    Poppy, our Pitbull
    Breanne B.

This was mine and my husband's first vet visit with our 3 year old adopted pitbull Poppy, and we were ever so nervous for how she was going to handle being around other animals in a confined space, how she would tolerate being approached by strangers abruptly, and going with the Vet into have tests done. She was perfect! The nurses and vet were outstanding and straight to the point, absolutely amazing with her. I appreciate how their COVID system and mask enforcement works so well, too! I think Poppy made some new human friends at this animal hospital

The first time I went I had developed a bad taste for the Vets in Aiken who specialize in pets…read more This was the second visit. They were perfect with my GSD. This time my cat was sick and a new kitten ended up under my car Christmas and he needed to be checked out. My GSD is over 10 years old and they are taking great care of her. Our cat was almost 2 years old. And, the new kitten is approx. 8 mths. GSD has serious issues with Anal glands, but the regimen they put her on is really helping. TY so very much. More time with her is a blessing. The kitten had all his shots, will not be a Daddy for kittens that could end up under another Christmas car, and is thriving and loved, too much sometimes. My 2yo cat that I loved had to be put down. I thought his energy levels and attitude had something to do with the new cat added to our home. He started hiding and wanting lots of attention from me (he was always very independent) I got him from another Vet in Aiken that I have used for years. He had Leukemia. I was sure that the Vet had checked him and his brothers and sisters (at least five of them) for Feline Leukemia. No!!! I still imagine him in different spots in the house and I miss him so much. Very upset with other vets. and blame them for heartache. So I had a healthy CUp, an almost well GSD, and one heartbreak that was handled with Grace and Love. I will never use another Vet without making sure I check them out with their patient's owners. So, I have a realistic idea of Aiken Veterinary Hospital with 1 healing, 1 very happy fellow, and one very kind and caring group of women at this hospital. I plan on making their holiday baking a standard tradition. And, anything else I can do for them.

The clinic's response to the confrontation was to accept no culpability whatsoever.

That was a few months ago, then more recently we rescued two stray neighborhood kittens and I took them there for a checkup since that's the only place I'd been. After a wide variety of care to senior cat mystery illness to standard kittens with parasites, I'm not sure I will be going back. The bad news first: they are not great at warning you with a cost estimate before doing a service that they will charge you for. There have been a few things they've done (ear mites, eye stain) that I didn't realize would have a fee associated with it. I know it's too much to ask for a menu-type list of services and costs but I would appreciate a little more disclosure about those things prior to checking out and getting hit with a big fat bill. Additionally, I've been disappointed in their fecal sample analyses, they charge a lot for the in-house test and don't check for some things I think they should check for (no giardia?). The mail-off test is even more expensive and for parasites that don't show up in every fecal sample analyzed, that's a huge pain in the wallet. At about 50% of my visits there, the vet and tech do come in the exam room to talk to me or do a couple things to my cat, but the other 50% of the time they take my cat out of the exam room and into their back room to do things like draw blood or give vaccines or clean ear mites. I'm not sure why they do this; I have never had a vet take my pet out of my sight to do those things and I can't say I'm a fan. I want my pet in my sight the entire time, I want to be able to comfort them or at least monitor what is being done to them and how... I have no reason to suspect poor handling of animals here, they have always been very kind and gentle, but going behind closed doors is not a good look regardless. In addition to that, I've been at a couple appointments where I have questions for the vet but the vet never comes in the room, the tech is running back and forth to them with my questions. YIKES!!! I'm paying a lot to interact with a vet and have them explain things to me. If they're too busy to talk to me directly, they need to schedule less. They have also not done a great job in general of explaining why they do certain things or why they prescribed certain medication versus another that would do the same thing. I want to know the details- I have a science background and am curious and want to help make the best decision for my pet so when they give me a general google-able answer, it's frustrating. Generally speaking, their prices are competitive with other vets I've spoken to in the area but I have had some issues with medications and getting overcharged (medicine they gave me for roundworms for the two kittens costs $5 on Chewy but $22+ from them, and I wasn't given the option to get a prescription to take elsewhere). I get that they make money off of those products BUT the goal is animal care, and I'm more likely to keep up with regular vet visits if I am able to save money on things like random prescriptions or preventative meds. The good news! The staff have always been friendly and kind to me and my cats. Dr. Berry is great! He has a great table-side manner for dealing with pets and their owners. Dr. Ray is also very nice but is a little bit less personable and doesn't explain things or answer questions as well. The techs like I said are kind, but I don't always get the impression they know what they're doing. The office is clean and they're always quick about getting me into an exam room so I don't have to wait in the waiting room, which is especially nice with cats. Again, they have good availability for same day appointments and new patients which counts for a lot these days! I have been thankful to get my sick cats in when I needed to. As you see I have a lot of thoughts weighing on my decision to choose a vet, and I think the biggest reason I will switch veterinary clinics is location. I chose HAH initially because it was close to our rental home, but we have since purchased a home further away and as my life is chaotic enough with one human baby and 5 cats in the house, every minute of the day counts and a closer vet is going to be the best for me. The other negatives I listed above play a big factor too, I might not change if I really didn't have issues. But no vet is perfect and I think HAH does a great job of serving their clients in Aiken and for whom money is no object.

After 1.5 years as a client, I called to schedule a nail trim for my cat only to be told that my…read moreaccount with HAH had been closed, and the records were available to send to another practice. After I replied that there must be a mistake since I didn't request my records to be sent elsewhere, I was informed that practice management had closed my account. According to them, I made a "rude and inappropriate" comment during my last visit two months prior, so they would no longer see my sweet boy. When I asked to speak to the practice manager to find out exactly what I said and to whom, I was told she was "on personal leave". Convenient. I have absolutely no idea what I could have said. Was it misinterpreted? I will never know. My only negative comment has ever been that I didn't particularly like Dr. Ray. I didn't find her to be pleasant or personable from the first visit. I had just moved to Aiken, the office was conveniently located, and she lived in my neighborhood, so I continued to go there. The main reason I don't care for her is that about 6-7 months ago, I brought in a kitten to be checked out along with her foster mom. I used the chair near the computer to complete the paperwork and give some sitting room to the foster mom who I didn't know very well. Dr. Ray came in and before she could get through the door, she is telling me that I should not be looking at the computer because of the confidential patient records. I was shocked. I told her I was absolutely not looking at the computer only using the chair near it. The tech apparently (and irresponsibly) left the computer running after leaving the room, and I can only guess upon re-entering the room and seeing the monitor on, assumed I turned it on and told Dr. Ray as much. I never touched or even glanced at that computer. Neither the doctor nor the tech apologized for their "rude and inappropriate" and false accusation. I work in the nuclear industry, so I am very very aware of privacy and confidentiality. I was not, then or now, the least bit interested in any of their patient's records. I would have left the practice, but another doctor who I liked very much, Dr. Berry, was there, and I specifically requested him each time after that. He left earlier this year. Again, I should have left then. I find HAH's response to whatever I said to be ridiculous and extremely unprofessional. Noone called or e-mailed me to clarify my comments. Noone proactively sent the medical records and informed me of this situation. What if my cat had an emergency in those two months, and I rushed him there not knowing we weren't welcome, what would they have done? Let him die? There are other more established veterinarian offices in Aiken with experienced doctors. I would recommend going to one of those instead. I'm actually thankful to HAH for forcing my hand. I was trying to show support for them. I see fewer cars in the parking lot, and they haven't updated their website in the last 6 months so you can't even review the bios of the current (contract?) vets, and who knows about their techs...that's a revolving door from what I can tell. I have now moved my pet's care to a more robust practice with long term and experienced employees. I hope they learn from this. I know I did.

But when I called them Saturday morning (9-5-2020) we got no love from Lap of Love; I was told nobody was available to come to us and they could give us "an appointment for Monday"; what happened to SUNDAY?! I inferred from their website they are available every day: "Appointments are scheduled throughout the week, please call for availability". I was crestfallen. Adding insult to injury, the gal matter-of-factly added that since Monday is a Holiday, there would be an added $50 charge. Bear collapsed Saturday morning; he could not wait even another day for their convenience, but why did they not offer to come Sunday knowing there was an urgent need? I still don't know why no one was available all of Saturday. Taking Bear away from home was the last thing I wanted to put him through in the final hours of his precious life; he deserved much better. I was bitterly disappointed and angry, but did not take it out on the gal from Lap of Love. I scrambled to make arrangements with BluePearl in Augusta and also had to find a friend willing to help me get Bear (130 Lbs) in my van and to go with me for moral support. Bottom-line. Your experience might be better if your pet happens to be ready to be put down on a convenient day and time for Lap of Love. But I can only speak from my own experience and it was exceedingly disappointing. If you pin your hopes on Lap of Love, just make sure you have a plan B.
