Our Story: We had acquired a 4 month old rescue puppy that had been neglected, attention deprived and under stimulated. So you can imagine the behaviours that followed. We met Jeff for our FREE consult. He greeted us with his own dog. Who put ours to shame. Lol. Jeff then explained his program to us. We were taken back by the fact that he used e-collars, as we weren't aware beforehand. HOWEVER, he was very straightforward with us and explained how it worked and how it is used as a training tool and not as punishment, and showed us it wouldn't hurt our dog. He was very professional and friendly. I laughed when he said that if we followed his program properly we could have a dog just like his. Now about 6 months into the program.. our pup is doing off leash work and we can actually believe that one day she can be just as well trained. Long story short: Jeff and Staff are all wonderful and knowledgeable. They are attentive and friendly and make you feel welcome every class. Regardless of the few negative reviews, Jeff is kind, professional, knowledgeable, and straight forward. He is always welcoming and makes a point of saying hi to you and your dog every class. We just finished the "In Home" portion of our dog training from Sit Happens Dog Training in Port Coquitlam. We felt compelled to write this review to hopefully counter the two negative 1 star reviews provided. From our experience, those reviews seem 100% contrary to everything we researched, the clients we spoke with, people we met at dog parks around the Tri-Cities and a variety of vets, dog service providers and miscellaneous others. As well, our own experience seems so far removed from the previous 1 Star reviews that it seems only fair to provide another review to provide context. Reviews are valuable to both a business and to consumers and far too often these Yelp reviews paint a negative picture based on minimal criteria or vindictive motives. We are new dog owners. Decided to go against all advice from a variety of people and get two pit pulls. Needless to say, they are a handful and have a ton of strength and endless amounts of energy. Part of our desire was to have a couple of dogs that, although big and with a somewhat negative reputation, could be shown to be lovable, sociable, friendly and well behaved. In looking around at trainers a lot of local companies we spoke with refused outright to train our pups. They cited a bunch of reasons, too busy, work with small and non aggressive breeds so the dogs would be a challenge, etc. We talked to Jeff from Sit Happens, told him we were new dog owners and that we had no practical experience and that both dogs were rescues with very different personalities and temperaments. He didn't hesitate, and suggested we book a FREE consultation so he could get a better idea of the dogs, as well as us as owners. Jeff let us know, very clearly, that the dogs are rarely the problem and that if owners follow the training protocol then their dogs could be trained as well as his personal pets and the 200+ dogs that are showcased on his website (http://sithappensdogtraining.com) Getting the free consultation and demonstration sealed the deal. It was at a public park with a variety of distractions; people walking, running, walking other dogs, geese walking and such around a lake, a large group of school children on a field trip who were loud, etc. Jeff's dog was AMAZING and followed each and every comment at what I can only describe as flawless. Jeff's voice never rose over a typical speaking volume, even when the dog was 100 yards or so away. Verbal commands and a few hand signals were equally effective and the dog seemed as happy with himself as he/she was with Jeff. Happy, friendly, and professional are the only words that described both Jeff and his dog. Reading the two negative one star reviews seems like some kind of alternative reality from our experience and the 40 or so people we've spoken to around Coquitlam. What we noticed with other trainers was that their dogs are motivated by getting a treat when they follow commands. The longer you watch them, the less they seem to follow direction, and the more commands have to be repeated. When the dogs stop wanting the treats then stop doing as they are asked. Kind of like kids only behaving while shopping because they are promised an ice cream cone or something. Regardless of anything written here, I encourage you to shop around and talk to a number of trainers. Before you make a decision about the local trainer you want to assist you with your family pet, I suggest you book a free consultation with Jeff from Sit Happens in Port Coquitlam. The Good: Marilyn. Marilyn knows her stuff, and will most definitely show you how to train your dog. She's great. The Bad: Jeff (the owner). He is aggressive and rude, and will treat you with contempt right off the bat. I really regret spending $900 on this service, only to have Jeff treat me and my wife like we're criminals when we ask to re-schedule an appointment, or ask to have the used, chewed, puppy-sized e-collar exchanged for an adult dog one. Yelling at your customers, Jeff? Really? I would strongly recommend you find a different company to deal with, because I don't think you'll enjoy giving your money to a person who is just plain mean and rude. read more

We have a German Shepherd and the change we have seen in her since employing Jeff from sit happens is remarkable. She is a happier, more confident and positive dog since training with sit happens. Did I mention her behavior is getting jealous looks from all our neighbors in just two weeks? Not only is the dog better, but we are better owners because of the training. Some of the other reviews here say Jeff is arrogant and not good... I couldn't disagree more. What others see as arrogance, is just in fact a person who understands dogs and their owners better than most understand themselves. He is confident, and knowledgable. He gives very clear and direct feedback, always with a focus on positive learning. My dog loves him, loves when he comes over for training, her tail wagging constant all through the session. Yes, sit happens uses e-collars. If you are a person who calls the wambulance every time something goes wrong for you, then add another coat of cotton wool to your life and your precious little puppy-wuppy and be the owner with the unruly dog. I admit I was a little skeptical at first as at the time my friends all said how terrible the e-collars were... mostly friends without dogs. You know... people with unfounded opinions not based on experience. It has the word "electric" in it... it must be awful... right? Wrong. Since we started using the e-collar we have developed a new language enabling us to communicate to our dog, and her to us. I tried the collar on myself first, and could hardly feel it. Jeff gave us excellent instruction on how to operate it at first to make sure we didn't do it wrong. Imagine its like a tap on the shoulder, nothing more. But now I can do that from up to a mile away. Our dog loves wearing the e-collar and sits there very happily as we put it on. Honestly, I will never try to train a dog again without one. Our only mistake has been waiting too long to do this. Our Shepherd was about 5 months when we started and we should have gone to Sit Happens and Jeff at 2 months. Another great thing about Jeff is that he has got back to us really quickly when ever me or my wife have left him messages, or sent him texts... this is after he has been paid by us, so I don't believe the previous comments that he just wanted your money. Regards cost, we got the full training deal. Inside and out. The cost provided 3 at home private sessions and free group sessions for the life of the dog. It also included the e-collar cost. The group sessions are brilliant, you really learn a lot and you can see a range from new owners up to owners who have amazingly well trained dogs. Before all you victim types get your knickers in a twist, calling me a dog racist or whatever... I tried a trainer in Aldergrove at first who was honestly useless. Too much "the dog will learn when it's ready" and "don't let her mix with other dogs ever..." which I realize now was code for "keep coming back and paying me a small fortune as you see minuscule improvements over the years" maybe... With Sit Happens and Jeff, my wife and I saw a huge change in behaviour in the first hour. Like I said at the start, a happier dog from day one. Put it this way, reading this review probably hurt many of you way more than an e-collar ever could. No, I'm not related to Jeff, I'm not benefitting from this review in any way... When I got my boxer puppy that I could see was an alpha dog I realized that I would need good training before she became a big dog out of control and just another statistic. I hired Jeff of Sit Happens and have never looked back. Within a few weeks this little pup was amazing and off leash, walking beside me and could not wait go to the training sessions to socialize with everyone. That was a few years ago and everyone we meet comments on well behaved she is. Jeff was always available should I have any questions and still is. After only three private lessons with Jeff we cannot believe the difference in our dog already! My only regret is I wish we had come to him sooner (our dog is two, and it is recommended that you start the program when they are puppies). I have to admit I was a bit skeptical myself with using an e-collar at first, as I have been a dog owner all my life and I have never needed to use one myself but our guy is a runner and it became very apparent to us that we needed help beyond the traditional ways of training. Any fears or myths about e-collars that we had heard prior to meeting with Jeff were put to bed after our first consultation. I can assure you, along with my husband, my 8 year old, 10 year old and 13 year old that Jeff's e-collars are completely safe and they are not harmful at all. My family knows first hand as Jeff demonstrated on each member of my family exactly what our dog feels on each of us which is a very small vibration. This incredible tool along with Jeff's amazing training program have made us believers! I would definitely recommend the team at Sit Happens, they are extremely knowledgable and always support their product and method 100%. Admittedly, we were unsure at first but after some research, quickly realized that an e-collar was not something we would try to use without proper training. We needed something to help us feel more in control when our dog is running around the yard. She is very high energy and previously broke her leg while running and ignoring us. Since starting with the e-collar we are never in doubt that we can get her attention back, and she is always happy to have it on. It's too bad that so many people try one trainer after another only to make Sit Happens their last stop. They could have saved themselves a lot of money a lot of grief, for both them and their dogs. When I got my first dog 8 years ago Sit Happens helped me take an exuberant, friendly, but seemingly un-trainable dog and make him the envy of all my neighbors. I was so proud of the way he would behave on and off-leash, in and outside of our home. Even my friends who don't really like dogs loved him and welcomed him into their homes because he was so well-behaved. Recently we adopted a new dog, another rescue...another challenge. This friendly pooch was impossible to walk as he would furiously fight with his leash, lunge at everything and everybody, and listen to no one. But we knew what Sit Happens could do and made our appointment the first day our dog arrived. After less than a week, walks with him actually became pleasurable. Now he is patient, responds to several commands (on and off-leash), doesn't jump up unless invited, and is a joy to have around. People who see what Sit Happens can do, and how quickly results are achieved with their remarkable training methods, often think it's a bit of a miracle. Love this program! I'm a repeat customer. I met Jeff about 10 years ago when I had my first golden retriever, who was about 3 years old at the time, and due to changed family circumstances and my lack to time to train, my dog was running me ragged. I SO wished I had called Jeff sooner! The e-collar was the only thing my dog responded to. The positive change in my dog was phenomenal! We were both happier since we found a way to communicate - I was happy that the dog was behaving and Charlie was happier since he wasn't always "in trouble" :) I became a repeat customer this spring with my new retriever puppy, "Ella". I started with Jeff when Ella was 8 weeks and she took to it instantly. Ella is now 4 months and wherever I go, people comment on what a well behaved, happy dog she is. Her recall is amazing! I really can't say much about this business other than to say that I am very distressed after having had our introductory demonstration by Jeff. He was arrogant and demeaning towards me from the very first moment we met. He had no interest in my dog at all, put down every training move that I made, claiming, for instance, that by using the "red light/green light" leash-walking technique and tiny treats for attentive behaviour, I was training our dog to pull on the leash to get treats. Furthermore, having *specifically* given instructions to bring our dog with a collar and leash, he proceeded to tell us how bad it was to use a leash with our dog. He was cagey about his methods, saying on the one hand that he "never raises his voice to his dog and uses positive reinforcement" but in fact, his training methods are entirely shock-collar based, with an expectation that the dog will wear the shock collar for the rest of its life. He claims this is because he loves his dog so much he wouldn't want anything to happen to it if it failed to respond to being called. His bullying behaviour towards us left my husband and myself quite distraught for hours afterwards. I would *never* want to invite this man into my home. read more

We have a boxer and she has been with Sit Happens for the past year and a half. We started her at six months old, after using a different company had little impact on her and was treat based. Our dog is always praised by people out on our walks and while she is off leash. She sits, stays, comes and downs on command, which is convenient when faced with distractions such as dogs, bikes, cars, etc. The trainers at Sit Happens are knowledgeable, kind, patient and I've witnessed train even the most difficult dogs; it is by far the best money we have spent. The training is unlimited, for life, so even though our dog is very well behaved, she enjoys going and practicing her skills with the other dogs. No two classes are the same in content. Owners sign up online, so it is always a different mix of dogs. Our dog, Bella, loves going, and she makes sure I touch up on my skills too as a handler :) I recommend Sit Happens to all of my friends with dogs! Finally, dog training that actually works. We got an Aussie puppy who is very smart and learns quickly but really liked to challenge us. She also pulled like a steam train on walks. We tried two obedience classes with minimal success. They were indoors and treat orientated. Our puppy just got fat and was happy to obey commands at home for a treat but out on the trail if there was something better there was no way she was going to listen to us. We found Sit Happens - (you probably have seen their van driving around with the boxer decal on the sides) and were very impressed with their free at home consultation and demonstration and signed up and have not looked back. Probably the best money I have ever spent . Anyway our Aussie is now a dream to walk and take out with us anywhere, greets guests nicely and obeys us completely out on the trail. We have just gotten another puppy and she has joined our Aussie at Sit Happens. The new baby is a rescue and came with a few issues which Sit Happens training has fixed really quickly. We are able to speak with Jeff from Sit Happens between classes if we run into a problem unlike the other schools we tried where were not allowed to call them (crazy eh!).
