I can't even begin to tell you what a breath of fresh air it has been since switching to Barnes. My father is dealing with a very rare type of tumor on his brain stem. A biopsy was done initially through SLU Hospital and the entire experience there was traumatizing to say the VERY least (with the exception of some of the nurses because I don't want to paint everyone with a broad brush). When we felt like we were shucked to the side with SLUH, we went seeking out a 2nd opinion and new neurologist and neurosurgeon. The level of seriousness and care at Barnes has been above and beyond anything we could have ever expected. I was truly blessed when they opened the Siteman center in Shiloh, IL. Dr Bose is the best oncologist I've ever met (I'm a nurse and I have worked oncology before, so I've met a lot of oncologists) and he cared enough to call daily to check how I was surviving the chemo treatments. The nurses in the lab and in the treatment rooms are all top notch and are like family. Dr Sue L was a phenomenal radiation oncologist and never hesistated to take the time to answer any of my questions, concerns and problems through the radiation treatments. The radiations techs were very caring and knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable in a very scary and alien situation. Both sides were there to cheer and celebrate ringing the bell with their patients. As scary as cancer is, this place becomes your second home and the staff becomes family, and they all show how much they care and they will be there for you every step of the way. read more

When people say siteman is a great facility, it really is. I've been here multiple times for treatment and the services is always great! The doctors, nurses, and staff are super friendly and caring. The place is clean inside and out and they take precautions of everything especially with our ongoing pandemic. I have never seen so many genuine people all in one place. Siteman is supposed to be the best in the area but they way the have treated my sister with her ovarian cancer is extremely disappointing. I wouldn't wish this situation on anyone; however, I wish those in charge would know how it feels to be this helpless when it comes to treatment. Not only do they make her wait sometimes days (while in pain) for answers, they scheduled her for a drain placement only to cancel the day of without notifying her. She has had several hospital stays, this last one they promised her drain would be put in Monday 8/1 at 7:30 AM, it is now 2 PM and no word still. She had stage 3 ovarian cancer, is in extreme pain and they are making her wait without food or water, which she is already dehydrated and starving. This is just the latest example of their lack of empathy and care. The only options we have are to leave messages that rarely get returned. Perhaps I wouldn't be so upset if this had happened once or twice. But the fact is the center is actively advertising how great they are while the patients they do have are not getting adequate care. read more

You really don't know when you're IN the Siteman Cancer Center. I went July 11 for an annual mammogram at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Breast Health Center. They found something "odd," "fishy," "off" . . . whatever you want to call it. I called it bad. They called for an ultrasound two days later, July 13 . . . Friday the 13th. That ultrasound confirmed initial suspicions, and called for a biopsy July 25, the following Wednesday. I think I'm in the Siteman Cancer Center now. Biopsy showed a mass -- ~8mm. Different breast this time. Different cancer characteristics. A totally new cancer. I'm 20 years out from my "first" breast cancer, not at all suspecting there would be a second. Surgery with Dr. William Gillanders (He's surgerated on me before.) August 7, with two pre-surgery operatives, neither of which was glorious. OK, let's stop. They were both horrific, and they hurt a bunch. Dr. Gillanders came to talk with me about the surgery beforehand. That was helpful and a BIG DEAL!! Not a lot of surgeons do that. Miss C. was with me all day. We arrived at 6:30 a.m. I don't know when we left, 'cause I was on another planet. Hence, a need for a driver. Through all of these tests and pre-surgical procedures, EVERY SINGLE PERSON was friendly, nice, kind, knowledgeable and helpful. How do so many great people get in one place together to deliver such masterful service? And I'm including the transport folks, too, 'cause they wheelchaired me to both of those pre-surgical procedures. We talked a lot as we were rollin' down the river and findin' all the shortcuts. THAT was fun. These transport guys are incredibly personable! Next, after surgical recovery and a green light from Dr. Gillanders, I was on to radiation oncology. Dr. Imran Zoberi is my radiation oncologist. I saw him a lot in the lower level of the Center for Advanced Medicine. He is informative, helpful and generous in conversation. My protocol was 10 radiation treatments in five days, generally 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. I stayed on campus, doing a LOT of walking and periodically stopping to read my book. AND I ran into Ben S. on one of those reading breaks. HAHAHA -- what fun! I got my own coded entry card for all the radiation treatments, and found my way back to where the rubber meets the road. All the people were so friendly and helpful, AND they had senses of humor. Good idea!! The day after my last radiation treatment, I was on to the medical oncologist. I'm writing a separate review of Dr. Michael Naughton, as I've reviewed him during my last trip down this dark alley. read more

My family's experience at Siteman /BJC has been great. All of the nursing staff have been amazing- very professional and great at communicating a lot of information with skill. The same can be said of our physician interactions as well. Although we'd prefer never to have dealt with cancer at all, we're glad Siteman has been here to help us through it. read more

Have you ever had nightmares about being lost, or trapped, or always just being wrong? You can make all those nightmares come true with a visit to the malignant steel and glass tumor that is the Siteman Center, in the city's Central West End. I've been there three times this year, and though in the two cases where surgery was involved everything turned out beautifully, the experiences were just awful, in every other respect. For myself, I went for a minor dermatological exam, but waited 45 minutes to see the pre-screener, who asked me to verbally repeat everything I'd already put on a lengthy paper form. Ironically, after filling out the form, and repeating everything to the screener (after the long wait), my chief concern at the appointment was never addressed. I had been distracted by the small-talk of the young resident, and was halfway home in rush-hour traffic by the time I realized I never got a spot removed from my back. (The doctor, when I complained later, said he would have the schedulers call me back, but they never did.) In every case, I have found the parking garage immediately north of the center to be a nightmare of poor design, where you can never figure out if you're getting out, and once you do, you realize you had no choice in which exit you could select-- a problem if you are driving around to pick someone up in the (godawful) valet parking area. (The valet parking needs someone-- or TWO someones-- to direct traffic through that small, very congested pick-up/rdrop off area.) I sometimes think "professional" people prefer that you don't know the basic facts about your relationship with them, just to keep you lowly and submissive. That's my only explanation for the non-existent (to occasionally merely poor) signage around the parking garage AND the Center building itself. On my most recent visit, I had to climb three huge flights of stairs, because the elevators did not go up to the surgery center, and there were no signs to steer me to other ways up. At the Surgical Center, every statement and comment I made was challenged or contradicted by Cindy, the receptionist there, on the fourth floor. It's just a simple conflict of rhetorical construction, but you'd never get away with that kind of constant (implied) dominance in any non-authoritarian setting. The other lady who came forward to give me a pager (to pick up a patient) did commiserate with me about the awful parking garage. So misguided, the whole monster hospital complex, in spite of the wonder-inducing medicine practiced there (when they actually do what you've asked them to do). Perhaps if this vast operation spent more of its money on patient intake and handling cars and just listening and putting things into the visitor's own language, i.e., ADAPTING to the public; and LESS money into throwing up gigantic hospital building after gigantic hospital building, to shed "profits" in this non-profit gold mine, they'd actually be operating in the public interest. read more

I'm going to start by saying, I hope you never have to come here. I hate cancer. I came here with my mama. (She has stage 4 breast cancer.) this is a nice facility. Almost overwhelming to realize that this many people are fighting the same battle. The people make you feel comfortable even when your at your weakest. I thank god for the people that work here. Amazing, beautiful, state of the art, breath taking. This is how I describe the Siteman Cancer Center along with the Center for Advanced Medicine. BJC and Wash U really know what they are doing. I visited Dr. Premal Thaker, what a wonderful women and very intelligent at best. Being in this facility I thought I was at Grand Central Station minus the trains. From valet at the front door, to the traffic personnel directing cars, the parking garage level after level jammed packed, the sky bridges connecting the parking areas to the facility.....really just amazing the hustle and bustle of the health facility. I have been to other hospitals and centers and this by far is the very best. I am lucky to have a physician associated with technology, research and advanced medicine that is truly saving people. read more

I promise I will do my best NOT to gross you guys out with this review- After years of having on again off again issues with my right ear, and having problems hearing, after this past weekend of water skiing, and getting water in my ear, it didnt seem to be getting any better. (like it normally does) I was fed up. I wanted to hear again. So, after some research and a few phone calls, I decided to go with the ENT doctors at the Center for Advanced Medicine. I can say, I definitely made the correct decision. My appt was at 3:00--- I arrived at the hospital at 2:50 and checked in. I was given my papers to fill out and no sooner than I sat in the chair my name was called. Awesome! The nurse took me back, weighed me, checked my blood pressure, and then put me in a room and said the doc would be just a couple minutes. She really meant just a couple minutes- Dr.Neely came right in, laid me back in the chair, took a look in my ear and instantly diagnosed the issue.........ear wax! :( so gross, I know...no wonder i couldnt hear! He took about 5 minutes to clean everything out, and I have NEVER been able to hear so clear in my whole life!!!! It was truly life changing. It was THAT quick, and THAT amazing. I will definitely return to Dr.Neely in the future for a cleaning.. Thank you Center for Advanced Medicine! read more

Dr. Parks, rheumatologist, is the best! She is very easy going and gets you in and out quickly.

Dr.Bullock removed my husband's bladder on August 25, 2011. My husband endured debilitating pain beginning December 1, 2011. No other treatment was offered him after several return visits and he died June 21, 2012 with hospice pumping so many drugs into him, I don't believe he knew he that he was dying. I am still devastated. He was my soulmate and best friend for 38 1/2 years. I miss him so. There was NO cancer team! read more

My mother was treated for Pancreatic Cancer with Chemo after a Whipple Procedure. Dr Benjamin Tan was the attending physician who set the chemo. routine. She received too many treatments. She became diabetic, got COPD and the treatments damaged her DNA enough that she got another kind of Cancer Multiple Myeloma. In Effect another Dr had to pick up his mistake. This Dr was wonderful with my mom. She went above and beyond everything she could do to help her have quality of Life. My mom never tested positive for Pancreatic again it was gone. My father met with the Head of Sitemans and he agreed that the treatments should have been stopped sooner. He told her she wouldn't even lose her hair she, he had this. I hate chemo, I hate sickness. I hate the current medical system. Taking this to court would do no good. They have too many lawyers and there's a limit in the state of MO for lawsuits. This Dr knows what he did. He is still practicing medicine here. I wonder how many people die everyday to Chemo overdose. It was not even an option given to her that she didn't have to take it. You have a choice! They never told her this could happen. Not even when my dad asked for the good the bad and the ugly so he would know. If it weren't for my father living at the hospital with her she could have died more than once. When will the murder Stop! read more

We moved and don't come here anymore, but now I appreciate how up-to-date the facilities are and how nice the staff are.

This review is not of the Siteman medical team. I'm only commenting on the cleanliness of the facility, or lack there of. My friend underwent a bone marrow transplant there recently. The place was absolutely filthy. His room looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The vents were caked in black dust, the computer cart had years of grimy build up, the floors were filthy. Even the elevators were disgusting. My complaint was met with a half-hearted dusting. Considering his immune system was destroyed during the transplant process, this was very concerning. He was discharged with two serious infections requiring very costly medications. I have to believe there's a connection. How can a facility be considered "world class" with such low cleanliness standards? read more
