Who knew such a cute park was taking up a huge chunk of central Brenham. It's like central park! Firemans park (and yes, they seem to spell it without the 's) is a large park that spans several blocks. It has everything! It has a large central covered pavilions with lots (20+) metal picnic tables. It was several playgrounds with apparatus appropriate for babies to teens. They have an old tennis court that the town has converted into a skate park. We saw several young men using it on a hot Sunday afternoon. There are plenty of bathroom facilities and parking. There is a large baseball field with covered bleacher stands. The absolute best part of the park is the antique carousel. The city was the recipient of a found and then restored carousel which is now housed in a circular building that was made just for it. I'm not sure when it is in general use operation, but I can tell you that for parties, you can rent it. Ok, so I went to a birthday party for a 3 year old, where we had kids playing all around the park. I thought the mom was going over the top with expense by renting the carousel, but boy was I wrong!! It's only $25 an hour to rent the whole carousel. No joke. Adults can ride in the benches while children under 12 can ride the horses. It was awesome! Everyone enjoyed it, and it was wonderful to be able to ride and ride. You know how when you were a kid or maybe even last week when you went to ride something and when it was over, you had to leave? It's no fun! I always wanted to ride the roller coaster several times, especially after spending all day waiting in line at Astroworld. Well, you can rent the carousel and it's your own private ride and no one is kicking you off. Anyway, the park is awesome. It's a great place to go in Brenham. I highly recommend it, and if you live in the area, it's a wonderful location for a party. Just make sure and call ahead to reserve the carousel!

Rope play structure was a hit.

It was amazing to explore the townsite and explore the building where the declaration of independence from Mexico was signed. It allowed me to enjoy the walk while understanding more about Washington on the Brazos River. Got to see the famous Brazos River and imagine how life was or could have been. Washington, Texas could have been a bustling city like Austin. It was fun seeing the old life acted out in the exact place it happened. It was fun hearing from those playing the various roles all over the park. It's a nice and sacred part of Texas history. One can explore neighboring areas like Navasota or Chappell Hill for dinner. Was hoping to have dinner at Bevers in Chappell Hill but it was closed. It was an easy drive home. Found a new way to get 10k steps in.

May was our month to come together and celebrate family and food (lots of food) and get reacquainted. Unfortunately, for years, Henderson Park didn't receive the maintenance needed to make it plausible to continue having reunions here anymore, but I was shocked to see the upgrades to Henderson on a recent visit to Brenham. Lots of tlc has been poured into this park to revitalize it. In fact, I didn't even know how much history was apart of the park until I read the newly installed landmark signage that designates Henderson as a Lone Star Legacy Park, the highest honor that a park can receive according to the Texas Recreational and Parks Society. The designation was received in 2022, but the park is actually older than Fireman's Park across the street, which received the Lone Star Legacy Park honor in 2014. I'm just glad that this historical landmark has been restored and rejuvenated with a new venue with AC, which is a great update because my family use to place screens on the windows and run fans when we used Henderson back in the day. You'll also enjoy a bbq pit on the premises as well as a covered partition with picnic style benches as well as playgrounds, basketball courts and a baseball field which has a extraordinary place in history because Henderson (which was the park designated for African Americans during segregation) gave the Negro Leagues (and that is what they were called, so I am not going to change history here) a place and space to play. I am so glad that the baseball park remains a vital part of the park as well as the addition of a waterpark around the entryway to Henderson. Spacious and attractive, a day at Henderson provides some relaxation, relief, and literally a breath of fresh air if you visit. I'm excited to bring the family back together post covid to relaunch our reunions at Henderson in the near future, but I give pause and recognize how great it is that history still holds a special place in people's hearts and minds. Henderson Park will forever be a part of history. Let us not only celebrate it but cherish its presence and preservation to keep history alive in our community.
