I read all the favorable reviews before going, but this was not a good dinner. The steak was overcooked and over-salted (to the point of tasting like a brick of salt). There was a "risotto" side dish that was really just rice with some cheese dumped on top, and the mashed potatoes (which should be a high point at a steakhouse) were bland and dry. Our server was a nice fellow and trying, but the service (and the food) didn't come anywhere near what should have been the case for the price point. We were celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary for my in-laws, and they also were very disappointed. We didn't even want to try dessert. I have no plans to ever return. It was a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty, so it seems like I am not the only one to come to this conclusion. read more

As part of our anniversary weekend, we dined at Sinclair's in West Baden Springs Hotel. It's a classic upscale steakhouse and the experience was worth the price. My husband had one of the house specialties, filet mignon, which was perfectly prepared. The vegetarian in the pair, I carb-splurged on wild mushroom fettuccine with an interesting port cream sauce that added a little sweetness. And who can resist tableside-prepared flaming desserts? When we came in to eat there were only a couple other tables inside. We ordered a couple appetizers. The fried green tomatoes are fabulous. Someone else at our table had the ravioli appetizer and it was literally one ravioli. The bread was delicious and hot. We all ordered our food. It did take a very long time for the food to come like other reviewers mentioned. The server did not acknowledge the length of time we had waited. We also had noted people around us had been waiting awhile. When we asked what was taking so long he said it was the chicken. Our food did finally come out. The chicken was just the breast. I had the filet which was delicious. Cooked perfect. Served with carrot crisps on top. I had the side of mashed potatoes which were delicious as well. They replaced it & still very salty. Not a $72 experience. I ordered the scallops with risotto & asparagus. Again, the scallops were salty. The risotto tasted like it was cooked in Campbell's tomato soup. Not good at all. I think the price for the scallops dinner was close to $40 Nice wine list. And my husband's cocktail was excellent. Not really into fine dining but I felt it was necessary to add to our French Lick experience. Everything from the service to the food was excellent. Actually have nothing bad to say about the food or anything. Everything was tasty and well proportioned. We ordered a round of lobster bisques and the oysters to start. Both excellent. As for the mains, my mom and I split a seafood noodle dish. My one sister ordered steak and mushroom risotto. The steak was one of THE most tender I've ever tasted. It melted in your mouth it was so good. The risotto wasn't great imo, but I also don't love risotto because of the texture, so I'm sure it was good if you like risotto. And my other sister ordered some kind of indian dish. She was pretty hesitant about ordering it but it ended up being delicious. Can't remember what it was called though! read more

Previous evenings were corner & wall seating when they were not so busy. Was told when making reservation it was formal attire - many patrons with jeans, ball caps an hoodies. This is fine dining. Everything about Sinclair's has a touch of class. If you are looking for a quick bite to eat at a low cost, this is not the place. The whole meal, with dessert, took two hours -- as it should. If you are paying more than $50 for a steak, you should take the time to enjoy it. I did. I had the New York strip steak. It was cooked perfectly. If I had a complaint, it was just on the edge of being salty. My vegan wife had the stuffed baby eggplant without the cheese. The focaccia was a little burnt, but just barely. I also had the local mushroom risotto, which was excellent. For dessert, we had the bananas Foster. It is an expensive dessert and it's for two. It is worth every penny. Bananas Foster is my favorite dessert. I've had good ones, I've had bad ones. This was the best. The staff was great. The waitress didn't seem too happy, but she was very good to us. If you have the time and the money, go to Sinclair's. read more

The in house fine dining experience at West Baden Hotel. As soon as you walk in you realize this is no ordinary restaurant. The restaurant is a extravagant as the hotel itself. The beauty of the dining hall is absolutely breathtaking. No ordinary dining Hall to say the least. The meal started out with a lovely appetizer of scallops, which were VERY large and tasted like pure heaven. They have a outstanding wine list to choose from. The menu is orginal and has a nice selection to choose your meal from. The service was fantastic. The servers work together as a team. So your glass is unlikely to be empty before you have a fresh refill. Everyone was very nice and had only our satisfaction in mind. We were more than satisfied. Remarkably overpriced. Beautiful location, and I expect the hotel restaurant price bump, but I also expect some justification for it. First, complimentary bread was below par. Ciabatta rolls should have a nice chew, but these were actually stale and crusty around the edges, and heavily salted. No olive oil and pepper served with the bread. Basic fare on the menu and platinum prices on the wine. Entrees start around $30 and move far north. Filet mignon north of $50. Mind, this doesn't include any sides! Those run an extra $10. We had the penne divola, salmon filet, broccolini, and rice. Penne pasta had a few kernels of sweet corn tossed in it to no effect. Otherwise, an entree completely devoid of vegetables. Rice was quite good with the salmon, otherwise unremarkable. No drinks, no salads or starters, no dessert. $75 bill. This same meal could have been had at your suburban Cheesecake Factory for $40. Would have paid $50 at a nice joint in DC. Ballard's in the same hotel actually serves better food at more reasonable prices. If we had ordered more at Sinclair's and our bill pushed pass three digits, I would expect this would have been a one star review. Search elsewhere for lavish dining in southern Indiana. read more

Shrimp Pepperdelle was sub standard for an upscale hotel restaurant; contained 1/3 cup to 1/2 cup of capers......way too many capers for any meal . We had reservations for Sinclair on Valentines Day. Looking at the price point and menu, we expected a nice experience. Our waiter didn't come and greet us until 10-15 min after we were seated. We saw him briefly 25 min later when he delivered a drink to our table after my husband had received his drink minutes prior. We didn't see our waiter after that. We did receive our salads and appetizer about 30 min after we ordered but no one cleared our plates or come to check on us. An hour and a few min after we ordered we asked to talk to a manager. We told her about our issues and never apologized and said she'd get our check! This was by far a very discouraging and very disappointing experience. You expect good customer service esp at a high price place like this. No apologies? Nothing offered . Poor service. read more

Why, oh why must hotel restaurants be so disappointing? We paid over $200 for a very mediocre dinner here and I will not make the same mistake again. They were out of Prosecco, which was very sad since we were celebrating an anniversary. Ordered shrimp as an appetizer and received 3 small shrimp for $20. Entree portions were also small, with all side dishes ordered a la carte. Dishes were very boring and uninspired with no garnish. Our server appeared to be 1/2 asleep and mumbled at us every couple of minutes. This place feels a bit like a trap because you want to have a nice dinner while staying at such a lovely hotel, but it's really not worth it. A new chef or creative menu would be much appreciated to save this place from the expensive blandness. I'll save my $200 for restaurants that actually make an effort for my business. read more

I ordered the sea bass and it was awful! It had more fat than a piece of fried fish. Instead of searing it lightly, they dropped it in a deep fryer. Not only was the fish a dark, crusted brown, but there was a pool of grease that it, along with the vegetables was sitting in. It was not even edible. I expected the waiter to take the $60 piece of fried fish, that they referred to as sea bass off my bill. He only offered a free dessert. Due to the fact that I am trying to cut sugar and fried foods from my diet, I declined the offer. I will never eat at another French Lick property again. It is amazing how much the food has declined, at all of them, over the last few years. read more

We were extremely excited to try Sinclair's for dinner this evening. The atmosphere was lovely and the serving staff seemed great. However, our food took well over an hour to arrive, we had missing items once it did arrive, then didn't receive those missing items until we were almost finished with our meal. We made the most of it and tried not to worry too much, but we're disheartened that our server seemed to pretty much avoid us most of the evening and never apologized for the delay. For the $200 we spent, we're used to getting excellent service at similar places. No matter how good the food is, if the service is subpar...it really dampens the experience. read more

On a girls weekend to West Baden we splurged and had nice dinner. The ambiance was wonderful and the service was top notch and friendly. As far as the food, the lobster bisque was absolutely amazing. It was truly the best I ever had! With a surprising amount of lobster in the large bowl, it was rich, thick and luxurious. Served with some gluten free bread, the gf bisque was a perfect meal. This was the pinnacle evening of our whirlwind three day vacay! the atmosphere here was top notch, the food was flavorful, exquisite and vibrant. our server, was a wonderful ginger from Latvia that was a tribute to her profession. their "blackened fish " ended up being crab cake. i mentioned to our server that we had cancelled reservations at another place for "blackened fish"..but not crab cakes. she checked with the chef, and they said...SALMON? NO PROBLEM! indeed! our appetizer, shrimp cocktail.. were BIG AS A BABYS ARM! our main courses spot on. we could taste every nuance and flavor! for desert, we had the banana flambè ice cream. Meal was good but not great- portions, prices and flavor all a little disappointing in the appetizer and entree. The sides we tried- asparagus and risotto- were much more satisfying. Dessert was cute (chocolate dome) but served a little too cold for my taste, this made it somewhat difficult to eat. A table next to us was very rude. I wish a manager had walked over and explained to them that they weren't the only guests in the restaurant that evening. There were at least 7 other tables who had to listen to their obnoxious phone calls during their (and everyone's) meals. read more

This was our second visit to Sinclair's. We were surprised that the entrées were served ala carte - no vegetable or starch accompaniment and very pricey. We both ordered the French style chicken breast and a side of asparagus almandine. The chicken was excellent. However the asparagus we're not properly prepared. This asparagus was quite thick and tough. When asparagus is this thick the outer skin is usually peeled off revealing the tender core. They did not do this and the asparagus was tough and bitter. We brought this to the attention of our server and she replaced it with excellent mashed potatoes. In my experience, when a complaint of this nature occurs, the manager will come by and try to appease the customer - usually comping a dessert or something of that nature. But no not here. So you will pay a lot for good food - but not a good value for what you get. Be prepared to spend well over $120 for a dinner for two and that it is splitting an appetizer, two entrées and sharing a vegetable dish, two glasses of one of the lower priced wines and a dessert. read more

I am spare with the stars generally but West Baden really won me over. I loved the quality of the food in the main restaurant, called Sinclair's. They had early reservations available for dinner even last minute and accommodated us with a window large enough to allow my friend and I to observe a few local deer just on the edge of the hotel's woods as we dined. Simply unreal, but made us think of the scene in "Funny Farm" where the owners paid locals to release a deer on queue in order to impress visitors. The wine selection was decent tho a few food items and beverages were unavailable. If they would add and maintain an herb garden on the grounds and started a country organic farm breakfast/lunch/dinner/brunch regimen, they would become legendary. :) read more

Dave and I came here our first night in the hotel. I'm glad I didn't listen to the front desk, who told me 'resort casual' was the attire- definitely dress up when coming here or you WILL feel out of place! We went all out on our meal and it was fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the butter for our rolls tasted as if it had been frozen- you know, that gross freezer taste. We decided to order a bottle of wine, and were happy to see a large variety of both wines and price ranges. We opted for a bottle of Riesling on the lower end of the price range and both loved it (we're not super into wine). We started with gouda ravioli, which was amazing. My entree was the sea bass, while Dave ordered their blackened crab stuffed trout. Both were good, but I certainly preferred mine. We also ordered a side of asparagus, which came out as a generous portion. For dessert, we shared the white chocolate macadamia nut cheese cake, which was HUGE. Dave and I had trouble finishing it. Sinclair's was really the perfect way to start our vacation. It was just the right amount of decadence without being pretentious or overly pricey. read more

Sinclair's is the fine dining restaurant at the West Baden Springs Hotel in French Lick. We didn't plan on eating here but the restaurant at our hotel had a refrigerator failure and the food went bad. The staff at Sinclair's was great, they were very attentive and wanted to make our experience special. While this is a fine dining place, we were in Indiana, and there was a hillbilly in coveralls next to us. Now just because he was a hillbilly didn't mean he wasn't a perfect gentleman, he definitely was. But his out of place appearance was totally accepted and respected by the staff. The food was very good. Everything was well seasoned and flavorful. We had a banana's flambe for desert that was good (even though the waiter struggled a little). I had a NY strip that was done perfectly rare and my wife had a table cut chicken dish that was perfectly cooked and very moist. I would recommend this place with out a doubt. read more

Fantastic fine dining! I had the filet. Request Arnie as your server. Also, you must see "Table One." This room is for private dining and is one of the coolest things I've seen. Not only is the china extremely expensive Versace, but one wall is glass and overlooks the kitchen. It has this sci-fi privacy feature that "clouds" the interior glass if you no longer want to watch the bustling kitchen beyond. I regret to deduct one point because wine prices are more than triple retail. If it was not for these outrageous wine prices, I would have given Sinclair's five stars. I've decided to take a stand and deduct one star when I review restaurants if they gouge customers on wine prices; it really is insulting. So consider this a five-star review with a star deducted for the wine prices. Even though Sinclair's has a very impressive wine list, the wine prices are outrageous! My wife and I went to Sinclair's last night. We have decided that we are food snobs as we have eaten at some spectacular restaurants and this one miserably left us feeling empty and full of despair. On a positive point, the decor was what I would expect for a fine dining restaurant. Super tall ceilings with tables and chairs fit for a king. The place settings were impeccable and we were excited to be there. However...that's where it stopped. The price point for the menu items put it in the range for other fine dining restaurants so I put it in the same category for other restaurants of this caliber in the region. The server began by reading the specials off of her paper instead of knowing it like she should. She was extremely slow and inattentive throughout the meal. My wife's risotto was so salty that a deer would rather eat that than suck on a salt lick. Per our server's recommendation I got the double boned pork chop. Nice size although it came out so rare and undercooked I was certain this would be my last meal as I would meet the same fate as the animal that I'm eating. For a restaurant to have a price point as high as this then the service and food should be impeccable. Maybe that's me being a snob but for $150++ for two people then I expect something a little more superior than the subpar server who was inadequately trained on service and the food that was not even close to other steakhouses and fine dining restaurants in the Louisville area. We had a lovely bachelorette brunch here. I enjoyed an omelette with fresh goat cheese and spinach. It came with a side potato casserole. The omelette was light and airy and I should have chosen a lighter side dish, as the casserole was heavy. They were both very tasty and well prepared. The service was okay. In such a fine dining establishment I would have expected a bit better service. We had to have tables moved together because we were a large group. They put a round table with a square table, which made an awkward sitting arrangement for a couple of people who were stuck in the weird crack. There were plenty of tables available, so I was surprised they didn't just put two square tables together. I know it seems odd to complain about, but it made for awkward conversations and talking to the back of people's heads, etc. food was great. read more

We came to West Baden Springs Hotel for two nights to play golf at the Pete Dye Course, and were not expecting to enjoy the spectacular cuisine that Sinclair's served up. Our first night we picked Sinclair's mostly because we weren't inclined to investigate other local options. However, the manager, Derek Miller, was incredibly gracious and helpful and steered us through some wonderful food and wine choices. The seafood we enjoyed was wonderfully fresh, and prepared with care and creativity. Our servers were attentive without being intrusive. The room is a bit dated, and the high ceilings seems to give the dining room a spaciousness that precludes intimacy. Based on our experience, we opted to seek out Derek & Co. the next night - just to confirm that our wonderful experience the night before wasn't a one-off. Our meal the second night was again spot-on perfect. The restaurant's wine list isn't deep, but it's thoughtful and broad. Derek personally prepared his own take on Bananas Foster table side -- the classic preparation laced with citrus, bespeaking his Caribbean roots. Sinclair's is not inexpensive for the geography, but well worth putting on your must-do list! read more
