Took my fur babe to the day training, had a great experience. Then a few months later decided to board him for a week while we went out of town. Called a few days in and they said he was doing great. Came back to them saying he was sick most of the time and so incredibly sickly that we had to take him to an emergency vet. She gave us antibiotics and pain meds due to an open wound on his testicle from the cleaning solution they use to clean the kennels. Took over a week for him to be able to sit down without yelping. We spoke to Rodney and Rachel about it and they were quick to get us in and out and be done with it. They wrote us a check for the $130 vet visit, only to have the check BOUNCE AND HAVE MY BANK CHARGE ME A FEE. Absolutely ridiculous. How embarrasing for them. Now we don't feel safe leaving our babe and will bever be back. read more

The best thing I've ever done as a dog owner is invest in this training program. We have two pups, one a lab rescue, Amelia (3yo) and a rott mix rescue, Emmett (2 to). Our lab rescue was easy to train ourselves, but when we rescued the second pup we struggled with obedience. Quickly, the new pup taught the other some bad habits and we had lost most of the control in our home. This is a moment where you can try to insist you know what to do and can handle the responsibility you took on by yourself, or you can wise up and admit that you aren't a professional dog trainer and ask for help. We chose the latter. We have busy lifestyles, three kids going on four. Lots of activities and a social lifestyle. We chose the two week board and train for our rott mix, Emmett. It was a major investment and one I wish we had made sooner. It has changed our lives. This isn't to say we didn't have work to do, because you learn quickly that training is an everyday process for the rest of your dog's life. The difference is that Emmett now has a strong foundation and we were empowered with the skills to work with them and reinforce good behavior. Meal times are no longer spent worrying about if the dogs are counter surfing, instead they are laying calmly in their place in another room. Meal times are regulated and calm. They no longer run us over trying to rush outside in the morning. They get to enjoy being dogs and trust us as their owners. I am forever grateful for Mark, Rodney and Mika as their trainers. If you're struggling over the price, I promise you the quality of life you will get in return will be worth every single penny. We have loved the group train classes and I'm actually sitting outside waiting for Saturday's class as I write this. When I walked in I thought the trainers would judge me for not having control. Instead they are truly committed to helping you. Their support through the process has been a god send and if they see you or your dog struggling, they jump to step in and support you. It has been truly one of the best, encouraging and supportive programs and far exceeded any expectations we could have had coming into it. 10/10 recommend. read more

I want to express my gratitude to Rodney, Sam, and the team at Sit Means Sit in Monroe, MI. My 3-year-old female German shepherd has been reactive towards other dogs, which made it difficult for me to take her on walks during the day or into crowded places with other dogs. We decided to enroll her in the 2-week board and train program. Although I missed her greatly during that time, the results were well worth it. The training not only helped Stella but also equipped me with the tools and confidence to handle her outside of the training facility. Recently, a dog approached us off-leash, and I am confident that the outcome would not have been as good if I hadn't been provided with the tools to help Stella and myself navigate that scary situation. I'm looking forward to attending the group class on Wednesdays. I would highly recommend this place, and I firmly believe that every dollar spent was well worth it. I've been wanting to write this post for 6 months but was asked (**bullied) by the staff at Sit Means Sit not to. Unfortunately someone I know has recently had a horrible experience similar to what I went through and my conscience can't let me sit by anymore. I would hate for someone else's dog to suffer because, like me, they were fooled by this 'training' program. Background story: I adopted a 5 month old rescue puppy to add to the two dogs I already have at home. I have trained the other dogs myself but was looking for a quick training program to help get us on the right foot. The first thing you do at this facility is sign up for a consultation, then after that you drop your dog off for a day to start their training. At the end of their training day, you are invited in to see what they have been 'learned.' During our consultation, I was sold on the program for various reasons. First and foremost, I was told the training collar would only be used if the dog was distracted, as it's like a 'tap' on the shoulder to get their attention. Sounds completely OK right? Well this was absolutely not what I experienced during the training session. The collar was pushed with every command, regardless if my dog was paying attention or already doing what was asked of her. I counted 24 'taps' in one minute at one point. Just to reiterate this point- my dog would already be sitting and the 'trainer' would say sit then shock her again. I asked why the constant shocking was necessary especially if the dog was already listening and the 'trainer' said it's because the dog needs to know you're always in control... Second, during the consultation I was told training on the collar would be done on a level between 0-2 since she is a puppy. I tested these levels on myself to ensure there was no pain. When we got to our training session, the collar was on a 5. I requested to try it on my palm to see if it was painful and please believe me when I tell you that it absolutely was. When the trainer took her to show us what she 'learned' she yelped when he pushed the button. Throughout the next 20 minutes he gave us various excuses why she yelped- she's getting used to the collar, she was trying to get sympathy from me, and the collar surprised her. I found these excuses redundant and pointless as it was obvious the collar had hurt her. Furthermore, the trainer did not seem to know our dog nor did he follow the command words we were asked to change on the sheet given to us. He kept calling my dog the WRONG name. He was also using the command 'Heel' instead of our desired term 'Walk' and 'Go' instead of our term 'Release.' I have two dogs at home who respond to those commands- which is why they asked us to change the given command words. So we had to reteach her to respond to our command words after she had been shocked hundreds of times because he was using the wrong ones. Lastly, and the most telling experience from this horrible situation- the 'trainer' had his own personal dog there. His dog was making a lot of noise in its crate and the 'trainer' was telling it to be quiet. The dog didn't listen to him until the 'trainer' pick up the remote to the shock collar. The 'trainer' then wanted to show how his dog listened to certain commands. Again, the dog would not obey unless being shocked. What they don't tell you is that their training is only guaranteed if your dog is wearing the shock collar during all waking hours of the day. Inside, outside, in the car, anywhere- they expect you to have the very, very tight collar on your dog and for you to be in possession of the remote to shock them every single time you give the dog a command. This is for the rest of your dogs life. I don't know about anyone else- but my other dogs listen to commands without being shocked dozens of times a day. The cherry on top of this nightmare was when my husband went to get our refund, he was approached by the owner and 'trainer' who very pointedly told him not to leave a bad review.... I have owned/ fostered almost 30 puppies/dogs. I have always used positive reinforcement to train them and what I saw at Sit Means Sit truly discouraged me from ever straying from that path again. I have never seen dogs so shut down and unhappy during training as I saw in that facility. I would have never agreed to this if information given to me during the consultation was more accurate to how the facility 'trains' dogs. These 'trainers' use force, intimidation, and fear to control dogs. 6 months after my dogs training session I still find it hard to sleep at times because I'm thinking of the horror I saw at that facility. If you want a fearful dog who only obeys you when it has a shock collar on then this place is for you. If you want a happy dog that obeys you because it trusts you, then please seek alternate training- preferably one that focuses on positive reinforcement and not constant punishment. read more

I had set up an in home consultation for our 6 month old German Shepherd. I was so glad to have them accommodate me as I was afraid of taking my puppy to their training center. Needless to say, these guys called and said they were running behind and would be late to an 11:30 am appointment. They showed up drunk!! The older gentleman could barely walk. I was so afraid as I was home alone with two drunk men and a 6 month puppy who just wanted to play! An Update: I didn't realize that there were more than one location and they are privately owned. Since posting the review, I received numerous calls (about 1-2/day) as well as emails asking to edit the review and post it under the correct Sit Means Sit of SE Michigan. Needless to say, none of the calls/emails include an apology for their behavior. Please go out of business and don't drive drunk! read more

I was desperate to find a trainer as all classes were filled elsewhere. I was told I would get 3 classes for $150 private training. When I arrived they were not ready for my appointment. We sat for 2 hours while the guy's solution to my Australian Shepherd nipping out of fear was to stomp on her leash and hold her down to the ground by her collar even after she showed she was in pain. He then didn't tell us anything, he just fed her treats and walked around seeing if she'd follow. I called back for my next lessons to hopefully switch trainers and get my monies worth and the company has been ignoring me for weeks now. The only reason I am even giving 2 stars is because I saw a female trainer working with another dog who looked like she actually knew what she was doing. Even the employees looked eerie of what this man was doing to my dog. I am highly dissatisfied and upset they took my money and won't schedule the lessons I paid for. read more
