We've been in business for almost 15 years in Berkeley and are so happy we've finally found Signature CPAs. Edward is not only knowledgeable, but takes the time to explain any questions we have. This review specifically pertains to Cecily. I was not happy with the service I received recently when I went in seeking advice on a letter I received from the IRS. Despite the fact that Cecily provided some useful information (hence the 2 and not 1 star review), her attitude and personality was abrupt and, some might say, hostile. I was stressed about the letter, and rather than try to put me to ease and reflect an attitude that "we would be able to figure it out," she was very aggressive and demanding in her questioning. I felt like I was being interrogated and this was not AT ALL what I wanted or needed as someone who was relatively new at filing my taxes and receiving my first letter from the IRS. She honestly had zero bedside manner and even if I had made a completely egregious error on my filing, I did not feel as though her approach was appropriate or skilled in any way. It's very possible that I misread Cecily and that she was trying to be helpful and this was her way of doing that but I honestly think she might want to know that her clients may very well have this reaction to her given that she likely deals with a large client base. To be fair, I will say that I was with my Fiancé during the meeting and she did not have the same intensely negative reaction as me, however I usually do not feel this way after receiving face-to-face services and therefor feel compelled to write this review. I was also not prepared for the $135 she charged me for a 22 minute meeting. She was not up front about this prior to the meeting when I spoke with her over the phone. I understand now that this is her consultation fee but was confused because I know that places like H&R Block meet for free in advance of services agreed upon during the consultation. I have worked many accountants throughout the years. I started with one that just didn't care whatsoever. Then I upgraded to the last one I worked which was actually pretty good. I thought. After speaking with Edward Qin at Signature CPA's, I realized I had been getting the wrong info and advice for the last 7 years! I came in with an emergency -- I founded a company in late 2012 and CA was threatening to disincorporate us if we didn't file taxes on 2012. (Yes, it was 2015, so this is also my fault.) Easy. Professional. Knowledgeable. They take care of me every spring. The CPAs here are friendly and easy to get along with. They are up to date and current in their tax laws! They not only do my taxes but I've learned how to get the most return back. Its like a yearly financial check-up and counseling. I also ask questions about rental property and investments. Love it! If you're scared about getting audited by the IRS, these guys can help you out. I know I must've asked some dumb questions since I don't know what can and can't be written off as deductions (I'm an independent contractor), but Edward patiently guided me. apparently I can write off their tax services, so that helps. they're open on Saturdays during tax season but make sure you schedule an appointment in advance. After having my taxes done by them for a few years with no hiccups, I referred some colleagues who ended up working with Cecily... they mentioned she was knowledgeable too. Weird that Edward and Cecily seem to enjoy doing something that we hate doing so much, but I guess it's because they understand how the system works. read more

Woohoo! This really is as good as it gets! If I could leave more stars I would. Edward and his team are super friendly and knowledgeable. Even if I move out of the area one day I will still be using them for my taxes. I have been working one on one with Edward here and there because I was still getting all of my papers together, he is super patient and very kind. I have a learning disorder and he has been taking his time and explaining things to me thoroughly so I can understand the process. He even helped me fill out my business license renewal form because l was having a hard time with it. He also gives amazing advice and he is very intelligent. I wish I had gone to Edward Qin to do my taxes from the first time I ever had to do taxes. I'm excited and happy to have finally found a tax processing company that is 150% professional, thorough, caring, and overall nice! Taxes are confusing and stressful in general and in the past it would add more stress to the situation when you feel like the person you are paying a lot of money to prepare your taxes does not care and has taken as little time as possible on your taxes and does not want to educate you or answer your questions. I had a really bad experience with Cecily a few months ago. I went for a tax consultation because I saw really good comments on Yelp. Cecily acted the whole time like she didn't want to answer my questions during consultation, impatient and checking her phone. Isn't it the point of a consultation to answer your client's questions? She just wanted to complete my tax returns and charge me for it. Once I realized (after a 15 min chat) that she didn't really want to help me, she proceeded to charge me over $100 USD for the 15 min "consultation". I told her it didn't seem fair to me to charge me so much for a 15 min talk but she said that was their policy. So I had to make that payment while feeling I received a terrible service. I am so disappointed with Cecily at Signature CPA who has missed to claim the mortgage interest in my individual tax return for 2018. She helped to amend the tax return but did not share any of the cost burden. She agrees that it is not 100% error from either her side or from my side. Her solution to the problem is that I don't have to amend the 2018 tax if I don't want to pay. I am going to receive $801/- for tax return just from that mortgage interest alone. So, how can any competent or knowledgeable CPA give such an advice? Moreover, she realized her miss only when she was filling my 2019 tax! She claims repeatedly that she has over 800 clients which is an indicator that new clients should beware. Any overworked CPA can easily miss to file critical standard tax benefits. Then get charged twice for the same work in the name of amendment. It is a rip off. Hope this post will help people to find a CPA who look out for their clients. read more

She didn't really know the answer to my question. She did give a partial answer by plugging numbers into her computer. I could have done the same with Turbotax. When I did that at home afterword, I got a better answer because she forgot, or neglected to ask a crucial question. Turbotax costs about half the minimum fee at Signature. This is the first time I've consulted a tax professional with a question not easily answered with web research. It makes me wary of the practice. read more

Answers all your questions enthusiastically, will give advice only if you ask for it and he is knowledgeable beyond any tax person I've ever met. After our CPA in Walnut Creek retired, we read all of the great reviews of Edward and Signature CPAs and thought we would bring our tax preparation closer to home. Either the current reviews are fake and done by friends or he is just not as good as he previously was. I am not very keen on writing reviews but I was so appalled by his service, I felt the need to share our experience with others. We have not been impressed with Edward. Yes, he is efficient but we feel like we're part of an assembly line. He is on the expensive side and more concerned about getting paid then providing personalized service. Our previous accountant always made time for personalized service and would make himself available to answer questions before and during gathering of materials for our taxes. Also, with our previous accountant, when we picked up the taxes, he would make time to review the taxes he prepared and any changes or issues we should be aware of as well as advising us for the next year. Edward has done NOTHING of the like. We've now just left scratching our heads with areas of the prepared taxes and penalties not making sense and told that he doesn't have time to meet. Perhaps we were spoiled by our previous accountant, but going forward, we will not be going back to Edward and Signature CPA. read more
