Sixt gives service at a level below the competition, does not have a good inventory of cars, prepares paperwork without assuring the car is acceptable to the client, and makes charges that have no relation to actual rental but are buried in the fine print. The root cause of Sixt being a poor choice for renting a car is they have so few cars. The Sixt website offers many alternatives, size, gasoline, diesel, manual transmission, automatic transmission, each with different price. A diesel engine or an automatic transmission is priced higher than the gasoline car with manual transmission. The problems began when I got to the counter. The Sixt staff did not inform me the correct car was not available. The staff should have told me this fact straight out when I arrived. They did not. I discovered it only by asking an unrelated question when all the paperwork was done. Only then did I learn the car on the papers did not meet the description in the reservation. They said they had selected this specific car for me, as if the customer wouldn't want what he picked on the web. I knew I wanted a manual transmission. This is the norm in Europe and exactly what I wanted. The website offered to charge a large amount more per day for automatic, so I felt assured I'd get the manual transmission. But Sixt not only did not have one ready, they were proud of having the automatic "selected for me". Fact was it was the only car in that category they had ready. Time was wasted preparing paperwork before I discovered the correct car was not available. There was no equivalent car ready to go. There was one that might be ready in half an hour. There was a smaller car with manual transmission ready to go. Being short on time, I accepted that one and regretted it the whole trip. The car did not live up to its brand's reputation. Thus the issue is Sixt does not have enough cars to give the customer what he wants. Other rental companies have plenty of cars and have always made sure I'd accept the specific car before printing the paperwork. Add to that the fact Sixt kept all the money for the larger car plus tried to add an additional charge after I got home. I appealed to Sixt headquarters in Germany, but they were as unbending as the rental office manager. They all said your signature means you pay anything we say you pay. Sixt claims the added charge was revealed on the web, but it was not in the total price. It may have been in the fine print, but I don't think it was. Again Sixt is not upfront and open as good companies are. The lack of the slightest remorse or accommodation on the part of Sixt leaves me certain Sixt is a car rental company to avoid. read more
