Well our beautiful black standard Elke will be 11 years old on June 15 2014. We bought her from Skansen as a pup. She is hands down the most sweet tempered animal and gorgeous still No one believes that she is almost 11. She has been perfect for us as she was our first Standard which is quite different than a Mini. We would go back to Skansen again and we hope they will still be breeding dogs when we are ready. I too have had several giants from Skansen Kennel through the years. Wonderful, loving dogs. None lived past 8 years. The first died at 2 years from an autoimmune disease (and I followed her diet) over $5000 in vet bills, my last skansen dog died at 8 from cancer (I, and my vet, lost my heart with that one). I went to a different breeder after that and have a 12 1/2 year old that has some Skansen breeding. Wonderful and beautiful dog. So far we have had 2 toes amputated to try to curb her toe cancer. She also early on lost the vision in one eye from an autoimmune problem. The heartbreak is unbearable. read more

Our two mini Schnauzers just turned 1 year old and we searched all over United States to replace our dog that died suddenly at 9 years old. I bought a pet quality P/S Giant from Skansen in 2000. I followed the raw food plans and got him an abundance of excercise, in ball fetching, walking, and "carting" using a "springer and a mountain bike" I would often have him pull me to a dog park about 2 miles away, where he would play with many other dogs, socialize with people and patrol the fence line, inspecting each post and making each one to communicate his work to all other dogs doing a similar job. Sylvia was always patient with my questions and made sure I was able to care for my Yesterday's Romeo perfectly. At two years I took Romeo to her for a show evaluation. I expected to hear "nice pet quality" but I thought his movement was as good or better than any dog I had seen in a show. Sylvia said that I needed to get his teeth whiter and correct some minor coat flaunts, but that if I did those things and campaigned him, that he would get his championship. Unfortunately I had just lost my company and it took me over two years, to get back on my feet. I never was able to afford the travel to get Romeo's championship. However I am ever grateful to Sylvia for the support and kindness that she showed me over the years. Just before Romeo turned 12 he developed severe anemia and my vet determined that it would be a losing fight that would unlikely extend Romeo's life for long, so we helped him go to sleep for his long nap. He was cremated and I was able to spread his ashes at a few of his fovorite places. Romeo's only fault was that he was sometimes over protective of me when large men with loud voices would approach us without me being able to introduce them properly. He adored women, children, small dogs and cats. read more

We have purchased two Schnauzers from Skansen and would not recommend them. Our Lucy was 2 when she had cancer and at 6yrs had brain tumor and died suddenly. It's heartbreakingShe was white and I suspect the breeding was inferior. read more

Sylvia breeds a gorgeous dog. I have owned giants from Skansen for nearly 30 years. They are beautiful, intelligent, vibrant, smart, and entertaining. I can't say enough about the character of this breed. They aren't for everyone due to their boundless energy and need for good training; however, if you are able to handle, train, and love a Giant Schnauzer there is no better breed. It is unfortunate, therefore, that I have just put down my last giant. Over the years, I have only owned Skansen dogs and I have noticed a trend. My first lived to 15 with no health problems. My next also lived to a nice old age and then the problems began. Each subsequent giant came down with toe cancer. The first at an older age but the next at age 4!!!!! He went on to develop two more toe cancers and had 3 toes amputated, endured the pain and recovery, never complained, and then the last cancer appeared in his jaw and was diagnosed as bone cancer. He was only 9. Coincidentally, the previous dog with toe cancer also had cancer in his jaw subsequent to the toe cancer. Now I know Sylvia will deny that she has cancer in her line, say that I wasn't feeding the dog properly, that somehow it was my fault. It isn't anyone's fault actually, and I don't blame Sylvia as she loves the breed and would never deliberately do anything to harm the line; however, she has. Inadvertently, predispositions for toe cancer, epilepsy (yes, I had one who was epileptic), thyroid problems, etc are in the line. To make matters worse Skansen breeding is in so many Giants because of her prolific breeding program that it is nearly impossible to acquire a Giant that doesn't have Skansen breeding in the lineage. It isn't just Giants as nearly all breeds have health concerns specific to their breed, but denying that there are health problems in a breed is reprehensible. Not telling people who want to buy a giant that there are potential health problems doesn't allow owners to look for the problems and perhaps catch a toe cancer or other problem early when it is treatable with good results! Blaming a health concern always on diet and not following feeding recommendations is ridiculous. I followed all of Sylvia's recommendations, only to discover with subsequent dogs that her recommendations change. One year it was a specific dog food, then cooking chicken and rice in a crock pot, then raw diet only, then we weren't allowed to give vaccines as that caused problems, the list is endless. I am writing this as a warning to those who want a Giant. If you want one, and get a healthy dog, I am so envious. Be prepared, however, to save up a bit of cash to cover the health problems if they occur. Each toe amputation cost me over 2 thousand dollars. They are a wonderful breed and I said goodbye to my last giant yesterday as he died in my arms. He was an AKC Champion with 4 majors, a beautiful boy, who would let a child climb on him, pull children in a wagon, protect his home, let anyone pet him, could open doors and let himself out for a walk, and kept me warm at night. My husband and I picked out a Giant Schnauzer from Skansen back in 2008. I was very excited about getting one of these dogs. However our experience with Skansen was a little bizarre. Just driving into the place you get the picture, signs telling you to turn around if you don't have an appointment, fences galore with Llamas and lots and lots of dogs. Too many dogs to have been socialized and cared for properly. We fell in love with our pup and going on that emotion, purchased him and came back for him a week later in spite of the questionable feelings we had about the place. He was terrified of EVERYTHING! Our other dog was a life saver as the pup would only ease into things very slowly if she guided him. Also his love of food was really helpful at lowering his fear of every basic thing in life. Watching Cesar Millan helped a lot too, "just being a leader."I trained him very slowly to tolerate clippers using hotdogs. I don't know how they got him clipped when he lived at the kennel. I speculate that the experience was traumatizing due to the enormous number of dogs they had to groom there. We socialized the heck out of him and he's come a long way but he still has fear issues. About a year after purchasing him, we received a notice from the AKC that the litter he came from did not have the father that was stated on his pedigree (found through genetic testing). He would be given only some kind of acknowledgement of the AKC and not a full pedigree. These last issues are not important to us but beware if you are a show person. Incidentally we were told differing things about the price and were ultimately charged a show quality price. The dog has a white marking on his chest well over their quarter sized limit. Again we don't care about that but you do have to be assertive with them. We love him very much, he's a character and gets tons of complements. I have said many times that it is lucky that he is truly gorgeous as it has helped him to have numerous people come up and want to talk about him, get a photo with him and sometimes pet him. I just have to watch that he doesn't lurch at people! Interestingly he is very gentle with children and very elderly people. I have met several people that have gotten dogs from Skansen, some liked it and some felt like we did and some felt much worse about it. Unless they've severely reduced the number of dogs that they have at their ranch, I would not go there again. I believe it's much better to purchase a dog from a home environment. Update: Our dog died of lymphoma summer of 2015 at 7 years old. R.I.P. love. read more

I am giving Skansen Kennels a 5 star rating for the overall expertise and advise they have given our family in rehabilitating a pup we purchased sight unseen from a different breeder. The pup that exited the crate looked nothing like the picture emailed to us. The pup was skin and bones, and it's teeth were rotting. We were told the pup was crate trained, but it only used the crate as it's bathroom. The breeder was not going to refund our money, so before trying to figure out what to do, I decided to give Skansen Kennels a call. Within that wonderful phonecall, I was educated as to how to rehabilitate and help this pup. (For the first month this pup just lied on the floor half dead.) After taking Sylvia's advice we now have a happy little sweetheart. I highly recommend Skansen's and look forward to doing business with them in the future. When we started looking for a puppy, I knew I wanted a Schnauzer. Specifically, I wanted a black Giant Schnauzer, but I knew it was impractical for our schedule and living in a house with barely any yard in the city. So we decided on a black mini schnauzer. Sylvia and Laina at Skansen had other ideas however. They work very hard to ensure that you are matched with the best puppy possible to fit your home. So while I wanted a black mini female, we left Skansen with a white mini male, who's submissive nature made him more compatible with our bossy female Chihuahua. For a mere $650, we brought home a fully vaccinated puppy with ears and tail done, as well as 3 gigantic envelopes full of videos, audio manuals, and booklets of natural health, feeding, training, and grooming videos. Sylvia has been breeding Schnauzers for 50 years and has bred over 1000 champions. Her ranch is beautiful, the dogs are all gorgeous and clearly enjoying their lives, and a full staff is ever present tending to every doggie need. It is a very impressive set up. We chose Skansen because of their great reputation and the satisfaction of others who have purchased their dogs from her. Additionally, she has the only kennel I know of with 10 generations of completely naturally raised dogs, and that was pretty important to us. I can not recommend this kennel enough if you are in the market for a purebred puppy. They have all 3 sizes of Schnauzer in AKC accepted colors only, in show and pet quality. read more

Almost two years ago, I brought home my beautful black giant schnauzer from Skansen Kennel - his name is Zorro, the love of my life. Skansen does an excellent job raising the pups until they are ready to go home. I was given plenty of DVDs and other information complete with the care and feeding of schnauzers - a full operating manual. I wish I could give zorro a companion, but there's not enough room for 2 in my san francisco north beach flat. Zorro is so well-tempered and gets along with all the other "regulars" in the park. We got our pup , Black Standard Schnauzer, Haddy 10 mo. ago from Skansens. Sylvia and her staff are great. Our pup did have her beginning puppy shots and we were also provided a record of the shots. Sylvia does encourage feeding a Raw Diet which we have found to be amazing. Haddy is a healthy happy girl. I would recommend Skansen Kennel hands down! I have had a Giant and Standard from Skansen and I have nothing but good things to say. I maintain the raw meat diet and I am very happy with this breeder. I love how the dogs are bred for quality and character and she produces some of the best show dogs available yet the dogs are still free to actually "be dogs" and play in the dirt and outdoors as dogs should be! My fiance grew up with a giant schnauzer. He was insistent that when we got a dog it would have to be a giant. I did much research and found Skansen Kennels. I was even directed back to Skansen on my search from other breeders! Our dog Millie was born on my fiances birthday. They are soul-mates. People are constantly stopping us on the street saying "What a beautiful dog! Where did you get that dog!?" Millie is string but very sweet .She has such a great personality. We love her so much! I have a 11 year old mini schnauzer who is the love of our family since he was 8 weeks old. He was not purchased from Skansen however, while visiting a Petco one of the employees had a badge on with a picture of her giant schnauzer which she purchased from Skansen Kennels. My neighbors who loved my schnauzer decided to purchase a schnauzer puppy and I recalled my Petco experience and happened somehow to remember the name Skansen,,,, so our friends traveled to Skansen with the intent to purchase a 8 week old puppy only to leave with a 5 month old while female mini schnauzer they named Mia. Due to them being in their 70's it was advised to get a dog a little older than 8 weeks... Needless to say they are over the moon in love with this dog. She is a active, beautiful, sweet dog! My husband and I purchased our first P/S Giant Schnauzer in 2006 (Elsa) from Skansen Kennel. Shortly there after we adopted one of Sylvia's retired Champion's (Business as Usual), we named her Morgen (black). Morgan passed away a couple years ago and Elsa is now 10 1/2 years old. We are awaiting our next giant from Sylvia later this summer. Skansen is a great place. We dealt mostly with Laina and she was a wonderful representative for Skansen. She's very knowledgable and her love of dogs comes shining through as we spoke with her. I highly recommend Skansen to any one who wants to purchase from a breeder who truly cares about the dogs. A visit to the kennel will result in you seeing many, many dogs who are healthy, happy and friendly. The dogs are allowed to grow up outside and "just be dogs" before we constrain them into our home. Elsa is such a big love and she loves everyone. Anyone visiting our home, Elsa is sure they've come to see her. She is extremely gentle with babies and children even though she wasn't raised with any in our home. This intelligent, gentle breed is a great dog for any family. Skansen Kennel provides a wonderful dog loving service When I set off to purchase a Giant Schnauzer (my first one) I looked high and low for a good breeder and one that would stand behind the purchase. When I contacted Sylvia at SKansen Kennel she was wonderful. I told her what I wanted and the personality I was looking for. She reserved the Top Show Dog for me and the next thing I knew my little bundle of love was on a airplane headed to Texas. I named my new dog Maxine. Max had the most loving personality that I have ever seen in a dog. She was beautiful as a puppy and grew to be even more elegant of a dog. Throughout my dogs life I would contact Sylvia for advise and she was always helpful and full of very good suggestions. If Sylvia was not available her staff was also helpful and caring. As I got to know the breed through the years I had less reason to call her. Max was an amazing animal friend and EVERYONE that met her LOVED her. She was like a princess everyone wanted to know her, touch her, hug her or just gaze at her. Her personality and beauty was like a magnet we got to know more people because of her. Max past away this year and although I know I will not find another exactly the same I would never even think of purchasing from any other breeder than Skansen Kennel. I have been watching dogs from this kennel since the late 1980's. I still have information they sent me from 1992. But it wasn't until (almost) 6 years ago that I was able to take the plunge. I'm a professional dog trainer & grew up with parents who bred high quality dogs. My problem was I needed a dog who was strong enough to be a guardian but gentle enough to live with tiny Chihuahuas. That's NO small task. I was waffling back & forth between Giant & Standard, black or Salt & Pepper. Decisions, decisions. Skansen provided me with far more information than any other breed I've ever known. Her staff talked to me, answering questions & giving insight. And when I decided Giant she took our family's special needs (gentle with tiny dogs, hard on bad guys) into consideration & chose a very special puppy. Her first month with us would find her trying to be a Chihuahua, complete with attempting to go under the couch. LOL But the excellence doesn't end when they have your $ & you have the puppy. I'm a pro at raising the breeds I'm familiar with but this was my 1st Giant. Any time I wrote to Ms. Hammarstrom asking: 1) is this normal for a Giant pup or 2) is this an individual quirk, I received back a prompt reply with an answer & gentle guidance. (Note to Giant puppy owners: hang in there through the puppy phase, it's going to get beautiful :) Ms. Hammarstrom truly loves Schnauzers & cares about dogs & the people who love them & treat them as family. I have a beautiful, HEALTHY, intelligent dog who can be trusted in the house & with my family. I would recommend Skansen Kennels & Ms. Hammarstrom as a breeder of excellence. I also know if there were ever a problem, I got my dog from someone I can trust & count on. Basically if she says, "do x", we do it. Her advice has been that sound. I have NEVER had a negative experience with Sylvia or her operation. My six Babies have brought joy and laughter to many people; and they have literally saved both Myself and my Wife from dangerous situations. I own a 3 year old GS "Greta", from Skansen, and my daughter has a 6 year old. These girls are incredible. Happy, healthy and wise. Sylvia is always available to answer questions, and really knows and cares about the dogs she breeds. They are extremely healthy, however Greta did experience some urinary leaking when she was 2 1/2. I spayed her when she was just a month shy of 2, and now wish I had waited a few more months to do so. The temperament of these dogs is awesome. Both girls are friendly, and although mine is exuberant, and my daughter's girl is calm and a bit shy. They do not have a mean bone in their bodies. GS need EXERCISE. If you are not someone who gets out and runs, or walks, please get a dog other than a GS. I also have minis, and have my entire life. My minis are not from Skansen, so I can't comment about them besides the breed is terrific, and not as demanding for exercise, although they still benefit and enjoy 2 or 3 miles every morning. read more

We recently adopted one of Skansen Kennels retired mini schnauzer breeders. This dog is the best dog we have ever had. She is smart, healthy and happy. She adapted easily to our home environment. She learns fast and has a wonderful personality. I believe that Skansen takes excellent care of their dogs and they do their best to ensure that their dogs will continue to get the best of care in their new homes. We have had 4 mini schnauzers previous to adopting from Skansen and we would go to this kennel first if we ever decide to adopt another Schnauzer. Skansen Kennel is a Puppy Mill DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM SKANSEN KENNEL. I purchased 2 mini Schnauzers from Skansens, the first was 3 years old paid $800.00 the second was 4 months, paid $800.00. Both dogs were very sick. The Old Lady that owns the place gave me back the money for the 3 year old after I wrote her a letter saying the dog had to have 18 rotten teeth pulled and a number of other issues! But that was nothing, the puppy which I have had for just over a year has cost me over $6000.00! She stopped making tears at 6 months old, the Old Lady blew me off this time because she knew what it cost to take care of a sick dog. I had to have a tube from her saliva glands into her eyes so she didn't go blind and she will have to be medicated two to three times every day for the rest of her life. The Old Lady will take no responsiability for her bad breeding. Why she is still in business I'll never understand. I hope everyone reading this that cares about animals will pass on the word and put her out of business and save the lives of so many sick dogs. Two out of two isn't very good odds and speakes volumes about her breeding ability! TRUST ME WHEN I SAY SHE IS NOTHING BUT A PUPPY FARMER. read more

I owned a Giant Pepper and Salt from Skansens however he died two years ago from his second round of the bloat. I am sorry Sylvia was upset when I told her, it was not a criticism but informational, Sweet , my Giant, was the absolute love of my life. We did therapy work for 5 years and he was the absolute best. We also worked with autistic children. I would buy from Sylvia again but I feel she would not sell me another. I did recommend a friend of mine to her and he is very pleased with his Giant. read more

I, since 1997 I have received from Sylvia 2 beautiful dogs. Both Show quality ( both in the top 20 in conformation) in 2000.However They both had qualities that would make them very suitable in any environment . Whether it be living with small children or being assistance for me in small ways with my disabilities. Well we received our 2nd Giant from Sylvia 3 years ago. Bentley Winston. He is a big boy at almost 4 weighing at 112 lbs. He is 32 inches at the withers and is a people stopper. We bought him as a pet because one of his testicles didn't drop, now we r ready for our third. Other breeders tell us that he is one of the most beautiful Giants they have seen and ask f we show him. I met an owner (and the dog) of a Skansen giant schnauzer and I was impressed at the fantastic temperment of this dog. When I conducted research I found this breader be the best. When I arived to pick up my mini white schnauzer there were no disapointments. The alledged accusations of 'puppy mill' are very deceitful and erroneous. read more
