While the experience I had here checked all the boxes for me in terms of budget and entertainment value, potential customers should know terrariums can be a fairly spendy craft project. Quality glass vessels, healthy plants, and specialty materials come at a cost, but Silver Falls does all of the heavy lifting in terms of growing and sourcing the materials for you. In the end, I spent just over $200 for several hours of entertainment and education, my vessel, the plants, and a lifetime warranty. I love that the shop's terrariums are backed by a no-fault guarantee and ongoing maintenance support, which adds significant value to the experience overall. The owner, Gregg, is the secret ingredient that really makes this place work. He's a fascinating character, with an impressive knowledge of the history, culture and science of terrariums. I was expecting a simple, hands on activity, but Gregg really gave us in depth knowledge about the fascinating origins of terrariums, info on how these closed ecosystems function, and the principles behind keeping them healthy and thriving. Scam Alert! You get ZERO terrarium or supplies with your $60 class fee. All you get is a 45 minute science and history lesson. To actually build a terrarium during the class, you have to buy one of the glass containers sold in the shop that the vast majority cost between $150-$250. The cheapest possible option is a standard mason jar that retails in the shop for approximately $75. You then get to use the rocks and dirt and plants available. read more

My daughter and I went and had the best time! We learned so much! We went for my benefit but when we left, my daughter said she was now in her plant era, lol! We highly recommend Gregg! He is so welcoming so knowledgeable and just so much fun. First thing she asked was can we do it again?10/10 highly recommend! We saw a lot of reviews that talked about about the prices and we thought the prices were extremely fair and reasonable, and I would gladly pay them again. He was also aware that budget was a factor and he had deals available. But, keep in mind that what you're doing is an investment and not something that's just gonna be forgotten about. I feel bad leaving less than a five star review, especially for a small business with such a passionate owner, but I felt mislead by the pricing. We bought a Groupon for class admission, which was $38 per person and included a $25 credit toward what I thought were upgrades. When I looked at the confirmation email, it said "Simply pick the style that fits your taste and budget and, and, if need be, cover the difference at the end of the class." To me "if need be" means you get to CHOOSE whether you want to go all out and get something fancy, or stick with what's included. Unfortunately *nothing* to build a terrarium is included, and the options for what I would consider a basic terrarium were extremely expensive. I understand that there's a cost involved in all the materials, but I paid $38 for the class (normally $60) plus an unexpected $49 for a mason jar sized terrarium. There were zero other options under $100. A gallon sized jar (like the kind you get at TJ Maxx) was $138+ NOT including the cost of the class. I brought my daughter and her friend and had no idea I would be paying $150 for the three of us to make tiny terrariums after I'd already paid for the class. Gregg did offer a "Robin Hood" discount on a larger jar (which I have at home and paid $10 for) for $80 each, which now brings the price per person to $118. The website says nothing about any additional charges to make the terrarium, which to me is misleading and left a sour taste in my mouth. $60 for one person to take a class is a big stretch for many people, especially these days. Luckily I am not going to starve to death after this unexpected charge, but I can see how someone might be brought to tears by being in the uncomfortable position of having to choose the "poor person" jar (which is still nearly $200 for two people) or just leave with empty hands because they can't afford anything more than what they'd already paid - that's not just disappointing, it's embarrassing. Even the "glass cleaning magnets" were an additional charge...even for the people who easily dropped $600+ for their group. I would have loved to make a bigger terrarium, but we would have been out $500+ if we had each chosen what we actually wanted. The class was great, but I was blown away by the unexpected cost. Gregg, thank you for the wonderful history, class, and supplies. I just think you need to be more upfront with your pricing. read more

You pay $60 for the class, but what you don't know is that when you arrive you'll have to pay up to hundreds of dollars for the jar unless you choose a small mason jar (which will still set you back at least $75). He charges hundreds for glass food storage jars you can buy at Michael's or TJ Max for $30. Gregg needs to put the prices of the jars on the front page of his website. That he refuses to do so shows me that his business model is to hide the true cost and then count on people being too embarrassed to walk out when they learn the truth. This class would be a terrible gift for someone who doesn't have much money. After driving all the way to Silver Falls they'd be stuck with a tough choice. That said, the class was fine and the terrariums are nice if you shell out for a decent jar (like in the photos on the website). I'm sure some people would pay the price willingly, and he should base his business model on quality for a transparent price, not tricking people. read more

Our group of 4 had so much fun building our terrariums - they turned out absolutely beautiful and we will enjoy them for years to come. But, we strongly feel that Gregg should be more transparent with the pricing. We were under the impression that our class fee would include everything needed for a small, basic terrarium based on the class description and some back and forth email exchanges I had with him (although to be fair, he never stated this directly). We were quite shocked by the pricing when we arrived at the class, I'm not sure there were any options that were less than an additional $100, and most seemed to run from $150-$250+. Our group of 4 spent well more than $150 each additionally that day. When I saw the pricing, I literally considered turning around and just forfeiting my pre-paid class fee. The website needs to be more upfront about pricing. That said, I do want to emphasize that Gregg was very knowledgeable, we had a great time, and we each left with a very beautiful end product! My daughter bought a terrarium making class for me and took me out to build our own terrariums. The experience was Fantastic and my terrarium turned out gorgeous. My dog broke it 2 weeks later and the owner replanted it for me for just the cost of the new glass container . I was so pleased! I highly recommend going there for a great experience! read more
