I love paint nite…read more HOWEVER. I went once with artist Rich Seidman at Molly Spilanes. He was full of fun energy and smiles and made the night go smoothly. He instructed easily and I learned good techniques. Even though the "class" is just for fun and not necessarily to learn, I go for the painting, and Rich gave a great class. We looked forward to paint nite again with him as the artist. I went a second time, again to Molly Spilanes. I love the venue and the area, and chose a different picture - red fall leaves or something. On the paint nite site, the artist should have been Rich again, but instead was Andrea. Maybe she is under pressure from college and whatnot, but her energy was negative. The group was fantastic and my painting came out OK, but there were lots of things I didn;t enjoy and will probably avoid a class if she is the instructor. However, I emailed paint nite because if this is common, booking with one artist and then arriving to find another artist instructing the class, I may avoid paint nite for a short while. The class started late. It should have been 7pm, but it started at 730pm~ish. Her tone just seemed harsh. Now, i am not all puppies and sunshine myself, but we're there to have fun. The instruction went OK, but we were towards the back and couldn't see that she had painted anything on a canvas to show us - she didn't point it out or hold it up, so we couldn't see above the rows ahead of us. We struggled with technique. I also noticed - she took liberty and changed her interpretation of the painting we chose online - she said she liked spring better than fall - but I hadn't realized until I went online at the paint nite and saw the painting was changed. I was wondering why it didn't look like what we signed up for. That's fine, because I still came home with a painting I did myself, but I would have liked to see the painting that we chose and then *I* could interperet it how *I* wanted since *I* was the one paying for the class. At the end, around 9pm, she started talking about how she knows who gives her bad reviews because she can remember our faces (this had to be in jest, but still - not cool), and that if we give her less than a 10 in our survey, she'll lose her 5 star rating. And she'll know who it was because if we come back again she'll remember. Ok. Then she pointed out the tip jar, and not to feel obligated but she does have student loans. Well, I do too! The way the class ended - her yelling about giving her a good rating and soliciting tips - made me realize it's important to know who will be the artist and to know ahead of time what to expect. I hope she does well on her finals because maybe she was stressed, but I do go for the painting. I would do this again in the future but in a different venue or borough. We based the decision for this specific paint nite on the venue, the artist, and the painting. and we only left 100% pleased with the venue.

We booked a premium, full-service package for a team-building afternoon, but instead of relaxing, my team spent the entire time stressing, moving boxes, and cleaning up after the staff we hired. We aren't trying to be difficult clients; we simply wanted the service we paid for. Instead, we faced a massive burden: The setup was chaotic and late: For a group our size, the policy is a 40-80 minute setup window. The facilitator didn't show up until 1:33 PM for a 2:00 PM start. Her assistant didn't arrive until after the event started. We were left watching the clock, wondering if our event was even going to happen. We had to manage their logistics: The assistant arrived late and without ID. Since we are in a secure office building, she couldn't get in. Instead of the vendor handling this, my team had to stop what they were doing, leave the event space, and go down to the lobby to retrieve her and haul up the supplies she was carrying. Dismissive attitude: Mistakes happen, but the facilitator's attitude made it worse. She was dismissive about being late and shockingly unhelpful regarding her own assistant's supplies. At one point, when asked about the materials her assistant brought, she refused to help, telling us she "couldn't hang onto that." It felt like we were imposing on her, rather than the other way around. My team did the physical labor: Because they were so behind, the setup wasn't done until 2:30 PM--30 minutes into our paid time. To save the event, my colleagues and I had to step in and physically unpack boxes, set up stations, and distribute materials. We paid for a full-service event but ended up doing the heavy lifting ourselves. Contract issues: We paid extra for the "all new supplies" option so our team could keep their materials. Despite this, the facilitator packed up and took many of the paints and brushes back with her. They walked out on the mess: Despite the event starting late due to their tardiness, the facilitator refused to stay a minute past 4:00 PM. She started aggressively cleaning up while people were still painting, then bolted out the door right at 4:00, leaving us to finish the cleanup and break down the boxes. I cannot recommend this vendor. We paid for a fun, stress-free afternoon and instead received a chaotic experience where we had to work as the setup and cleanup crew.

All materials were provided, even aprons to protect your clothes; instructions length was about 2.5 hrs but we stayed 30 more minutes taking pictures and chilling right after class. Music was good and we were allowed to give suggestions and even use our own playlist via Bluetooth. Instructor was painting step by step and we jus mimic the step she does, she makes painting so easy that's you would think you can do fine art for a living The paint they use don't have any heavy smell and it dries fast, it's water based and that makes it really easy at the end for you to carry your masterpiece home without making a mess. I recommend this place, for birthday parties even children and family gatherings, it's such a cool thing to do; very therapeutic.

So when the place is full or there's a lot of kids, it can be noisy. But it's too be expected. There's also a couple small dogs in the store. They keep to themselves. They had a decent selection of pottery to choose from. However, I think we wished there was a little more. We wanted to paint some of the marvel characters that we saw in a picture and also saw as a finished product on the shelf, but they were sold out. It's $8 to sit and then the price of the pottery on top of it. It's not cheap, but you're paying for the entertainment of it, the experience and memories, as well as, bringing home a one of a kind painted pottery. Additionally, there's a credit card fee if you pay with credit card. So I opted to pay in cash. Owners/staff are friendly. The staff offered suggestions on how to start painting (e.g. sketching out my design with a pencil first). But be patient, the owners have broken English. It didn't bother me, but I could see how it may be frustrating for others. Overall, we had a nice time at Mud Genius.

Sadly it was a frustrating experience and I am left wondering if it's this place only functions when the wife of the husband/wife team is at the helm. When she appeared she at least made an effort at customer friendliness. We went in on a weekday. I asked for an ice cream bowl. The husband's owner pointed to the shelves. I said I looked and could he help. He pointed to them again. No help. Sigh. I pick out a big item for my 8-year-old. We sit down. He proceeds to lecture my kid on using a big brush so he will finish faster. Is fast the goal here? It was overbearing and he didn't get any social cues to back off. More people come in -- a 5 and 8-year-old. He insists they sit together even though there's plenty of space because as he says: "this way I don't have to keep walking back and forth." It's a small shop people. Now we are crowded next to a 5-year-old who has ants in his pants and is ready to climb the walls. Relaxing it was not. Then there's the dog, which they keep in the store. I don't mind dogs, but some do. One such customer said her kid was afraid and could they put the dog away. He is put in the back only to keep coming back out or yap. Now we have to listen to the drama unfolding. But, I think the final straw, after enduring all this was that when I asked for a fine point brush because all the brushes out had bristles that were worn out I was informed customers ruined them so that's what they had. The message here: We can't have nice things and neither can you. I get kids are the main customers but it's an art shop and I KNOW brushes are not that expensive that you can't keep some aside for adults who are trying to do some more detailed work. So, no, it wasn't much fun, and it was sure as hell not relaxing. We won't be back.
