French Indian fusion spot in Victoria. Pretty solid spot - it wasn't busy when I went Sunday around 4:30pm but I can imagine it being quite busy on a Friday or Saturday evening as the space is quite small. I did call to make a reservation just in case but in the end was not needed - I believe that is the only way to reserve to ensure you don't need to wait for a table. I got the fishhook chowder and the squimp toast. Fishhook chowder was decent - felt a bit watered down as I was expecting a stronger spice at minimum, but also not too salty. A bit watery than I expected. But I can still taste notes of the coconut milk and herbs so it could've been a bit better. The squimp toast is amazing - this is a must get. It's a combo of Humboldt squid and shrimp, both of which carried the flavors forward in the toast. And it is quite crispy. It's a fairly substantial dish at a relatively good price so this is actually a lot better than the fishhook chowder that people keep hyping about. Service is good as water refills are apparent. It feels more a fast casual than a more formal sit down, but prices are great and reflective as such. read more

We were in Victoria for the day and knew we'd need to head back to the ferry soon, and so were looking around for a place we could get an early dinner. We realized we'd need to head out earlier than expected because of traffic anxiety, so pivoted to looking for takeout so we could eat either in the car or on the ferry. My wife found Fishhook and so we stopped in and placed our orders as we were heading out of town. I got the "Belly" sandwich, which was incredible. The sauerkraut, arugula, and pesto had a nice kick to it, the fish was flawless, and the bread was perfectly toasted. My wife has a lot of food issues (gluten-free, allium sensitivities, etc.), and they let her basically custom order a combination of salmon grilled with salt and pepper on a lightly dressed bed of romaine. They were super friendly about it as well. It was all SO GOOD! It took about 10 minutes after ordering to come out, and then we were on our way. Made the ferry with plenty of time to spare. Absolutely delicious, and we will absolutely be back. read more

We were in town for the Canada Dry dragon boat festival and made reservations at Fishook because the menu was very intriguing - a marriage of Indian tradition and PNW seafood. We were greeted immediately and shown our table. It's a very small and cute place. Drink orders followed. We opted to try the house-made ginger'd mint & lime soda. We started with salmon pekoras followed by the biryani and the halibut daily Katch (as recommended by our server). The staff is very friendly. The sodas were awesome! Very refreshing. The pekoras were also fantastic. Flaky salmon in a chickpea batter served with a cooling sauce and some chili oil. The portions are very generous. The halibut was a great recommendation. The fish was well prepared and the spices really lent a good flavor. The tandoori salmon on the biryani was also well prepared and the biryani itself was great. Again, the seafood portions were generous. When you're in Victoria, make a reservation and try Fishhook (the did have to turn away a number of diners who didn't have reservations). read more

Best meal of our trip to Victoria! The food was amazingly flavored, and it was interesting as we were not familiar with fresh fish and seafood combined with Indian spices. So delicious and seafood was handled perfectly. Even delicate squid was tender in the biryani. We had great service when we arrived and through ordering. Very helpful discussing the menu. We loved everything we ordered, especially the mussels and The Belly tartine. These were both exciting in flavor and texture. The bread they were served with was crispy, light and delicious. We also enjoyed the seafood kaftka and the aforementioned bireyani. The pickles were a wonderful way to start the meal. The food was both familiar and unusual. If we lived here, I'm sure we'd come often. Our only complaint was no one came to clear our used dishes and discuss dessert. We couldn't even catch someone's attention for more than 10 minutes, and the restaurant was quiet at this point in the evening. We finally got someone's attention and ordered the ganache. So happy about that too. Rich, smooth, chocolaty, topped with berries and cardamom coconut cream. Delicious. Glad we had the patience to wait for the server to put down their phone to wait on us. We enjoyed a traditional fish and chips lunch prepared with halibut -- the spiced pickled vegetables slaw and pickled remoulade was delectable!! The coating on the fish was light almost the consistency of a tempura batter. The fish pieces were plump and flaky and were perfectly cooked. I was really excited about this place because the reviews were great and I love the concept, but it was disappointing. I got the daily khatch with salmon which was quite expensive ($33) and the salmon was totally overcooked- dry and chalky. The curry was good, but not great. My husband got the fish and chips which was good but didn't have that much masala flavor. The best thing we got was actually the pickles. The ambience was nice though. Service was great- was sat and attended to right away. My kids all ordered Fishhook's freshly made sodas with mango and anise- delicious. I tried a cocktail with a local gin. Visited Fishhook for dinner on a Friday evening with a party of 6. We had 5:00pm reservation that we made the prior day. The restaurant has one table that can accommodate 6-8. Everyone in our group loved the restaurant. We ordered the Poutine, the hot pot, the fresh catch (halibut), Pekoras (halibut), and wine from BC. Service was really good. Everyone working at the restaurant is passionate about the food they service which makes ordering and trying even more fun. The fish/mussels are locally sourced another huge plus! A very good and pleasantly surprising spot! We were wanting to try red fish blue fish but didn't know that they were closed for the season, so we ended up here instead. I didn't realize that this spot had Indian and French influences, which added a really nice and interesting twist on the food! We came at lunch time and got the fish and chips as well as the fishhook chowder. The fish and chips were great - super crispy fish on top of a bed of nicely seasoned thin masala fries. The chowder was also good, but not entirely what I expected. It was thin, and more soup like rather than a thick clam chowder, but it had nice pieces of fish inside and a good coconut flavor that I enjoyed. The water in Victoria is good, but I wanted to try the chai cream soda. It was not sweet at all but had a pleasant chai flavor. We both wanted something hot and the chowder with smoked wild caught salmon and cod fit our needs perfectly! Hubby added The Cure tartine with lox and chive cream cheese on a toasted baguette, while I chose The Tuna Melt tartine with sliced albacore tuna. Interesting fusion of seafood and Indian-French inspired food. I tasted mostly Indian inspired and not so much French. The place was bustling when we came on a Friday, late lunch. We managed to get a seat by the window. The service was quick and friendly, server gave us some help with our menu to identify dishes that may be too spicy for the kids. We ordered: - Briyani ($26) - This was the best dish IMO. We all enjoyed this the most and couldn't get enough. Love the pieces of squid in it. - The Belly ($17) - The sandwich was HUGE. It tasted ok but a bit dry (dry fish on dry bread). The sauerkraut could get a bit much. - Fish and Chips - Cod ($17) - It came with a generous portion size of fish but flavor wise, it wasn't memorable. We shared a medium bowl of the Fishhook Chowder (and toasted baguette) which was indescribably tasty and fresh. The pondicherry and fish n chips are the best! The curry is light and refreshing. The fried fish is very fish forward, allowing you to enjoy the interesting Indo-French sauces it's paired with. We went to Victoria for a few hours and this place was on my list to try from when I was last in this town in 2018 so glad to see they survived the pandemic. They have a different eclectic menu French inspired as we went for a late lunch. We ordered the vindaloo mussels a take on Vongole which came with buttered toasted bread slices which were very flavorful, it could have used a tad bit of extra spice so we asked for their hot sauce and the waiter brought habanero sauce. We also ordered the pondicherry main plate which was wild seafood koftas in a masala (which had rajma, indian kidney bean) curry with white basmati rice (not golden as indicated on the menu as there was no saffron in it). We preferred the mussels over the koftas as they were bland and tasted like an oval shaped salmon burger instead of round, tad bit overcooked. It reminded me of the salmon burgers from nesters. They have some unique soda flavors and we ordered the jalapeño lime, more sour than sweet as we did not want a sweet soda. The area appears to have changed and not for the positive but it's close to downtown. Glad we had a chance to try it. read more

I had this on my list before our trip to Victoria! Dining area was very clean, bright and modern. We were greeted with great customer service on a Sunday afternoon since they are now open on Sundays! I ended up getting the salmon belly sandwich with spicy sauerkraut, and a mustard relish. I loved the bread on the sandwich. It was so light and crisp did not make it seem like I was just filling up on carbs but more protein. My partner got the fried codfish and masala, french fries plus fishhook chowder. Chowder was a little fishy tasting and the broth was thin. I'm not sure I would've called it a chowder as to me chowders are a thicker more creamier broth. We really debated getting the tuna-melt and cod poutine which some other patrons ordered and it looked absolutely amazing! I loved our seafood with an the Indian twist. Lots of different flavors going on with both dishes. I definitely recommend this place and would go back to try several different dishes read more

I think The Cure Tartine was the most interesting dish. The Daily Khatch and Chowder were also very interesting. The Pekoras were also good, especially with the dip.
