I've been going to Dr. Cook since 1991- I had a MASSIVE overbite, and impacted eye tooth and four…read moreimpacted wisdom teeth. I was an orthodontists dream- my mouth is probably worth upwards of $20,000 at this point for braces and surgeries combined. In '91Dr. Cook had a small practice with four chairs and one or two hygienist assistants but came highly recommended in the neighborhood. Now, almost twenty years later, the office has expanded to eight regular appointment chairs, he's brought in another Doctor and two or three main assistants (I know Laura is one- she's been there at LEAST as long as I have) as well as about ten other assistants. There are two things I can mention about Dr. Cook (fondly, of course) First, he calls everyone "Dear" (he's become known as Dr. Dear in my family). More importantly, however, patients will quickly discover the pride he takes in his work- I recently went back after a seven year hiatus because my permanent lower retainer was causing me gum problems and instead of removing it like I wanted, he encouraged me to do it the right way, preserve the work he did ten years back and got me three sets of invisalign retainers (only charging me for the lab fees) to move those suckers back into place, removed the retainer and put a new model in. He's just good- and takes pride in his work. I was reading one of the articles from Best of Philly hanging in his office (he's been named best ortho for countless years) and this year I noticed he'll turn 60- so I'm curious what his plans for retirement are. I hope that after many years of bring the right people in to work with him the practice will move on in the spirit of his work (especially since my kids will more than likely inherit the snaggle teeth that both me and my husband seem to have...)!

Imagine trusting an orthodontist and they convince your family to pull just one tooth and make your smile so horrifically lopsided and mess up your bite so bad, that you have to go through braces again. One side of my mouth is much wider than the other side and higher than the other side, because he pulled one tooth. My midline is shifted and I have a cross bite, because the arch of my top teeth is lopsided. With my lips closed, my lips even look lopsided. I was told by three different orthodontists that they would have recommended jaw surgery, not have removed just one healthy tooth. Every time I look in the mirror, I'm reminded that I will forever have a lopsided smile, thanks to him. As a woman of color, I felt unheard, taken advantage of and manipulated.

Took time off from work in order to have a new pt appt at Advanced Family Dentistry. Met directly…read moreby the dentist and hygienist who were friendly and quickly took several X-rays as a baseline. Dentist said that I needed to get my old fillings replaced as they were "leaking" and could be further damage. I had a dentist verbalize this to me previously as something that may come up in the future so I wasn't too alarmed. "We aren't doing anything today, we will schedule you for two appointments in the future where we can replace these old ones and we will clean your teeth then". I felt a little surprised and suddenly rushed and wish I had said something then, but didn't. It didn't feel right. What I find disappointing in hindsight is that my X-ray results were never reviewed with me, that absolutely nothing was done the first appointment even though I had taken time off to be there and the expectation that I will take even more time off for these services. If nothing else I felt like my time was not respected; the time I had to take off from work, to get there, and then schedule additional appointments. If this is how they run things then it should be clarified that the first appointment is a "CONSULTATION" and that it is likely that no work will take place. I suspect they make a little extra by breaking up the visits this way and that may be the motivation behind it or the doctor was running behind and punted.

I came to Dr. Hinebaugh for a supposedly FREE consultation for implants. Once I sat down with Dr. Hinebaugh, he asked me to explain what's going on with my teeth. I did, and he said I would need a CT scan. I told him that I was hoping not to have a CT scan (since I have had an unusually large number of X-rays and scans to my mouth lately); and that I brought a thumb drive which should have my scans and X-rays on it. With a raised, annoyed voice, he told me that the thumb drive didn't have a reader on it and that he couldn't open it. (It was a thumb drive that I received from my regular dentist.) So I said, "If I have the CT scan, will there be a charge for it?" He looked at me with a very annoyed scowl, and said, "No." I said, "Well, from the look on your face, I can see that you won't be happy with that (not charging me for the CT scan)." He asked me what his website said. I mentioned it stated "free consultations", and I was going to mention that one of his forms indicated having to pay for a CT scan ONLY if you wanted a copy of it ($400), but he cut me off and raised his voice again and said, "A free consultation doesn't include X-rays!" (Maybe his website should explain that!!) Then, with a great amount of annoyance, he said, "Well what do YOU want, Nancy?" I knew that he and I would not have a pleasant doctor/patient relationship, so I said, "I think I should just take my thumb drive and leave." He grabbed all the forms I filled out, violently ripped them up as he was saying, "We wont be needing these!" And he threw them in the trash; half of them flying on the floor. He stormed away from me, leaving me to try to figure out how to get back to the front desk, with no easily visible "Exit" signs. Having no sense of direction, I accidentally wandered in the wrong direction, and he came back and, with his raised voice, said to me, "This way, Nancy -- the same way you came in!" (Like I was an idiot.) I picked up the thumb drive at the front desk and left. After leaving, I realized that he had thrown away my forms in his regular trash can. Those forms had my personal information on them, including my Social Security number. I was so upset by that time, but I went back anyway and asked for the forms that he had thrown in his trash. They gave me most of the pieces of my papers, and I left. I should point out that the next dentist I went to WAS able to open the thumb drive and see what was on there. What a horrible, unpleasant experience I had with this dentist.

After moving away, I started to use others, however those other dentists were always sending me elsewhere for root canals and such. Dr. Hinebaugh maintains all of his certifications needed, so everything can be done under one roof with expert care. I also respect his keen eye for detail, so when does a bridge or implants, they look completely natural, not like some over whitened veneers.
