A friend suggested this business to do some scans of my original artwork. Their website has a page on copystand photography, which is the service I wanted, where they advertise the cost of each shot at $50 for image that are 16x20 or smaller.... I had 3 original illustrations to photograph. In the first sentence of my original email I incorrectly mentioned 'scanning', (scanning is more expensive), but then mentioned specifically copystand photography in the same email. The first estimate I received was for $375 + taxes, so $225 more that what they advertise on their own website. When I asked about the disconnect between the estimate and what is advertised on the website I received a 2nd estimate for $75 per shot. Still $25 more expensive than what is on the website.I asked why it was still higher that what's on their website and I was told: "$50 is for sizes up to 11 x 17. Artwork in the size that is 16 x 20 would be $75 per piece.", again contradicting what their own website says (see attached screenshot). So in the end I kept searching for a cheaper service and I found one but the hassling by Skink Ink was off putting. read more

This review is for their scanning services, which I do not recommend unless you are familiar with copyright or you are the original creator of your art. It sounds like their printing services are worth it based on other reviews. I came in with several paintings by an ancestor that were recently handed down to me. I called in to ask about their copyright policy (after seeing a disclaimer on their website) and was told I was good for their scanning services given the info I just described. So I trekked out to their studio to drop off the paintings, greeted by a super friendly staff member. I was told to remove the paintings from their frames for their storage, which I proceeded to do. A senior staff member, who I'm assuming is an owner, came by a few minutes later and asked me about copyright. I gave the owner the same info I did over the phone, at which point he proceeded to ask me about the painter in what seemed to be an increasingly berating and interrogating manner. He Googled his name with no apparent or clear goal in mind, then suddenly walked out to a back room and did not come back. I was confused at that point if I should keep removing the paintings from the frames or if they didn't want to provide their services. The staff woman I was speaking to was also confused. I asked her to clarify, so she went to ask the owner. She came back to tell me they wouldn't work with me at that time... something about maternal inheritance vs paternal; it sounded pretty unclear and totally uninformed, especially after just reading through some US copyright law to understand more about copyright inheritance (and given the age of the works). I am giving one star because the owner was rude, and didn't have the decency to explain to me nor his staff why he wouldn't provide his services nor how I could proceed to work with them. I left their studio with a pretty sour taste in my mouth. read more

I recently started painting again and putting my illustrations on instagram. There was this influx of orders that I was not quipped to deal with. I'm a graphic designer so I know about printing processes and paper quality and knew what I wanted if I was going to print anything. I'm extremely picky. I researched forever, not wanting to work with a big company because I wanted them to care. I completely lucked out with Philip and his staff. Daisy has been great btw. If I make a mistake or am unhappy with the print for any reason (my fault) they work with me to fix it right away. The turn around is wonderful, max a couple of days. I live in Harlem but willingly travel there a couple of times a week to pick it up. I can't say enough nice things about them. I've worked with other print shops that couldnt care less, so Skink Ink is a refreshing change. read more

I have only had the finest of experiences multiple times since 2012 having my work scanned for printing at Skink-Ink. Philip Riley has been generous with his time, knowledge, guidance and very respectful of my work. He is always responsive to my inquiries. The work I do is very delicate (some pieces have taken hundreds of hours to complete) and can be easily damaged. I know when I take my work to Skink-Ink that the work is "safe". I am pretty picky in the quality that I want with reproductions of my work. I have walked into Skink-Ink where my original and the reproduction were side by side. I had to get right up to the work to know which piece was the original. It was only the edge of the reproduction paper that gave me a clue. The services that Philip provides at Skink-Ink are meticulous and professional. Frankly, it an experience I to look forward to. Currently, I am not in NYC and need the services that Skink-Ink provides. I called Philip and he very graciously guided me in what to look for locally in the scanning services in need. Skink-Ink is a small, one-man operation I stumbled upon in my search for a Brooklyn-based giclée printer. Philip-who runs the whole thing-is attentive, patient, and knows what he's doing. An artist himself, he's easy to communicate with and understands where you're coming from. I'm too lazy to travel from Manhattan to Brooklyn, so I have no idea if Skink is run out of the back of a van, or a vast, imposing factory, but as an online outlet they've been terrific to work with. I'm an amateur illustrator who works mostly digitally, but every once in a while my friends or family think one of my drawings would look better on a wall than a screen. Whatever. But it's kinda true. I've used them twice, and the prints exceeded my expectations both times, making my phony baloney digital "watercolors" look almost legit. Heavy expensive paper helps. Turnaround time has been ridiculously fast; prints ready and shipped in a day or two. I'm new to this, so I'm not sure how competitive the pricing is; I guess if I get serious I'll shop around a bit. Of course, if you're used to slick online ordering and payment systems, be aware that, while completely functional, their system is adorably quaint (fill out a web form with a link to your art, get a pdf invoice, pay via PayPal). Like I say, it works fine and it's perfectly easy, but if you're the suspicious type you'll probably find yourself triple-checking that you're not wiring funds to Nigeria or something. read more

Sent them my file via Google drive (read: super easy) realized I messed up something, sent my new file and got an updated wrote in a few min. [taking a deep breath] I cannot believe how ugly Philip Riley can be when he deems customers unworthy of his services. I'm truly shocked. How any small business person thinks they can conduct business by behaving like a petulant child, hurling petty insults at prospective customers, is beyond me. All I needed was two prints. That's all, very easy. I stopped by the studio to deliver the digital files, along with sample prints of both on my preferred paper stock. Phillip was not in, but his assistant was very nice. I asked to see a sample of the paper stock I was interested in; she couldn't help me with that, but said that Phillip would be able to show me a sample when I return to see the test print. I left with a good feeling about them. Next day or so, I get an email. My proofs were ready. I call ahead as requested. I arrive, no Philip. Again. Assistant hands me the proofs. They're perfect, I say. I just need to see that sample of the paper stock. Do you have the sample? No, sorry, she says, but Philip can answer my questions. I say, okay, I just need to confirm because Philip has been quoting me "Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Natural," but Hahnemuhle doesn't make a 'Natural,' only 'White' or 'Bright White.' Okay, she says, "Philip can answer your questions but he's out right now. I'll have him call you." I never got a phone call, but I did receive an email informing me that my prints were ready along with an invoice for a WILDLY inflated figure that was more than $100 over the quote. A stream of back and forth emails follow in which Philip gives me some BLAH BLAH BLAH about why the price was off and admits he printed on the wrong paper stock (if only he called me!), all the while never answering the burning question: IS IT 'WHITE' OR 'BRIGHT WHITE'? Obviously, all this silliness gives me the gut feeling that I should ditch these people and find another printer who doesn't play games. I mean, how difficult is it to have paper samples to show prospective clients? Here's where I freely admit that I stalled for a few days. I contacted other printers but got nowhere. I changed my mind about the order a couple of times. Plus, the idea of having to make another trip just to see a piece of paper which they should have been able to show me during either one of my previous visits just burned my butt. In the end though, I decide to give them a chance. Philip responds by declining my business. He cites the 'back and forth' and all his other work as reason for refusing to print my photographs. I laugh out loud at the part about not wanting to create 'bad feelings,' Apoplectic, I call him to register my outrage and am taken aback at his antagonistic and downright b*tchy attitude. Unfortunately, I realized later that he still has my sample prints, and since retrieving them in person was out of the question at this point, I email him requesting that he mail them to me. Here's the exchange: Me: "I left sample prints of my photographs with Daisy on my first visit. I'd like them returned. Can you please confirm that they will be mailed out before you leave the country? Address is..." Him: "We do charge for shipping: $6.50 for USPS and $10 for FedEx because that is what it cost us to send things. If you really want them shipped I'll ask you for the shipping cost. I don't expect you'll to want to do that and why would you for prints that must have cost $2.50 to produce. And if you won't then why would we?" I mean, really. Was that response necessary? I don't think so. In summary, there are plenty of other businesses that do exactly what Philip Riley does, and they do so professionally without insulting customers. In fact, San Francisco's Photoworks SF is one of them, and they produce incredible work at reasonable prices. I highly recommend you work with them or any one of the number of other printers in the NYC area. Just steer clear of this one. UPDATE: Philip Riley's response to my review is awesome. "They're hiding my imaginary good reviews and only publishing bad ones!" Riiiight. Clearly, Philip Riley has an ax to grind. He needs to wake up and understand that he can't mistreat customers and expect that it won't result in bad word of mouth. I'm not the only Yelper to publish Mr. Riley's exact words, and that's because they speak loudly and clearly for themselves. Also: in his response, Philip Riley tries to pull the "small business" card; the very reason I chose to patronize Skink Ink, as well as many other businesses, is precisely BECAUSE they are small businesses. I will choose a small mom-and-pop over a box store any day, because it's been my experience that small businesses value each customer and provide more personalized, friendly and attentive customer service. Petty, childish and unnecessary insults like the ones quoted above prove that Philip Riley and Skink Ink do not value their customers. read more

These guys did a phenomenal job with a portrait I drew for my mother's 60th. I wanted to make copies of the original for myself and for my two siblings, so I walked on into this conveniently-located and SUPER cool workspace and was promptly helped by one of the employees here. Explained what I wanted done, chose my paper stock, and was out the door having paid in 15 mins. Got email proofs later that day, walked in to confirm, and had my copies within 48 hours. Not a huge or complicated job, but executed well nonetheless. The result was fantastic and the recipients of the copies (myself and my sibs) are all very happy with them! Looks just as good, maybe better, than original b/c I bumped up the contrast a bit in areas. **ONE HUGE PROBLEM which I will say does not detract from the overall rating** b/c it did not affect the result: the person who had been using photoshop to edit the original for printing did not do a good job at all IMO. When I came in to review the prints I was lucky to be in the presence of the owner, who edited his employee's work to my satisfaction and that made the results what they were. MORAL OF THE STORY: be very vocal about what you want if you think the proofs are less-than-satisfactory. Don't be afraid to take up their time -- they are happy to help you and want the results to be the best possible. I'm very glad I spoke up because it made all the difference. Bonus: great hours, great turnaround time, amazing local art all over the walls of the studio. THANKS guys!! read more

My print looks absolutely stunning and to have it executed so quickly and in such a friendly manner was unexpected for a first time experience. I've used these folks twice now and have had great results both times. one was a stretched canvas print of a photograph i'd taken in Montana. I was surprised how well it enlarged given that the original image was only 10MP. The other was a series of large prints for the walls at our wedding reception that were foam-core mounted.
