clean. They've had issues with air conditioning, but that was resolved. I've seen cardio equipment break down, and within a few days it's fixed or replaced. A few years back, they also resurfaced/rematted the gym floor. Locker room/shower area: One thing I liked about the lockers, they have attached keys. Towards the end of my membership, they would actually assign a locker to you, and give you a key in exchange for your id, when you swiped in at the front. This was due to their old system in which people would take advantage of, by keeping the key to a locker, basically claiming that locker as their own. Lol. Perhaps this has changed????? Quality of trainers: Here is where they get a gold star. I've used their personal trainers, trainers that have degrees in kinesiology and sports medicine, and have certifications through the top certification companies. The trainers here know what they're doing. They even work with college students that are pursuing similar degrees, much like doctors working with interns. I thought that was great. When I was with Defined, I looked into the personal trainers at Defined, and some of the trainers at Defined have certifications that cost $200 and the test can be taken as many times as you want until you pass...what a joke!! Amenities: Their pools, one in and one outdoor are awesome. They have a two full sized indoor basketball courts, a hot tub, and sauna. One thing I really like about the club, which actually why I like calling it a club instead of just a gym, is that they have pool movie nights. They'll play a movie on an outdoor screen and you can chill on a float in the pool. They'll have bbq's and other events, and it makes the place more of a community. Cancelling my membership: Right before I moved from ABQ, if I remember correctly, I got the manager's email address, sent her an email saying that I'm cancelling my membership, and I think they took one more month of dues out. That was b.s., which is one reason I took off a star. Other than that, it was an easy cancel. Room for improvement: I think it would be great if they did what other gyms are starting to do, and do some HIIT classes, kind of like Orange Theory. Maybe they do, it's been a couple years since I've been there. Also, one time I took my girl's daughter to the pool, and we got charged $10, that was also a bunch of b.s. Considering how much you pay, if you pay for 2, you should be able to bring a minor to the pool without having to be charged extra. This is another reason why this is 4 of 5 stars. Perhaps the rules have changed. They should also be quicker to act on member suggestions, especially when a lot of members brought up a similar issue. I remember a few years back, they had some really crappy body wash in the shower. I know a lot of people complained, and complained for a long time. They eventually changed it, but it shouldn't have taken so long. Final thoughts: The membership cost changes the club clientele from that of a discount gym. The people that work there have always been wonderful, and have been a pleasure to engage. As I mentioned, I think there are some small things they can do to improve the overall experience. You definitely get what you pay for with this gym/club, and with that being said, the value is there.

That's because it's pretty darn cold in these waters, which was the case in my High School pool, true of all school pools across the country. And while I'd prefer the hypothesis that the temperature is directly related to budgeting, me thinks it actually has more to do with a certain unspoken swimmer's code: wussies not invited. Yeah, you'll suffer the initial plunge, but if you're dedicated, you can stay plenty warm by your own volition. So here's your warning, wussy. These waters aren't for the faint of heart. Every kid in New Mexico should learn to swim. Valley offers some great classes at friendly prices taught by, well, you guessed it, teenagers who know how to swim and double as lifeguards, and adults are invited, too. Overall, the instruction has been effective, but it's regimented and somewhat baselined, so if you have some experience in the water already, go ahead and sign up for a class that might challenge you, otherwise you'll be stuck with, well, New Mexican swimmers, er, drowners. Don't hesitate to sign up for the next level. The facility, aside from the chilly H2O, is unusual via ABQ standards. Sort of an A-Frame, the bones are wooden, the ceiling is high, and there's plenty of free swimming. About two-thirds of the main pool is dedicated to lap swimming. A second (smaller) diving pool is a great learning spot for the adventurous. And a third pool for little bitty kids is located outside, under the burnin' sun, a wading pool. Slap sunscreen all over your zombie before he/she enters, that heat is intense.

We came from a 2 day drive from Texas (so we are not familiar with the area). The first thing that was the first warning was looking for parking,,, when we asked, we got told that we could either pay for valet parking that was $25 a day or use public parking that had pay meters. The public parking had indications of cars being broken into with broken glass all over which obviously pressured us into paying valet for 4 nights which cost us an extra 100 dollars that we weren't aware of. However, the valet parking was ironically the best experience of the stay because they were very friendly and helpful!!! :-) Another thing was also the housekeeping. As someone who would frequently book hotel chains like Days Inn, this hotel would make you request housekeeping a day before which i found inconvenient and strange but it was nothing to tell home about. Until......we requested room service a day before like they had said.... and they did not show up...... :-( We went to the lobby to tell the front desk and he was nice about it and helped us out :-) The next day we were out all day and when we came back our restroom looked different... that's when we realized they had done "housekeeping" while we were gone (mind you we did not re-request housekeeping). It was strange because it was so minuscule that it gave off the impression that they didn't want it to seem like anyone was there. It was only replacing the towels and taking out the trash with the rest of the room untouched (from my past experience of hotels they usually make the bed, replace amenities, and take out the trash,,,, basically making it known they did room service). Lastly, although it is out of their control, the location was not great either. I read other reviews and people talked about how great the location was but, I feel different. The location itself was surrounded by restaurants and bars and right next to route 66 but, the reviews failed to mention there was a lot of homeless people around,, especially in the park that was next to the public parking. This made us feel unsafe and kind of detour us from exploring the area. Overall I can see how it would be a nice place to stay for one day but, if you plan on staying more than that I would highly encourage you to find somewhere else.
