Sixt is a nightmare of a company. I had a Mercedes van reserved for us, well ahead of our arrival at Roissy Airport. When we arrived at the Sixt rental office, there was a long line, and we had to wait for 45 minutes to even talk to a human. Our van was not ready. It had to be brought in from another terminal. It finally showed up after another 45 minute wait. The vehicle had horrible dents and scratches on both sides and the front. There was no Sixt employee on the parking lot to talk to. Eventually, after another long wait, one by the name of Lucas showed up. He looked like a first-class hoodlum, and barely spoke French and even less English. He just shrugged when I pointed out the problems with our vehicle, saying that it was not his problem, and suggested that we go back to the main office to complain. All the while a strong wind was blowing and rain was drenching us. Knowing the horrible waiting times inside and the fact that there was no other van available I declined but asked to speak to an agent inside. Lucas refused to give me their number or call them himself. I snapped pictures of the damage to our vehicle, but when I tried to upload them to a Sixt website using a QR code I was given, I was told that my report was too late, even though we had not even left the Sixt parking lot.
But wait, there is more.
The Sixt parking lot at Roissy T2E-F has 2 exits, but both were bocked by cars whose drivers could not get the exit barrier raised. A painstaking backup process ensued involving many more cars. Another 45 minutes elapsed before the SNAFU was cleared up. Finally on the road we realized that our van had a nasty shimmy above a certain speed. A Mercedes V 220d costs over $90k new, but it was clear that this relatively new vehicle had already been horribly abused by previous renters and not serviced properly. I complained subsequently and tried to trade our junker for another van in better shape, alas to no avail. A surly Sixt company representative told me that unless the vehicle was involved in an accident susceptible to compromise our safety, we could not exchange it. So we are stuck with it for 21 days. We are on what is supposed to be a luxury tour with 2 other couples, staying at Relais & Châreaux hotels and eating at Michelin starred restaurants. But when it comes to ground transportation, Sixt failed us lamentably. We are paying over $4,000 for this rental, and Sixt will probably try to charge us for all the damage done to this vehicle before we even picked it up. Terrible company! read more
