Headed out to Knight Sounds Entertainment today because of the New Year sale, at 50 cents a pound, who wouldn't stop by?! The sale began at 3pm, I arrived half an hour before and there was already a line out the door. Crazy. It took Carols and the crew a bit to set up and half an hour after the supposed start time, they started ushering people in the store. The area set up for the sale was rather small and it quickly got very crowded inside. All the records on sale were placed inside milk crates for patrons to look through. From what I could tell, most of the records on sale were mostly R&B and Hip-hop. I did manage to find some Country and Oldies (Ex: Bing Crosby) from the crates. An hour later, I walked out with 7 lbs of records (13 total), costing me only $3.50! Nice! Overall, not a bad haul. I will definitely be going back to Knight Sounds Entertainment to see if they have more selection of Country and Oldies. This should be a zero review .. I was digging for records for at least an hour and a half and when came out with a few that I've been looking for else where but couldn't find. When I finally brought them up to the counter, the guy started pulling out records and said that these were not for sale and that he was pulling them aside because they're reserved for a waiting list. What makes it worse, it was all the records that I really wanted and I was left with a few I was only getting for samples. I wasted so much time only to be scammed by these guys. They have no respect for the time I put in to dig. Don't ever shop here, you'll regret it. They only attend to you if you're a known DJ or one of their friends. read more

Carlos came through big time for my wife and I on our special day back in July. I procrastinated on booking our first DJ and with just over a month to go we had no one. Since our original DJ was booked, he suggested I go to Carlos, and my wife and I met him later that week. Our meeting went great and he made really great suggestions on how our reception should go with our choices of music Our reception started off a bit slow, but after dinner and our first dance it was poppin, just about every song on point and Carlos would come to is to make sure we were comfortable and also make suggestions on what should happen next, he would also be in communication with our caterer to make sure everything ran smoothly. Carlos went above and beyond and if my wife and I (and all our guest I'm sure) could give him more than five stars we would, it was a bit of a blessing I lagged on booking the first DJ then ran into Carlos. Today I had the opportunity to see Carlos in action not in a Party DJ capacity but as a compassionate human being helping out the family of a fellow DJ, DJ Cameron Paul. Carlos put together a funeral event by memorializing his friend Cameron Paul, Bay Area Club DJ, Radio DJ, and pioneer of mixing records. I am a Funeral director and the Memorial Service was very meaningful not only to the family but the community at large. Carlos is a complete artist. He put together the sights and sounds with music and the poster boards with special lighting. I personally remember Cameron Paul back in the days at Club City Nights in San Francisco when I was a young man. (Update on vinyl purchases and the shop only) I've known about Carlos' annual vinyl sale, but finally got to see it in person. Wow, crates and crates of gems everywhere. Lotsa cool records, a lottt of doubles for that beat juggling madness! Walked out with 45 pounds of vinyl for $20. (50 cents a pound and $5 discount if you shared the sale on FB). It was really cool to be with a bunch of vinyl diehards going through records. Carlos' kids running around. His son is really cool and I gotta give props to Carlos Senior for letting Junior take care of customers and their purchases. I grew up with that brick and mortar small biz environment at the San Jose Berryessa Flea Market and it just teaches you so much in all areas. Carlos is a really nice guy with your gear too, he took a look at my old Sennheiser headphones over a year ago for a connectivity problem. The case was sealed and it would've have to be broken to see the soldering and then be unusable. No charge to leave it there and have him go over it. My turntables are fine (AT-120's) but if I needed a tune up or upgrades, I'd definitely see Carlos. He still gigs with only vinyl, my gosh, steel crates and hauling heavy ass records. I gotta respect that. Everyone's going with Serato and Traktor and Recordbox these days but he just relishes his craft regardless, in his own words, "it makes me more unique." Looking forward to building a bigger vinyl collection this year to do more strictly vinyl sets for fun. read more

Awesome place, the person who works here (may be the owner) is one of the helpfulest people I've met that deals with customers. I'd seriously take you through everything he did nice that day, but I'd be a long review. Anyways, came here to get a stylus and "bam" the man busts out a whole cartridge with a stylus that fit mines....he takes apart his needle, hands me the stylus and says "this should work, slap this baby on there". Whatta you know, the man is a clear genius! So I ask the dude how much the stylus was considering that he took his needle apart just to make mines work. He answers with a...."lets see, I don't want to over charge you, then again, I'm not sure how much these suckers go for now, so how bout you just give me $15 for it?" and there you go, I toss him his loot and I go walking out the door. As I'm about to head out the parking lot, the man comes storming outside with a bunch of records and stops me from leaving (i thought, man this guy is gunna try to sell me some records that I probably don't need) and says "hey there buddy, here's some records for you to mess around with at home, enjoy". I politely thanked him and headed off. Yeah, the dude was awesome, there was more than just that that he did to make myself feel welcome in the store, but thought I'd just share one quick little story. BTW those records he gave me were some late 90's early 2000 hits, he gave me some legit ass records. If I ever need DJ stuff, I'm definitely coming back here. I'm writing not a review of the record shop, but of the DJ that owns it: Carlos. He DJd our wedding in June... Wow, we got so lucky. He was the BOMB. He was very meticulous; sitting down with my husband and me beforehand to get a feel of what kind of music we liked, what kind of crowd we would have, etc. We had a huuuge range of music that we wanted (reggae, early 90s hip hop, cumbia, marimba, reggaeton, oldies, 80s, and even a few Irish songs). He was able to do it all! He introduced the wedding party and the different events going on during the wedding, but he wasn't one of those DJs that spends all kinds of time on the mic cracking jokes and talking, which we liked. Also he is bilingual, which we needed as we had both English and Spanish-speaking guests. But the best thing about Carlos was that he kept the dancefloor packed ALL NIGHT, from the very first song to the very last. I have never seen such a packed dancefloor; he seemed to know just the right songs to play at just the right times. I mean he had everyone dancing; the old folks, the young folks...everyone kept telling me how much fun they had dancing because the DJ was so great! I got compliments on him for DAYS! I would recommend him to anyone; he really was the best. If you need a DJ for an upcoming event, you need to give him a call! You won't be sorry. read more

If you've been DJing since before serato you need to take a trip down to Knight Sounds. 7 or 8 years ago this kind of record shop used to be easy to find. Not the kind of record shop that sold records to sit at home and listen to on your hi-fi system but records pressed as tools for working DJ's; new 12", DJ Comps,and scratch records. A trip to night sounds will send you on an emotional journey reflecting on days gone by and questioning what the future will bring. Also, you will go home with a stack of records you completely forgot existed because they haven't been posted on YouTube yet. Yes, I have shed a tear while smoked out listening to my new stack of dusty old records from Knight Sounds. He will give recommendations on how to layout the event as well as tips on how to save money. I don't think there is any other person that would go above and beyond in customer service as he does. As my past review indicates, I've been coming here off and on for the last 8 yrs since I moved to San Jose. Recently I had 2 of my DJ mixers act up with some cutting in and out volume madness and so I drove over to see if Carlos could help me. He wasn't there during normal business hours the first time, so I made a return visit. Here's the deal - he now picks up his kids around 2:30-4pm and also coaches part time for their sports teams, so his advice to me was to call first before you stop by. No problem with that! So I brought my first mixer in and instead of telling me it will be ready in a few days or a week, he says, "hang on". He's cleans up the all faders and and checks one of the jacks and now it's working perfectly. All in ten minutes while I waited! He knew exactly what to do when I didn't. Thanks Carlos! Great store and even better owners. My son although 13, is an aspiring DJ. He wants to rock vinyl instead of CD's. We did not know that this store even existed until we pulled and advertisement off of Craigslist. We were attracted to this store for Vinyl only. However, upon getting there we were amazed at the amount of DJ product, records, rentals, microphones, speakers, cd's etc available. The store is very small. But hey that added to the ambience. If you are looking for Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, and DJ Tools this is the place for you. Dennis and Carlos were very helpful. Dennis offered great advice to my son in ways to market his DJ skills. He even offered the opportunity for him to watch him DJ a gig so that he could pick up some pointers. The prices for the merchandise are fair. Picked up a large stck of vinyl for less than 40 bucks that would have cost us over 80 bucks at Streetlight. The amount of old school was amazing.
