Perhaps I'm a bit jaded, but I didn't expect much from this place, situated in a tourist destination. After navigating the charming but challenging rural byways-- which included horse-drawn buggies and flooded out roads--tourists from the north deserve a good meal when they arrive, and they will get one. My lunch companion chose a Reuben, which was served on delicious dark rye bread, along with a cup of fresh fruit. Yes fresh, not commercially prepared. I chose the 1/2 soup and sandwich. Flavorful tomato basil soup and half of a club on focacia? I believe. That was a little difficult to eat, but it tasted good. I chose French fries with mine, which were hot and plentiful. We both had iced tea which was fresh and good but we were never offered a refill. Service was efficient but not super attentive. The snack mix that arrived with water when we sat down was a nice touch. Oh, and did I mention the atmosphere in which we dined? Only the 8th wonder of the world. See it for yourself. A popular restaurant with moderate prices. Located in the spacious, open atrium area of West Baden Springs Hotel, its more casual than Sinclair's which is a first class establishment. A nice variety of sandwiches, salads and entrees. Service was very good and prices were in line with this type of establishment - not inexpensive but not too bad, all things considered. The soup was delicious, the fries well cooked but bland. The views are beautiful. The service...well it is absolutely why I won't be coming back. After I sat and was greeted as a party of one, I heard two servers behind my back at their service station arguing over who would serve me....it made me feel so uncomfortable. The server that ended up taking my table came up without any kind of greeting and just looked at me and said "what would you like". After I ordered, I realized I wanted a side of fries and when they finally came by to ask how everything was they REEKED of cigarette smoke. We had a large party (14 including a few little kids) and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The lone server was very attentive both early and during our meal. For context, this was a hugely busy time - eclipse brought tons of people to the resort. Despite being packed, we never felt left alone or had to wait long for water/beverage refills, orders, etc. The food was solid. Cobb salad with chicken was fresher than I would have expected. It's not gourmet fare but decent pub-type food. Had dinner there last night. Nice place, poor food priced exceptionally high. My wife had shrimp and grits and said it was fine. I had penned pasta with chicken and it was not fine. They didn't salt the water for the pasta, the sauce wasn't seasoned very well and there was almost no chicken. I ordered a Yeungling and had to ask for a glass after the handed me a bottle. This place presents it's self as something it's not. The shrimp and grits, pasta, 1 beer, and 1 drink over $110. Thank God I didn't feel like a steak. A good dinner with a great view! We were visiting the area for the first time and knew we wanted to stop here so we could enjoy the atrium while we ate. We dined in fairly early and sat ourselves. The staff were there right away bringing water, snack mix, and menus. All the staff were friendly and super prompt. I had the chicken salad sandwich with fruit and it was delicious. My brother had the signature burger. He ordered it medium, it came out well done but he still enjoyed it. It was our Anniversary so we decided to return to where we went on our Honeymoon. The Atrium wasn't open at that times since it is such a charming place we decided to eat lunch there. I very glad we did. They have a very nice variety of choices on the menu. We started with a glass of wine and the June drink special which were both very tasty. Then we got an order of French Onion Soup and the Club Sandwich with fries. Absolutely delicious. Our server, Amanda was one of the best we've ever had. She was very attentive and made sure everything was just right for us. The Atrium is gorgeous and the ceiling is spectacular. We hope to come back later this year for a nice weekend stay. We decided to make a day trip to the French Lick casino and need a meal before heading home so we decided to visit Ballard's for some yummy food. On this particular day the view of the atrium was beautiful with the soft afternoon sun and background music. The service was prompt and friendly. Our server was helpful and attentive. We started with cocktails and crunchies and had a late afternoon lunch. We both had the club sandwich but I had the half sandwich with a cup of French onion soup. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty and my French onion soup was rich and delicious. With great service, atmosphere, cocktails, and food it's definitely a great stop. If you have the time and great weather visit the grounds too. The flower garden is beautiful and a nice photo op. They sometimes have a trolley that runs between French Lick and West Baden and it's a nice ride between the venues but it wasn't working today. read more

I stopped by for a salad to take out after a spa treatment. I wanted something light and quick. The order took about 30 minutes which was not unexpected given the busy holiday weekend, no biggie. However when I got my $35 salad up to my room and opened the box the salad was more like iceberg lettuce soup in way too much dressing. It was soo over done and goopy I could hardly eat it! The restaurant is a lovely setting for drinks, just pass on the over priced, subpar food! Disappointing for sure. read more

This is a restraunt located in the West Baden Springs Resort. There is an a cool little bar that is attached to the restraunt that you can belly up to or take a dring from and sit in any of the many chairs and love seats located in the rotunda. The space there is really amazing as are the accoustics. As we sat down in the atrium seating, we were accompanied by the very talented pianist, Monika Herzig. Her music was fantastic and helped to create a delightful ambiance in the rotunda. She filled the air with improvisational takes of some of the great jazz standards that transported me to the various places in time where those songs held sway. Not long after being seated, our waiter Devon, came by and facilitated a pleasant dining experience. We both ordered the Classic Ballard's Burger, with wagyu beef medium rare, and I wanted all the trimmings. We had recently had one of the best steak dinners at the sister resort's resort's restaurant and didn't want to alter that experience with another steak experience so soon, so we went for more casual fare but still wanted to elevate that a bit. Each burger came with a fries or chips option, but there was flexibility and accommodation for altering your order to your preferences without a touch of pretention. Other things on the menu looked equally scrumptious but we were spreading our short time in French Lick around to get a feel for the flavor of the whole place. I recommend going to this eatery if you are staying a the resort, or if you are just passing through. The space alone is what made this restaurant so special, but the staff and food backed that up with great taste and service. Definitely a one not to be missed if you are even remotely in the area, or a good enough reason to make this a destination location. read more

I mean, you're kind of between a rock and a hard place when you're staying at West Baden Hotel or French Lick Hotel. The town is tiny and there aren't many restaurant options, so if you're hungry and you're staying at West Baden, Ballard's in the Atrium is probably one of your only choices for a decent sit-down meal. That being said, the service is excellent here, and totally makes up for the so-so food. The food that we got wasn't bad at all, but it's super expensive and I'm not entirely sure it's worth the price. It's like Applebee's but twice the price, basically. We ate here twice, though, because like I said, we didn't have very many options. But the sweet potato bisque was good (super rich and creamy), as was their house cabernet sauvignon. I got the pad thai, which was an unusual option on the menu considering everything else was American food. But I got it because sometimes you just need something that's not American, you know? The pad thai was good and warm and filling. They have a kids menu with about seven different options, including mac and cheese, grilled cheese, cheeseburgers, chicken tenders and mini corn dogs. Your typical kiddy food, and you get a choice of either fries, potato chips or apple sauce. Beverages do not come with the kids meal. This restaurant is located within the dome of West Baden Hotel, so it's a nice place to sit and enjoy a meal while you people-watch. On weekend evenings, there is a live jazz band that plays music. read more

They cooked it perfectly. Chicken salad sandwich was ok. The flavor was off. The chips were fresh. I liked his fries better. I would have ordered his burger if I had a do over. I wanted the pasta but they didn't serve it until 5pm. Dessert - brownie sundae and hummingbird cake! I loved my sundae. The restaurant is located in the giant dome room of the hotel and the location is a site to be seen. The service was great and I'd recommend the vodka penne pasta meal. Annually, we try to experience the holiday lights and decorations at French Lick and West Baden. It was especially special this year after missing the 2020 season. This year's experience was made very special by a very extraordinary young man that was our server at Ballards in the Atrium of West Baden by the name of Austin. The quality of the cocktails and food were on point as is to be expected at this high end venue. However, the quality of service as been a mixed bag in the past years. HOWEVER, ON THIS VISIT AUSTIN PROVIDED US THE MOST EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE WE HAVE HAD IN TWENTY YEARS AT THE RESORTS. Yes, he was a very professional and knowledgeable server of Ballards. This young man is a native of French Lick and grew up near Larry Bird's home place. His knowledge and ability to communicate the history of the area and resorts were gifts we never expected. He explained the gratitude the community has for what the Cook family did for Orange County, Indiana. His knowledge of the history of the area back to the 1800's reflected his pride. I salute Austin for his love and pride in his community. I salute the French Lick/West Baden resort for employing such an asset of the area. When visiting West Baden Springs, visit Ballards and ask for Austin. You will not be sorry. Also, make sure you save room to share a piece of Ballard's Hummingbird Cake. During a getaway to French Lick, we needed some dinner. As we were staying in the West Baden Springs Hotel, Ballard's seemed like a convenient option. It was convenient, but so much more. Our server, Juan, went above and beyond, making sure our water glasses were full, the snack mix was refilled (multiple times - we were very hungry), and offered truthful and useful suggestions regarding the menu. Based on his recommendations I ordered the roasted garlic hummus (which arrived with an entire head of roasted garlic, and I ate it all), and the tomato basil bisque (which was truly inspired). The other members of our party enjoyed their choices as well, including a generous slice of hummingbird cake. Juan was attentive, but not hovery, and played a large part in the enjoyment of our dining experience. We dined here on our first night. The atrium is beautiful and they have music playing in the evenings. I was also excited to start collecting stamps for the French Lick Resort Bourbon Tour. You collect 4 stamps at different restaurants and receive a gift at the front desk. I started with the Forbidden Bliss which had Bourbon and Peach Schnapps. It was really good. My mistake was not reading the Bourbon Trail map. I thought you could just order a Bourbon drink and get stamped. You have to order the specific item listed for that restaurant to get the stamp. The drink for Ballard's is Under the Big Top. We stopped in another night to get this specific drink for our last stamp. It was very good. I had my heart set on the West Baden Signature Chocolate Dome for dessert so I decided to order an appetizer so I wouldn't be too full. I started with the Chicken Quesadilla. It was delicious. I then shared the Chocolate Dome with my husband. It was so delicious and worth every calorie. I loved it. I highly recommend eating here if staying at the resort. The atmosphere is wonderful. Let's be honest, you're eating here for the ambience, not the food. Ordered "take out" -food order placed, packaged to-go style. For how busy it was (first weekend in December), it was ready within 20 minutes. Daughters and I were lounging in the atrium enjoying the Christmas decor and live music, so ate our meals at one of the many appropriately spaced tables. I had chorizo pizza, oldest had a club sandwich, youngest had a burger. Prices were typical hotel prices, a bit on the higher side: each meal priced around $17. Pizza was a pre-made crust, cheese and toppings tasted good, not the greatest, but not horrible either. Club was rated "OK", burger rated "really good". I also had cocktails, again, not the greatest, but not the worst. We didn't want to leave the gorgeous atrium, so Ballard's served our dinner needs adequately. Would I eat here again? Yes, but also keeping in mind it's not going to be amazing food. If you'd like a better dining experience, I HIGHLY recommend the hotel's tea service that also takes place in the atrium. Recently stayed at West Baden with my son. Food options on-site are limited to a fancy steakhouse, to-go coffeeshop snacks, and this place. The first night we were there, the wait for a Ballard's table at dinner was over an hour, so we opted to head over to the French Lick property for pizza instead. The second night, we put our names in for a table after swimming, went upstairs to change, and were seated right away when we came back down. The ambiance in the atrium is fantastic. Food wise, I was very pleased with my Wagyu burger, cooked perfectly medium well just as I'd asked with great flavor and fresh garnishes. The fries were good, too. My kiddo liked his chicken tenders and chips as well. We also got a small dish of party mix to snack on while we waited for our entrees to arrive.
