Came to this lovely little cafe the other day with my cousin and we had a lovely experience! You walk in and it is absolutely adorable and rustic. They have a coffee shop and a cafe and plenty of seating! They have a delicious sandwich menu and we were not disappointed with the sandwiches we choose! She had the thanksgiving sandwich and I had the ham and brie! Both are to die for! Another great thing about this spot is they have a variety of gift items you can buy for yourself or others! For example you can buy kitchen cloths, mugs, candles, art pieces and more! Sadly I am not from the area but if I was I would come here probably once a week or more! Had been looking for a deli to grab some sandwiches on our way to the ferry/Gillette's Castle. We pulled in at a diner that had just closed up for the day in Deep River and they suggested that we try this place. Chester is a cute little town and this was a great recommendation. Tried this place for the first time during Chester's Chocolate Festival. It's a very cute store. However, we went at a pretty busy time so there wasn't much room to sit. I tried the Montauk sandwich. I first noticed that it didn't have a side. The Wheatmarket (right down the road) provides a side wth every sandwich. The tuna was ok. I thought it was pretty dry and needed salt. Honestly, a tuna sandwich is pretty hard to mess up. My husband had the BLT. He enjoyed it and thought it had some good flavor. He also mentioned it needed salt. I had to knock off one star just for the cleanliness of the bathroom. It was beyond unacceptable. There was dirt and grime all over. Even the toilet paper was on the floor. I would highly recommend cleaning that up before a health inspector shows up. If given a choice, I would visit the Wheatmarket before Simon's. read more

What a pleasant surprise Simon's turned out to be. Great choices for lunch. I had the Mezze plate-2 premium salads with mixed greens and homemade baguette. I chose the cucumber salad and a pasta salad with goat cheese. Delicious!! $10.95 and perfect serving for lunch. They have wraps- soup- sandwiches- hot dishes too. Okay, okay, so we cannot stay away from this place. The baguettes are the best darn baguettes we've ever had. The breakfasts are excellent and last time we were there, the waitstaff were very friendly, so maybe we'll rethink this little gem - oh! and the raspberry scones are the-best ever. This place is a sweet general-store-meets-upscale-souvenirs kind of place, and it looked perfect for a midday hangout. But we were on a mission--to outfit a picnic across the river--so, unfortunately, we couldn't stay. But onward. The Thanksgiving (think turkey and all the trimmings in panini form) and Cali (turkey, avocado, sprouts in a wrap) sandwiches were delish and very picnic-able. The roast beef, on the other hand, had a problem: Upon unwrapping, a gigantic piece of red pepper slid out of the ciabatta and destroyed a pair of pants. Picnic rating: low. We tried the salmon/pasta salad, which was ok but a little underseasoned. The barley salad with goat cheese and cranberries was better, and pretty to boot. Desserts were big in size, but not overwhelming in deliciousness. Several of them seemed to rely on jam as a flavoring. The cookie with the well of chocolate in the middle was just plain dry. My wife and I come to Simon's Marketplace whenever we're in town to visit her family in East Haddam. It averages out to be maybe 3-4 times per year we end up at Simon's for breakfast, and it's always a good breakfast. You can tell that much of what you're eating is prepared fresh in the restaurant with care. I have an allergy to wheat, I'm not gluten-free (not celiac), but have to avoid wheat. In this day and age, many breakfast spots have caught on to the growing dietary needs of us with wheat allergy, and Celiac, so it always comes as a surprise to me when I find a place that doesn't feel the need to take care of us. After several years of coming to Simon's, holding onto the hope that this will be the time when I ask for GF toast, or a GF breakfast sandwich, and they proudly say, "yes we do!" I think I have finally lost hope, and I think we will seek a more amenable restaurant for breakfast in the area. Get with the times, Simon's, have some gluten free loaves on hand, and offer breakfast for all!!! read more

The salads and meals are available all day as well as coffee and desserts. The cookies are to die for and could feed a whole family as well as the pies. The music is loud and obnoxious. Young wait staff - mostly unsupervised. The food is interesting. Mezze (Italian word for half) plate is excellent - choices of various different salads and other vegetarian foods. Their soups never seem to work - I had the chicken and vegetable soup made with basically kitchen scraps. This place has huge potential - nestled in the beautiful village of Chester. Went to Simons for breakfast this morning. The coffee was REALLY good. I got what I think was a laté with a pump of caramel and extra cream.. yum! It was really good. And I got French toast with a side of bacon and fruit... this is where I was disappointed. My breakfast was not very good. The French toast didn't have much flavor or taste to it and there was not very much powder sugar on it. The bacon tasted old and was cold. And the cooked fruit tasted mushy like baby food. So I was pretty bummed. But my friend got the bacon egg and cheese on sour dough with avocado on it and a side of home fries and she ate the whole thing she loved it! I wish I got what she ordered... if you go here maybe try a sandwich for breakfast... and not the French toast. And definitely get the coffee it's really good! And the seating is really cozy and the staff were also nice. Last side note - downtown Chester is a really cute town, looks like something in a postcard! read more

We stumbled upon this charming establishment using Yelp. It felt like a true community staple. We ordered a thanksgiving sandwich and a piece of meatloaf. The sandwich bread was perfectly grilled. The meatloaf had a sweet chili glaze that gave it flavor but didn't overwhelm. The meatloaf came with a salad and a few pieces of their famous bread, which tasted like a pretzel: buttery, soft, and salty. We ended with a chocolate crinkle cookie. Simons serves the tastiest baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and a tomato and mozzarella sandwich to die for but the downside is the food in the case. I've tried a few different dishes like the potato salad, black bean salsa and pasta with fried artichoke hearts etc but they just aren't very good. I want to like them but they don't seem fresh to the point where I'm questioning how long ago they were prepared. I also noticed a couple of weeks ago that frost was beginning to melt inside the case which was causing the ice to drip onto the food so that was a bit gross. Dedicated sandwich customer to new Westbrook location until Thursday when needed a salad for dinner party - deli case looked awful, some platters looked like food reheated several times - nice young man convinced me to buy Thai slaw -said it was very tasty and better than regular slaw- cost me $20 for coleslaw and it was tasteles and old. Three different people could not figure out how to process my gift card and was in a hurry so just paid cash and left. Called Chester location on Friday and left manager a long message with another nice sounding young man but no return call as of Saturday afternoon. I would taste before you buy!!
