That said, there was a lot less traffic in the area, so understandably, The Elegant Farmer had a limited menu so they don't end up with a lot of wasted food. We enjoyed the food and would have liked to sit outdoors, but the property next door had a huge bonfire going and it was very smoky. At first it was tolerable, but then the wind shifted and blew it towards us, so we ended up sitting indoors. This is not a negative review for the business, more so for our timing. We plan on coming back to Lassen Park to enjoy all the hiking once it opens back up in spring/summer, so we look forward to trying The Elegant Farmer again. It's a darling store/eatery, and the outdoor seating is charming. I recommend you try it out if you're in the area.

I washed a pair of trail shoes while on vacation, leaving my insoles out, and then behind at an Airbnb, many miles back in Tahoe. Meanwhile, I had the strange assignment to find insole replacements for my trail runners, which is hard to do in small town California (near Lassen National Park) but was not a problem at Beck's in Susansville. They had a way to measure foot pressure & fixed me up with a great pair of insoles that will have me back out hiking comfortably. Customer service here, both on the phone and in person was absolutely friendly, knowledgable and helpful. For those needing outdoor or comfortable shoes, they have Teva, Born and Berkenstock, to name a few, plus a large selection of sole inserts.
