When we arrived, we were told the bears were very active, which in this area, they usually are. There are alot of signs informing the public they are in Bear Country and what to do if they come across one. There's also information on the proper way to store food, so the bears can't get to it. Unfortunately, we see the carelessness from campers all of the time. It's very frustrating, especially when you hear a bear and cub may be euthanized because they have gotten too comfortable approaching people at the campsites and could be a danger. This place is beautiful and the bears are a treasure. If you camp here, please be responsible! Aside that, we love this campground. Staff are always very pleasant and helpful.

Goose Lake campground is a small Forest Service campground located on the Gold Lake Highway just…read moresouth of the more well-known Gold Lake campground. It is often simply used as overflow for the latter. However, although much smaller than Gold Lake, it is no less beautiful, and the lack of motorized watercraft give it a quieter, more serene appearance. Not camping at the time, we were simply looking for a nice lake to have a picnic by that was accessible by car. In the Lakes Basin area, in spite of what everyone says, this is no mean feat. The forest service seems to assume that the great majority of users have four-wheel-drive vehicles anyway, so no sense wasting money fixing the multitude of hazardous potholes on seemingly every access road. At this campground, we took one look at the dirt campground road and its giant potholes, and aborted an attempt to drive in. Fortunately, off the highway just south of the entrance is a large dirt area to park, fairly devoid of holes, that had a walk-in path to the campground and the lake. Goose Lake is a short walk from that parking area, and if you don't mind sitting on a rock, there is an abundance of beautiful areas to have lunch by and enjoy the water. Even if you only have a short amount of time, Goose Lake is worth a visit. The campground is small, with only 13 spots, and was quite quiet during our midday visit. The big disadvantage to this campground: no water. You would probably need to make visits to nearby Gold Lake and refill water supplies. The vault toilet was clean and relatively odor free. The daily camping fee is only $10, and does not take reservations. To reach the campground, go south on Highway 89 from Graeagle for 2 miles, then proceed south for 12 miles on the Gold Lake Highway. Definitely a four star for day use, but potholes and the lack of water knocks it down a star for camping...

Five stars, if you don't mind noise…read more 4 PROS: 1) Cheap. $20 a night. That's like a McDonald's Value Meal. (Thanks, Obama). 2) Great location. The Truckee River is a sleepy and underrated river that is safe for innertubing if you know the few spots to avoid. It's a straight-shot, seven mile ride to Lake Tahoe, and at 1.5 miles down the road, 7-Eleven is walking distance, if you wake up early and go get coffee. [That 7-Eleven also has $8 bundles of firewood, which comes in handy when your host is empty-handed) 3) Spacious space with a low fire pit so you can see the fire better, a picnic table, and a bear locker, the bear locker locks with a noise, so it's hard to steal cookies without getting caught. 4) Relatively small, with only 21 spots, which potentially limits some neighbor noise and keeps multiple parties closer together. 4 CONS: 1) The number one complaint for all reviewers is the car noise from the steady flow of vehicles roaring up and down the 89. Tent only spots 22-28 get a little buffer because they're the furthest from the road, closest to the river, and down a small hill. 2) This is likely more rare, but there's a big house across the river, visible from sites 23-28. They hosted a party the night and went from loud to louder throughout the night. They aren't subject to Quiet Hours, and it especially intolerable when they intentionally yelled and hit our tents with flashlights. I kept thinking it was an alien invasion coming to take us away. After a while, I was hoping it was. 3) The first time we went to our hosts at #2 (D & K), they weren't there. The second time, they were out of wood. Had we not bought wood elsewhere we'd be in the dark, literally. So, don't rely on the host for wood. 4) This is minor, but the dirt roads make the Indiana Jones ride look like a block of greased marble. NOTE ON RIVER ACCESS: I expected to be level with the river, or at least able to walk to a clearing for a beachy area, to either climb rocks or wade into the water, but I didn't see clear river access aside a few paths through six feet high shrubs. [Psst, US Forest Service: Clearing a thirty-foot beach area would make for a nice, safe communal space] NOTE ON BUGS: We didn't experience yellow jackets (super late June). I used bug spray to avoid mosquitos. Not a bunch of gnats, like other sites. There are anthills, but only one adventurous ant made it into our tent. Finally, Of the 28 sites, 12 are tent-only. Of the tent-only sites, the #22-28 spots are the best, though you have to use the parking lot and can't keep your car at the site. Having a spot a hundred steps down a hill means it is a little more quiet and private, but packing and unpacking is a little tougher and time-consuming, Plus, you can't keep an eye on your ride to make sure bears aren't tearing it apart to find an four-year-old French fry. #28 is the clear winner having only one neighbor. I would avoid 25-26 because they might share a path to the parking lot. The guy is 25 kept walking through our camp (behind our bear locker), so either the separate path is nonexistent, hard to find, or he's a jabroni. My wife loved 26 for the perfectly spaced hammock trees. I assume #19-21 would be next best, being in the pocket furthest south. #9-11 are trash. I couldn't imagine staying in Spot #10. Like #9 and #11, it's practically in the parking lot, so you'd see more taillights than starlight, but 10 is on the bathroom trail. It should be renamed #2.

I am not a perfect person so I don't expect someone else to be but the lack of care and effort was clear. You won't find a piece of toilet paper to wipe your butt nor a light in the bathroom or any running water for that matter. The camp site gives no directions to find your lot. Marker post was broken and lying in the dirt. Also don't be surprised if your camp sight is a picnic bench surrounded by trees. Management comes around once a day to police the area, hard to tell that these people work for the campgrounds with no clear uniform or bedside manner just a random person driving up to your camp sight demanding you listen to their demands. Not a please a thank you or even a name in sight. Don't trust anything you read on the website because they do not or may not even know how to update the website. Safe to say that is my last time staying at silver creek campgrounds.

There's a beautiful hike nearby, and our teepee was just a short walk from the river, which made the experience even more special. The lounge area was a fun bonus, filled with games and a ping-pong table--we had a great time playing table tennis together. Overall, it was a peaceful and relaxing stay. It's nice to be able to go out downtown and walk home to your campsite. The only walk-able beach isn't dog-friendly and will likely be always pretty crowded. We biked to a nearby dog-friendly beach when we stayed here, so I'd definitely recommend bringing bikes. There are endless biking and hiking trails around the area. I'd highly recommend staying here if you're not a *huge* camper, but want to try it out because there are great amenities (walking distance to town / restaurants, hot showers, flushable toilets, and running water). My biggest gripes about this campground were the pollen (uncontrollable) and the road noise. There are some sites where you're seemingly camping on the road, so watchout.

The campsite is woodsy…read moreenough to feel like you're camping, but close enough to the town to enjoy local sites and eateries. (A coffee shop [Coffee Connexion] is just up the way, an easy walk in the morning.) That said, the site is very close to the road, so it's noisy, even at night. Earplugs recommended for a good night's sleep. The road quiets down considerably in the middle of the night, but that doesn't mean the occasional cargo truck won't come roaring by. The facilities are good, with restrooms and showers conveniently located. The men's restroom ran out of paper towels by Sunday evening, but was restocked by Monday afternoon. The showers cost quarters: minimum 50 cents for 5 min (although I times it twice, and it goes closer to 6 or 6 1/2 minutes). There are no lights at the site, except for at the restroom, so have flashlights or headlamps. There are bear boxes to stow food and smellies overnight and while you're away (bring a lock for when you're away). You can't wash dishes at the site spigots or the bathroom, so have an alternate dishwashing plan. The spigot provide good drinking water. Overall, nice campsite. I'd be willing to return.

The campground is located immediately off I-80 and so it has really good cell coverage and in addition to the river, you'll hear the trucks going past. The campground is in very good condition with clearly marked parking spaces, fire pits and a public restroom building that does not have running water. It's better than going in the woods. We chose this site out of last-minute necessity and proximity to Lake Tahoe. It's almost impossible to find last-minute camping, so we were happy to find a spot to car camp and throw some tents down after a long day on Lake Tahoe. The reservoir is very nice and water levels are still high thanks to the dam. Plenty of folks swimming, boating, and paddle boarding. The water temp was quite warmer when compared to other mountain lakes. The campground itself is very bare bones. You have a picnic table and fire ring with vault toilets. You'll want to look carefully at the site map when booking, as some of the waterfront sites are wonderful while others feel more like you're just camping in a dirt lot lol. There's very little shade here, so keep that in mind as well. If you're looking for privacy or quiet time, this is not the campground for you. The sites are squeezed in pretty close together and folks were quite loud into the night. Overall, the location and reservoir make it worth considering when exploring Truckee or Lake Tahoe. Sites are $28 with tax for 6 people. $5 for additional vehicles.
