Simple was simply delicious! Bad jokes aside, this place was located in a very touristy area filled with restaurants and boutique hotels, and the food and service were great! My friend and I split the Simple Fish Ceviche (peanuts, chia seeds, serrano peppers, red onions, etc.) and that was so fresh and flavorful! He got the tuna dish which was also great, but my black rice with octopus, calamari, and plantains was seriously A+. The black rice must have been made with squid ink or something but the total combination was a seriously savory seafood dish that was extremely filling and not like anything I've ever had before. I highly recommend getting this dish, but, be warned, it is EXTREMELY filling! After the ceviche and a passionfruit mojito (also delicious), I only had room for half of my entree. Another upside is that many of the staff can speak English. The only downside we had was a weird moment with the check. The receipt said "tip" in Spanish but then had a bolded "No tip included" at the bottom. We also tried paying with card because we didn't have any cash, and the first time around our waiter said the internet was down and he couldn't run the card through. We asked him to try again and it went through that second time. Also, this is a much pricier restaurant than other places in Tulum/Mexico with dishes mostly in the $20 range. Pricing here is like at Tenadie's infamous place in Les Mis: "charge 'em for the lice, extra for the mice, 2% for looking in the mirror twice!" The food is already overpriced, even by Tulum tourist standards. Then adding the posted exchange rate, the cost unexpectedly increases 15%. And they charge an additional 5% for using a credit card. AND there is an automatic gratuity of 15% for any size party, which is insult added on injury for the painfully slow service. If you want outstanding Tulum seafood try EL CAMELLO JR on highway 307. That's where local fishermen sell their FRESH catch DAILY. El Camello is easy to find or reach by taxi, it gets a higher Yelp rating, and the service and prices are honest and friendly. Be aware that El Camello only accepts cash, a testament to its local authenticity and popularity. El Camello was recommended by our concierge when we asked for a seafood recommendation, and it was well worth the 10 min drive. You'll wait a lot longer than that for your food to be served at Simple. If you'd rather eat on the Tulum strip, then just a few yards down the road try Alma Tulum which has equally good food (including grilled seafood), an ocean view, great ambiance, and genuinely warm Mexican hospitality without abusive pricing for unsuspecting tourists. read more

I'm happy to say that this was our last meal in Tulum and it was well worth it! We didn't really know what we wanted on our last night, so we decided to take a drive on the main street. We stayed at Piedra Escondida, so this was a ways down from us. It definitely caught my attention because of how beautifully lit and lively it was. On a side note, Tulum gets very dark at night and has minimal street lights for eco reasons. I enjoy the darkness because all the restaurants become lit at night and brings out a lot of character. I was very happy with this place because they were able to make a passionfruit mojito for my sister and me. It was the best thing ever and I wish they would make it in the states, but not a lot of bars have passionfruit. I love this place even more for making it upon request. They had a few other drinks with passionfruit, so that's why we decided to just ask. Anyway, the food....delicious! We got the butterfish, soft shell crab toast, and some veggies on the side. It was definitely a very light dinner, but a happy last meal. They had lots of fresh catches of the day. Right before we left, we ran into the owner and he was the nicest person. We told him how much we enjoyed his restaurant and will be back for it! They had live music and a woman dancing as entertainment. The table next to us was very intrigued by her. It was a bit too much the way they kept howling at her. Especially when you're trying to enjoy a nice meal! Also, if you have a car, it's pretty difficult to find a good parking spot, so I recommend hopping in a taxi. The taxi prices vary, but always ask how much before getting into one. read more

Came here for dinner while vacationing in Tulum based on Yelp reviews. Believe it! Was after peak season in mid-May so it was pretty quiet. As we walked up to the entrance we were greeted by Richie whom I assume is the owner. He's very friendly and took the time to introduce himself and showed us the catch of the day which was Monkfish. It looked so good that I cast away my usual disdain for white fish. We ordered the "cone" of seafood fritters for starters and ay dios! It was SO good. Lightly battered fresh pieces of shrimp, octopus and whitefish served with aioli, tartar sauce and a whole gang of limes. We split the Monkfish and jumbo prawn entrees. The prawns were split and grilled to perfection, with just the right amount of char and seasoning. YUM. But holy crap, the Monkfish...it was life-changing. Perfect fillet grilled to a char on the outside and super tender in the middle. Served on top of homemade mashed potatoes and nicely grilled fresh veggies. Oh. My. God. Went with a sauce that the waiter recommended, it was so so so delicious. The service was outstanding, they're so friendly and helpful. We didn't have the stones to get drinks, but they had a very nice selection of craft cocktails and a decent wine list. At the end of the meal they treated us to some aperitifs. As we walked back to our hotel, mi novia y yo couldn't help but notice the majority of other vacationers wasting their lives eating wood-fired pizzas at adjacent restaurants. It made us want to openly taunt them, as they were truly missing out. DON'T BE ONE OF THEM! You should go here. Best restaurant in Tulum and one of the best seafood I ever had. The fish is super fresh, the have a catch of the day and every dish has its own signature. We only had the simplemente tuna delicioso (seared tuna sashimi with an incredible green pea puré and zucchini fries) that it was to die for and the best risotto in my life: black rice with octopus and calamari in its own ink with plantains. If it wasn't because the plates were big and we were very full we could order everything in the menu. They have a vast variety of dishes and different fish and seafood. The house offered a complementary sopes that were also a good starter to kill the hunger. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone! Specially if you are in that area were everything is overpriced because of the beauty of Tulum. Everyone in my group enjoyed their fish dishes and thought it was the best dish they had on our trip. There are not many vegetarian/vegan items. They modified the slider dish of 1 Portabella, 1 tuna & 1 beef to come as 3 Portabella for me. Other vegetarian items included the guacamole & sides. My only complaint would be that they did not have a vegetarian main dish. Prices are very reasonable compared to others boca paila rd with similar ambiance & quality. This place is a laid back restaurant with upscale food. As you walk in to this open air restaurant you get a good look at the fresh fish you will soon get to choose from. We were pleasantly greeted and were told to choose any table we wanted (it was an early dinner on a week night and not crowded). I ordered the tuna sashimi appetizer and the Pablo Escobar (butterfish). My wife had the seared ahi tuna dish. My butterfish was succulent. I love butterfish! The tuna tostada had a great mixture of fresh raw tuna, micro greens, and spicy aioli on a freshly made tostada. Great appetizer! My wife said her tuna dish had very bright flavors and she really enjoyed the asparagus fries that accompanied it. Service was very helpful and laid back. Had a great experience at Simple. Someone recommended it to us and we were pleasantly suprised. The chef introduced himself and made sure we were enjoying ourselves. My boyfriend and I both had great classic margaritas with mezcal to drink and they were delicious. We followed that with a shrimp dish (2 coconut shrimp and 2 wrapped in bacon- the chef gave us an extra bacon wrapped shrimp- yum!) that was quite tasty. We also ordered the 3 ceviche and the fresh rock lobster claws. The quality and freshness of the fish was fantastic and we loved our whole meal. We were most excited to eat dinner at Simple and dropped our bags at the hotel and headed immediately out for dinner around 9pm, which is late for Tulum, unfortunately, most of the entrees were no long available, our fault since everything is so fresh and caught daily. I do not have any complaints about the food, it was good. My reason for the lower rating was the service- the restaurant was pretty empty but we barely could get a hold of our server, even to order additional drinks. We didn't get our food until 11pm and were starving by 10pm, asked for more chips and were told they were out of them (only to see another table be brought chips 15 minutes later). Perhaps it was an off night but with so many restaurants in the area they need to make sure their service is at the level of their food. read more

Cute place, but we were a party of 4 people it wasn't busy so I couldn't understand why it took forever to get our food. The server was being nice but after waiting a while he then let's us know they didn't have enough Shrimps. Three of us ordered a entree that had shrimps. So he tried to replace it with other seafood but took forever after that to bring the food. After bringing the food he still forgot a side order we had ask for. I told him not to bring it but he still did and charged it. We where there on a Monday night at 8pm. We literally left the restaurant at 11pm. I was in Tulum for only 4 nights but chose to eat here twice because it was that good. Service was wonderful and hospitable. We had a great conversation with Fleur, the bartender, and Richy, the owner. So welcoming -- it really made the experience. Margaritas were excellent, and the octopus with shrimp mashed potatoes were even better. The second night we were there we had the seafood sampler platter. Everything was extremely fresh and well prepared. It was slow season so we actually were able to pick the lobster we wanted on the platter. I couldn't be happier with this restaurant. I do not know the issues of the people who gave this establishment one star. It is so nice! I have been to Tulum twice, and both times, I enjoyed a meal at Simple. They have a diverse selection of food, ranging from Spanish-style potatoes to Japanese sashimi. The food is absolutely delicious. I would give five stars but there are a couple of factors reducing my amount of stars. The restaurant is located on a jungle road, like Casa Banana, but you barely have a view of the jungle rom the tables, like you do in Casa Banana, which also has excellent food. Also, the restaurant is only lighted by several candles, which is probably supposed to give it a romantic atmosphere, but it just makes it hard to read a book while you are waiting for your food, which brings me t the fact that the service is somewhat slow. Amazing seafood! We got the butter fish and the red snapper and both were incredible. Absolutely scrumptious sides that came with the fish too. You choose your rub/salsa to go with the fish, which is interesting. The place has a slick design and great casual atmosphere. There was even a house dog and cat that came by to visit and I was petting them both at the same time, so cute! Service was friendly and the prices were good for seafood - our meal would easily have cost twice as much in the states. This place definitely deserves more attention in the crowded strip of fancy spots in Tulum, and it easily beat 2 other places we tried. This is the spot for great seafood! read more
