We wanted to try some Indian food while in Victoria. We love the spices and found Sizzling Tandoor on Yelp. Mostly five star reviews so we decided to give it a go. We had a high bar because we had just gone to an Indian restaurant in Chicago that was over the top good. Sizzling Tandoor met that bar. It was just as good as Chicago. Many reviews mentioned the Rogan Josh Lamb so we ordered that and balanced it off with Chicken Tikka Masala. We each ate half of each entree. A side of plain Naan completed the meal. We like hot food and we're going to order hot, but our server, Muskan, convinced us to get medium hot. It was perfect. Muskan was attentive but didn't hover. She engaged us in a nice convo after our meal and was very pleasant. The most difficult part was deciding which we liked better. The lamb won, but only by a small margin. We really liked this place. Our food was wonderful and servings were generous. It's a very good looking restaurant. Service was slow and that probably is a kitchen problem. They weren't very busy on Sunday evening but only one server was working and she had to bus the tables also. Apparently they don't answer the phone. We had butter sauce with chicken, navratan korma and naan. The charge was C $46 plus tax and tip. That's about US $33.54. Street parking only. read more

For dinner My hubby ordered the sizzling tandoori chicken and I had the most amazing rojan josh lamb dish in their perfectly spiced sauce in a generous serving. I ordered med hot which was flavorful. Probably should be 1 Star. Not the greatest Indian but came highly recommended by several people, hotel, shop keepers and other (Indian) waiters. The owner or manager and one waiter were great and tried there best to put on a good service, but there wine list was pitiful, but because she went to a near by place to fined a wine that would pare with the food, I have given an extra star. The place looks tired and minimal atmosphere. We ordered a variety of starters (Popadoms, Nan Bread, Samosa etc) and then for main course, lamb sag which was good and a lamb Rogan josh which was also good. We added a lamb kebab (we like lamb), which was bland to say the least. The sad thing was that both my partner and I were sick all night with a bad stomach. She was worse than I, but I think it was the kebab, but not sure, all I know is that the acid indigestion was pretty rough and up all night with a bad stomach is no fun. We both know Indian food well and this wasn't an affect of spice, something was past it's due date etc., I would imagine. I feel bad because I hate to give such a bad review, and I know after COVID, restaurants have been seriously hit, so I struggled on how to write this, but I feel there is a responsibility also to future customers. Delicious Indian food! This was right across from our hotel so we decided to give it a try after it was recommended by a shopkeeper in town. We had requested some dietary accommodations and they were amazing about it. The service was friendly and helpful too. The mussels were delicious as were the curries and tandoori dishes. Really really and I mean really poor quality food, the butter chicken tasted like it was 4-5 days old, it was horrible, and I'm being generous with my words. Nothing was fresh And nothing tasted fresh It all tasted like it was made days previously and stale. The mint chutney was more like a yogurt with a hint of mint salad dressing, the naan was like chewing on gum, super chewy texture and not pleasing, it was just bad all around. And they had music that was blaring super loud, who thinks it's ok to blare rap music during lunchtime. Sorry to be blunt but the food has gone downhill so severely in the last 10 years since the opened, it's quite sad. They used to be amazing at the uptown restaurant when they opened it approx 10 years ago, but it's so bad now I wouldn't even go back if it was free. We dined here on New Year's Eve and had a nice time. They apparently had a bunch of cancellation so they were accommodate us without a reservation which was great. My partner and I both got martinis and they Were wonderful. The tandoori was bone in which I didn't know so I didn't care for that much (I just have a thing with bone in meat so that's just my picky was not a reflection on them). The curry was pretty good, the sauce was much better then the chicken and the chunks were pretty big. The naan I though was a bit undercooked, I like them a little charred and one of our pieces did not have any air pockets on it (see photo). Our bill for 3 drinks 2 dishes and 1 naan came to around $90 with tax & 15% tip, so it's not a especially cheap place but the food was good. read more

I live right above a different Indian restaurant, and I still walk the few blocks just to go to Sizzling Tandoor downtown. They're my favourite in Victoria. Kabuki Curry is the best! I've had nearly everything on the menu and I still get it every time. I usually do takeout because I live so close, but it's still a great spot for a date night, or a place to take fam when they're in town. The atmosphere is great, a beautiful fusion of contemporary and traditional. Their drink menu is playful and smart. Their staff is always friendly, and over the years their manager Kirn has learned my name and always been grateful to see me in again. read more

What luck, this restaurant was just outside our hotel! The owner greeted us as we walked in, and was quick in cleaning an empty table by the window (it was pretty packed in there, which is usually a good sign!). Water and popadoms set on the table, instant thumbs up. We ordered probably a bit too much (but still ate it all, ahem). The tandoori chicken was sizzling, the onions nice and fresh. The korma was nice and creamy - the nuts on top gave it a good texture. Plenty of rice, the plain naan was huge, and the onion and cilantro naan was smaller but packed with flavor! Oh oh and the mango lassi was kind of neon, loved it! All in all, I wish this place was in Vancouver! read more

Being lovers of Indian food, we scoped out Sizzling Tandoor on our holiday trip to Victoria. We were there right as they opened and were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable employee. We told her it was our first time there and she walked us through the menu and encouraged us to check out the lunch buffet. The ambiance is hip and downtown cool, it's very clean and welcoming space. The food was very good, and let me tell you we are pretty picky about our Indian food (thanks to Swagat, which you must try if you're ever in Portland, Ore.). The buffet had a great selection of vegetarian and meat options--our family's favorite, the butter chicken. Their vegetable pakoras were the best I have ever had (sorry Swagat!) They had a nice selection of sauces, salads, fruit, and rice pudding (Kheer). Proof-positive of how much we liked it, we are thinking about going back for dinner, which is something we never do (we are just all Indian buffet all the time typically!) Give them a try! read more

We ordered food from Sizzling Tandoor and it was absolute unpleasant experience; instead of paying a good sum of money for food. The restaurant staff lags sense of gratitude and appropriate client behavior. There should be proper coaching for the employees working in the restaurant in terms of following: 1. How to greet and find solutions for an error done at restaurants end? 2. While taking orders some pointers needs to be mentioned and explained in terms of extra cost for extra condiments, practically which should be complimentary. There is no big issue in paying a little extra for good service but paying for nonsense service is BS. I personally don't recommend this restaurant to anybody. read more

My brother in law wanted Indian food for his birthday dinner so we chose Sizzling Tandoor. I was never really a fan of Indian as I am pretty picky but went along as it was his day. We called and the gentleman on the phone was so polite and extremely helpful! everything we ordered was delicious! The pakora was delish, butter chicken of course was on point, and the daal was amazing! The tandoor chicken was the show stopper though. Seriously delicious Indian cuisine, possibly the best I've ever had. The sizzling tandoori is a must try, had the Chicken Tikka which was flavorful and moist. The Aloo Pattar was very tasty; Masala was perfectly seasoned and the garlic Naan was incredible, nicely crisp, thin and light. They make really good cocktails, the atmosphere was warm and cozy on a cold rainy night. The waitstaff was very helpful, attentive and nice. Finding an Indian place wasn't too big of an issue, there are plenty of them in downtown Victoria. The Sizzling Tandoor had some so-so reviews on Yelp, so we took a gamble in giving it a try. The parking around this place is really limited, especially after the meters are shutdown. The inside dining area has a small number of tables and the place appeared very clean. They have a large selection of items to choose from here, a very diverse menu. They have various different Indian dishes, Italian dishes and some Mediterranean ones.. The naan bread was a pretty big portion but it shared the same issue as the hummus, no flavor. Although it had no flavor, it was cooked decent and was soft inside. They also seemed to use a large portion of oil on it, even though you couldn't taste it. The rosemary naan was the same way except you could taste a bit of the rosemary seeds in it. Very disappointing naan here, I would not recommend it. I know it's not the best idea to get some pasta from a Indian place, but it was suppose to come with tandoori flavors which isn't something you see anywhere back in the states. The food really didn't have much flavor to it and they must not know how to add spiciness to the food. Most entrees here will run you about 15-20 bucks, which is pretty high priced in my opinion. I am very hard to please when it comes to Indian food. I have a very Americanized palate(obviously), and only like a handful of dishes. But when I see those dishes on a menu, I get so excited. Sizzling Tandor has one of my favorites, mango curry. This one was a little less sweet than I was used to, but had a lot of good flavors. My medium was actually fairly spicy, which was a pleasant surprise. While it may not have been exactly what I was looking for, it was really quite good none the less. The lamb was good quality too. My friend loved her Cocnut curry, and my boyfriend thought his Tikka Masala was ok, but liked my dish a lot better. The naan was huge, and tasty. Prices were a bit high, but I wasn't surprised. Indian food usually is a couple dollars too expensive. The food and service were both good though. Walking distance for people staying in the Inner Harbor, but far enough away from the tourists to encourage a lot of locals, with better food quality and lower prices. read more

Oh crap, there's a delicious Indian buffet restaurant located a block away from my office. This is dangerous. I have yet to try any of Sizzling Tandoor's non-buffet items, but the buffet is possibly the best I have ever eaten at. The buffet contains fairly standard buffet items - butter chicken, korma, lamb vindaloo (i think), raita, tandoori chicken, chana masala. All delicious. And the restaurant serves Naan to you in a basket straight from the Tandoor. The buffet costs $12 and is only available at lunchtime. This is a fantastic value. read more
