Coconut creme caramel (modified to be gluten free)

This was a really great dining experience. Most North American Indian restaurants focus on north Indian food, and the only South Indian food I've previously tried were dosas. The waitstaff was incredibly kind and helpful. I'm vegetarian and my friend who was dining with me is gluten and dairy free. There were several vegetarian appetizers and curries available. Most of the menu was dairy free and about half of it was gluten free. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable about the food ingredients and cooking method, and was immediately able to tell my friend which items met their dietary restrictions, including which items had the risk of cross contamination with gluten, such as through being placed in a frier that was also used for items with gluten. I believe half the appetizers and all the curries were gluten free. I had the chaya (contains dairy) and it was some of the best chai I had throughout my whole vacation in British Columbia. It was very well spiced, rich, and not overly sweet. You could tell they make it in house. We got an egg hopper to start. It was very simple - an egg cooked in an appam, but very tasty. I had the vegetable ishtu with parottas for dinner. The curry had a coconut milk base and was very tasty. My friend had the fish pollichathu and appams. She said it was incredible. It had a bit of a spicy kick to it. For dessert, my friend had the coconut creme caramel, which they modified to be gluten free by not putting the crispy top layer on it. It was so good they ordered a second one to have as breakfast the next morning.

This is on the pricier side, but service and the food truly make up for it. It tastes so good and fresh. They also give you a really nice rose tea with the meal which is so good.

We've had a lot of Indian food but mostly North Indian. Cafe Malabar specializes in South Indian cuisine and the flavors were so powerful but well balanced. We ordered an assortment including the egg puff, tofu cutlet, chicken and spicy fish curries, both rice options, and some parathas. Oh, and a banana smoothie. What a treat. And the chef was so nice even though he was busy filling orders. Nice find inside Victoria Public Market.

This spot was perfection. The wait staff and host were super attentive and helpful with the menu. Was the best meal we've had our trip to Victoria. We had the rock fish in banana leaf with dosa and poratta. 10/10. The curry for the fish was very well made and spice level was perfect for us. The poratta are must tries. We ended the meal with masala chai in the cutest tea cups. The decor of the restaurant is modern and simple. Works really well! Will be coming back if ever in Victoria!

I decided to try Cafe Malabar. It serves classic South Indian food at the Victoria Public Market, and it was a fantastic experience! There are a lot of seatings at the public market. I have always enjoyed the ambiance at public food markets. The restaurants/foods are like hidden gems. Thanks to Chef Kiran's recommendation, I tried the Puttu + Kadala curry, and it exceeded my expectations. The flavours, spices, and textures in the dish were exceptional, especially the black chickpeas. I've never had Puttu before and it was interesting! If you're looking to explore authentic South Indian cuisine, this is the place to be! Chef Kiran's expertise and humbleness added to the overall great service. Highly recommend!

We had a high bar because we had just gone to an Indian restaurant in Chicago that was over the top good. Sizzling Tandoor met that bar. It was just as good as Chicago. Many reviews mentioned the Rogan Josh Lamb so we ordered that and balanced it off with Chicken Tikka Masala. We each ate half of each entree. A side of plain Naan completed the meal. We like hot food and we're going to order hot, but our server, Muskan, convinced us to get medium hot. It was perfect. Muskan was attentive but didn't hover. She engaged us in a nice convo after our meal and was very pleasant. The most difficult part was deciding which we liked better. The lamb won, but only by a small margin. Both were excellent.

They weren't very busy on Sunday evening but only one server was working and she had to bus the tables also. Apparently they don't answer the phone. Delicious. It's tiny and takeout only, but good things come in small packages, and this is proof. The owner/chef, "Unni," went out of his way to explain the ingredients, history, and culture, while providing tasty samples of everything. He clearly takes pride in what he does, and I'll be coming back a LOT. I don't know if they're there all the time, but his two delightful children were playing while I waited, and once they got over their shyness, they couldn't have been more entertaining. They insisted on pasting stickers on their dad's face, which he wore proudly. Lots of fun. Fortunately for me, Unni serves many meat dishes (beef, pork, chicken) in addition to vegetarian fare, so there's something for everyone. They even offer three kinds of rice! I see some complaints about the food being bland, but that wasn't my experience...quite the opposite. Lots of intriguing spices! Check it out yourself. Oak Harbor needs places like this!

As per the descriptions I read of this, the spices are subtle and mild unless you ask for extra heat. Which suites my taste. The vegetarian curry had a variety of vegetables and spices + choice of 3 vegetable dishes. My carrot, broccoli and beet choices were each special subtle and full flavors. Came with a mango yogurt and chutney and a crunchy garnish too. I upgraded my rice to Chamba which has a more interesting flavor and texture and I also ordered Raita extra because I love this tangy veggie-herb yogurt side. It all hit the spot and I would go back again next time I'm in the area. The container has to be handled carefully since two of the dishes were quite soupy but you could also order a sturdier cup in a larger serving. The owner was super friendly and also offered me little tastes of a couple other dishes while I decided. (It was a non busy early afternoon time) These include a couple meat options also available and were very good also. Easy parking, on north end of the town.

The food here is great! The dosas were lovely. Dosas are like thick crepes made from chickpea flour so it's great for gluten free people. We had the South India combo and the butter chicken dosa. Both were very nice. We also ordered the beef madras which was my favorite. I like a good curry and the ladder was very nice and not too hot at a medium spice level. We also had sukka coffee with a nice ginger flavor and tasted like a wee bit of sugar in it. My friend, fancies it and it was delicious. We had asked for that to come out before dinner and it came out about halfway through. But that takes a while to make and better ill-timed coffee than cold food. The food as it was was delicious and piping hot. The staff here is very sweet and helpful. Very kind with explanations of the meals and Indian geography and history. We got a little lesson, which we both loved. I would absolutely return to Dosa Paragon!

That should have been a warning, but we didn't take heed. First we got a dosa which was REALLY good! A spicy chutney with potatoes. We were off to great start. Wooohooo! Then came a curry with a delicious cashew sauce trying its very best to save the awful rubbery vegetables floating in it. Though the sauce made a valient effort, I am, in the end, absolutely convinced that those were frozen carrots and green beans...either that or they were actually rubber. Then, we hit rock bottom with the "green salad". Some badly chopped tasteless vegetables lined up like they are ready to be stir-fried and no dressing. I guess you were supposed to squeeze a lemon on them. Yum, yes please, I would love thick slices of raw onion with some lemon squeezed on it, who wouldn't? So take a dosa to go is my advice. Or go somewhere else. Fake flowers on the table, so maybe those carrots and green beans were made of rubber.

Service is fast and the staff is friendly. We had the below items and can't wait to be back to try more on their menu. It seems they do refresh their menu quite a bit and the current menu is definitely bomb! 1. Hong Kong style Pork Sandwich - 12/10, amazing favors, very nicely done! 2.
