I'm a regular at this bar. I'm one of the few customers who actually enjoys traditional country music, so I frequent this place to hear some good jams and sip a beer. I bring my friends who visit from out of town and always tip well. I've even tipped the busser who is such a hard worker. Last night I came in after a long shift and just wanted a glass of wine. Knowing this place isn't known for their wine, I was fine with whatever they had. The canned wine (this was fine, I drink canned rose all the time) happened to have gone bad. It was carbonated, which means it's not good to drink. This happens from time to time so I really wasn't bothered by that. I asked the bartender if I can please have a Guinness (my go to) instead, and I'm happy to pay for the wine. She handed me a Guinness with a full head, really not the way it should be poured. I must of shown some annoyance on my face because she assured me it would settle down. I work at an Irish pub, this was NOT a well poured Guinness. I waited a few minutes for it to settle, then she came back, grabbed my beer away from me and said "What do you want? I can tell you aren't happy." At which point I felt way too uncomfortable to ask for anything else, and basically felt bullied so I just left. I've never been approached this abrasively by a bartender before, and was a little heart broken that a place I've been so loyal to would treat me so poorly. Please, don't treat your regular customers this way - especially solo female customers. Came to Williamsburg a bit earlier than expected and had some time before an event so decided to find a nearby bar. And guess which bar happened to be right across the street? Yes! You guess it....To be honest, what really got me was the hype about Willie's frozen coffee drink. Since it was happy hour time the atmosphere was chill with groups of friends conversing with one another. The bar itself is a bit spacious with couch seating and a good amount of chairs located at the bar. Decent selection of beers with your usual draft selection combined with some craft Ipas, stouts, and pale ales. I went with coffee drink which did not disappoint one bit. The slushy coffee flavored drink topped off with whiskey just hits the spot (especially on a nice sunny day). Be sure to mix the whiskey into your drink as it's served as a floater. I highly recommend this drink if ever give this bar a try. The bartender was attentive, super chill and held a good conversation. The service was good and you even get free fresh peanuts which you can pretty much drop anywhere in the bar (even on the floor), but since I'm not a savage I gladly cleaned up after myself. I'm pretty sure one of the times I'm back in the burg, I'll be making my way back to Skinny Dennis to enjoy one, two, three or four (I mean.... who's really counting???) of Willie's coffee drinks. read more

This. This is a real bar. A bar you could fall in love with. Evidence: The beer is cheap (it's $4 for 24 oz of Coors Original). The music is live (in more ways than one). No cover either. Given that I have been afforded the pleasure to move to Williamsburg by the graces of God (that's what my dad asks me to call him) and the sudden success of my online turquoise company (GypsyWanderingWitchJunk follow me on etsy!) The bartenders looked pretty busy at the time but my assertiveness shows my self worth so I kept waving until they came over. I was gonna go for the "coffee thing" but given that I'm allergic to caffeine I decided to go for a beer but because I'm allergic to gluten I just sat there and went uuuuhhhhhmmm until the bartender grabbed the Titos bottle and poured it with soda and a lime. Did you know that they can read minds here!? How did they know that I like my drinks like I like my lovers? Completely see through and devoid of all taste. They'll make sure you to try their best to make you smile with the respectful yet cheesy jokes you make. Coming to Skinny Dennis, whether you are a first timer or a veteran, you know it is a fantastic dive bar. If they play music, it is always a better bonus. Coming to a bar after quarantine can be intimidating. The moment I walked in, Mike was incredibly welcoming and made sure they made you laugh, even with the cheesiest jokes possible. Without hesitation or a break of their smile, they made sure your u were welcomed. Mike had no issue telling wholesome dad jokes. Please talk to Mike! I spent more time talking than drinking and I regret nothing, even as I was on a date. As others have mentioned, get the coffee drink. Maybe multiple cups. They're served in those blue Anthora-style NYC cups, which is a nice touch. The bar itself is pretty small, but seems to attract a lively crowd. It's honky tonk themed. Or maybe Willie Nelson themed. While we were there, there was a large group of true-blood Texans, cowboy hats and all. So I guess it's somewhat legit. Ms. Pacman machine. Some weird tabletop bowling game. Had high hopes for this place. Reviews are really good, pictures looked awesome. As they say, expectation vs. reality, right? Showed up last night and the place was MUCH smaller than the pictures made it out to be. The band was already going so the place was packed to the brim. The bouncer standing outside the door should have been our grim warning for the evening. Stared us down, didn't speak, didn't even crack a smile. Way to be personable, guy, you're not intimidating anyone, you're just kinda nasty. We proceeded past him anyway and walked into what I could only refer to this bar as a steel-tinned sardine can stuffed with way too many sardines. Took us probably eight minutes to try to navigate through a crowd of some of the NASTIEST and RUDEST people I've ever had this displeasure of encountering in my entire life. People who don't know the phrase, "Excuse me" or "I'm sorry." Elbows being thrown left and right, shoving, people blatantly looking you dead in the eye as you're trying to move to order a drink and they just stand there, do not attempt to let you pass, just look at you and turn back around. We finally get to the bar, which is literally probably 10 to 15 feet from the front door, and my friend gets close and says to a guy who already has a drink, "Hey can I get in here to order a drink?" He looks at her and says, "Oh, no. You can go to the other end of the bar." The other end of the bar being where the band was playing, with no possible way of even getting there. My friend had this look of shock, and then it was my turn to take matters into my own hands, I made my way through and pushed him out of the way. As soon as I got to the bar the bartender asked for my order so that was good service. Here's a tip patrons. It's called BAR ETIQUETTE. If you have a drink, STEP AWAY FROM THE BAR. You're just being an a-hole to everyone else trying to order something. My friend ordered the cider, I got the margarita. She took one sip and left it on the bar. Not a good cider, more like apple cider vinegar. Margarita was pretty good, very tart, but very strong. One pint glass and I was definitely feeling it. I can't say we experienced any part of Skinny Dennis. We didn't even get to listen to the band. I pounded back that margarita and we high-tailed it out of there. On the way out we got stuck behind a guy trying to leave as well. He was dwarfed by two larger guys and neither of them would let him through. He was being very nice, trying to tap them to say excuse me, trying to get them to notice him to allow him to pass. Nothing. I asked him if he was trying to leave, and he said yes. I had to physically grab the guy to my right and push him out of the way to clear the path for the three of us to get out of there. No one in this place had any manners, any etiquette, or any consideration for anyone. Way over capacity, no room to move, no room to do anything. Very let down. I also noticed that the crowd was very young. For reference my friend and I are in our 30's. The people around us looked like kids. Probably a spot for a younger crowd. read more

Ah, Skinny Dennis. Felt like the movie Urban Cowboy when I stepped into this joint. It's a country dive bar and an awesome one at that. Friendly folk, a great jukebox with awesome old school country music on it, cheap a$$ delicious drinks and just a chill, laid back atmosphere. I didn't want to leave. The peanut shells on the floor give a certain charm to it. The Tito's Lemonade was refreshing and delicious. $8 for a nice, big pint glass always works for me! They actually have a GREAT cocktail menu. I usually never get stumped on what to get but my friend and I found ourselves so undecided, looking over all the fabulous choices! It wasn't so crowded when we came here late in the afternoon on a Friday. Just the right amount of people. I really can't explain the vibe here, it was just so inviting and chill. Was it because Johnny Cash was playing? The dive appeal? The interesting bowling arcade game in the middle of the place? All of these things and more put together? YES! The bathrooms were fine. Typical dive bar type. I really want to give this place five stars but I'm taking one away because my friend and I had to move from our table because there were bugs crawling on the stools. Eek. Came back this past weekend -- which is a testament to Skinny Dennis in and of itself, as I usually don't frequent the same places, in favor of trying something new every time I'm out and about -- and the coffee slushie was just as good as last time. Service was markedly improved (much quicker and more efficient than last time), too, which was great! The scene was very, very crowded, just like last time, but that's okay; it adds to the authentic dive-y feel of the place. The crowd this time was a little older; I'd guess a fair number of regulars who live in the area. Again, a live band was playing (this was another Saturday night): grizzled country/Southern rock veterans. I personally wasn't really into it, since I'm more into indie-pop and top 40's (basic, I know, don't judge), but lots of people were dancing and bopping along to the music. read more

I came on a Saturday afternoon to do a little day drinking before the Mets game and this place was exactly what the group I was with and I were looking for. Cheap beer, good music, space to breath, and a live country band! They have bar peanuts which you can throw the shells on the ground too. The bar is pretty divey and looks a little dirty when you walk in but still a great place to hang out! We need more bars in NYC that have (good) county music! Great live music! Get Willie's frozen coffee! ...but only go with good, strong company you trust. Around 11:30, the place flows with angry bros who blatantly and repeatedly disrespect ladies. The bar-back (who deserves a medal for his hawk-eyes) was the only one to either acknowledge harassment, or express care. The bartenders are polite, efficient, but too busy to connect with patrons. The door guy obviously isn't getting paid enough to screen for, nor deal with, overt drunkenness entering in & out of his establishment. As i left, the heart-of-gold bar-back(?) said that my offender was being kicked out and for me not to leave on behalf of this. The door guy fed this same man, this nuisance turned predator,- (i want to excuse his horrible behavior on the drink. not his character.),- the rest of his bourbon coffee cup. Too little to late. Insult to injury- i forced myself to wait beneath the light outside the bar until that preying guy left. The lights outside made me feel more secure than the doorman. I couldn't be followed if i stayed put. That's how safe it was. Here i am- i'm a blackbelt with a pretty sharp pocketknife on my keychain,- and i felt the need to use either of those things in Williamsburg. At a honky tonk bar. Get It Together, SD. As i said, the doorman fed the rest of the offender his bourbon coffee cup, even held the straw for him. I guess in hopes he'd go away. YUCK. Well, i like Skinny D. Go at your own risk, go with a big posse that can dominate the dance floor, as long as your domination means you will tip well. Maybe with more money, they'll give consideration, rather than resting on their obviously withering laurels.
