Five stars, if you don't mind noise. 4 PROS: 1) Cheap. $20 a night. That's like a McDonald's Value Meal. (Thanks, Obama). 2) Great location. The Truckee River is a sleepy and underrated river that is safe for innertubing if you know the few spots to avoid. It's a straight-shot, seven mile ride to Lake Tahoe, and at 1.5 miles down the road, 7-Eleven is walking distance, if you wake up early and go get coffee. [That 7-Eleven also has $8 bundles of firewood, which comes in handy when your host is empty-handed) 3) Spacious space with a low fire pit so you can see the fire better, a picnic table, and a bear locker, the bear locker locks with a noise, so it's hard to steal cookies without getting caught. 4) Relatively small, with only 21 spots, which potentially limits some neighbor noise and keeps multiple parties closer together. 4 CONS: 1) The number one complaint for all reviewers is the car noise from the steady flow of vehicles roaring up and down the 89. Tent only spots 22-28 get a little buffer because they're the furthest from the road, closest to the river, and down a small hill. 2) This is likely more rare, but there's a big house across the river, visible from sites 23-28. They hosted a party the night and went from loud to louder throughout the night. They aren't subject to Quiet Hours, and it especially intolerable when they intentionally yelled and hit our tents with flashlights. I kept thinking it was an alien invasion coming to take us away. After a while, I was hoping it was. 3) The first time we went to our hosts at #2 (D & K), they weren't there. The second time, they were out of wood. Had we not bought wood elsewhere we'd be in the dark, literally. So, don't rely on the host for wood. 4) This is minor, but the dirt roads make the Indiana Jones ride look like a block of greased marble. NOTE ON RIVER ACCESS: I expected to be level with the river, or at least able to walk to a clearing for a beachy area, to either climb rocks or wade into the water, but I didn't see clear river access aside a few paths through six feet high shrubs. [Psst, US Forest Service: Clearing a thirty-foot beach area would make for a nice, safe communal space] NOTE ON BUGS: We didn't experience yellow jackets (super late June). I used bug spray to avoid mosquitos. Not a bunch of gnats, like other sites. There are anthills, but only one adventurous ant made it into our tent. Finally, Of the 28 sites, 12 are tent-only. Of the tent-only sites, the #22-28 spots are the best, though you have to use the parking lot and can't keep your car at the site. Having a spot a hundred steps down a hill means it is a little more quiet and private, but packing and unpacking is a little tougher and time-consuming, Plus, you can't keep an eye on your ride to make sure bears aren't tearing it apart to find an four-year-old French fry. #28 is the clear winner having only one neighbor. I would avoid 25-26 because they might share a path to the parking lot. The guy is 25 kept walking through our camp (behind our bear locker), so either the separate path is nonexistent, hard to find, or he's a jabroni. My wife loved 26 for the perfectly spaced hammock trees. I assume #19-21 would be next best, being in the pocket furthest south. #9-11 are trash. I couldn't imagine staying in Spot #10. Like #9 and #11, it's practically in the parking lot, so you'd see more taillights than starlight, but 10 is on the bathroom trail. It should be renamed #2. read more

Small and pretty simple campground with a few cons. There are no showers and the bathrooms are not very well kept. However, the campsites are clean and spacious. The big con is our campsite was right by the main, busy road so it was hard to sleep. Overall though, Silver Creek is a beautiful campground and worth checking out. read more

I usually don't write reviews but this place earned it. If you like sleeping next to the freeway with cars zooming by all through the night then this is the place for you. I am not a perfect person so I don't expect someone else to be but the lack of care and effort was clear. You won't find a piece of toilet paper to wipe your butt nor a light in the bathroom or any running water for that matter. The camp site gives no directions to find your lot. Marker post was broken and lying in the dirt. Also don't be surprised if your camp sight is a picnic bench surrounded by trees. Management comes around once a day to police the area, hard to tell that these people work for the campgrounds with no clear uniform or bedside manner just a random person driving up to your camp sight demanding you listen to their demands. Not a please a thank you or even a name in sight. Don't trust anything you read on the website because they do not or may not even know how to update the website. Safe to say that is my last time staying at silver creek campgrounds. read more

We have stayed at Silver Creek Campground about 3 times now over the past 3 years. It is close to Squaw Valley, where we usually have a timeshare at. The campground is close to 89, some people complain about the noise of the cars, but it isn't too bad. They allow dogs, and it is walking distance to the river. Short drive into Tahoe City or to Squaw Valley. Perfect getaway, never crowded and is usually low key and quiet. One of my favorite spots in Tahoe to camp, easy access to Squaw Valley for hiking and the village. read more

I would like to commend the camp host, Karen. She gets 5 stars in my book. She was attentive, caring, and sweet. The campsite gets 1 star. There were dozens of ant hills at our campsite. When I asked Karen if we could switch to another site she said that all of them had as many ant hills as ours. We stayed at Site 17 and it was literally on the highway (and so were half of the sites). We could see all the cars that went past all day and night. ALL NIGHT. Cars drove down the road and lit up our tent with their headlights and our niece kept waking up to the sound of big trucks. We had reserved two nights there and only stayed one night. read more

This is my first time ever camping, so I don't really have references. But the space seems nice it's quiet yet close enough to civilization and activities on and around Lake Tahoe. It is very basic, no power and only one water faucet. But that's basically all it needs and it's great to escape some times. (I'm fully aware that it's not a real escape with LTE signal, writing this review. But at least I was sitting by the campfire LOL) read more

There is now cellphone service at this campground. There are certain parts of the campground that does not have cellphone service but there are parts that have 4g lte for t-mobile. You can stream movies from your campsite. Great campground host. Very friendly and nice and he cleans the vaults everyday. There is only one water faucet in the whole campground. Campsite 27: very spacious and an amazing campsite which was just a stone's throw away from the creek behind the campsite. For campsite 27, parking is in the parking lot and not on the campsite - our campsite (#27) was a walk in site and hence away from the highway noise and closer to the creek :) which made the campsite all the more enjoyable! Campsite has beautiful view of the hills and the trees, walks along the creek, pleasant wade through the creek since water levels are low at some spots and the flowing water is not too rapid. All in all, we had a great time in the campsite. We generally camp twice a year and this is by far the best campsite we have camped at so far. read more

Fiancé, dogs and I enjoyed ourselves. Here are the pros and cons and you can decide if it's the place for you. Pros: Mr and Mrs Redding are kind and do a great job keeping the camp clean. Clean bathrooms. Inexpensive at $20/night. Close to river for fishing. Plenty of space at site. Close to store if you forgot something. Cons: At site 10 there is no shade in the middle of the day and it's very hot and at site 10 there isn't a great hammock spot. (I'd recommend site 9 to resolve those issues) Lots of ants. Lots of meat bees. A lot of noise from the road. Be a good camp neighbor...if you can't be responsible with glass bottles, pick up your broken glass and may be consider canned beverages. Pick up your trash. If your dog doesn't respond to voice command, keep him on a tie out. We're all here to enjoy nature, let's keep her looking good. read more

Hello Campers, here is my review from my past 2 night stay at Silver Creek. Overall I was happy here. It is close to the road Rt. 89 which can be very busy/noisy, but is also close to Truckee and Tahoe City which is nice. I suggest the sites that are close to the Truckee River. They are scenic as well as farther away from traffic noise. Some of these sites are "walk in", from your parking spot which may be a hassle for some carrying a lot of gear. My main complaint was that I found about 6-8 pieces of broken glass around the camp site over the course of my 2 day stay. WHO does this? Humans are the cancer of this earth, braking glass ( beer bottles I'm sure are the main source ) where people camp?? Really?? Overall the campground was clean and I did enjoy my stay. Campgrounds on the lake are completely booked but the ones along Rt. 89 do have vacancies for last minute trips/planners. read more

The sites themselves were nice, but the road is really loud. We stayed in site 21, and from there, I could hear cars throughout the night while wearing ear plugs. Camp hosts were really nice! A lot of talk about bears around there. I believe there were sightings daily, for the 3 days we were there. Lock your car doors, otherwise it's not uncommon for a bear to open your door if there is food in there. I'd stay here again, simply because the proximity to the lake and to Tahoe City. If I stayed again, I'd try to stay down at a hike in spot by the river, because I think the road noise would be less and the water noise would be more. read more

We camped in site 26. The sites are spacious. Ours had a firepit with grate & picnic table, but no separate grill. It is a walk in site, so a wagon would be helpful to carry belongings from the car. It is located closer to the river, but cars can still be heard from the hwy. The only major bummer about the site is the aggressive yellowjackets. If I had known I would have brought a screen tent (HIGHLY recommend) because they were terrible. We had to eat breakfast standing up/walking to keep them away. Brought lunch items to the river where they are much more tolerable. The proximity to the river is great! Otherwise, the camp hosts were top notch! We bought the best firewood, which they delivered to our site. Super friendly and knowledgeable. The site is not as crowded as those in Tahoe, and we didn't feel like we were on top of our neighbors. There are stores close by for ice, etc. And thanks to the bear box we had no problems. Hope you find this review helpful. Cheers! read more

First time staying at this campground and I would stay again. It's real close to highway 89 so it's noisy but if you stay at the walk in sites then you minimize the noise. The sites along the Truckee river are nice and spacious and the access to the river is convenient. Be warned though the sites are a short walk to and its rocky terrain is difficult but manageable for most. The only problem here was that the water was contaminated from the Coliform bacteria. The signs said the water didn't need to be boiled but it had an extremely foul smell and I immediately knew the water wasn't clean even before reading the signs. So take your own water. Pit toilets are never desirable but it's better than the alternative. But otherwise it was quiet at night and the stars are amazing from that elevation. Great access point to the river and even Tahoe. So take water and bicycles and you will enjoy this campground. read more
